- I headed to South Dakota for some agate hunting and was lucky enough to find my first one, which makes it my biggest, right? My guide, Jason, also found his biggest one ever on the same day.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

I also have an Amazon storefront. This is where you can find other products you may have seen in my videos. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn't cost you extra.

I love it when you cut to the clips of the cut rocks right after you find them.
I'm glad you appreciate that.
That was great! Jason is such a good guy. You really played off each other. Very entertaining and some amazing finds. Thank you....
We got along great right off the bat. I had just met him about an hour before making this video.
Jason sells some amazing Fairburn, Teepee Canyon, and other wraps at his Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/MadBadgerLapidary
Congrats on finding your very own Fairburn agate!
Thanks! I was very lucky to find that.
You guys are hilarious together! It was fun to watch you two one-up each other! Beautiful finds, congrats to you both.
I was there for three days and laughed the whole time. Jason is hilarious.
Rob and Jason, don't underestimate how many people are fascinated with rocks🤩
Since I'm no longer able to hunt as much, I thoroughly enjoy watching others find treasures.
So glad you both found Fairburns🥳
Like I told Jason, anyone watching my channel will definitely be fascinated.
Wowee that is a fantastic find! Congratulations to both of you! Thanks for taking us a long and introducing us to Jason. This was a great collaboration ❤
I had a ball hunting with Jason. Lots of fun and lots of laughs.
Jason is awesome. I really love how the rock hounding community comes together. It's the best people ever! Great finds guys! God bless you
He's one of the most fun guys I've ever hunted rocks with. I'd love to go back for more.
Welcome to SD!
Thanks!
You had lots of great stuff this trip ...but your own fairburn is just amazing!! Congrats on your find, Rob! And isn't it great when you meet someone that jives with you so easily haha. Instant camaraderie, Jason is a fun visitor to the channel....and That Wrapping! ...just incredible, very cool stuff. Awesome content :)
Yeah, we hit it off right away.
Attack of the stripey rocks!!. Congrats on the Fairburn find.
Thanks.
How awesome! Fairburn agates very beautiful. Their fortifications set them apart from others. Really like Jason. His work is excellent! Glad you collaborated with him.
I had just met Jason about an hour before the beginning of this video. We got along great right off the bat.
Wow! Both of you had some awesome finds! Those two fairburns are amazing as were your other rock finds! But his wire wraps were amazing! Gosh they were gorgeous and I will definitely be checking out his Etsy store! Thanks Rob!😊
Jason will really appreciate that. Thanks.
You two are exactly alike in your love for rocks. It was such a pleasure listening to you. I'm a West Coast rockhounder and I drool every time I see your beaches. I hope to visit them in person some day.
I didn't see too many beaches in South Dakota.
Holy smokes!! That stuff is beautiful and those pendants are gorgeous!
Agreed.
Cool you both found fairburns and thanks Jason for sharing your finds and wraps. FWIW the porous skin is pretty common on prairie agate. Any day i hear a meadowlark sing is a good day.
I didn't notice them being all that porous. Of course, I have very little experience with them.
@@MichiganRocks you mentioned the porous rind on the rock at 5:30 ish is why i mentioned it, see it often on prairies and jaspers in and around the black hills
Wow! Those wraps are exquisite ❤
Yep, he's good!
I am so happy to not see you dropping every quartz rock 😂
I went a little overboard on my vacation.
That Fairburn and the second one are just gorgeous!
That was one of my motivations to drive all the way to South Dakota.
Awesome video, Rob! Those Fairburn’s are some real beauties. It was nice to see Jason, to put a face and personality to the name on the forum! 😊
I had no idea what he looked like until I pulled into his driveway. After I found out what he looked like, I decided to go rock hunting with him anyway. Ha!
Some great finds that day. And Jason's rock at 17:50 was astonishing.
Can you imagine finding that in your landscaping rock?
I don't know how I stumbled across your channel but it's been a real Godsend. I took geology as a subject in school a thousand years ago but never really did anything with it. Watching your videos has made me want to go out onto some of my local beaches (UK) and see what I can find. I don't get out much because of a dodgy hip but this could really get me out the house. Thanks.
You're welcome! I hope you're able to find something fun.
@@MichiganRocks thank you, I can't go anywhere now without looking at rocks in quite the same way 😆
Looks like so much fun!
Loving your rock tour, Rob! The Fairburns are amazing. Thank you!
Rob, you and Jason were like two little boys in a toy store. I love it!!! Awesome spot for rock hunting. 🙂
Jason is a lot of fun. I could hunt with him for days, which is exactly what I did!
Beautiful, beautiful wire wrapping!! 😍
Beautiful finds! I thought I was the only one who gets that excited when I find an agate. Lol.
I thought everyone got excited about finding agates.
Loved this video, there are people who are fascinated by rocks. Seeing this reminds me of going rock hunting as a kid in Wyoming. After all these years I still have a rock collection.
I plan to have my collection for a long time.
What a wonderful episode. That pile of rocks is mind-boggling. I remember kicking around the edge of the Sierra Nevadas where the rivers dumped all their cobbles after the thaw. So many of these are damed now. Candy stores were fine for kids but I preferred the rocks. I'm just fine with striped rocks, and quartz whatever rocks, even those magits.
Rock shops are much better than candy shops, I agree!
What a fun video, two blokes with rocks in their heads…😂😂😂😂. Great to see people who just love good rocks having fun. Lovely finds too, those agates are awesome.
My mom used to tell me I had rocks in my head. Must be true.
@@MichiganRocks mother knows best..hahaha.
Fairburn agates are so beautiful! I really need one for my collection!
They're just laying around on the ground there. Go pick one up. (I wish it was that easy.)
What a nice rockhounding buddy! Jason's wire wrapping is fantastic! I'm going to his Etsy store now!
Yes, he's very talented.
Loved this video! Jason is a good new friend! Fabulous stripy rocks!!!!! Fairburns are on my life list!
Jasons wraps are amazing!
You could buy a pendant from Jason and check one off that list.
Omg,that stone was so beautiful(well all of them are).
So nice of ur new friend to show u the place and him finding one too was a bonus👍💕
He was a great host and guide.
Jason’s creations are GORGEOUS!!
I love the editing on this video! Going from the field to the cut is great! Instant gratification 😊
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Incredible finds!! So glad you're getting to live the rockhound dream. Thanks for taking us along!
When I started doing this, I never imagined I'd be going on a trip to Minnesota, Montana, and South Dakota just to look for rocks. You're right, I'm living the dream!
Holy wha...pure stunning. You shoulda seen me sitting here with my hand holding up my mouth! WOW!
You crack me up.
WOW ~ First rock was a Stunner! Love it.. Bands are far apart & unusual.. So glad you both found a Fairburn within minutes of each other.. Making you both Happy hunters..
I couldn't believe how lucky I was to find that.
So thankful for people like jason... hopefully some day i will get to visit these Places, and have someone willing to meet up and hound with
Wonderful adventure guys! Jason is the man. I sent him a tumbled tiger eye and he created a beautiful wrap for it that my wife absolutely adores. When we were in South Dakota he offered to take us rock hounding but we had some old dogs with us that wouldn't lend well to us being gone for an extended time. Jason is first class and I hope someday we can get together. I'm so glad you guys found some Fairburns. And I am really jealous 🙂 Thanks Rob & Jason!
Yep, Jason is great. I couldn't have asked for a better host, or a more colorful Fairburn.
Roooob!! At 9:45, this rock is SUPER BEAUTIFUL! 😉 Don't discredit it just because it doesn't have stripes 😜
Nope, no stripes = not beautiful. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!
This shared day of fun is a "Pebble Pickers" delight. We were going to try TP Canyon one trip but they'd had a fire and it was closed. Last year I picked up SD rose quartz while walking with Cisco. Just road crush and it tumbled beautifully. I like what you found (yes; Rose Quartz) in that amazing rock pile. Your friends wire wraps are amazing! See you on the page. M.T.
Jason wanted to take me to TeePee Canyon, but the roads were too wet while I was there.
Very interesting and looks really fun! Thanks to your new friend 😊
So fun seeing rocks that are so unfamiliar. And gorgeous wraps! TFS Rob. ❤️🏏🎸
Familiar to you, but new to me.
@@MichiganRocks I said unfamiliar.
@@icatz Oops! I see that now. I should slow down and read more carefully.
@@MichiganRocks You get a lot of comments. Skimming is required. No worries.
Hi Rob, very nice agates, your friend Jason did so nice pendants !! love them, a great collaboration , thanks
He's very talented. I can just barely do my little groove wraps.
@@MichiganRocks me too !!
Lived here my whole life and I have never seen those beautiful Agates. Live on wrong end of state. Glad you found SD beauties.
They're awesome agates.
😍😍😍😍😍AWESOME hunting!!! Thanks for sharing !!!
19:39 really love these Mad Badger Lapidary pendants!
Go look at Jason's Etsy site. He has a lot more pictures of many different pendants there.
That was super cool! Thanks guys for sharing!! I am loving the road trip, Rob!
Beautiful rocks & bandings there ❤👍👍👍
Those Fairborn agate are frickin amazing good job
That interesting shape you liked inside the prairie agate had a shadow...a cat-shaped shadow. So, I think that's a rare prairie kitty agate...maybe, one of a kind😉!
Kitty agate, huh? If they're rare and Fairburns are rare then it probably _is_ one of a kind.
So glad I came across your channel. Learning a lot and its soothing to watch you gather rocks
I'm glad to have you tagging along!
Darn! The one that cracked into pieces was so pretty. But you got to make up for it with the beautiful Fairburn!
You give me hope for rock hounding when I’m not near my beautiful lakes ❤❤
That's just the way the rock crumbles sometimes.
First time I saw a Fairburn, I was hooked for life! One of my favorite agates by far!
I love our Lake Superior agates, but these are right up there too.
I'm right behind you, lol. Just arrived in S Dakota looking forward to finding some of those lovlies myself. You continue to inspire. I was trying to contain my salivating over your finds😊
Good luck!
Oh my that Fairburn is a super find.
You may have noticed that I was thrilled with mine.
You two should collab more often. The energy and dynamic between you guys is really cool and makes the rockhounding even more fun.
Min 12:19! Wow! Great find! 😝
…I commented too soon…min 13:16🤪😁wow!! The agates in SD are incomprehensible!!
I'd love to, but it's an 18 hour drive.
FANTASTIC WRAPPING ‼️‼️‼️😊
Love the Fairburn agate!
Wow such beautiful agates. All the rocks are beautiful. I need to learn how to wire wrap better as well. His work was so amazing. I would love to take classes on it.
I enjoy doing the rock work much, much more than the jewelry making. I need to force myself to sit down and learn to wrap sometime.
I love all of it too. I have tried simple wire wrapping. I have a channel on here I watch to learn more. Just haven't had the time with all my appointments. I'll get there though.
🙋♀️❤ The pattern on the first rock you sliced, looks like a sailing ship on a wavy⛵ sea!
Somehow I missed that.
Awesome finddiand LOVE the wraps!
Wow, is a cool agate. And your friend makes some awesome wraps.
He sure does!
Nice rock pile! Cool agates. I don’t have any South Dakota agate I’m impressed 😊
I have one!
@@MichiganRocks That’s one more than I have! Lol congratulations 🎈🎉
Amazing finds! Those Fairborn agates looked absolutely incredible. 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
They're right up there with Lake Superior agates.
congrats! We went to French creek last year, and going back this year, they are def hard to find.
Yep, I was thrilled to find one.
Wow, great Agate!
That was awesome! Love those Fairburns…and his wire wrapped pieces!
Yeah, Jason knows how to wrap.
This was amazing! Learned so much. Thank you for taking us along.
You're welcome, Susie!
Looking forward to see the tumbled rocks from this adventure!!
One of these days.
Congratulations on finding your very own Fairburn agate! Well done! I pretty much loved all of your finds though!
Thanks, Julee.
Oh wow, that looks like so much fun.
So many beautiful finds.
Just hanging out with Jason is a lot of fun. The rocks were a bonus.
@@MichiganRocks what an amazing journey you are having.
Meeting up with all the other rock hounds is the best part, the excitement of haning out with people that understand your love of rocks.
One day you need to come to New Zealand.
@@nicolagraynewzealandrockho8976 Before I retired and before I started this channel, I was seriously thinking about getting a job at our tiny local airport as a part time job after retiring. I planned to do something to make a little money to supplement my pension, and one perk of that is that you can fly anywhere that Delta Airlines goes for free. You can only go when there are extra seats available, but it would still be a great way to see the world fairly cheaply. Then Covid happened and I started making a little money with my videos, so I've decided to put my effort into this and not get another job.
New Zealand was one of the first places I would have visited. It looks gorgeous there and I wouldn't have to worry about a language barrier so it would be a little less scary than flying to some other places.
@@MichiganRocks that would have been a great plan.
Your channel is really good, if you ever get to NZ, be sure to let me know, I'll hook you up with some really cool rock hounds over here.
@@nicolagraynewzealandrockho8976 Ok, will do!
Hey Rob, there definitely are smoky and rose quartz in lake Michigan! Heading up to Alpena this weekend to find rocks!!
I've seen some stuff that I thought might be smoky quartz, but never rose quartz. I don't hunt Lake Michigan that much though.
Very cool trip - beautiful wraps too
Wow... just wow those are beautiful. Dude you're wire wrapping is amazing. So Rob are you going to learn how to wire wrap I look forward to some tutorials
I have much more interest in working on rocks than doing wire wrapping. I should learn how to do it, but I know I'll probably just keep putting it off.
What an amazing Fairburn, Rob! Great find!
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the prairie agate. Part of me thinks they're really cool, for like 15 seconds, and the other part is like "Meh, kinda bland."
Yeah, I know what you mean. Sort of like a consolation prize for not finding a Fairburn.
@@MichiganRocks ... and you have to take it, because you don't want to come across as ungrateful... so there's really only one option here-drive a couple of miles down the road and then "give it back to God." (aka, toss it out the window) 😉
Congratulations! on the fairburn. Your travel videos have been top notch.
Thanks, Margaret!
Sweet Fairburn find! Congrats! Jason has some beautiful stuff.
He's really good at cabbing and wire wrapping.
Another very cool video, Rob. I always enjoy the new adventures.
Thanks, Mike.
I've been through SD several times but never had time to stop off and search... next trip, time is going to be set aside so I can play!! Love you vids Rob.
I really enjoyed my time there. Jason and his wife were a big part of that.
Amazing finds, even the not so special rocks look great.
Lots of fun stuff in that pile of rocks.
That first rock you found is beautiful!
Fantastic finds!!
Quite different. Enjoyed. 👍
Think of all the agates you left behind in that huge pile of rocks! Jason looks very familiar to me. Does he also post videos? I feel like I met him before, but can't remember where.
I know, we only searched the surface. I feel like we should have moved that pile over a few feet, one rock at a time.
So cool!! I’m heading over to Etsy now! 🏃🏻♀️💨
Jason will appreciate that!
Absolutely stunning.❤❤
These are really nice finds!
Well I'm buying something from that shop. I love Etsy. I just bought some wire to get into wiring. I cannot wait. I have a Fire Agate to do first. 😎🔥❤️🌍👑 Very cool video. I always love them.
Great! Jason will appreciate that. He told me he made a few sales since this video came out.
Impressive rocks!
WOW - so awesome 🙂
That location is on my bucket list! I'd love to get out there hopefully in the next few years.
It was a lot of fun. Very different than hunting rocks on a beach.
Beautiful.
Blue chalcedony. The Dakota's and Montana have a lot of multi colored chert and you guys are finding it. I am almost 100% sure the rock you found @ 15:20 is a prairie agate, I think if you polish the prairie agate you will be surprised how nice they are I sell it on my Etsy store. More fun I wish I had your not job, happy hounding.
Thanks Kelly! That one will be headed for the tumbler at some point.
Great vibe in this video. Love your finds! 🤩
Almost 2 mins in: “idk but it’s pretty” that is how I rock hunt as well 😂
That's all you really need to know. Knowing more is a bonus, but that's a great starting point.
Wow….nice guy. I’m usually too snobby for wraps, but his were extraordinary!
Your first rock looked like a storm. I wonder if it would take a polish? I hope you show us the tumbled batch, later. Nice finds. Thanks.
I will show you the rocks when they're done tumbling, but it's going to be awhile. I have some of the Montana agates in, but there are a lot more to go.
@@MichiganRocks good to hear.
Those wraps look amazing, they have a victorian look to them. Why were the rocks dumped there?
I'm not 100% sure, but I think they were dug up right there for gravel or fill or something.
