- PART 1 | April 1998 - Aloha Airlines Flight 243 takes off from Maui for a short island-hop to Honolulu. The Boeing 737 takes off under clear weather conditions but when the plane reaches its cruising altitude of 24,000 feet, the pilots hear a loud bang. A huge chunk of the plane's roof and walls is missing! One of the flight attendants gets sucked out of the plane and the pilots struggle to control the plane that is in danger of breaking into two. There is a risk that the passengers will begin to suffer from oxygen starvation and potentially die. Miraculously, the plane lands safely and all survive.

What's funny about Mayday?
This is a crazy comment given the context of this video. This is obviously a bot comment but yikes. This wasn't thought about at all.
In loving memory of Clarabelle Lansing chief flight attendant Aloha 243 who perished off the Pacific shores April 28 1988.
❤️
@Big Boy Floyd the flight attendant deserved to die because of poor maintenance?
I remember this when it happened bit not any details. So you're saying the Sr. Flight Attendant was sucked out of the plane. If she and anyone else dies that way...that's just a terrible way to go.
@@kriskros38 she perished off the Pacific shores in 1988.
Sheku 😔❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's a bad situation when the aircraft you're flying in suddenly becomes a convertible but it's even worse when the attenndant is crawling down the isle asking passengers if they know how to fly an airplane.
They could always say "I dont know but I can try"
Ikr crazy🥴
Let's make it a dababy converterbile
The thing I don't get is that passenger who says he had some pilot training, why didn't he offer himself?
@@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor the plane was bent so he couldn’t get to the cockpit. The wind coupled by the intense force of gravity makes it impossible if you want to help your neighbor.
This one was one of many miracles and May the flight attendant that got sucked out rest in peace ❤
Was the part about the flight attendant being sucked out in this video?
@@JustMe-px9qy yes due to the sudden roof being ripped off or I could be wrong but they did mention her
@@Asphyxiation12352 she was mentioned on another video on this.
@@single55 oh sorry for the confusion then ❤
@@single55 - they should have made that clear
The flight attendant who was trying to salvage the situation on her own, thinking she might be the only member of the crew left, was incredibly heroic. It would have been so easy to give up at that point but she did absolutely everything she could think of.
Including putting herself at risk to hold onto the injured flight attendant as they landed.
Thats why flight crews rarelly "die" in panic ... they usually die very busy trying to solve the next problem
Brave
صحيح
every moment she was not seated and buckled was extreme risk to her. but she kept at it to maintain life saving instructions for the passengers.
"This is your captain speaking. We will be opening the plane's ventilation system to maximum."
What a terrible preventable accident. A wonderful job by the crew. Rest in peace Clarabelle. My condolences to all of her loved ones
I remember watching “miracle landing” on lifetime back in the 90s when I was a kid. Always respected the crew of 243! God bless them all!
Yes! That's where I saw it when I was a kid 😂
My wife and I and two friends had just gotten off of this flight in
Hilo. We boarded the flight in Honolulu and as we were getting settled
in our seats, I opened the overhead bin to place a piece of luggage
there. I noticed that the fabric lining the bin was really torn and
coming loose. I commented to my wife that it seemed the inside of the
aircraft had not been well maintained. Upon landing at Hilo, we rented a
car to drive over to Kona. I was doing the driving and on the way I had
the worst headache I have ever experienced in my life. Something to do
with the aircraft and pressure? Have no idea. We knew nothing about the
return trip and the top coming off of the plane until we got to our
hotel room and turned on the television. We remembered the flight
attendant that was sucked out of the plane and lost. We were one flight
cycle away from disaster. Kinda spooky watching these videos.
I really enjoyed this episode. That fact that this plane even made it totally he airport to me is a MIRACLE
Amen!!!
Damn good pilots too.
PRAISE GOD FOR THE MIRACLE. HIS HAND WAS EXTENDED. ALL WHO SURVIVED, GOD HAS GIVEN YOU MORE TIME.
I lived in Hawaii at the time, and we use to fly Aloha to the other islands. Their planes were junk, and we all use to joke they were held together with duct tape. When this happened, the only surprising thing was that the whole plane wasn't lost.
They were also lucky that it didn’t occur at the bottom of the plane.
Sounds like you were more right than you knew!
A long time ago I knew a man that worked for Northwestern. He said they used to joke about duct tape holding the wings on the planes. I have never flown on a NW airplane. My daughter booked us flights to SouthAmerica and I asked what plane? She said Airbus 320. I wanted some duct tape!
@@bjbrown what about Airbus A320?
@@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor I have flown on the Airbus 320. I have since read that it has a good safety record. I would rather fly something else but it’s not a problem because I am done traveling.

They said the first officer was waiting to be promoted to Captain. Well after this flight I hope she got promoted she definitely deserves to be a Captain. I just hope the horror of this incident didn't cause her to quit flying. Excellent work by both pilot's.
Aviation Nut Mi Mi Tompkins did get promoted to captain! She became the first female captain of Aloha Airlines! The 243 situation actually proved her skills and her ability to handle even the most dangerous situations!
@@erikdykeman7243 Oh wow that's amazing. She's stronger than me. I think I would've just stayed on land for the rest of my life after that. 😂😂
@erikdykeman7243 good to hear 😊
@@BloodNoteme too 😮
This is probably the best acted, edited, and written Maday episode I've ever seen
This is without a doubt one of the most unbelievable feats of airmanship in the history of flight. I'm totally awestruck by that amazing crew CB included, I hope their extremely distinguished service didn't go unnoticed. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.
It's interesting that this episode didn't go into the reasons for the accident. I listened to a podcast about this flight and remember it being something about the plane being used for many short flights.
And over salty ocean air.
Pilot & co-pilot are heroes! Miracle
A local attorney I worked for represented several passengers. I will never forget he had a large photo of the crippled jet after it had pulled in. A lady’s leg was severely lacerated and bloody, but the wound closed a up and sealed due to the cold air around the plane as it was flying.
Wait WHAT the cold sealed her leg?! That is crazy. The cold might have actually saved her from bleeding out.
For reference, the strongest winds ever observed on earth were that of an ef5 tornado, 1999 in Oklahoma. Just above 300 mph. So imagine being in the middle that tornado except the wind is -50 degrees . It’s amazing anyone survived that. Luckily, most of the debris was sucked out in the decompression, otherwise they would have certainly all been ripped to shreds as debris is the most dangerous factor in a tornado. Rip to CB
Michelle Honda is a boss. Surrounded by panic and chaos, unable to stand due to the wind and turbulence, worried about an injured colleague, she still did her job and crawled up the aisle to tell each passenger to brace for landing. Then crawled back to her injured colleague to shield her from further injury during the landing.
Staff are so quick to respond in emergency, very competent
Good work for both pilots and flight attendants I can't imagine being in such amoment.
Love this narrator. Jonathon Aris. He has such a pleasant voice to listen to,,I thought this was Air Crash investigations,, but I’m not complaining,
Oh yeah. I just wish he would narrate Forensic Files ll.
This vid only highlights the problems. One engine failed due to debris ingestion and the control surfaces were badly damaged. That this wreck of an airplane could still fly is a credit to the hero pilots and a well-engineered plane that was pushed way past it's design limits.
Small airport but admirable; the professionalism and quick action.
This was a 737C..The "C" stood for "convertible".
I hate myself for laughing at this.
@@Scratchingforcash Ironically there is a 737C .. C stands for Combi.. they are used in Alaska and similar places and its half passanger half freighter cabin configuration
just watching this really scares me, wow. This is truly a miracle. I hope all those involved are doing well, RIP to the veteran hostess who passed on.
Funny, but very true story: this the first episode of Mayday I have ever watched in my life, and I was watching this when I was around 7-8 years old on a return flight from Vancouver to Toronto on a WestJet Boeing 737 with their onboard satellite TV systems at the time. Since this was the only thing on the TV that wasn’t boring FOX News or CNN, I decided to settle with this. My sister who was around 5 years old also decided to change her television screen to that channel as well. My mother was absolutely horrified after seeing what we were watching, and pleaded for us to switch it off… But neither of us did since the rest of the channels would bore us to death. Had I only known at that young that we were flying on a similar aircraft, I probably never would’ve flown again. But instead, I look back on that moment as the beginning of my fascination with both aviation as a whole and this show documenting the lessons we learned from the rare mistakes and accidents that do occur. Too bad it had the opposite affect on my sister ultimately! 😂
I remember seeing this on the news too. It was quite astounding how the Captain and Co Captain managed to land that plane. Really sad loss of CB she sounded like a real Gem.
After years I found this episode again, THANK YOU
This is a great display of what can happen if people are too afraid to speak up.
Great Pilots and Crew!
TY for the episode! This is a good one
Clara Belle, stewardess with 38 years on the job was sucked out of the aircraft.
Absolutely miraculous feat of fortitude!!! Just, wow!! I'm so sorry they were all grounded due to the injuries they sustained!
Those pilots are just the best
This is the time that applause is warranted on successful landing
I award both pilot and co pilot the best golden award 2021
Thank you
wow I love u r episodes plzzzzzz upload full videosssssssss I am waiting daily
I salute you pilot, you are blessed.
Who else thinks that people should make a movie out of this like the Sully movie?
PS : my mom actually saw the plane, after landing at the same airport,
They did years ago! It’s called miracle landing!
there was a movie made
Yes they switched name of the airline from Alaho to paradise valley sad thing is they never said any thing more about CB . May she rest in paradise

"This accident changed aviation history." No, this accident changed the aviation industry.
Nothing changed....Boeing had faced innumerable accidents so far....yet they defamed Concorde ..that is corporate rivalry..
Very calm amazing pilots
Well articulated
Respect them 🥰
Something similar to this happened on a United flight between Honolulu and Sydney! A part of a 747 tore off shortly after take off from Honolulu! One passenger was sucked out! It returned safely to Honolulu, but the aircraft was partially damaged at caused more liveo to be lost!
United 811? There were nine fatalities.
@@arianebolt1575 I'm sure that was it!
What a miracle.
Thanks to pilots and all attendant's also aircraft controller and all fire crew
I love this channel👌😊
Patricia Aubrey (the re-enactment actress)...god dayum! 🔥
I saw a reinvestigation on this flight to find out what happened to CB and they found out what happened with CB they saw on pictures of plane blood stains on side they think she was ripped apart hate to say it like this but she ended up like a bug on windshield (NOT MENT AS A DISRSPECTFUL COMMENT JUST SO PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO VISUALIZE IT) so she probably did not even know what happened to herself so she felt no pain at all just helping people to drinks and then darkness
I understand your trying to be helpful. Hopefully she died quickly w/o suffering. I saw another video on mayday where the door on a jet blew open and a young man was sucked out. He wss strapped to his seat and probably was alive for few minutes falling down into the ocean.
awesome program as usual 😊
Brave great pilot
This has got to be the most miracle landing ever!
And i thought my car ac stopped working was a tragedy
I've flown this route before as a resident of Hawai'i. Heard about this, of course, but hadn't watched this before. This documentary had me screaming at the screen. Couldn't believe the control tower dude was repeating for confirmation of the need for an ambulance. Let's see...lost air pressure at a high altitude, confirmed that part of the plane is missing, pilots declaring an emergency, no way for pilots to communicate with the cabin crew, maybe no nose gear...sounds like a problem to me! Just bring the ambulance dammit!
Thank God the passengers still had their seatbelts on 🥺
I cannot imagine what those poor people went through! What a horrible tragedy 😢
Oh man this one was intense. So scary.
this whole video is scary
Iconic.
Omg you guys are the best 👍👍👍👍
Good luck. Great job.

When I was a kid, we were on the same flight and had trouble with the landing gear. The crew and my dad were crying. I was ten and traumatized for life.
It wasn't until I was 54 years old that I took my first airplane ride traveling with some friends. I was raised with a mother who was fearful of planes and basically she instilled that fear in her kids. She was afraid of these type of scenarios. So these close friends of mine were able to talk me into taking a trip with them. In my very first trip, we went through thunderstorms and had a lot of turbulence. Thankfully I was totally clueless what it was supposed to feel like to fly let alone what turbulence felt like. I didn't get scared until we had so much turbulence as we were getting ready to land. My friends never let on that they were even a bit concerned and reassured me that things were fine. We had a hard landing. I still felt a bit shaken, but still had to take a flight back home days later. On that trip it was a beautiful flight and throughly enjoyed myself. I had finally overcome my fear of flying. If I had experienced this flight for the first time, i would have been so terrified that I wouldn't have stepped on a plane ever again. So I can understand why you would never step on a plane ever again. Condolences to the families who lost the Chief Attendant on this flight. Condolences to the crew who also suffered the loss as well.
Do you still fly?
thanks to the fire workers I really appreciate you guys even when cooking the move ... immediately
Omg im teary
that ending made me (the viewer) smile!
That Hawaiian lady is so pretty 😍
This is much more better than Smithsonian
Bravo aux pilotes magnifiques de cœur 😍 ❤️ 😍 ❤️ 😍 ❤️ 😍

Thank God they make it safe to the ground don't matter how bad the situation was God bring them home safe the plot is a great heroes
God Is the real pilot
If I was the passenger at the front I would be screaming my head off
The ability to believe they had s chance.. fantastic crew..
Aloha....where's my hula hoop. 🛩💥
If that female passenger saw something wrong….Why didn’t she tell them?
These days, she probably would. People are a little more active in their own safety on an airplane.
Amazing episode. Is this a repost? I think I’ve seen it before. I’m subscribed to Wonder, PBS, Mayday, so I might’ve seen it on a different channel.
Where is pt 2! I refuse to watch this one until it comes out
They made a movie regarding this accident It was called Miracle Landing It was based on this true accident
I wonder how anyone would want to go back on another plane to continue their trip?!!!
I remember when this made the news.
I just had a thought: imagine if all this happened in the middle of a thunderstorm. That would seriously suck.
The pilot’s did a great job in a terrible situation
I feel so bad for cLara belle lansing
After watching all these Mayday disasters I have great respect for pilots and crew. However, I have no intention of ever flying again!
First flying convertible...
I remember that a movie was based on this called "Miracle Landing".
I was crying while watching the whole video
"The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli."

Landing on board. It landed upon itself.
I mean I would love to be the person to say "technically, yeah I can fly! But I only have simulator experience" in that situation it's either we're die or we die trying

Horrific 😱!! No foam on runway for them? God bless them all 👏🏼👏🏼to the pilots 😔🙏❤️
Its not done anymore because it was proven to be laregelly irrelevant for belly landings ... so it wouldnt had helped them much anyway
