My absolute favorite part is when it says the Lord could count on Joseph even when things went wrong, and then posses the question wouldn't it be great if the Lord could count on us too! What a pivotal message! Thank you for creating content to inspire and bless my family.

I am always excited to hear your songs. So thankful to have a song writer like you. Hope I could also write a song. Thank you for always inspiring us. I really love Joseph of Egypt. He remains faithful inspite of the hardships that he faced through and through. I pray that I could be like him so faithful, true and strong.

Reading through the story of Joseph for a little sharing....and I imagined Joseph being dad's favourite and being treated differently, all of his brothers hated him. We could even assume he must be a brat or even dumb because he stayed home while his brothers go out to tend his father's flock. But we learnt that Joseph is a man of God.
"The Lord could can count on Joseph" so profound. 😀 Beautifully written. Thank you!

I love this song, but I hate that kids in the Church are taught that to be counted on they have to be pure or righteous through and through. I am so far from perfect but I show up every single day to teach seminary at 6:00 a.m. I make food for sick people, and I clean up after ward parties. But I do terrible things too. I am not like Joseph through and through, but the Lord can count on me. At least mostly.

I love the song and don’t want to detract from its message but here I go. In reality, only The Lord can truly be counted on. We all make mistakes. Joseph made mistakes. He also made some great choices. So The Lord could count in him just like he counts on us but it’s not because Joseph was perfect. It’s because he repented of his mistakes and The Lord made him a better person. Like he will for all of us.

Ann - You ARE pure through and through if you are doing your best to be faithful and repent when you do wrong! ❤ - Because we believe that sins are forgiven completely through Jesus Christ, that through Him, "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" as Isaiah said. As Brad Wilcox taught in his last General Conference talk, worthiness isn't flawlessness.
God also doesn't expect us to be pure or righteous alone without His Son, but Joseph wasn't alone. The account in Genesis says repeatedly that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him mercy and favor and making him to prosper. I'm sure Joseph wasn't flawless and had his struggles, too -- we're shown his whole story and not how he felt or acted in every moment -- but he responded with an attitude of faith, and so then the Savior could cleanse him and strengthen him and make him more than he was alone.
The words in the chorus were that the Lord could count on Joseph to be "faithful, true, and strong, even when things went wrong" - these are the qualities to be just like Joseph "through and through." He could be counted on not to give up his faith when things went wrong. Sometimes people are quick to give up their faith. But if we're willing to repent and struggle for our faith, I believe that is what matters to God. I think that is being like Joseph.
The part that it seems might have stayed with you was earlier on in the song, where it says that Joseph was thrown in jail "even though he was pure as can be." I took that to mean his moral purity (that he didn't sin with Potiphar's wife), and what I find to be a comforting thing that everything going wrong in your life is not a sign of God's disfavor. Bad things happen to good people. But if Joseph had succumbed and sinned with Potiphar's wife, he still could have repented and become "as pure as can be" through Jesus' Atonement, but the fact that he did not sin in that case is an inspiration to me because it gives me strength that I can resist temptation, too. That's inspiring to me not because I feel constrained to maintain a flawless image but because sin causes me pain and problems, and I'd like to avoid that pain and those problems for my own good if I can.
As far as whether God could "count on" Joseph or can "count on" us - I don't think it's an all-or-nothing thing. I have a job that involves managing people. If one of them consistently does certain tasks well, I know I can give them more responsibility or less supervision. I adapt the tasks I assign and guidance I give to what people are ready for. If they don't do the tasks well, I give more guidance or support before I give them more responsibility. To give someone more responsibility or less supervision, I don't expect flawlessness, but there needs to be a consistent quality of work and that person being dependable and taking ownership of what they are working on. - because if they don't, it falls back on me and causes me problems and is stressful. It is super nice to know I can "count on" someone for a certain task or responsibility - that I can sleep easy knowing they also take care of the task, and I don't have to worry.
I think it must be similar with God, as we are "His hands" on earth. Ultimately, He can bring to pass His work without each of us individually, but I'm sure He appreciates it if He can entrust us with helping in His work. Whether He can "count on us" or not for something does not change one bit His infinite love for each of us. And I think what He "counts on" each of us for is adapted to where we are at in our own progression, just as responsibility might advance in a career as a person gains more experience and wisdom in their work. Maybe one day I'll be a CEO (lol), but I'm not counted on to do that now, while people do count on me to do other things. But to me, it is a happy, motivating thought to think of living in a way that the Lord could have some trust in my being there for Him in a very small way like I can have complete trust in His being there for me.
From what you described, it seems clear that the Lord can count on you! 🙂 He can count on you to wake up super early to teach 6 am seminary, to provide service, to help out. That you may fall short or make mistakes in other areas does not change that you can be "counted on" in these things, and I'm sure He appreciates it! You are probably more like Joseph than you think.
