    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    Super interesting video. I gotta plan the trip up there. I'm from Indiana and I tend to spend most my "Up North time" in the UP.
    I think I would be a little freaked out hiking around sinkhole areas, even though those are "old ones." I already get enough flack from my daughter about my solo MI trips to hound remote beaches. I have quit telling her when I am heading out to hike in new woods - lol.
    Kyle, I said a prayer for the best possible outcome for your mom, and I added her to my prayer list for complete healing. I put her down as "Kyle's mom from MI." ☺️ No need to know her name; God remembers all intentions!

      Kyle's mom has been on my prayer list for months, since I first heard that she was sick. Thanks for adding her to yours too.
      I really like the U.P. I'm more into agates and other "pretty rocks" than fossils. If you like fossils, Alpena is a great place to visit. Add Partridge Point to your list of spots to check out if you come here. Sytek park isn't bad either.

    Came across this video after one of my visits to Rockport- and I say this because you're allowed to take these fossils and there's more than plenty to go around- the petoskeys can be sanded and polished to look like any other petoskey. You have to make sure the fossil goes all the way through the rock, and it is a TON of work, but I have done it and they're awesome when they're done.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  5 дней назад

      You're getting your big Petoskeys from a different quarry on the west side of the state. I'll bet that makes a difference. I polished a big one from the LaFarge quarry which isn't too far away from here and it turned out pretty bad too. I'm sure there are some good ones mixed in, but after spending too much time for disappointing results, I have given up on quarry rocks from Rockport.

      We managed to not die. It would be easy to get hurt there though. There was a high school kid in Alpena who fell into a sinkhole and got seriously injured. There was a group at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (Phelps Collins) training to do just this sort of rescue. While they were lifting the boy out of the sinkhole, they disturbed a bee hive and he also got stung. I think the probably learned his lesson that day.

    Will be saying a prayer for Kyle’s Mom. Hope his visit provides her with the comfort she needs right now and that her treatment(s) will be helpful. That looks like a huge...... quarry. The sinkholes are so interesting. I do love rocks, a lot - but I love flowers even more. :) I think the flower you asked about is Lobelia Kalmii. It actually grows all the way up into Ontario. It was hard to see the stems but this plant has a long, slender stem, flower on the end, with linear leaves. The rocks provide protection and warmth and I can see it blooming into September in that location. It does like rocky areas and that is definitely rocky. Hope all is well with you and your family Rob. Thanks for sharing. You and Kyle make a great team.

      I love flowers too. One of my other hobbies is landscaping and gardening. I think you're right about the lobelia. I just looked up some pictures and the plant itself looks right. I found some taller ones down in the quarry after seeing the ones that were in this video.
      Have you seen Jack Barnwell's videos? He does a lot of landscaping on Mackinac Island. I just love his work. ruclips.net/user/JackBarnwellDesignvideos

    • @ladikmk
      @ladikmk Год назад

      @@MichiganRocks Oh yes! Jack Barnwell is such an incredible landscaper architect/designer. I found his videos during Covid and wouldn’t miss one of them for anything. I lived in FL for quite a few years so tropicals are dear to my gardening heart, but I’m also a Northern girl and love all plants, shrubs, trees, especially wildflowers and anything that attracts/feeds pollinators. The gardens he designs and creates on Mackinac, upper MI and down around Naples, FL are just breathtaking. Watching Jack work is seeing an art form in motion; he’s in a league all of his own - and his brother, Emery, is a wizard with wood in any form.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Год назад +1

      @@ladikmk I think we agree! I don't watch his Florida stuff because that doesn't really apply to my yard, but the Michigan videos sure do.
      I have started planting a lot of sweet woodruff because of Jack's love of it. One plant that he doesn't use is Canadian wild ginger which is another great ground cover for shade.

    • @ladikmk
      @ladikmk Год назад

      @@MichiganRocks Pretty sure Jack’s landscaping materials are focused on Proven Winners since he is a spokesman for them, and what is available for shipping to upper MI. It’s good to stick with plants that are indigenous to your area because that provides the most success in gardening. Plants for other Zones don’t typically do well, no matter how hard you try.
      When it gets REALLY, REALLY cold, snowy, icy and you’re not grinding/cutting stones, you should take a look at his FL videos. They give me hope for Spring. :) Thanks for your comments Rob.

    Hey Rob thanks for another interesting video. It's definitely neat that so many plants have colonized that degraded landscape, and I think that the flowers you mentioned at 4:10 are a species of fringed gentian. I can't tell exactly but my guess is that they're something in the genus Gentianopsis. Very cool!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Год назад

      You're the third person to attempt to identify that flower. I know it's hard to do from my video with it blowing around and not very clear. You're the second to identify it as fringed gentian. The other one was Lobelia Kalmii, which is interesting because according to wikipedia, it grows in cracks in limestone rocks. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobelia_kalmii

      @@MichiganRocks , it's a great life no matter where we are in Michigan and trolls are certainly awesome people (not meant negatively!!). Rockport near Alpena always reminds me of the landscape near Iron Mountain and Menominee where I spent my youth. Lots and lots of sinkholes and gravel pits. I still have a small bin of the rocks I collected there on our farm along with small slabs of iron ore and some amethyst from up near copper harbor when we'd travel. Nothing jewel grade of course, just memories associated with each stone.

My son really enjoys biking there. There's a trail that goes along the top of the back of the quarry.
