- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

First 99Rockhounding, then Agate Dad and now Michigan Rocks. Now my Friday is complete.
I haven't had a chance to watch either of their videos yet. Thomas told me that Taylor's video was really good today.
Lol cool
@@MichiganRocks Taylor may have created rock porn. God help us.
@@carmenevans7651 I watched it. There were some awesome agates there.
Wow, just beautiful! Never get bored of the sound of those waves.
I was wondering if the calcite went al the way through, how cool! Nancy found some beautiful stones! Nice to see her in your videos! 😊
I’ve never been to Pilgrim Haven although my sister goes there quite frequently. It’s only about 100 miles from my Indiana home. It looks like there’s plenty of rocks there. I guess I’ll have to check it out sometime. That’s cool that you decided to slice the lightning stone. I didn’t think that the white veins would penetrate that deeply into the rock. My wife is an avid beach glass hunter. Not only do you find glass but pieces of porcelain, China and pieces of old crocks. Thanks for taking us along !!!
I don't have much of an interest in beach glass, and it's weird how I rarely notice it. I guess I'm just not focused on it. My sister loves it and finds a lot whenever I'm out with her and I find none. I guess it's all about what you're looking for.
I go to Pilgrim Haven frequently and have found a ton of glass there. It's a great spot for finding all kinds of treasures. Highly recommended.
@@stacyr.8585 Yep, when the weather gets nicer I want to go check it out !
Wow! I never would have guessed how cool those lightening rocks are on the inside. I expected the pattern to be on the surface only. As always, it's lots of fun to join you & Nancy on your rock hunting trips!
Nope, it's more than skin deep. I thought it looked pretty good slabbed too.
I love lightning stones and ocean glass. Very pleasing video. ♥️
Pilgrim Haven is a very special beach to me! Found my first (and 2nd) Petoskey stones there this year. I travel to the area frequently and I will say the best time to find the MI lightning septarian's is in late winter/early spring. Thanks for the slabbing demo BTW! Very fun!!
That's the best time to find rocks in general. Between the ice and wind when no one is hunting, the rocks get mixed up pretty well.
Very cool rocks for sure. Very cool seeing one sliced too. Nice geode Nancy. Seems like that spot has a lot to offer👍👍
It was a great little beach. I really enjoyed it.
Really like your rock hunting adventures. Thanks for taking us and educating us along the way.
You're welcome!
I saw a video of septarian nodules that were cut and polished and made into jewelry and coaster sets and they were stunning. They had some outside that were Boulder sized.
There used to be a guy on the Rock Tumbling Hobby forums who made spheres out of them. He lived in the area. His spheres were really awesome.
The lightning stones were really unique. The one you slabbed was very pretty! 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The lightening stones are so cool. You found a few really great ones! The slabs were very interesting also. Thanks for sharing Rob!✌😎
They are cool and I love the slab too.
Ah…you are my people. Especially your “special guest” Lori - I too collect beach glass, get very excited when I find bits of pottery or china, marbles, etc…but I also collect rocks & fossils. I’m not sure where Pilgrim Cove is, but it reminds me of another beach we recently discovered that is just chock full of lightening stones.
I’m just so thrilled to have found your channel. The beaches in SW Michigan are certainly not as rocky as Up North beaches but we do have some treasures if you know where to look. And go in off season - though there’s one city owned beach that is always good for glass & fossils (which always seem to be together, oddly). Anyway, just very happy to have found your wonderful channel!
I'm glad you found it too! The more the merrier. My sister loves beach glass too. I'm more of a rock guy. It's nice that there are different things for different tastes so everyone is happy.
I put a link to a Google Maps link to the beach in the description.
Thank you so much! It is interesting watching you comb through beaches and tossing back rocks that don’t quite meet the mark. When I first started collecting the man-made (glass/pottery) I would take all that I came across. A few years ago I gathered all the pieces that need more time and slid them into Lake Michigan off a boat.
It’s interesting to watch what you and others choose and what is rejected. I think we all have our preferences and standards. I know I need to get busy this winter with my tumbler - I am so grateful you’ve made a “how-to” video for beginners. My husband bought me a very nice tumbler a few years ago and I’ve yet to use it because I felt rather inept. Now I have your videos. Thank you.
@@tiffinyharrington9307 I'm sure you can get some great rocks out of your tumbler. It's really not hard, it just takes patience. Most people that I see having problems either lack patience or are doing something different than what I do. It's funny that people will tell me that they did everything just like I did, but don't have their rocks turn out. Then, when I start asking questions, it's clear that they cut corners or used different grits and polishes, or did something else completely different. The best way to learn is to just get started. You can always move your rocks back a step or two and try again. It would take a lot to really destroy them.
Awesome finds !! And the water is so clear..holy cow..love learning from your videos..thank you for sharing 👍
Good hunt. I am enjoying these videos of you and the missus. She is a good rock hunter.
She is good. She keeps showing me up.
I have always been curious what Lake Michigan septarians look like cut. You did us a favor by making this video and showing what's inside. Beautiful!
One of these days I hope to get around to tumbling the other ones.
What I like about your best slices is that they remind me of a giraffe 🦒, they would be pretty as a pendant or earrings if smaller, really pretty !
They do look like a giraffe's fur pattern, don't they?
We live in Indiana and found this park and beach for the first time this year and loved it. We usually go up to West Side County Park and Pier Cove Park just north of South Haven, MI for lightening stones and the fossil/crinoid filled rocks you found and very very occasionally a small Petoskey stone and then back to South Haven for the awesome sunsets from the lighthouse pier
Yes - Pier Cove is what this beach reminds me of! The only bad part about Pier Cove is it’s so known. But it won’t stop me from returning. Just not great for glass, but fossils & lightening stones absolutely.
Pier Cove was on my list of places to try. I started at Deer Lick Park, but that was no good. Tiny beach and it wasn't really possible to walk far without trespassing if I left the water. Nancy didn't have any waders, so that wasn't going to work. We never ended up getting to Pier Cove because we only had two or three hours.
@@MichiganRocks yeah we did Deer Lick Park for about 5 minutes. It was so small!
@@tiffinyharrington9307 Try West Side County Park just south of Pier Cove Park. There is way more parking, picnic shelters, playground and bathrooms and you can walk along the beach to Pier Cove Park
@@sandraabshire4923 Usually, the small park wouldn't slow me down, I'd just keep on walking.
Nancy always wins😉. lol! That’s some cool finds Rob. i love rocks that have veins like that running throughout.
Yep, these veins are different than any other veins I have seen in rocks.
Aboslutely fantastic! I have a small version of a Lighting Rock that polished up great. Thank you for naming it for me. I had to get up from the video and go find it in my stash of "landscape polished" rocks. Cheers!
Did you tumble it or do it some other way?
@@MichiganRocks I did tumble it... Lortone 33B tumbler. I would send a photo if that was possible.
@@jneihart2 Use my instagram account if you can. It's in the description.
Really cool rocks! I love your beautiful state!
Me too!
Never seen a lightning rock! Thanks for slabbing one. Stunning. Always fun to see what you find! Thanks!!!!
I had never seen one in person before this. Cool rocks.
Enjoyed your video very much and all your comments and replies!! Thank You!! 🤗
You read all the comments and replies? I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do that.
@@MichiganRocks I read them as well, and on the other channels I watch.
I don't always reply but I read comments and I giggle at many.
I live in South Haven and never heard of this park until now!!! Thank you!!!
I know where I'm headed tomorrow!!!
That’s funny. I didn’t think I’d be showing the locals anything new.
@@MichiganRocks I've lived here 2 years...still learning!!! Thank you!!! 😃
Fantastic video and amazing what you showed us!!
Congratulations my friend!!
Thanks!
Those cool looking! Can they be tumbled? Nancy is the Queen! Thanks for sharing!
I hear that they can be tumbled, but I haven't tried it yet. They're soft, so it's going to be a more difficult rock to tumble than harder rocks.
Nice video, thanks for sharing🙂
Oh my stars and garters!!! First, I love Lightening Stones!! (As well as quartz) Second, I’m glad you cut open a lightening, I’ve always wanted to but not brave enough. Third, with much patience tumbling, they are fun to see the end result! They are very “messy” to tumble, the water gets nasty, and I only tumble them by themselves, nothing else. Your finds are spectacular!!
Thanks for the tumbling tips. I know they're soft and should probably tumble somewhat like a Petoskey Stone. I also tumble Petoskeys by themselves.
Different I'll give you that. Nice contrast in the slabs. Too bad there weren't more colors. Still cool. Thanks Rob & Nancy.
True, they're not colorful, but they do have nice contrast. Wouldn't it be cool if each brown area was a different color like a stained glass window?
@@MichiganRocks God doesn't make mistakes. Though I know what you mean, that would be super.
Nice video Rob, Nancy obviously has the eye of a scientist.
She was a science teacher, so that makes sense.
Very cool lightning rocks. Slabs are amazing! Another new thing to me. TFS ❤️🦅🦅
I've seen pictures for years, and always wanted to go looking for them. Mission accomplished!
a cracked mud ball 😂 - super cool video - i like the turquoise one nancy found at 8:42
Very nice, Rob! The reason they are heavy for their size is that they are quite rich in iron in the form of siderite (iron carbonate).
That's what I figured. We went to Deer Lick park, but I think that the houses have recently added a bunch of limestone boulders to protect their property from the high water. We couldn't walk down the beach at all without going into the water. Nancy didn't have waders, so that wasn't going to work. A lady there suggested this beach, and we were very happy with it.
Thats one of my favorite spots ! I wish i wouldve been there when you were there . Would be nice to meet the man the myth the legend .
It's probably better than you just see me on my videos. If you met me in real life, you'd realize that I'm just another guy who likes rocks.
I can see why this would be a favorite spot, it's a really nice spot with a nice variety of rocks.
Thanks for making this. I liked the hunt and exploratory cut! This was really helpful and educational
Thanks Amanda, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks so much for taking us on your walk. Greetings from the Mediterranean
I'd love to walk your beaches someday.
@@MichiganRocks I hope you do, its beautiful here. There are now direct flights out if NY. But I'm noticing that your beaches are much more colorful. So many beautiful rocks!
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: fun rockhounding and GREAT scenery!
I’m sorry you can’t get out, but I do a lot of these so hopefully you can live vicariously through Nancy and me.
Lightning stones and what I call fossil soup. Their like death plates. So nice. I live fairly close to Pilgrim Haven...nice day trip. Especially after a storm to stir up new awesome finds!
That's the only rock hunt I have done in the SW part of the state. I prefer to go north. I love the U.P. I need to get down your way more often. I enjoyed that day.
Loved this trip!
I'm so glad you did this video. It let me see that we could get my wheelchair pretty close to the beach. We spent Mother's Day there and my family found a couple of lightning stones. Not bad for rookie rockhounds. Thanks Rob!
I'm glad you were able to get to the beach. I hate to suggest to people that any beach is wheelchair accessible because I don't know how much off roading the typical wheelchair can do. Once you get to a beach, you're probably going to be facing sand and/or rocks, neither of which seem like the ideal surface for a wheelchair.
@@MichiganRocks You're right, my wheelchair really needs cement or very hard packed gravel. My family pushed me down to the end of the cement walkway and from there I could see the whole beach. It wasn't ideal, but was close enough. There is a website (I think it was Pure Michigan) that lists accessible beaches in Michigan. Apparently, there are even beaches that the state provides special wheelchairs with balloon tires that can go in the sand and water. It had never occurred to me that something like that would exist. I found the website while looking for info on Pilgram Haven.
@@notinmanitou That's really cool that they have a site like that and that there are beach wheelchairs that even exist.
We've been there! You should check out Pier Cove Beach not far from there
That was on my list, but someone suggested Pilgrim Haven. We tried Deer Lick Creek Park, but that was not good. Nancy didn't have waders and the houses on either side of the park had big rocks protecting their property from erosion with the high water. You would have had to wade in the water to avoid trespassing. A lady there suggested we go to Pilgrim Haven.
I Love THAT PLACE.....NANCY was MAGNETICALLY connected there........SHORT GREAT video getting HOME SLABBING........WILD DESIGNS ... ..
COOL REALLY NICE
Thank you!
Yep, Nancy was on fire that day.
Neat stones - will they polish up, then extra NEAT! Looks like a nice new Park by South Haven. Thanks for taking us with...
I don’t know if it is new or not, but it was vey nice.
Lovely rock hunting! Great video! :)
What a wonderful episode is this ! Those thunder rocks are fascinating ! I love those slabs they would make lovely coasters if polish 😍🤩👍
They would make nice coasters, but my rocks were a bit small for that. Maybe for a shot glass!
Nancy was your good luck charm. There were sure a lot of them. I wonder how they would polish up. They look like they might undercut. The slabs came out great. Laurie’s lightning stone was neat, even unpolished.
Yeah, I really like the one she found. I think these are hard to tumble, but I haven't tried yet. I understand they're really soft.
@ Christie, they are pretty tough to tumble. The water is messy, only tumble with themselves because the white part gets like glass and will scratch other rocks. I haven’t noticed too much, if any, undercutting. But with much patience, the results are awesome!! I’d say, go for it! Tumble a load. I do the rotary first, but like a good 2-3 times on step 1, a few times step 2, then finish in a vibe. If I could figure out how to post pictures of mine, I’d love to show you!!
@@jacqulynjohnson6237 If you could post pictures somewhere else, you could leave a link here.
@@MichiganRocks I’ll tag you on Instagram.
Thanks. I bet that they are beautiful. I don’t have instagram. I deleted all of my social media.

That's great, I'm glad you found some.
Wow...never heard of a lightening stone! Oh yes...Nancy got "Best of Show"...wow!~! Whatcha gonna do with the lightening stones? I can't wait to see!
OMG...how awesome!
I'll probably eventually tumble them.
@@MichiganRocks One of the gals I know, who picks and picks, asked her and here's her reply: "Yes, they’re mostly in the Petoskey area. We find similar stones up north, but they’re mostly on one hard to get to beach and they have light purple agates inside of them. David cuts them, they’re beautiful! I’ll have to get one to you! 😊" Pretty cool!
@@LadyYoop I have never found one in northern Lake Michigan. From everything I've read, they're only found in the southern part of the lake in a fairly small area right around where we were. Of course, I haven't been to the hard to get to beaches up north.

My go to beach for rock hounding.
I can see why! I really enjoyed it.
Awesome, hope you one's have an amazing weekend. 💚✌️
Those are cool. That's interesting that they're so heavy considering how soft they are. Great video!
Hardness and density aren't really related. Lead and gold are soft, but very dense.
Come to southeast Indiana and I'll take you to find all the geodes you want.
@@MichiganRocks come to southeast Indiana and let me take you geode hunting
Maybe some day. That's a long way away.
Awesome adventure wow beautiful stones fantastic thank u
* WOW . Never heard of Lightening stones.. Cool.. I want to find beach glass in tiny colorful pieces to make Kaleidoscopes as gifts for Niece & Nephew.. Cool..
I think this would be the beach to go to for glass, according to what Lori showed me.
Those are very nice lightening stones , my favourite was the circular patterned one. One problem though they remind me of a slightly squashed Tunnocks teacake , so at a more reasonable hour I want to go to the shop to buy some : /
I have never heard of Tunnocks Teacakes, so I had to do a little Google search. Those look just like Nabisco Mallomars. When I was a kid, I had those a few times, but they always looked better than they tasted. I do see how a squished one would look like a lightning stone.
@@MichiganRocks OK I googled mallomars, they do look similar.
Those are really interesting! Very cool! I think I can remember the name of those!😆
Yep, that's an easy one.
How interesting are those lightning stones, some remind me of Native American writing! Beautiful ❣️. I should of said drawing 😊
I don't know if I have ever seen Native American writing.
Some really nice slabs. They will be great pendants.
Those are great! I have several from Fennville! Septarian !
Yeah, they're fun!
I have been going to pilgrim haven for just over 2 years. I have found pockets worth of agates, geodes, pudding stones, and every now and then pyrite within a rock. I love coming here right after a storm there. When the beach eroded tons of new rocks came in and I found some of my best keepers then.
The best picking is always after a storm or early in the spring. It's cool that there's such a variety on that beach.
I’ve always wanted to see what they looked like cut open. Thank you for showing!! You guys are great!
I was curious too, now we can both sleep better knowing what's inside.
That water looked cold! I’m about an hour from Pilgrim Haven Beach and never made it over there this summer. Now I really want to go after seeing all the cool lightning stones.
It wasn't cold with waders. It wasn't actually as cold on my hands as I thought it might be.
Cool rocks, I’ve never heard of these before! I really like the slab cuts!!
I've heard of them for years, but never took the time to drive that far to look for them. Now I can check that one off my list.
The lighting stones are awesome! You need to come to Geode Fest and hunt geodes. It would be worth the long drive.
Where's Geode Fest?
That's was so cool,To see the slabs. Unexpected
I've been trying to do more of that stuff lately.
ROB, I was out on the beach in South West Michigan today and found some lightning stones and an Agate, They do exist on Lake Michigan if you look hard enough, it was about the size of a dime.😄
I used to think that agates couldn't be found in Lake Michigan, but I hear about them being found much more than I ever thought possible. Congratulations on a great find.
Phenomenal!!! Thanks Rob
Oh wow! Really nice slabs.
The location seemed to be a fun place to look.
It was a really nice spot. We had a lot of fun there.
Hi Bob, I picked up a few of these lightning stones in the spring at Saugatuck. Thanks for sharing, I had no idea what it was.
You're welcome!
I´m jealous. It´s dark and rainy in Germany and the next beach is 400 miles away.
But it´s nice to have the beach at least on yt.
It's kind of dark and rainy here this time of year too. I'm over 500 miles from the ocean as the crow flies, but fortunately, I'm really close to Lake Huron. I'll be able to supply you with videos for a while longer before the snow flies (I hope!).
@@MichiganRocks The videos are very appreciated!

Puddingstones really do look a lot like concrete.
Wow you two...That was a great hunt. I'd never heard of lightning stones before. I just about dropped my pizza when I saw the results from cutting the slabs. I REALLY LIKE IT. Thanks for another great video. Did you find the lady who collected the beach glass? Just curious.
Yes, we found her. She was very appreciative that we passed on our find.
Awesome video Sir! love seeing those lightning stones. Are you planning a tumbling video with them????? Cheers
Some day, but not soon. I have a whole bunch of other stuff lined up before that.
thats the first time i saw any one of those lightning stones, they are beautiful treasures from the lake

Very cool! I'm visiting michigan and planning on checking it out tomorrow.
Good luck. It's been warm here, so you might get lucky and be able to find some rocks.
Pilgrim Haven is one of my favorite places to rockhound on Lake Michigan!
We sure liked it.
There is another park right near there called Rocky Gap. I have not had a chance to get there, but other rockhounders I have talked to say it's a good spot too.
@@songbirdscreations-MargaretS Thanks, I hadn't heard of that one. This is a long way from my house, so I don't expect to be in the area often, but if I am there, it's nice to know where to go.
I found many lightning stones last year! I actually tumbles some a week ago. South Haven has a lot! Great video. 👍🏼
How did the tumbling go? I hear they're hard to tumble well.
@@MichiganRocks they are really hard, so that’s a plus but they don’t take a shine. More of a low luster, but they looked really good! My daughter really likes them, and she took a couple, along with a few others that I recently tumbled. I wasn’t dissatisfied with them. I knew before hand that they probably wouldn’t take a shine. But they did smooth out even better( they are relatively smooth to begin with) and are presentable for sure. I’ve got a batch if Petoskey stones in right now…. Aluminum oxide polish with corn cob. I have the ultra vibe 18. So I hope the ratio is a right. Lol. Corn cob to polish I checked them today and they are polishing up nice… but aren’t super shiny. Not sure what’s what with that. Any ideas? I’m open to suggestions and critiquing. Thanks!
@@ModernDayPilgrim They get somewhat shiny with that method, but not as shiny as they get by hand polishing or doing them on a cab machine.
@@MichiganRocks Rob, I just finished a batch of Petoskey stones. Some turned out perfect and others not so perfect. I will run them through again.
In your opinion, if I have an ultra vibe 18 which is the big one and I have to fill it halfway up with corn cob, how much polish would you say I should put in that size vibratory Tumblr? If I were to do harder rocks, and use ceramic media with the rocks it would be 4 ounces of the last two stages of grit. But with Petoskey stones, and the fact that I’m using corn cob, I’m not sure if that ratio would still stay the same? Do you have any thoughts on that? I did call the Rock Shed twice, they were very helpful with me purchasing my machines, but since then I have not been able to get a hold of them by phone. There’s no answer, and it goes to voicemail, which is full. Anyhow any help you can give me I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much!
@@ModernDayPilgrim I use a tablespoon in my Lot-O which is a 4.5 lb. barrel. You should be able to adjust from that. The ones that didn't turn out were probably lesser quality rocks. I don't think they'll do better if you run them again, but it's worth trying.
I thought they looked pretty cool on the beach, but then you slabbed one. WOW!
I was pretty happy with that too. Fun stuff inside!
Loved the last couple especially

Pilgrims is one of our favorite places. To the point I'm not allowed to get anymore lightning stones cus that place is packed with em every time we stop.
I only brought a few home. I just need a sample to play with. They were pretty easy to find there for sure.
I never knew there were mermaids in the great lakes, I thought they only appeared after being at sea for months.
You learn something new every day, huh?
There's lots of lightning stones to be found on the Yorkshire coast in the UK. I've seen them from golf ball size to beach ball size.
That beach sounds like a fun place to go.
