Dan Liker is like an encyclopedia of Metal dude. He's not one of those old Heads (which I respect highly) who got stuck in the 80's Thrash and didn't expand his horizons as Metal kept getting more extreme. Dan went with the flow and discovered more and more amazing bands and has respect for many of the great Extreme Metal bands of this day. He knows his stuff. Notice he said Darkthrone was 2nd wave Black Metal. Anyone who knows metal knows that Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost and Bathory were the first wave originators of the genre. He gets it

Exactly, he's grown with the scene and knows his favorite band's history, and like you said, he didn't just stick with thrash, as an extreme metal fan he discovered black metal and grindcore as well and wanted to start bands in those styles of music as well, unfortunately people tried to accuse him of jumping on some bandwagon when all he was doing was playing music that he loved

Delightful interview, thank you! I'm learning a lot from these metal masterclasses! I didn't know Dan Lilker but I've listened to Nuclear Assault a couple of times in the past and it's great ! And the guy knows a lot!
I agree: Darkthrone's song "In The Shadow Of The Horns" is very punk and also my favorite in that album. It makes me think of the band Bad Brains. That part after you hear Fenriz screaming "unholy black metal!" (minute 4). Bad Brains' song "How Low Can A Punk Get?" sounds a little bit like "In The Shadow..." Those drums!
I also like the "Old Star" album (2019). Not as raw as the first ones but still kicking arse!
Necrosexual: it would be great to get an interview with Fenriz! I follow him on Spotify (Gylve) and he has some great playlists going on. He has a great taste in music, no matter the style!

There was even Second wave Black Metal bands that are not from norway such as WORSHIP HIM by Samael, and RITUAL by Master's Hammer, prior to A Blaze in the Northern Sky

What is the name of that "nasty, vicious" band Dan Lilker talks about around minute 32:26? Did he day that the band's from Spain? As a Spaniard, I'm curious!

Nocturno did not switch to bass for A Blaze. Dag played as a session musician. Guess he hated bm !

Not seltic frost. Your pronounce it as Keltic. Celtic frost isn't referencing celtic us team or celtic football club but rather the ancient kelts. KELT. NOT. SELT.
