Where was this video a year ago Zack?! You could have saved me so many hours. I am now on the edge of Archon...can't wait for the Crusader version. Two things you didn't mention: the game is so much better in Crusader. Way more fun and engaging. It is not just about progressing up the level - it is about getting of of the shit and playing a highly challenging and amazingly complex game and having fun. That doesn't happen almost all of the time in herald. One other observation as I looked back on my own games. My cores are generally not getting more than 50 LHs in the first 10 minutes in Crusader... this isn't just a herald problem. I know you didn't say that it is just a herald problem... but that first objective you listed is just as important in the next two tiers (at least). Finally - there are a ton of 'career' dota players in crusader. I've recently played with an entire team and each player had more than 4000 games of experience. That is stunning to me. Combined 16,000 games of experience. And these are the most frustrating games, because the 'career crusaders' don't seem to still have the will to win. They aren't improving. They don't communicate. They don't take suggestions to itemize vs. the other team. They tend to tilt early. They are just grumpy silent robots. That lose 50% of their games. What do I do about these people!? I know... I need to be 1000 mmr better and win. That is hard to do as a support in crusader... No one has read this far, so I'll stop ranting. Keep up the amazing content!
I’m experiencing this in Herald too 😅 playing against people with thousands of games and just giving up on life/the game and seem like they’re just “not there”-/a robot-that to say, this might be a universal problem, not just a crusader! Sad to hear it’s still happening in Crusader since I was excited to experience the difference 😂
While it's not impossible to climb out playing as support it's much harder. What I did was queue for all roles to boost my role queue games (it always puts you as support), try and win as many games as possible, and then spam 1 role to climb. As long as you aren't losing constantly gaining the role queues, and you can farm as a 1 role, you'll climb out.
I need get out of Guardian. Calibrated Guardian II, now Guardian IV, getting close to Guardian V, 1300ish. I was a former 3.7K MMR player circa 2012-2016. I almost got 4K MMR, but of course, I wasn’t good enough, then.
I feel you. Got stuck in very very low MMR (~200) when I was new to Doat and each an every game was a complete stomp. After I was skilled enough from one day to another I got a 20-30 win streak and now the games are more even. 😀
I got recalibrated from herald 4 to guardian 4. Im just happy I get to play with people who aren't complete beginner. Games are a little bit less frustrating.
Same. I'm sure higher ranked guys think it's hilarious to say this, but I think *a lot* of Guardian players are really good. Probably steps to get out of Guardian are Roshan, BKB. One of those you can do on your own, but convincing the guardian team to get Rosh instead of highground after T2 is tough. Speaking for myself I tend to do really well and then make one very terrible stupid throw that loses the game. Like some very late die back.
I am crusader. Yet I struggle as position 1 to get 50 LH. Sometimes I have a weak support with me like winter wivern and play like something that runs us over like dk/WD, axe/dazzle or the likes. Hard to get any decent amounts of last hits then. And hints for such setups besides incorporating the jungle into the farming plan during laning which I already try to do?
im a herald last week now im a guardian 4 just playing natures prophet and playing a soft support im new in dota btw i love watching ur videos i learn alot but yeah i lose also but i win alot just applying some of ur teachings 😊 just be greedy in herald in farming u win games even using support build 😊
honestly I played the game for maybe 2 days and got out of Herald. Just play Treant Support, take blood grenades, max your q as fast as you can, and just punch people. They will literally just let you punch them to death. This has worked all the way to Archon. Yes I've been hardstuck Archon for about a month now since I'm having to actually learn the game at a higher level than just punching people to death. But if your goal is to climb out of Herald that's all you need to do.
Would you call hoodwink, void spirit, and earthshaker flexible heroes, too? I like those (and jakiro, but you put him on the flexible chart already). I want to use all of them, but idk if just sticking with one hero (being jakiro) and just focusing on learning the game (instead of playing lots of heroes), would be better.
Hard stuck to 1000-1100 MMR. How to get out? Highest I climbed was 1500 (Crusader 5). Was playing 1,3,4,5. Now I'm playing solely 1. Will this guide also apply?
It's still important to work on these things in Guardian (and all ranks really), but I'll be making another guide for Guardian to Crusader next. I'll make a post asking for some match ID's in the near future for that
@@ferdinanddana8069 If you reached once, you can reach again :). Smaller hero pool helps, Zquixotix mentions some solid heroes in this clip. All the best !
Got a ranked HERALD IV after coming back not playing for 3 years in September last year, tho I'm not really good even back then. Watched tutorial videos on YT in different channels but mainly 4, This CHANNEL, BSJ, PaindDota and GameLeap. And ohh boy! It's a whole different world. Applied what "I remembered" from their videos, made it to Guardian 2. But I can't open my account after Steam mandatorily introduced Steam Guard. Got a second account(my old account, which already had 80+ hours of rank game), played with my 3 friends that are higher ranked than me. Crusader, Archon and Legend-Ancient. Played my first rank game as a solo, got lobbied with Archons to Legend 1, ended up in a lose streak🤣. Sometimes it's really good to play with higher ranked friends since you can apply mechanics and techniques easily knowing you'll be carried. But since I still didn't master those new information I learned, I got stomped in my solo queue in ranked games. But I still got Crusader 4😁. Tho, my second account got banned since I lent my account to my friends if they're low-prio(SD). Got a third account, got to play with Archons and Legends in my normal matches, and now I can play with these ranks easily unlike last time, especially with Archons. I still faced guardians and crusaders so I don't know what my current rank is since I'm still 50 hours away from calibration. So if you're still stuck in your rank but you can see that you're already improving, then try recalibrating maybe you'll get a higher rank.
Actually, if you look at the CS of supports on your screenshots, you'll see that it's unusually high compared to cores. So it could just be that either cores die too much during laning, or supports just steal their CS.
I basically only play pubs because I jumped into ranked a year ago after a seven-year hiatus. I am Guardian V but Dotabuff says my pub games are between Crusader III and Archon II. What should I believe is more correct? I still play ranked every once in a while, but it is usually with my Archon/Divine friends so sometimes I get crushed and it hurts my MMR.
I think the other key thing is buying regen, and buying small items. Herald players like to skip regen and small items and then lose the many many early fights that happen. Conversely if you have liek wand tangoes and 2 bands at 5 min they will feed into you.
I need one of these for a sole support picker. I find my carries are the woeful ones while I've perfected the support play. Herald 5 to Archon 1 stuck as I fluctuate between these.
When you play support at low MMR, do not pick a support that doesn’t have good waveclear. The number of games that I have lost when my cores don’t shove lanes and I have to with a support that has a low damage nuke (or no nuke) is a ridiculous number.
A little story time about me, who literally climbed the whole MMR Ladder and my experiences. It's a long text, so if you are impatient and have the attention span of the average tiktok and yt shorts scroller, don't bother! Back in the days when we didn't had those fancy things like Ranks and stuff... there was Party and Solo MMR. And I used to be back then a sub 100 MMR party and sub 500 MMR solo player. Well I was young and stupid, I thought of myself like I am good in this Game. I compared myself to people way above my league and even went sometimes to far, comparing myself with pro players. Over the next couple of years until late 2019 I have been wandering around the 1k - 1.5k MMR Range. When then in 2020 the last Rank reset came around that happened, I was crusader. Actually quite proud of myself, given I was better than most of my friends, but my other friends being in around Legend - Ancient Bracket thought of me as stupid and bad, and insulted me and never wanted to play with me. So then Corona came, everyone was now at home and playing Dota again. People were picking up the Game left and right again, so I also found some more buddies to play with. And on one day I was bored like always and decided to jump in Dota and I got invited into a stack with 4 other people. One of them was obviously my friend, but there was also this one guy on a smurf Account, and I had no clue who he is. And we played together, many many Games together. And I found out later that he was Immortal, actually a quite good Immortal for the time back then too, with around 7k MMR which was like Rank 1500 in Europe back then. And he was bored and wanted to help me relearn the game, so we were queuing Dota together, him playing on a smurf and me on my main. Well the truth is, I got absolutely boosted like crazy... he was just stomping the Game on Pos 3 and I was playing my AA support. But he was also showing me how to play the Game, and indoctrinated his playstyle into me. So at some point with a lot of improvement, something made click and I was playing suddenly much much better. I could even in solo Queue compete if not outplay my enemies most of the time, playing even above my MMR (at that time around 4k), and I kept climbing and climbing through the ranks (still in duo Queue). Then I reached divine and at around Divine 3 or so he told me, that from now on he won't help me anymore and I will have to play solo queue. And so I did... and after losing only very few Games I managed to reach Immortal after just 7 Months. And I was able to hold myself in that bracket. Then I lost motivation and stopped playing, eventually with the big update though with Tormentor, 2 Rosh Pits, Lotuses etc. I came back and climbed again 2k MMR. Now I am at above 7k MMR and still climbing, closing up to 8k in the near future probably, because I am totally shitting with my Visage on everyone in those pubs. What I learned from it, that the best way of learning Dota is actually to play with better people together, that just drag you along. At least for me that worked insanely well... unfortunately with banned smurf accounts and the policy that Valve now has, that way of learning is not possible anymore. So all I can recommend is, is being self reflective and listen to people like ZQuixotix. He is absolutely right with everything he is saying, so ALWAYS be humble and willing to improve, doesn't matter if you are Herald or Immortal!
Im a new player and figuring out what to buy is my biggest struggle. I usually use the ai to pick for me but I find that everyone else is ends up with stronger builds mid to late game while I still have like 2 or 3 things to buy before the last 2 ai recommended things to purchase
First game after watching this video i chose a Magnus, flexible mid lane hero, and got 52/16 at 11 min, vesus a windranger. We won the game, and i feel like this video was the difference maker, because the enemy AM safelane carry totally outfarmed our carry Jugg.
I'm 7k. I did three things to gain mmr. (1) Mute people. (2) Pick heroes like meepo/visage/brew/arc warden/chen. (3) Use chat wheel to communicate frequently even when you have the entire team muted.
I offer coaching through Patreon, you can find info there (link in any video description). My streams on Wednesdays usually include raffles for free replay analysis as well
I think one related to guardian and crusader would help me. I feel like I don't gain mmr right now. I shifted to support because there are an abundance or carry players in Crusader and guardian. but the quality is very stretched so flex picks and synergies would be awesome. I've given up on proper teamwork when I used to play ancient with friends. I was the least experience so I was automatic carry. Also every game turns out to late game. even if we dominated all the lanes. people most of the time dont group up to assert advantage
Unfortunately it feels like as a core at a low level you're constantly competing against your support for last hits sometimes as they start just pushing wave randomly or just wander off and let the enemies push you off lane as you don't have harassment.
I just got out of herald I was 30 MMR last week I’m at 1000mmr now. Learn how to build and last hit and go mid or offlane and if you go off play either abadon or spam bristle bc people down here don’t know how to counter him and do not listen to your team as off fight when you are ready. If you go mid get strong enough that at min 8 roam to gank that is how I got out
I was almost crusader now I’m mid herald and I’m the best player 95% of games. Mmr just doesn’t work the win loss is pure random depending who ur matched with because mmr is not accurate enough for anyone. I played against much higher rank than me mid and won, but can still lose sometimes in herald or guardian. Rank means absolutely nothing.
@@Trqiz I’m a long time denizen of crusader rank, and there is such a wide span of competency here, ranging from highly cooperative players with excellent game sense and reaction speed, to people who obliviously wander about, never say anything and die repeatedly. Also wide spans of toxicity. Sometimes you have teammates so chill you can have a good time even in defeat, and other times you have a Shadowfiend with a Godlike spree dive 4 alone, die for the first time destroy his items and shit talk the support for putting the wards on the other side of the map. And like life being like a box of chocolates, you can’t be sure which sides of this spectrum will be radiant or dire… From what I’ve read, this skill/toxicity discrepancy doesn’t change much at higher tiers, so I’ve learned to embrace crusaderdom.
@@AtillaTheFun1337 well I started in 100mmr and where i am now there is no difference. Stuff like this happens but if just don’t look on the enemy’s or the mmr and just focus on your own mistakes and improve a lot the wins are gonna come along.
I'm a pos 1 player mainly and I went from 1k to 3k just learning to last hit better. I literally haven't changed anything else. (At least consciously). AND I still miss so many free cs in lane and have dumpster games as a result. Pretty sure I can be ancient or something if I can just last hit better.
Tried all of them, Valve's joke and Marketplace things and unfortunately all available options are poorly coded, predictable and unhelpful at least all that you want is something to hit or train at simply "pressing buttons".
Play with a friend who always get way stressed on matchup. Always tell him ignore the meta, just focus on learning two or three hero and work with the basic gameplay awareness. You will win most of the games if you have 5k more gold than the enemy mid, bad matchup or not, meta or not.
Out of herald now. 1) focus on last hits. First 3 mins last hits matter a lot. 2) don't die in lane. 3) calculate opposition damage output and always buy regen. 4) creep aggro. 5) last hit greater than deny than harass. 6) learn to 2v1.
Too funny. I'm literally just about to get to guardian after ~800 hours of play time. Been doing the all hero challenge recently so I probably could have gotten higher earlier, but AHC seems like a *really* good learning experience. I might do it a 2nd time while I'm still relatively low rank...
All hero challenge is real bait you really, really should not do, especially as new player. It is just ruining your experience, because you invest all your time into learning basics like lasthitting, trading etc on the hero and not learning the game. It rully does not help you progress in the game. It even ruins your future games, because somebody will tell "great riki game" and you will be "oh, I know, what he does and how to play it, I won on it in my AHC". But that was 200 games ago and you need to learn again everything. P.S. I have the same issue with 5k games - I feel like there is a great pick (brood I have good winrate on) and I used to play it a ton years ago and basically I am now 500MMR or more lower on her than on my TOP heroes.
It is hilarious for me how people constantly talk about how to get out of Herald bracket but I am ready to pay 1000 $ to have an account that can’t get out of Herald bracket no matter what. For me playing at 500-700 mmr is way more interesting than playing at 1000+ mmr. Now I have 2200+ mmr and I understand that it is probably impossible to lose that much mmr. I used recalibration to derank but after losing only 700 mmr I get them back. I don’t know why but it seems to me that Heralds are way better that people 1000-2000 mmr below. When I play with Immortals and meet other Immortals I see how much better they are. But people at 1000-2000 mmr feed relentlessly, having 3-17 Slark in your team is a normal practice. I don’t know why but it seems to me that Heralds have much more common sense. Probably they stay in their bracket on purpose while people who try but still can’t get out of low mmr (1000-2000) are the true worst players of DotA.
The games are horrible with total random drafts, bad players and I feel like it's impossible to make an impact even I do my job very well. Players lose in 10min with 0 to 9, etc. I'm trying to find a way, but it's really hard. Maybe I start to play mid again.
if you're below 2k you just need to play more games because you're probably not familiar with what heroes and items do. if you have 2,000+ hours and below 2k you should seek help
I need an Archon guide please, the range where people knows the basic stuff but keep making simple mistakes that higher mmr players don't even think/do that anymore
Bro what I wouldn't give to be that Sandking in the third example. Up against 2 melee heroes. Just level Finale at level 1 and automatically win the lane.

@@brandontobias1138 If your opponents are giving up, isn't that good? It's a free win.
6 months ago I was 600 mmr and now I’m 3.5k. I attribute the gain to this channel and gorgc
Another great video!
Great stuff as usual.
Good advice :> Also loved your casting for the SA teams, wish you inject more insanity for it :d
20:45 cracks me up every fucking time "MMMMmmmmMmMmMm, i wouldnt reccomMENd thAAAaAaAt"
Thank you so much 😍😍😍 please keep it on
I am crusader.
This is a great vid. Thanks!!
Love the plug. Im doing my break and part. 😂
honestly I played the game for maybe 2 days and got out of Herald.
New player thanks for the tips!
great video and illustrations
A great video. Thanks!
Would you call hoodwink, void spirit, and earthshaker flexible heroes, too? I like those (and jakiro, but you put him on the flexible chart already). I want to use all of them, but idk if just sticking with one hero (being jakiro) and just focusing on learning the game (instead of playing lots of heroes), would be better.
commenting and liking because i heard it improves mmr
Scientifically proven yes yes
Hahahaha loved this one. I'm not herald, but I bet I can improve thanks to this
Hard stuck to 1000-1100 MMR.
I'll make a post asking for some match ID's in the near future for that
As a former 100 MMR player who currently plays high Crusader at 2k would love more such videos.
bro i almost got into crusader but i dropped to herald again
@@ferdinanddana8069 If you reached once, you can reach again :). Smaller hero pool helps, Zquixotix mentions some solid heroes in this clip. All the best !
I only play ability draft yet I always think these videos are fun to watch.
Okay I need some help, I tend to get harassed by ranged heroes in mid. Ik picking accordingly matters but if you don’t know how do you overcome this?
Is shadowfiend a flexible hero? I want to try and play sf because he looks cool
Actually, if you look at the CS of supports on your screenshots, you'll see that it's unusually high compared to cores. So it could just be that either cores die too much during laning, or supports just steal their CS.
Still coming back to this vid if I need to gain back my role queue tokens
Something when I came back it war hard to find the heroes to make my custom pick or chart. maybe adding their names would help new players.
Hey Zack, long time YT frog here. Your face cam appears a bit blurry this video. Have you changed anything?
love this content sir! Please do how to get out of legend rank... for pos 5 players 😭
When you play support at low MMR, do not pick a support that doesn’t have good waveclear. The number of games that I have lost when my cores don’t shove lanes and I have to with a support that has a low damage nuke (or no nuke) is a ridiculous number.
now as a support?

Great video
First game after watching this video i chose a Magnus, flexible mid lane hero, and got 52/16 at 11 min, vesus a windranger. We won the game, and i feel like this video was the difference maker, because the enemy AM safelane carry totally outfarmed our carry Jugg.
I'm 7k. I did three things to gain mmr. (1) Mute people. (2) Pick heroes like meepo/visage/brew/arc warden/chen. (3) Use chat wheel to communicate frequently even when you have the entire team muted.
Why those heroes?
@@brandontobias1138 hard carry, hard carry, off, hard carry, pusher
How do we order a coaching and how much is that service? 🙈
Idk about that tho
@@Trqiz I’m a long time denizen of crusader rank, and there is such a wide span of competency here, ranging from highly cooperative players with excellent game sense and reaction speed, to people who obliviously wander about, never say anything and die repeatedly. Also wide spans of toxicity. Sometimes you have teammates so chill you can have a good time even in defeat, and other times you have a Shadowfiend with a Godlike spree dive 4 alone, die for the first time destroy his items and shit talk the support for putting the wards on the other side of the map.
And like life being like a box of chocolates, you can’t be sure which sides of this spectrum will be radiant or dire…
From what I’ve read, this skill/toxicity discrepancy doesn’t change much at higher tiers, so I’ve learned to embrace crusaderdom.
@@AtillaTheFun1337 well I started in 100mmr and where i am now there is no difference. Stuff like this happens but if just don’t look on the enemy’s or the mmr and just focus on your own mistakes and improve a lot the wins are gonna come along.
Appreciate you!
32:01 🤣
Make this a series for sure
Bots: I think Ranked Matchmaking AI is better than the default bots
Tried all of them, Valve's joke and Marketplace things and unfortunately all available options are poorly coded, predictable and unhelpful at least all that you want is something to hit or train at simply "pressing buttons".
Play with a friend who always get way stressed on matchup. Always tell him ignore the meta, just focus on learning two or three hero and work with the basic gameplay awareness. You will win most of the games if you have 5k more gold than the enemy mid, bad matchup or not, meta or not.
Actually ancient 1 like me like to train in guardian/crusader bracket
I need this kind of bracket to train new hero i rarely pick
i play support , my cores just push lanes all the way up to tower. auto hit all the creeps.
Out of herald now.
1) focus on last hits. First 3 mins last hits matter a lot.
2) don't die in lane.
3) calculate opposition damage output and always buy regen.
4) creep aggro.
5) last hit greater than deny than harass.
6) learn to 2v1.
i got a rampage with oracle, i think it's a great lategame/highscaling support
It's 770 mmr to get to guardian, how about the next two levels? how much mmr is needed?
I have archon 1 on 2.3k mmr
P.S. I have the same issue with 5k games - I feel like there is a great pick (brood I have good winrate on) and I used to play it a ton years ago and basically I am now 500MMR or more lower on her than on my TOP heroes.
late guardian felt like that early herald cuz since getting into archon games have felt so much nicer
This sounds to me like you realized you enjoy pubstomping, and instead of admitting it you decided to rationalize it.
As an almost immortal i felt like i have to watch this
The games are horrible with total random drafts, bad players and I feel like it's impossible to make an impact even I do my job very well. Players lose in 10min with 0 to 9, etc. I'm trying to find a way, but it's really hard. Maybe I start to play mid again.
I've got 3 times into guardian.
Directly after I do streaks of 25 losses.
Now I'm 100mmr from guardian hope this time it's permanent
if you're below 2k you just need to play more games because you're probably not familiar with what heroes and items do. if you have 2,000+ hours and below 2k you should seek help
I need an Archon guide please, the range where people knows the basic stuff but keep making simple mistakes that higher mmr players don't even think/do that anymore
Where to post dotabuff link?
Here in the comments is fine!
I want to see teacher roast or compliment my herald support play haha 😁

Get orchid or shadow blade and start your killing spree
Bro what I wouldn't give to be that Sandking in the third example. Up against 2 melee heroes. Just level Finale at level 1 and automatically win the lane.
