The concepts are great. My favorite universal hotkey experience starts with setting Caps Lock as my Alt Modifier and resting my pinky finger on it, move Attack and Stop commands to your mouse buttons 4 & 5, move the D and F abilities to S and D, while resting your middle 3 fingers on Q, W, E. Then place your thumb on the V key and set the V key and all the keys around it for items. Make the A key your teleport scroll, and the X key your neutral item. Put all your shop commands / courier commands on the mouse wheel. I programmed moving the scroll wheel left and right to open shop/grab stash and Deliver items/Select courier. Wheel up and down courier burst / shield and Buy items / Quick Buy. Put the chat button on Mouse button 3. Customize this as you see fit.
The hotkeys feature did caught me offguard, back in the day I used normal cast for everything but I stoped DOTA in 2014. Played League and Heroes fo the Storm for a long time and then started to use quick cast. Came back 1 month ago and felt something was off, couldnt save myself with Eul's or this new Cape anymore. I didnt know that quick cast wasnt compatable with double tap until this video, thx man. I'm an old school SC1 player, so I'm used to move my mouse all over the place too.
One thing I learned from wow is that you can move your entire keymap one key to the right. So instead of having qwer you do wert so you have extra keys to press with your pinky (qaz, etc) and an overall bigger keymap.
With the quick cast normal cast items thing, I have certain slots as quick cast and others as normal. It allows some on the fly adjustment for save items vs offensive items. Also, I have accidentally clicked minimap while running away and died so I switched to minimap on right
Camera-Grip preventing you from left-clicking, meaning you can't pan and left-click at the same time (mentioned at 20:40), is actually not a disadvantage compared to edge panning, because someone who is edge panning can't pan the camera and target an ability simultaneously either since their mouse will be out of position to do so.
There is another solution: move mini map to the right corner instead of the left corner. This will never happen to you again. it might take few games to adapt but I like it now.

i know im quite late to the party but just wanted to share sth i've learnt as of late: you can assign multiple keys to the same ability: one for Normal cast, one for Quickcast, one for Toggle cast and the thing is, wheeling the mouse scroll button when it is set as a quickcast button for an ability or item, doesnt trigger the double tap to self cast (lets say you dont wanna disable double cast self cast option in the settings) in some situations where the player has to mash a button to cast the ability, or else the target blinks out or you wanna shallow grave an ally, but might double click the button and cast on self (lion hex, shaman hex, bane nightmare, wyvern heal, blink button, euls button, these sorts of stuff) you can assign the normal button to whatever, and assign an emergency button of that ability or item to the mouse scroll up/down. you can customize the mouse scroll button to match every heroes critical buttons in the settings.
Nice, I did something similar. I double-bound one of my item slots to both 2 and mouse wheel up, I use it for Euls mainly so I can quick dodge things with it. I've had mixed results with it tbh, I want to try the Alt quickcast method instead. Maybe switch the mouse wheel up to backward cycle unit, matching cycle unit on my mouse wheel down.
Algorithm brought me here today. I agree it's an important topic and there is a lot of good information here. I just thought I would share my unorthodox(?) setup. I'm surprised more people don't do this... ASDF = QWER: This is the main idea. I'm a professional keyboard user, and fingers on the home just makes sense to me. I have noticed a difference in being able to move items around and still cast them correctly, since I can see which item is on which key, and I intuitively know where that key is. No extra conscious thought required. And my hands are slightly more central on the keyboard. My other keys are: G, V for abilities 5 and 6 QWERTY for items Z = TP X = Neutral C = Hold position Everything else is pretty much default I think. Years ago I tried WERT = QWER with the idea to make more keys accessible (central hands), but that turned out to be pretty confusing. Do what feels good to you, right?
I started using quick cast only because I had a mouse problem where my left click doesn't work most of the time. I think the cast range isn't so much of an issue most of the time, but where it's going to be really disadvantageous is using spells like chrono, I mean you'd be able to gauge what the aoe is and land it accurately, but when you really needed to chrono the enemy at the edge or chrono and enemy melee hitting your ally without getting your ally in, the tiny difference in accuracy makes a ton a difference to the fight, and having the aoe indicator before cast is a lot more helpful.
I have only played FPS's. Never heard of the MOBA style before. When I played Dota for the first time, everything was completely new. The most natural way for me to move the camera that I found was WASD.

Funny story, I am a new player, like to play support. I used Dazzle, and I tend to be able to cast on my allies but I usually have a harder time to cast on my own, because I use quick cast xD
As a newer player, I almost never use the Attack and Stop hotkeys (and have literally never used Halt in a match ever). The thing it, I can't really understand what the actual value is of using these keys. Could you please explain why you use them vs simply right-clicking to attack?
Welcome to the game! For Stop, there's a lot of uses like ending a channeling spell or teleport, faking an attack/spell (start the animation but stop it), having yourself stop moving at a specific location/facing a direction, or body blocking. Attack command there are options to not need it, but it helps to avoid misclicks with right clicking and gives you more options. For example, using attack command to last hit means if you miss the creep, you would still launch an attack vs walking towards the creep. Attack commands can also be used for microing illusions/summons around to different parts of the map while attacking anything they see. Another use is making it much easier to attack move to kite vs having to precisely click the exact target every single time. These are some common uses off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more. One example that uses both commands would be last hitting. Many people will issue an attack command on a creep to face it, then use the stop command to not actually attack. Now you are facing the creep while you wait for the last hit timing and you don't have to worry about turn rate time. You might fake an attack at it to trick an enemy into trying to deny to early, which you can then finish the last hit safely.
What would you suggest for me seeing as I only have 2 extra mouse buttons (thumb buttons) as opposed to you who has 4 I like your set up that’s why I’m asking and thinking of switching
Here's what I have bound to my mouse: Left and Right click of course M3 - Camera Grip MWheelUp - Control Group 10 (I use up and down for illusion runes, otherwise rarely used) MWheelDown - Control Group 9 ALT+MWheelUp - Taunt ALT+MWheelDown - Select All Other Units (I never use this lol) M4 - Voice Chat M5 - Select Hero ALT+M5 - Take Stash Items M6 - Purchase Sticky ALT+M6 - Purchase Quickbuy M7 - Get back! ALT+M7 - Open Shop If I only had two buttons, I would probably keep Voice Chat, Select Hero, and Take Stash Items. Since I select my hero so much, I didn't want anything critical bound to the ALT+Hotkey since I might misclick it. If you don't play micro heroes, or don't use 5 control groups, I would just replace a control group hotkey with Open Shop and Purchase Quickbuy. Get back! can be bound to the chat wheel, and Purchase Sticky isn't that essential. Or I might bind them to F1 and F2 (and ALT varieties) since I don't really use those. You could bind mouse wheel to some of those things if you don't want the control groups for just illusions, but since I might accidentally scroll when clicking it in to move my camera, I recommend only putting harmless things on there. Most of the time, I never have an illusion rune, so accidentally scrolling doesn't affect me. If you feel fine with it though, you could put more important things on there

Is there any way to prevent the alt modifier for "smart double tap" stopping you casting abilities that are only self cast if you are holding down your alt key? To clarify what I mean I'm very used to alt-self casting force staff on myself and for example I will play Mirana and hold down alt when I'm trying to leap and it just won't do anything. Kind of a similar story with glimmer cape and ghost scepter. Any ideas?

I do wonder about some of the hero hotkeys you have set now, for example invoker or ember spirit who both have 6 active skill slots which are regularly pressed. I really do like the idea of freeing up D and F for the reasons you mentioned. I came to Dota from HoN and took the Hotkeys with me aka QWER and ALT + qweasd for the items. Recently i made a change to one of my item slots to use space for a quick cast and it made blink dagger feel soooooo much better. I am struggling to find easier universal hotkeys for items tho, but your video gave me some ideas. Back when i played some SC2, i drastically changed my entire hotkey setup and after a period of getting used to them, it was actually way better to play with and became very natural. So to anyone here struggling with changes, keep at it, it will become natural to you eventually!

Which mouse do you use bro? Do you just press the middle "wheel" key as camera grip? Don't you accidentally scroll the wheel sometimes when you want to just move the camera? I stopped using camera grip because of this.
I have a logitech G502 Hero. I thought I would accidentally scroll more, so I put inconsequential things on it. Like taunt, or rarely used control groups. That way, if I accidentally scroll, it either selects my hero again or doesn't matter. But turns out, I don't accidentally scroll too much haha
@@paquibotlouis2002 just habit. QWER like in LOL is easier to use, but also easier to make a mistake. For example, I like Disruptor, but the key travel between the combo ERQ might accidentally hit the W and set free that hero. ER and C, with D has a further key travel and makes way less mistakes. Also I like to use Q for the first & most important item. I mean it is just a habit from DOTA1
@@paquibotlouis2002 aww. sad story if you are Tide or Sandking, that R would hurt :))). Legacy key - stop is S, and teleport was an item not a free one (long time ago), so you would never miss it.
Oh interesting, why don't you want to use the left ALT key? To be honest, it seems a little impractical unless most of your hotkeys are on the right side of the keyboard. What about using an ALT-Modifier instead?
@@ZQuixotix i found a solution already and the alt modifier didn't work at all for my case xD. The change was necessary because of the way I played for instance i used to play with wasd for camera movement and 1234 for skills + rxcvyg for items. Now i changed the camera movement to zghj and this allows me to use more keys and I can reach the alt key better this way. With the old way i would have cramps in my left thumb trying the reach the alt button.
This video is a complete and utter garbage, i immediately lost my next game after setting my hotkeys based on your recommendations. These keybinds are unintuitive and incredibly taxing to use. Had to reset to the default afterwards. Thank you.
52:10 Hold position keeps autoattack on so attack-stop last hitting doesn't work with hold position Hold is fine if you last hit with the mouse and want to use autoattack to immediately auto things in range

Excellent video, I use edge panning but I'll move away from it now because I've died a few times now because I click on the map by accident lol

i have edge pan, wasd and camera grip all enabled and use whatever one i feel like at the time,,,, fear me

@@paquibotlouis2002 just habit. QWER like in LOL is easier to use, but also easier to make a mistake. For example, I like Disruptor, but the key travel between the combo ERQ might accidentally hit the W and set free that hero. ER and C, with D has a further key travel and makes way less mistakes. Also I like to use Q for the first & most important item. I mean it is just a habit from DOTA1

@@paquibotlouis2002 aww. sad story if you are Tide or Sandking, that R would hurt :))). Legacy key - stop is S, and teleport was an item not a free one (long time ago), so you would never miss it.

Hello, I need advice for my alt hotkey. So i want to use the right alt instead of the left one. Help pls :)
Oh interesting, why don't you want to use the left ALT key? To be honest, it seems a little impractical unless most of your hotkeys are on the right side of the keyboard. What about using an ALT-Modifier instead?
@@ZQuixotix i found a solution already and the alt modifier didn't work at all for my case xD. The change was necessary because of the way I played for instance i used to play with wasd for camera movement and 1234 for skills + rxcvyg for items. Now i changed the camera movement to zghj and this allows me to use more keys and I can reach the alt key better this way. With the old way i would have cramps in my left thumb trying the reach the alt button.

This video is a complete and utter garbage, i immediately lost my next game after setting my hotkeys based on your recommendations. These keybinds are unintuitive and incredibly taxing to use. Had to reset to the default afterwards. Thank you.

Hold position keeps autoattack on so attack-stop last hitting doesn't work with hold position
Hold is fine if you last hit with the mouse and want to use autoattack to immediately auto things in range
