  • Wanted to take a ride around the freeway loop and figured I'd shoot some video on my FZR. Unfortunately, I need to drive quite a ways from my house for any exciting roads.

      @@projenitor2387 Ahhhh so you're really planning to get in there! I like the double headlight models a bit more than mine. Seem a little more 90s. I did some maintenance this winter, but stopped short of pulling the valve cover. If it had locknut types, I'd have gotten in there. Wasn't interested in doing bucket and shims without a good reason... Granted.. I still probably should have measured. Oops.
      Instead I just changed all the coolant hoses, cleaned the carburetor real good, and buttoned up some of the electrical.

    1996 FZR600 is my first bike. I think I've spent about $2400 on it so far including the cost of the bike plus new cables, clutch plates, rebuilt carbs with new jets, rebuilt forks with race tech upgrades, and a busa rear shock. It's been a fun toy, but I question why it's alive, so I will ride it till it dies.

    • @matttriestodothings

      Oh man, sounds like $2400 has you really well setup with getting the forks and rear suspension setup. "But I question why it's alive" is something I'd do constantly with the FZR!

    I have owned one in 1991/1992 and my current one from 2009 till now. Brilliant bikes and Yes the first one had a full Vance and Hines supersports. And my current one has a Vance and Hines supersports slip on can. Enjoy your bike 👍🏍️👌.

      They're really damn cool bikes, and the engine is the least fussy engine I've ever had. Yamaha put together a great package with the FZR600. My only gripe is the limited tire selection because of the 18" rear, but oh well. That's just a product of the time it was developed. Damn cool bikes.
      Hope you and your FZR have a great riding season!

      It takes less effort to save these bikes than others too. I did less maintenance on my FZR than any other bike I've had, and it ran better than all of them. Yamaha built a great package for this one.

    I have put 15K miles on an FZR600/ My Speed Twin is quick. It weighs a little more than the FZR. It has more power but why is the FZR so much FASTER? The Triumph runs out of beans at 120mph but as I remember the FZR just kept building speed. What a great bike. Please keep it roadworthy. Thank you.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  3 года назад +1

      Surprised to hear that the FZR feels faster! I actually ended up selling the FZR--was pretty sad, but I felt good about the guy I was selling it to. Sold it for $900 since that's what I had bought it for. I ran out of space and wanted to get a bike for track use. The 18" rear wheel of the FZR was my biggest gripe with the bike--there's just no tire options for the thing.
      I had a lot of fun with the FZR and did all of my initial wrenching learning on it. Everything beyond an oil change. If it had a 17" rear I'd probably still have it. But I'm glad to know it went to a good home because it's going to be seeing a lot more miles than if I had it in my overcrowded stable right now.

    Did the R6 calipers fit both front and back? What year was the R6 from? Did you have to change to R6 brake lines or keep the ones for the FZR?
    Disclaimer:
    Got an FZR600 myself, thinking about changing the calipers and brake lines.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  11 месяцев назад

      I don't believe I touched the back brake caliper.
      Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can answer this since I sold the bike a few years ago. I know that I didn't change the master cylinder because the FZR brake lines wouldn't match up with it. I don't even remember if it was a 2 or a 3 piece brake line though.
      Your best bet is to go to a bike-specific FZR forum. I'm checking my eBay history, and it looks like I purchase this item in 2016 (7 years ago.. shit), and all I can find is item description "YAMAHA R6 R6 YZF 600 FRONT BRAKES CALIPERS MASTER CYLINDER R1 99 00 01 02 Y25"

    I have a 98 fzr600 I'm working on it still I put individual air pods on and it came with aftermarket exhaust but I think my issue is the bike is getting to much air what you think?

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  4 года назад

      I suppose it depends on the type of issues that you're experiencing. Does the bike idle fine, but it hesitates in certain RPM ranges? Does it feel down on power all over? Will it not even idle? The diagnosis is going to depend on what you're experiencing.
      Individual pods are always going to cause headaches because the carburetors weren't designed for them, and they allow inconsistent turbulent air flow into the throttle bodies that are difficult to resolve. Not that it can't be done--only that it generally takes a lot of trial and error and is unlikely to work as well as the stock airbox.

      @matttriestodothings  4 года назад

      Still have it. I've spent the winter fighting a Honda vf500 (ongoing) . I spent basically a whole year fighting a Suzuki bandit. And I've never fought once with the fzr.
      It doesn't make sense. It's the best running bike I own, and I put less resources into it than anything else. I did pull the carburetor out this winter and go thru it, and also replaced all the coolant lines and intake boots. But still. I bought it for very little, and it's just trooper. I keep trying to bring myself to sell it and I can't.

    • @kennethharless9696

      That's awesome. I have a 92. Right now I'm going threw the carbs and trying to figure out some fuel issues. It was running awesome then it just shut off. Waited a little bit then it started right up and drove fine again,then shut off on my way to work. After work I started it up fine,idle was good made it back home and tore it apart. There's a little rust in the tank so im figuring that it's clogging at the carb inlet's

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  4 года назад +1

      @@kennethharless9696 reading your explanation, I was coming to the same thought. It's pulling debris through from the tank.
      Another thing to check is battery terminals. Clean them up good and make sure it's all clamped right. It may be jostling just the slightest but causing the cutout.
      I'm surprised how rarely i see fzr's because I think they were pretty popular back in their day. But I'm not sure I've ever even seen another of the single headlight ones in person.

      @kennethharless9696 4 года назад +1

      I just put a new battery in it. Haha I found the problem 😅 I pulled the flotes out and behind the screen there was alot of rust particles and one of the screens were completely blocked

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  4 года назад +1

      @@kennethharless9696 glad you found the problem! The electrical terminal thing I mentioned just because I ran into it last night on my vf500f.
      If you're going to derust the tank, I'd highly recommend getting a gallon of evaporust, putting it in, and just repositioning the tank so it covers different surfaces over the course of a day or two. Way easier than more elaborate methods and works better. Rinse with old gas instead of water so it doesn't flash rust. Gas might be cheaper than water right now with how oil prices are going, lol.
