- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Just walking up to the ledge and looking out at all that gravel on the beach was enough to get the pulse racing! The agates and other rocks you guys found were great! Looks like it was a perfect day! (Well maybe except for the flies).
It was a really nice day. I love when it's calm so you can see into the water much better.
Gosh, I hope you kept that double Omar because that was a beauty!
Your black rock at 6:20 looks like a micaceous sandstone.
Micaceous, as in mica? I didn't know that sandstone could contain mica. You're always teaching me something.
Sam kept a few small Omars, but I don't think he took that one home.
Check your email. I sent you a picture last week.
@@MichiganRocks An arkose sandstone (especially an immature one) can have lots of mica in it.
I’ve been watching your videos for a year now preparing for my trip to Lake Superior, and now I’m just a week away! Thank you so much for training me for on what to look for. I love these rock hunting videos the most!
I’m currently isolated cause I got Covid …. SO you … I envy
Have A Blast 💥
You're welcome, Maggie. I left a few for you. Good luck!
You will enjoy it. Almost the best of the Great Lakes, my heart is owed to Michigan (Go Blue!!!). But I love Superior! Two hearted and Crisp point are very fun drive.
@@Luciddreamer007 get better soon!
@@MichiganRocks I might have to pick up some of the ones you threw back!
Watched another time, really liked the water sounds & close ups. Entire WALK view 😍

💋😘 thank U
Looks like fun. Is there a lot of Basalt there? Beach stones look like granite and basalt. 5 days dang I wanna come. Biting flies don't really like mint, so get come mint leaves to take with you rub them on your skin.
I haven't tried mint, but I did just try Vick's VapoRub which someone suggested last summer. I think it was just like adding a yummy sauce for the bugs.
I used to think the black rocks were basalt, but a geologist said something that makes me wonder. The omars look exactly like the same rock as the other black rocks on the beach and omars are made of greywacke.
Because of your videos we are going to your neck of the woods at partridge point for 2 nights on the way home from lake superior!
Partridge point is not a two day location. Nearby Rockport is though. Plan to spend some time there.
@@MichiganRocks great!, we are staying at the Ramada hotel...any good places to eat? My wife, and 3 daughters are so excited. It would be great to run into you both at the beach!!
@@hiking7521 Someone just told me that they were really unhappy with the Ramada Inn. I was kind of surprised because that always used to be a nice place. I'm not sure what their standards are though. There's a Holiday Inn Express in town that's only a few years old.
Here are a few places that we like to eat:
The Fresh Palate or Nuclear Lounge (same restaurant, different rooms) has a great selection of beer and really good food. I love pizza, so I always get one of their specialty pizzas.
Austin Brothers Brewery: Great beer and really good food.
Mangos: Good Mexican place. Mangos Express is more like Qdoba.
The Courtyard: Good Italian restaurant
Red Brick Tap and Barrel: We haven't been here yet because it's pretty new. I think it's a little more expensive than some of the other places I listed, but not outrageous or anything. People seem to like it. They also like the food trucks parked next door.
Hunan's is a Chinese place. We like it, but it's nothing too special.
You didn't really just put that cool cresent moon omar back ... did you?.... :)
I did. I brought a bunch of omars home a few years ago and then they just sat in a box. I just don't have a use for them. I really don't believe in bringing rocks home just to have them there. Other than a few exceptions, I only bring home rocks I plan to tumble or make something from.
That is a lovely beach with lots of very beautiful rocks ! Sorry about the flys spoiling your fun though , enjoy your trip 💗
They didn't spoil our fun, but it would have been a little more fun without them.
Ahhh the FLIES!! Some great finds though 😃
When I was a kid in Alaska my father took me fishing and there must have been a billion mosquitoes. Looked like they were 2 inches long
I’m glad you survived!
Lots of nice rocks. Love the banded iron. My mom in Iowa says the flies have been terrible there too. I like when Sam goes with you. Nice Lake Superior agates. Happy 4th of July weekend to you Rob and your family!🇺🇸
I like having Sam along too. He finds a lot of agates.
Me: I'm going to use this trip to find agates.
Also me: So I left the beach with all these cool fossils.
11:14 Holy crap that rock is beautiful
Banded iron can be really nice. That was a good one.
It’s really hard to tell from a video, but I think some of the “magates” are actually jaspagate. They can actually tumble quite nicely and have amazing patterns that only show up when polished. You guys found some really nice specimens. Thanks for enduring the flies to make a video for us! Have a wonderful 4th of July!🇺🇸
They could be. One of these days, I'm going to pull out all of my magates and tumble them.
I would love to see that.
The spiders and frogs eat all night long and still don't make a dent in their population. I've come to hate them pest.
I don't know how anything could make a dent in the fly population up there.
Love the Omars! Missing the UP and Michigan! Thanks for sharing your fun!
Excellent 18mins & 32 seconds…. It flew by !
That big knee high agate was very cool 😎 However my favorite was that odd black rock with all the red inclusions
I gotta tell ya Rob - I reside in The Natural State ; Arkansas now , but I was born in Whitefish Bay Wisconsin , ( model ‘61 ) In 1965 my kindergarten class ( Henry Clay Elementary ) took a field trip to Big Bay Beach to collect rocks to paint for our Dads on Father’s Day . So your video’s bring up REAL memories for me - kind of like muscle memory for the brain
Dad passed away in December 2018 just weeks from age 90 ( I was his full-time caretaker too ) in our grief my brothers and I blindly boxed up all the stuff in his home office After one of your videos I went to that box and down at the bottom I found my rock ! I guess as a four-year-old I was into native American stuff because I painted a piece pipe on it !!
I’m looking at the rock now !
Well done - very beautiful film work
P. S. That Sam is a Great kid - oops , I mean young man
That's a great story. Your dad must have really loved that rock to keep it for all those years. I'm sorry you lost him.
You should team up with Flour Gold Wizard... you find the cool rocks whilst he finds the specks of gold on the same beach
Just meet up in da yoopee, eh?
I just discovered him a couple weeks ago and asked a few questions about gold panning. I'd love to meet up with him.
I absolutely love your videos. I am from Dayton, OH and every summer we spend a week at Kelley's Island in Lake Erie. I have found all kinds of rocks including Petoskey stones, but not great quality. I would love to travel to some of the beaches in MI that you have identified. What do you do with all the rocks you find and polish?? Do you have a rock shop where you sell things you have found??
I don't sell polished rocks anywhere, but I do sell a few things at a local shop. I sell stone crosses, little turtles, guitar picks, beads that fit Pandora bracelets, heart shaped pendants, other pendants, and Christmas ornaments at that time of year. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
Here's a video showing what I do with my polished rocks. Set your expectations low before watching it.

Hate black flies! And they love the taste of insect repellent!! It's like spice on their meal and their meal is YOU.
I agree completely. I refuse to add sauce to myself for their enjoyment.
Those flies looked horrible! Thanks for sharing your wonderful finds, despite those nasty flies!
The flies up there can be pretty bad. The rocks are worth it though.
Sam is a cool, young man! I love seeing these types of videos. I hope you both enjoy your camping time and find lots of agates and other cool things!
We had a fun four days up there. You'll be seeing videos from that trip for the next several weeks. We did really well on agates this year.
Lace agate chip with band there .
Cool your ladder is still there. The flies looked horrible that you really need netting and really smart you brought it. Place is so pretty. The magnetic test on the sand and rocks was pretty cool. Looks like you found a bunch of nice rocks again. The fishing pole was some nice trash to find. Was fun to watch. Great video
Not really "our ladder" even though that's what I said. We just use it every year. Lots of fun things to find on that beach, even the trash is nice.
Great video. Really good beach for rockhounding.
So many beautiful rocks out there! But man you guys are brave to deal with all those biting flies. Im not so sure i could deal with them! Wow that big rock after the big white quartz piece, was really beautiful! it had a lot going on in it for sure. Just looking down from you camera, shows just how colorful every rock is. Sams rocks were really cool. You both did awesome! great work. Bad flies!
The flies are no fun, but the bug suit helps. They're mostly out on hot, humid days. The next day was cold and windy, so there were no bugs.
You only wore fly pants. Did they not bother you above the legs?
Nice agate finds!
I know you like pudding stones and petoskey stones, but is a nice change to see you collecting something else. BTW, I am new to rockhounding and I do not understand why agates are so desirable. What is it about agates?
I like variety too, but certain beaches are known for certain rocks. In Lake Michigan and Huron, there are Petoskey Stones and puddingstones. In Lake Superior, the most common thing to look for are agates.
Lake Superior agates are really incredible if you find good ones. They have really tight bands. The colors are widely varied and can be really bright. They also tend to be translucent. If you saw some good ones, you might be more impressed.
Here are a couple videos of some big ones:

I was just in Grand Marais a couple of weeks ago. The waves were too high to get in the water, but the black flies weren’t out yet. You both have some great finds.
It was cold and windy the next day which took care of the flies.
Gracias por todo mí celular no anda muy bien lo ciento hasta luego
Es verdad !!
De nada.
Great video and beautiful pieces! Thanks a million!
Moss agate ❣️👏🎁
I think I liked your possible hematite sparkly rock better as the find of the day.
Everyone has their favorites. I was out looking for agates, so those were my favorites.
❤️
Very beautiful rocks and agates!👍😊
OMG 😲😱 HATE flies & 🦟 flies & ants sting feels like 🔥sometimes swollen 😫😢 where they bite.....gotta get the arms & 🙎♂️🧐💆♂️ covered YES, GET COVERED............
I put on the mesh shirt later that day when the bugs got worse.
Man those are pretty rocks at that beach,I've never seen a place like that before!
Sam sure has a good eye for even the tiniest agates. I like the first striped rock and the sparkly black rock. It’s pretty clever to bring the leg netting and the magnet with you to take out the magnetite when panning. Why are there so many flies on that beach and campground?
The U.P. has a lot of bugs in general. There were mosquitos in the woods and flies on the beach. Any time it's hot and humid, there's a chance of stable flies on the beach. We have them here on Lake Huron too. I was out on my kayak once and they didn't find me until I was about five miles down the beach. The problem then is that they get inside the kayak and you can't really shoo them away. I had my fly suit with me, so I lived to tell about it.
I like that black sandstone. And the flies...gross! Nice fishing pole find. That water looks so cool. It's awful here. TFS ❤️💔🦅 🦅🏏
The water is cold, but not quite as cold as it has been other years. We went a week or two later than usual.
Another great video, Rob! Your rockhounding trips make me want to move to Michigan someday. I find some LSAs here in Kansas, but they're nothing like the great pieces you guys get to search for. :)
I didn’t know they could be found that far away. I think Minnesota and Wisconsin might be the best places to find them.
Hope all is well. I've been working like a crazy man for a while. Settled down again, so back to hounding 8). I burnt my saw, working on getting a new one as well. Safe Journeys. Thank you for posting the hunt.
I have a lot of videos to catch up on.😅
Unreal. Yep..you got the find of the day for sure. LOVE listening to the waves. You gotta get out before the leaves do to skip the bugs. The leaves come out...so do they!
Nancy and I were up there this spring. It was cold and windy, but there were no bugs.
@@MichiganRocks exactly. when the leaves come out....so do the bugs.
Beautiful finds!! You and Sam both seem to really enjoy your time together!! What month did you go? I am going last week of August through the first week of September, I would really love to meet up with you both, Nancy too of course!! Was this at the end of 791 or School Forest Rd? I love driving down those 2 tracks!!
This is on School Forest Road or some road off of it. It's a little trick to find.
I always thought the black sand was oil from boats! Instead! Very cool magnet stuff! 🙋♀️🌞. Flies aside, you could have saddled to ride that waterbug ! Yuck!
I don't think that beetle was a water bug. It was just a bug near the water.
Rob, That is my fav beach to rock hunt, A couple of weeks ago I parked my Jeep JK and started a fire in the pit that’s there…it was so relaxing! I love your videos, keep up the great work.
You almost need a Jeep to get around that one sandy corner.
10:46 Looks like you found Wall-e's head hahaha but Awesome video loved it ! Thanks for posting always learn alot from watching your videos !
Someone else thought it looked like E.T.
Well if this isn't your 'fly-by' episode, I don't what is. Enjoyed your all your rock views.
In a few other videos from this trip I did fly-bys with my drone.
Was that a piece of gold? drain the lake! Seems some rich person would have bought the lake and kicked everyone out by now
No, I didn't find any gold nuggets, but the black sand that's on many of the beaches in that area has flour gold in it. It's tiny, but still really fun to find.
You are striking it right some beautiful colors so much to tumblebim gonna remember gran Maria’s when I come to Michigan this summer I hope I can meet you and same and your wife I don’t know how I will find you but I will find you somehow:) your fan shaun
Should I hide?
Wow 🤩
Beside collecting what do you do with the Little Rock’s do you just keep them in a bucket?
I tumble most of what I find on the beach. Most of them are just stored in the basement, but some are on display around the house.
How do I tell epidote from OP m other green rocks. And if I have granite here in AZ am I allowed to believe I found a piece of Unikite? Or does that only show up in certain areas?
I'm not a geologist, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. I identify it by color. It has a fairly distinctive color, at least here in the Great Lakes. Geologists tell me not to identify rocks by color, but that's the best I can do. Epidote and unakite are found in many places. Some of the rock shops sell unakite from other locations. The Rock Shed sells some from Brazil that doesn't look very much like what I find here in Michigan.
I just did a quick Google search and found several references to Unakite being found in Arizona.
#agat #agates #akik . Teşekkürler.
Would I be able to find agates or other rocks like them in plain old rivers? I'm in alberta, most rivers here have lots of rocks but I haven't seen any, I just started looking though, I also looked at the waterton lake, nothing either, do agates exist there? Or in rivers?
I don't know if agates exist there or not. If you do have agates, they wouldn't be Lake Superior agates, like what you're seeing in this video. Those are only found in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and a couple other nearby states.
I was born and raised in Duluth, Mn, but currently live in Vancouver, Wash
More agates in Duluth, I'll bet.
All those beautiful rocks I could sit there all day looking with bug spray of course
Or you could run to your car and look at them in there, safe from the bugs.
I don't have access to petroskey stones or pudding stones, do you ever sell the stones for tumbling, I would love to buy some golf ball size ones to tumble??
No, I don't sell anything on the Internet. Sorry.
I'd love to know more about your 'gadget' for removing the magnetic sands. I'm using a neodymian magnet in a coin tube...
You can buy a tool to do this, but I built one using this video as a guide. If you are into gold prospecting, this channel is great. ruclips.net/video/riQFzOud3XQ/видео.html
I wouldn’t have expected the flies. I haven’t been there, though… keep meaning to have a look but it’s never happened.
They're not always around, but it isn't unusual either.
Great video. Looking forward to more from this trip. Off to a great start! Thanks...
There are definitely more videos to come. You already know what's in one of them. I couldn't help showing that one off. We'll keep it a secret here for now.
I usually just wear jeans. The flies are heck on my dog. Heading up in a couple weeks I hope.
Oops, I missed your message because it went into my spam folder for some reason. Jeans will definitely keep the flies off, but I just can't stand to wear jeans in the summer.
Ty I just found one like that black sandstone it was a bit more darker brown but looked just like it with the pretty sparkles.
Cool!
And. Lovely agates u found also.
Thank you for replying....
At 3:30 Looked like Mookite, Serape Jasper, Desert Jasper....???
I said wonder stone, but Mookaite looks similar to me.
Cool hunt. Good tip about the mesh pants. Planning a trip in July. Looks like we might need mesh body armor! What’s a wonder stone? Happy July 4th! 🇺🇸🧨🗽Go Blue! 〽️
I also have a mesh shirt/jacket that I put on later that day. Those flies mostly attack your legs, so unless they get really bad, I only wear the pants. They're not expensive and I can fit the pants in a small ziplock bag that's always in my backpack. Check out my Amazon storefront to see the one I have.
I will do that. Seems like a pretty miserable existence without protection!
I am drooling over the omars. Would make a good home for succulents.
Those holes are only about an inch across. Is that all a succulent needs?
Is this the Grand Marais the one on the North Shore of lake superior in Minnesota ???
No, this is one on the southeast shore in Michigan.
Sam should start his own channel! He does a great job 😊
He's better at spotting agates than I am, that's for sure.
Magoty… awesome 😂🍀💚
I’m gonna maybe move to MI from CO am excited how to meet you
We drove to Colorado a few years ago just to drive over a mountain in our Jeep. That's a beautiful state.
Do you by any chance know any beaches with agates on the Ontario side of Lake Superior? I want to get into rock hounding and I love agates but I can't find any beaches except agate island which is extremely difficult to access.
I have never hunted rocks in Canada, so I can't really help you.
@@MichiganRocks Ok, thank you anyways!
9:10 could that be a seam agate, or possible vein or sagenitic ?
Could be, I’m not sure. We find some much more obvious seam agates.
We are going up next Friday! Where did you get the mesh pants?
I have a mesh shirt too. I put that on later that day on the next beach. Check my Amazon storefront in the description of my videos. The bug suit is in there.
👍👍👍👍
Glad to hear that a lot of those banded iron (red & black) rocks tumble nicely! I'm assembling a small bucket of those while in Wisconsin! Thanks for the beach trip! Despite the flies, that looks refreshing...especially as I simmer in 94 degree heat here at home in Indiana!
It’s 98 in Arkansas ! 🥵
It was hot that day and cold and windy the next day. I prefer cold and windy because the flies aren't out then.
Wonderful Michigan wildflowers! Beautiful "cool" lake!! Superior rocks!!! 😊
🤩
Such gorgeous rocks you found
nice so worth the trip
Rob! My Lortone is squeaking badly! What do I do??
Do you oil it every week or two? You're supposed to oil the bearings (the ends of the shafts that aren't actual bearings). Just put a drop or two of something like 3 in 1 oil or sewing machine oil on each end of each bearing.
@@MichiganRocks no I didn't know that thank you!!!
Those flies looked awful!
You don't have them near you? They are awful.
Hope you tumble that "stripey" black rock at 2 min! Loved the very round sparkly rock you probably didn't keep. Thanks for filming with the flies!
The rock at two minutes wasn't black. I'm not sure if you typed the time wrong.
@@MichiganRocks Could be. But I did see the one I'm talking about in your bucket at the end so hopefully it will get tumbled. Thanks, Rob.
@@gingermackeen5741 If it's in the bucket, it will probably get tumbled.
Flies or snow.. hmmm I think I’d go with snow. Thanks for sharing, looks lovely other than the flies
Actually the next day was cold and windy and the flies were gone. No snow either, so I might have been exaggerating.
@@MichiganRocks as long as the rock weren’t gone, that’s the main thing
The omar that Sam found looks like a manatee's nose!
I'm not very familiar with what a manatee's nose looks like, so I'll just take your word for that.
Looks like they cleaned up that spot a bit,..was pretty blasted when I was there last...nice finds u have there!
I have never seen it look bad. I'm glad that if it was a mess someone cleaned it up.
@@MichiganRocks I apologize, let me clarify, lots of timber and trees piled up on the beach, and the water was much higher. You are lucky to have more beach to comb, and no trees laying the beach. The turn around area there seemed to have more trees there too. Is the home made ladder still there?
@@manisteerocks7092 There are still a lot of trees on the bank all along the beach. There are some trees on the beach if you walk far enough, but it's easy to wade out and around them. The ladder is still there.
Hey Rob, technical question. Have you ever put a coating on a rock that wasn’t going to polish? My sister (recently departed) LOVED to collect big rocks, 10 pounders and up, from Lakeport. She also thought the different sandstone was very pretty. Once dried, not so much. She came up with the idea to spray the prettier rocks with urethane or some such shiny goop, and many of them came out great. Some of them looked allot like the samples you pulled up and filmed here. Great shots too!
I'm sorry you lost your sister, John. The only thing I have ever put on rocks is mineral oil. I have only oiled Lake Superior agates. I like to polish my rocks by smoothing them out. Other people prefer a quick and easy spray of polyurethane or something similar. To each his own.
@@MichiganRocks I’m with you on not spraying the rocks, just wondering if it would do anything to preserve the wetted beauty of the sandstone and other rocks that are not going to polish.
@@berjo77 You're right, with some rocks, that's the only thing you can do. I have seen specular hematite coated with epoxy or something and it looked good. Not much else you can do with crumbly rocks.
So, have seen some beautiful blue and green rocks. Are there any that belong to a certain rock group?
There are a lot of green rocks on the beach and some gray-blue rocks. A lot of the green rocks are epidote, but not all of them. I'm not sure exactly what the blue-gray rocks are. There are a few possibilities, but I'm not great at identifying them.
@@MichiganRocks Thank you. Would like to visit Grand Marais some time. My F-I-L (father in-law) was born there.
What happens when you tumble sandstone? Is it too porous causing it to fall to pieces?
I'm pretty sure I tumbled one in this video: ruclips.net/video/z5S4nwYSOBE/видео.html
@@MichiganRocks that vid was in my watch playlist. Thank you for pointing me in that direction. Good instruction. Good experiment.
Nick rocks!
I don't know how you guys can deal with all those flies.... a big NOPE for me.
The rocks are great, they're worth dealing with the flies.
@@MichiganRocks when do they emerge? Then when do they die off?
@@krism2746 I'm not really sure since I'm not up there all summer. I think they're around any time it's hot and humid.
Beautiful orchids u come across at the start.Melissa from Australia 🇦🇺
Those are lady slipper orchids. They were a little past their prime, but still pretty. I found a lot of them a few weeks ago on a bike ride closer to home. I posted some pictures on Instagram. I’ve been using Instagram to post a few pictures that don’t fit here quite as well. The other day, Nancy and I were out kayaking and I got some great pictures of water lilies.

Nice!!!😊
I go to Grand Marais for astrophotography. The skies up there are pristine.
We have some dark sky locations near where I live too. Rockport and Negwegon State park are both designated dark sky areas.
@@MichiganRocks I'll have to check them out! I also love setting up on the beach from the road access at Wilderness State Park.
Thats funny. We were up there a week ago just scoping out new areas for day trips. We were driving more than sitting still so I did not have the camera going. I also grabbed some black sand. But I keep the magnetic material for coil cores for generators.
I have a small box of magnetite sand that I saved for some reason. I thought maybe my wife could use it in science class or something, but I don't think it really fit her curriculum.
@@MichiganRocks You could try selling it on ebay. Some people buy it for crafting or art. If it had some flour gold in it, some people buy it and try to get the microscopic gold from it.
@@michiganprospectors That's too much bother. I don't sell anything on the Internet because I really don't like packaging things up to mail out. Thanks for the idea though.
@@MichiganRocks Yeah, I get that
A lovely video, except for the flies!
We have those too in the summer near the kineret... Super annoying and they bite badly! You need protection for your hands as well.
My hands are moving enough that it's not bad. I did put on the shirt later in the day when they actually got worse. That's next week's video.
Nice rocks too bad the flies were bad. Thanks for sharing your trip.
That's just something you have to be prepared for up there. They're pretty miserable, but the rocks are worth it.
Ah, those flies look rough. I feel like I've lucked out every time I've been to the UP and haven't had any bad fly days. Great finds by both of you, I'm very curious of the wonderstone looking one.
I have lucked out a lot of times too with the flies, but I’m always prepared with my fly suit just in case.
Nice finds Rob and Sam! very cool. And you need to be really tough to live in the U.P. although rumor has it that there is sometimes up to a week between snow and fly season, and then a week between mosquito and snow season, LOL.
That sounds too good to be true.
where did you get the fishnet pants at
You can find them in my Amazon storefront in the description of all my videos. I also have the shirt and I just bought a shirt and pants for my wife since she's been going out more often with me. I can fit them in two ziplock bags that I always keep in my backpack.
