A friend of mine has a U47, not sure exactly which kind it was, but it made my vocals sound absolutely fantastic. But he sasid there was somethign wrong with it (even though it sounded fantastic), and he had it repaired, and now it doesn't sound as good, anymore. :P If I understand it correctly, it was a tube version, and tehy replaced the tube section with a new transistor, or something. I really don't know, but in either case, it's a damned fantastic mic, and I'm considering buying it off my friend. I think he wanted about $1200 for it, about 10 years ago.
It can't compare to u87 or even u67... even clones get the "u47" sound right since a lo-fi mic that sounds quite dull by today's standards is the easiest to emulate.
Nice review! I must admit it sounds better than the lap mic part because of the proximity, but it's funny how this is more expensive than the u87ai which is an awesome microphone. Yes, this was used on a lot of classic records, but just because it was one of the best tools of the trade back then. Now Neumann makes far better microphones and they know this but just want to catch the hype and get back some of that market share that dummy mic clones manufacturers have basically stolen from them by using their brand and models.
Well, this as I understand is a field-effect transistor remake of the u47 so it is also tubeless. I know the original and it sounds similar to that tube version, which is - pretty average and lo-fi, not only in my opinion, but also by simply checking the specs. lol.
ehhh put it against a $100 mic I have. I will melt the Nuemann. My $100 mic is a special one you wouldn't use for this purpose at all but it works WAY better.
Love his voice. I can hear him talk all day
I love these videos! Thanks Wes
Thanks! My pleasure.
Love this channel!

Don't get me wrong, it was a nice microphone - I have records of 30-40 years ago recorded on that one, but it's not what I'd use now.
what means "far better".
favorite one!

and what is that mic, sir?
Dream on
If you said $1000, I would maybe believe you, but $100 will get you an electret condenser, or some dodgy transformerless dynamic at best.
