notice how princess de Lamballe was replaced by Duchess of Polignac (comparing to the first opera) - that means Marie Antoinette favored her

The Duchess lost favor with Marie Antoinette after her second son was born and Marie felt disatisfied with the Polignac's over their ambitions. The duchess and the queen did reunite and became close again before the revolution until The Duchess and her family fled for safety. Lamballe was more constant at Marie's side. She even returned to France at the queen's request.

It was a good choice to deleted. The contrast between the 2 opera scenes is really important in the movie. But It was beautiful as always..

Kirsten Dunst is a goddess. From being the iconic red-haired girlfriend of Spider man to the spoiled youngest March daughter in Little Women to the opulent spendthrift queen of France in the Age Of Absolutism what can't Kirsten do??

Her best performance is that of a child-vampire in Interview... You could see her age before your eyes, even though she always look the same

Meloncholia too! I had to look up if she suffered from depression after watching that movie because her performance was so good.

German opera in german language was a new thing. Before operas were thought to come in two languages: italian and french. Marie Antoinette's brother wanted an opera in his language and hired talents like Mozart to do that. The idea was scoffed by the opera snobs at the time. Opera was thought to be noble and making it in the language of anything else than the "galant ones" was thought to cheapen it.

This scene shows Marie longs for something familiar from her homeland. And she was very close to her brother Joseph.

Opera rather sounds good in German in my humble opinion.

However, this was sung in French - translated from the original Italian libretto.

This is at the Trianon theater at Versailles. The daughter of the Holy Roman Empress likes German opera. Gluck came to Paris in the 1770s from Vienna. The Queen was his patron. He is considered to be responsible for causing a revolution in French opera. He left Paris in disgust in 1779 after the failure of his opera Echo et Narcisse. Ten years later there was another kind of revolution in France. First we see Louis use the rolled paper as a telescope; then we see him using an opera glass. Then we see the Empress reading Mercy's report at the Hofburg in Vienna.

The queen's theatre at Trianon is much smaller than the one shown here.

All those lavish robes, the Opéra scenography...and what she did? She just cut this wonderful scene, although it was unnecessary. Meh.
