    Wow, really interesting results. I love what the U87Ai does. It's just so clear and "basic" sounding but not to any fault. I can see why it's a standard "workhorse" and I want one now. That said, the Chandler just has a way of making the voice sound more big and present, it adds interest to the sound, where the U87 kind of just stays all the way out of the way. Sort of an enhanced version of the truth. So I guess ultimately I preferred the Chandler in this shootout, for that reason.

    • @EandVEntertainment
      @EandVEntertainment  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks Monkey Dangus. I've been playing around with my U87ai a lot lately. It has this transparency and cleanness that really works. It's also a bit of a chameleon and can really change character depending on the preamp you use. The Chandler has a finished sound. It's a little bigger than life. I like it. It's nice.

    • @martinjohnbutler
      @martinjohnbutler 6 лет назад +3

      I jumped around back and forth to get quick comparisons this time, and the Neumann's definitely thinner when you try it that way. That's not necessarily better or worse. I prefer bigger and the like the way a tube handles harder hits in a smoother way. The Chandler almost compresses itself naturally. I love the 87, used it everyday for 15 years but would take the Chandler over it in a minute.

    The REDD was good. It really worked on the operatic piece. However, my ears perked up every time the U87 started up. There were some beautiful moments where the voice really rang out and gave some expressive and interesting tones. The REDD was more controlled, which could be nice, but it loses some of the magic.

    oh man - great singing! both of these are incredible. the 87 is just a bit rounder, familiar, and i love that personally - i sing through a flea 48 superfet so of course i dig that darker thing...but that REDD is big city classy and i'd love to get that in the studio at some point. like any creative tool, a different guitar, etc, it would likely guide a performer into some new spaces they haven't sung into.

    • @EandVEntertainment
      @EandVEntertainment  6 лет назад

      Aaron Strumpel thanks! Yeah the REDD is really nice with a unique sound. The FleA 48 FET, huh? I just finally picked up a FleA 49. I too like the weightier sound. I haven’t even had a chance to feature it on the channel yet. It may be my favorite microphone for my voice. I had so much luck with my Advanced Audio CM49 and got a chance to work with a FleA 47. The U47 has never really been right on my voice, but after hearing the quality of FleA’s 47 I went out of my way to try their 49 and got hooked. How is the 48 Super FET? I’ve heard good things, but haven’t tried one yet.

    The REDD 47 without the Low-Contour on sounds best by quite a bit to me, and I mostly just listened with the background music in the mix and it really stands out when listening in the mix, that the REDD no LC is what I'd use for your excellent voice. Not sure what the LC is doing, taking out some low end maybe? The U87 sounded kinda harsh or brash in comparison. The REDD sounds huge, smooth, with some umph in the low end. I'm very interested in the REDD again. This is the first clip i've heard of it and I've looked in the past, but for a long time just couldn't find anything. I'm also interested in the new TG mic. Preferred the Chandler on low volume sections but thought it was harder on the ears in the louder parts. Possible the Chandler isn't broken in and the Neumann was? If it opens up on louder passages it would be near perfect. Easy to see why the u87 is so popular though, it never seems to do anything poorly.

    great vocal demo! thank you for letting us know the chandler mic was used for the narration. is there any way you could do a quick voiceover (non-singing) of the u87 vs. the chandler? the u87 is the top voiceover mic in the world. voiceovers are usually done at a mic distance of about 4-12 inches away from the mic, in a reasonably echo-free environment. i'm guessing the chandler in the narration portion of your video might be further away than that. i've never seen a chandler voiceover demo, and the u87 is sitting right there as the perfect comparison. if you have a few minutes to do a quick comparison, that would be awesome!

    • @EandVEntertainment
      @EandVEntertainment  4 года назад

      I didn't double record the voice over. I just used the Chandler for this video and decided to purchase a FleA 49 instead of the Chandler after doing this demo. There is some U87ai voice over done on my Behind the Scenes #1 Microphone shoot out. I go through each mic in the shoot out and all dialogue is done with the microphone being talked about. You can see that here: ruclips.net/video/Svcqgc1RV_M/видео.html
      In my personal opinion the U87ai and TLM170 are my favorite voice over microphones. They are really neutral in that context and don't add too much flavor. The TLM170 is very warm and neutral while the U87ai adds a little air to the sound. Whenever someone has recorded VO here they are put in the optimal spot in my room where the vocal performance was done and the microphone is about 8-12" from them unless they are doing a "voice of god" kind of VO. The Chandler has a sound it imparts on everything you record with it. It was about 2 ft from me just out of the camera shot for the VO for this, and y control area isn't the best for recording, especially when it was set up like this.

    • @richs.820
      @richs.820 4 года назад

      @@EandVEntertainment What made you decide to go with the Flea49? I was looking at both of these mics and was trying to find the one that has more of a sony C800G sound character such as brightness and the way it sits in the mix. Thank you for your time to put these videos up and the responses.

    • @EandVEntertainment
      @EandVEntertainment  4 года назад

      @@richs.820 I was looking for an old school sound, sort of a modern Mario Lanza kind of sound. I owned an Advanced Audio CM49 which I featured in a few videos and loved it, so I got my self in front of a couple of real deal M49s as well as U47s and U67s and on my voice the M49s kept giving me that sound I was looking for on most styles that I sing and the U67 seemed to fill in the gaps when the M49 didn't. The FleA 49 is really close to a real deal M49. I was lucky enough to demo a few of them through different retailered before I bought mine. If I had opted to put an AC701K in it I think it would have just sounded like a brand new M49. I tried one with the ac701k and it was incredible sounding.
      I have never been too interested in the Sony C800G as its not typically a microphone you'll see up on people in the genres I record and I personally tend to prefer warmth to presence in the recordings I make. The Chandler is more like a fat sounding Sony C800G or ELA M251 and if that's the sound you're looking for I would try to get in front of the Chandler. Golden Age Pro just announced their take on the C800G with their first high end microphone the GA-800G. It's still 4k though and I haven't heard clips of it yet. On a budget, if you don't mind the wait, check out Stam Audio's version of it. There are some nice clips of it on RUclips next to the real deal. Stam makes good sounding pieces, but they have a horrible back log and it can take a while to get your gear.

    Beautiful singing...oh, so music is not doomed after all! Thank God. Any way both are great, but the chandler is better bang for the buck given it is infused with the preamp already at $4,800 compared to the $3,500 Neumann

    Can't believe I'm gonna say this, but the u87ai sounded better on the 1st song. The Chandler was a bit muffled, and sounded hotter during louder parts; which is strange given it's supposed to be a slower tube mic. The chandler sounded better on the operatic part.

    What did do on the Redd chain to handle the mic self noise?

  • @CrustPunx
    @CrustPunx 10 месяцев назад

    The room is not muffled, those panels on the wall don't solve anything. And it's not clear what kind of preamplifier is in there. If there is a preamp, it's dead and not plugged in. According to this singer it would sound about the same on a $50 t.bone 450. Why pay more if it won't make much difference anyway?

    • @EandVEntertainment
      @EandVEntertainment  10 месяцев назад

      Sorry for any confusion here. The Chandler was only using its internal preamp as designed, and went into a line in on my Apollo. The U87ai went straight into my Apollo using its preamp without an emulation. I didn't feature any specific one on this video, as I wanted people to hear the mic and not be influenced by the sonic character of a premap. So I used a clean preamp with the U87ai.
      Yes, those panels weren't the best and have been upgraded since. Still they helped tame a lot of room echo. Also, the styles of music I work in, a slightly live room does better than a completely dead one.

    The U87 sounded great but the Redd with low contour mode killed the U87 AI especially in the mix. The U87 had a hollow quality that some might call clarity. I own the redd and it is fantastic. The U87 is great as well. There was just too big of a difference in the mix with the low contour mode. The Redd was commanding! I still love my Neumann but prefer U87 Classic over AI. I would like for something middle of the road, but in your budget that’s difficult. The TLM 102 might not be a bad choice. I would want some kind of U67 style mic for a tube mic, but there aren’t any in your price range. A U87 style mix might not be a bad choice either, but they are on the modern bright side.
