Are you a woman, and or if necessary an old love ensemble musical score that he will give me to love who is Jamie Dornan and my soul mate will meet me in Paris?
I am marveled by the HUGE number of extras, the huge number of costumes, and elaborate set decorations. A scene like that, these days, would cost millions. And remember, this is way before CGI.
@Stephen Murphy this is awkward but you didn't get our comments. We are talking about the movie production not about the royal families or their spending 😬😬
I don't think the actress looks too old for the part. She doesn't look 14 but she could probably pass for 19-20, considering she was in her 30's, she looks pretty good.
It’s a wonderful film. I’ve been in love with Norma Shearer since I was a kid. It broke my heart to learn that she lost the Academy Award to Bette Davis.
italoluder I know! They could just hire a fourteen year old girl to play young Marie Antoinette and later have Norma Shearer to play the older Marie Antoinette.
This same actress, Norma Shearer, two years earlier (1936)played Juliet in George Cukor's film of "Romeo and Juliet" - accuracy was not the Hallmark of Old Hollywood, barely is today for that matter. lol.
The popularity of Norma Shearer was so great at that time that she was able to play teenagers like Marie Antoinette and Juliet (as in Romeo and) while she was obviously a grown woman. Film making and AMERICA was a lot different than it is now.Just sayin...
what movie is this?! Love the costumes and the music. Marie Antoinette is my favorite historical figure ppl always get mad at me when I say that but I believe she was a good person she was just thrown in the circumstances of the french court. Their spending and opulence was not all her fault. to me she will forever remain the party queen in a sense. I’ve read a few historical texts about her.
I’ve always been impressed that Herbert Stothart (who wrote the background score to “The Wizard of Oz”) and the MGM music dept. knew enough about Jean-Philippe Rameau’s compositions (he wasn’t well known at this time to the general public) to use a relatively obscure work, such as his 1745 opera-ballet, La Princesse de Navarre (the aria “Regnez, regnez en paix”). 🎶❤️

@@anitamoreno8707 I just received the DVD of this film in the mail last week from Amazon- only $8.00 and some change. It's on Warner Archive Collection- "Marie Antoinette"(1938)Dir. by W.S. Van Dyke starring Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power, Robert Morley, John Barrymore, Gladys George, Anita Louise.

As a movie I prefer Sofia Coppola's version, but in acting of course I prefer Norma Shearer's Maria Antoinette, even though the actress was already in her thirties when she played the character.
It was filmed in black and white. Three-strip Technicolor had only been in use since 1932 and the process was slow to being used by the major studios. The only color film from Marie Antoinette (1938) that exists are some costume tests. Technicolor cameras and crew and processing were still extremely expensive and the cost would have been prohibitive, as most of the budget was sunk into sets and set pieces from Europe as well as costumes.
The Bourbon Royal family of France paid the ultimate price for refusing the French people democracy, as did the Romanov's of Imperial Russia... ...before both of these world changing incidents the king of England Charles Ist was executed by decapitation for the same abuses of his subjects. If the royal families of France & Russia had read their history books both may have survived.
Marie Antoinette, "I shall be Queen of France." Too bad she didn't listen to the sinister foreboding music.
Linda Sturm the score is for the viewing audience, not the characters.
LOUIS XVII it’s a joke...
There is a good recent film .It is much better then this.
Ironically the "I shall be queen of France" line gets replayed at the execution scene.

Yeah, cinema romanticizing history again.

One of the best entrance sequences ever! That gown must have weighed tons and she handled like a feather.
I'm just a bit disappointed how the corset part of the dresses weren't too accurate. The rococo style bust is a bit squished.

Marie Antoinette from 1938
Her story do be interesting
Here's a tender Antoinette...💝
Louis 15 is well represented from this 1938 actor, they are like twins!Louis 16 was not in 1770 so fat,not yet...
He also wasn't as dull-witted and ugly as he's presented in the film.
Marie Antoinette is so sweet 😇
Guys, this was hollywood at it's campiest. This is not a fact-based historical documentary.
King Louis XV here is Drew Barrymore's grandfather... There's even a slight family resemblance.
Then he must be an ancestor of Danielle de Barbarac from Ever After 😂😂😂

Sofia's was more accurate despite what critics said- and was based on Antonia Fraser's masterpiece "Marie Antoinette : The Journey".

Why is it black and white.
The studio filmed it in color, but decided to release it only in b&w since it was much cheaper that way than to make color prints.
