I have this doll in a much larger scale. My brother printed her out for me and I've done a lot of sanding on her. I have also used filler putty and done even more sanding. Then I used a sand able primer on her as well. It's possible to get a super smooth finish but it's taken me a lot more than just 4 hours. I haven't even gotten to the faceup portion of the project. She's so cute though. I'm very pleased with her.
There's a cheat around the sanding. Get some carpenter cabinet card scrapers. Just a small bit of metal with a sharp burr on the edges that's used to shave surfaces smooth. Works VERY well for 3D prints.
@@lilasmith9679 I bought some online, standard and small size, and I love the hell out of them and the finish they produce. If you know someone who works with sheet metal, their scraps can also be use to make your own custom shapes for whatever job you have in mind.
I printed this doll on 50% settings with PLA too. For the problem of joint slipping, i had limited success rubbing a little silicon (silicon used to impermeabilize bathrooms and such) in the joins (before assemple) it gave a little grip on the joins. I also tried "jamm" its knees with a toothpick to keep then stray... so she can (barely) stand.
This model is free on Thingiverse...whoever sold her wasn't meant to do that, I dont think. I have this same bjd. I didn't know you could sand her smooth though! That's amazing! I use her as a reference, as I create my own BJD through 3D modeling. She's super cute!!
For what it’s worth, you could totally use low temp hot glue on PLA. It’s not that sensitive to heat. Obviously, don’t hold the hot tip right against the plastic - that can melt or damage the surface. In fact, you can use wood-burning tools, like the flat chisel tips, to smooth PLA by dragging it over the surface, but it can be a tricky technique that you’d want to practice with before trying to do it on a print.
I know this is 6 months ago but instead of using a drimmel, buy an electric nail tech drill instead. You get more universal fit for bits (drill) options (across brands) and much better control and you get super detailed with it (very small drill/sanders). Just a tip.
I think u can use acetone to smooth out the rest of the lines. Saw it in another video about 3d printed bjd doll ❤️ I wanna make one with a liquid resin printer 🥰❤️
I have pieces of one that I printed on our resin printer and they're really neat, good weight, buuuuut... The resin was fleshtoned and the pieces look and feel like cold fleshy rocks. It's creepy lol.
@@moelee892 what kind of resin do you have use for it? Sry my bad English 😭. But like cold like rocks sounds interesting to me 😅😂. Light blue ice cold princess sounds good ❄️💙 never hold a real bjd in my hands and in next time I don't have money to buy one 😢
@@missginger.e3650 It's a PLA fleshtone resin :) Works alright, but some of the figures my husband printed with them did break in really thin spots, so be careful with it. That said, it seems to hold up fine otherwise!
@@moelee892 ouch 😖 yeah my boyfriend have a mandalorian print and it falls down and the gun broke 😩 my ponita/pokémon galar stands very safe 🤭🥰 I wanna buy resin like the dentist use because this are skin toned 🤔
That print was actually meant to be printed as an sd. I have one a friend printed in msd size and gave her to me. I used thick wires in the legs to stop her from going fetal. Still working on her.
Thanks for the video) It was interesting and informative. I bought a 3d printer and printed out a doll for myself, but I didn't know what to do next, but you suggested. Thanks! With love from Russia!
totally! We're looking into getting a 3d printer in the next few years so I can try my hand at 3d modeling and printing in resin! This lady only has the plastic ones
Old video, but you totally can suede a 3D print PLA doll with hot glue if you're careful. I've managed it with a few now. The doll turned out really nice, btw!
I plan made this doll…she ended up a lot bigger than I thought she’d be but it’s too late now lol Did you use primer when you sanded her? If so would you recommend I and her before or after I dye her? I’m worried the primer might screw up the dyeing process lol
Whomever printed this doll for you needs to dial in their printer better, also fully possible to suede her with hot glue! (I've printed one in 1/3 scale, though she's not done yet.)
Absolutley! This was my first experience with it and once I realized 3d dolls can be smoother and sturdier, and not require 6 hours of sanding I was pretty relieved lol. Let me know how your girl turns out!
Hey would u mind telling me what u did first for sanding I sculpt my own dolls bjd hybrids ect and I just have a super problem with these lines please let me know
hot glue sueding is done by putting hot glue between the joints (without glueing pieces together) to create a "sticker" surface for the joint, and helps the dolls hold poses better
@@TeenyTinkers ahh ok. Haha that was the first spelling I was going to go with. Yea I’ve seen someone else use like a tacky putty for this. Sounds like a good option since it seems like the heat from the hot glue can be an issue sometimes
That was a TERRIBLE print. I have printed this doll on my own 3d printer. I wonder if the shrinking the file made it so choppy. She looks so cute once you were done though.
Your video inspires me to print my own bjd. I'm 2 years late, but breathing in plastic particles is pretty harmful... you might wanna invest in a proper face mask when sanding.
Wow, that’s terrible that you had to pay for a free STL. I just can’t believe that people can be so heartless. PLA is so inexpensive too. Plus she gave you the doll unsanded.

I printed out this whole doll for only 10$ it took me 7 hours of sanding painting re-sanding and it’s almost perfectly smooth
yes! its definitely better resin printed and with good calibration.
I printed this doll in 1/3 scale and I am STRUGGLING to string her. She's adorable, though! Love the way you styled her :-D

I just printed this in 1/3 she's so so big and luckily my Ender 3 printed this quite well and looks good, glad I found your channel for guidance.

hot glue will work in small amounts But super glue is recommended you can find a flex bond or a rubber infused super glue

I've printed a few of these. If you use a fine print setting you dont need to use as coarse of a grit to start. Cant vapour smooth if you use pla.

What are your print settings cause I’ve been trying to print this for 3 days

Hi I’m trying to make a bjd doll by printing is there any files or websites you use for male dolls that are free to download
Thingiverse might have some?
the link is no longer active, it tells me 404, can anything be done?please! please!!!!!!
the artist removed it because people would take the files and sell them on Etsy and pass them off as their own.
So cool!

like a corn based plastic?
PLA (Polylactic-Acid) .
i think they stole the pattern 😔

no shes a biodegradeable corn fiber lol
