Saw one at a lokal dealership couple of weeks ago. Not a fan of the design but surprisingly it looked absolutely acceptable in real life (not the msport trim with the black triangles up front). Was blown away by the space in the backseat (coming from a 5-series touring). Was equally appalled by the lack of boot-space (I drive far with the family + luggage). Finally the dealer told me that delivery times are close to one year in the future for the “long range” version. Conclusion: something altogether smarter and more advanced might be available in 1 - 2 years time.
Tried the -40 version and it was fantastic - can’t say I agree with the video concerning the ”driving and control”-part - can’t recognise that at all. But what do I know - only drove it in snow and darkness for about 80km. Ordered the -50version since I need the range. In the -50-version you also get the ”all-wheel-steer” which will improve the control even more. Only ”one” bad thing - won’t get the car until Q1-2023…
For the price tag, range is a let down. For me it's the EV6 for £53k anyday. # Edit: Range is from a few generations of EV cars ago. But to be fair whatcar only drove for 20 miles, so battery percentages may not always be proportional. Still, even just above 200 miles range is still pretty bad for this luxury car.
To me if I have the money and I want to go fully electric … I will get this. It looks different, it feels different, everything is different from every regular car you have today. And for me I look at cars like toys. As long as is reliable and exciting then it 😻. This time the did a lot of home work in the interior. They didn’t give us the old traditional boring interior. Good work BMW
An absolutely stunning car, it was an easy decision to change from my X5 to an iX after a test drive. It handled as well as the X5 even without air suspension and on 22” wheels. The idrive is even better and incredibly quick, the navigation is amazing with AR guidance. Can’t wait to get the car in September
@@jp_82 I have the 40 Sport Edition and it’s incredible although it probably took a couple of weeks to get the best out of it. I’m getting very close to the claimed range - 3.2 to 3.3 miles / kWh after 1000 miles. It’s stunning to drive in any of the modes and Sport makes the car very rapid and tight. The interior is amazing and very spacious. The only niggle is working out the quickest way to get through IDrive to what you need but that’s just experience.
I saw the iX at BMW Park lane. In the metal, this car looks much better than in pictures or videos. The interior is simply stunning and the touch and feel of the materials spell super luxury. Truly an impressively well thought out package. Not surprised it's been an instant sales hit
What do I think… Buy an MG5 instead and use the £40-60k saved to go travelling, purchase home improvement, get out of debt, etc. etc. Nobody needs a vehicle that large and expensive on UK roads.
I wish ‘journalists’ would stop sucking up to manufacturers and call out awful cars when they review them, I don’t care if it’s pleasant to drive. A 2.5 tonne car with only 500l of boot space is unacceptable. BMW should be forced to pay subsidies on every one it sells, as reparation for the waste of Earth’s resources it takes to produce.
No Doug it's not suitable for driving around town and the school run. It's the size of a block of flats. It's a long journey car, oh oops...177 mile range
I think one of the things missed in this review and others of similar cars is the sheer size of the vehicle. It is tank-like in styling and size and although you comment that the light steering will be useful around town; if it is bigger than the X5 then "around town" is going to be a problem. Also, who would be able to see a 4, 5 or 6 year old over the bonnet if they happened to walk in front of a parked iX when collecting or dropping off the kids at school!
Why are all car manufacturers ditching physical buttons for touch buttons or moving the functionality to the UI ? Does this save so much money because there are less parts to assemble?
I saw one on the road very recently; I thought I might like it in the flesh but no. It’s ballsy design from BMW but I don’t think it translates to desirability. Good review, What Car team!
The only Negative review I have seem on this car. Always drive the cars yourself. Did a test drive of the iX40 and it’s even more comfortable that my previous 2021 Mercedes S Class. Extremely smooth and comfortable to drive. It’s so comfortable without air suspension that BMW have now removed air suspension from the more expensive iX50
I like and own two BMW’s, but still wouldn’t buy this one for numerous reasons including UK public charging is no where near good enough yet, its going to take years before its at an acceptable level. Also for god sake BMW put proper buttons on the dashboard for basic functions like climate control etc (you’ve got them in back), touch screens are far too complicated and dangerous.
Tech overload for basic functions, again. What about older drivers who may not feel that comfortable with all this tech ? Also, the styling is a disaster, AGAIN
How many miles does a 2.5+ tonne EV with 523 HP get out of a set of tyres, and how much more damage are they doing to our roads than current 'ordinary' cars that weigh far less?.........Just asking for a 'green' friend!
Thank you for your review, on the xDrive40 model. I am interested how big of a difference in handling does this make on this car, given the lack of the air suspension. I was disappointed to see this may be quite a large gap, and eager to find if this is a deal breaker! I'll follow up with a test drive with the BMW agent. Also disappointed that BMW includes a battery capacity smaller than the iX3 with the xDrive40! should have been 10KWh bigger on the entry level!
I appreciate that its a technolgy thing these days but having to pay more for a bigger fuel tank and also how much fuel it can take at a time is ludicrous. These 2 things alone should be set to max by default on any car. 👎
Hardly surprising it’s ‘roomy’ when it’s the size of a small apartment and the enormous unusable bonnet is unacceptable on a bespoke ev platform; at the price it should be ‘wow’ everywhere - but it ain’t.
Its impossible to trust reviews nowadays. Someone says the bmw ix handles exeptionally good for a suv and also says its a better drive than the etron which i can believe since that is bmw’s specialty have been for ages. And now this guy comes and claims the total opposite.. now i dont know what to believe so these tevies are worthless we all are gonna have to testdrive ourselves these reviewers these days dont know anything it seems.
Not had a chance to watch yet but it's What Car reviewing a German car so you can take a guess that it's a glowing review no matter what. Stick an Asian badge on it and possibly not.
If the real-world range was befitting of a vehicle of such a high price, I could get past the looks (not that I could afford to anyway lol). *Alas, the range is terrible (especially considering the price)!* 177miles is Gen 1 Nissan Leaf territory! Surely a potential customer would prefer a hybrid X5 at that price (which could reduce pollution and running costs on shorter journeys and would be lighter) The Model X is also extremely expensive - and has worse build quality - but the range on _that_ is pretty good in almost all conditions.
I don’t like the overall design exterior or interior likewise. It doesn’t convey the dynamism associated to a BMW. Well, the test confirms that the best use case for the 40 model is school run commute. That’s groundbreaking!
Nice to look at but disappointing from BMW. The only thing I find irritating with EV is the pricing. I know it’s new ish ground but for someone who isn’t a high earner would find it difficult to buy a decent spec EV.
Indeed, although take note what model was reviewed, most early reviews are based on the xDrive50 which has the air suspension. However I've seen reviews on the xDrive40 which did not find any huge issues with the ride quality.
Iam no worry to much to the tech meanwhile drive I can use the voice active system ,so I dont know why all the reviewer insist on the distraction in this kind of car.
It has way more than 300km, the advertised range is 630 km WLTP and the WLTP range is almost always around 20% more than the real range. Assuming that is also true for the iX, it will have slightly more than 500km as its real world range. Still not a lot for that price tag but nevertheless more than 300km
It seems a very expensive way of not going very far. I really don't get cars like this. EVs are supposed to be a move to a more sustainable, greener way of motoring and getting about. I cant see that ever happening with overweight monsters like this lumbering about and clogging up the roads. It just seems odd to me that a company that made its name by producing good looking cars with great dynamics like the iconic CSL - a car that actually had 'Lightweight' in its name - can produce something so overweight, off the pace and inefficient. This just looks like a dinosaur to me and a particularly ugly one at that.
I seriously believe the executives at BMW only see the side view of these cars. Let’s face it the new Grills look like a buck tooth Beaver…..I’m sorry, no disrespect to the little geniuses ….the Beavers. I have a rusted anvil in my Garage….every time i get annoyed i want to drop my hammer on someone’s big toe on my anvil…..the guy who designed the new grill better not go near my Garage!
I would expect a car costing from 70,000 to 115,000 to have an exceptional interior for that money. How would you keep the car at room temperature to repair the grill. Keep it in you front room over night? What a ridiculous statement. If someone can afford this as a second car then they must have more money than sense. How long does it take to charge with the different options. It is becoming a channel called “What Electric Car” should you buy, if anyone can afford one in the first place. Electricians are making a packet installing garage wall boxes. The mark up of what they charge is a rip off. When “Joe” average earning £20,000 P/A here in Devon can buy a sensibly priced EV, not £30,000 plus starting price & have the infrastructure to charge the thing that doesn’t take hours then you might talk sense. Until that day EV’s will be a rare sight on Devon’s roads.
We got the brand new BMW iX during Christmas time 2021. It is our 4th BMW and we were excited to ride on it. On January 10 2022, the iX made its freeway debut. We would never have thought the first drive would have been a nightmare. My husband drove the iX fine until that moment- about 20 minutes on the freeway. A loud “Bang!” struck us frozen. At that moment, the bonnet hood smashed the front glass! My husband on the driver’s seat, and I next to him, found ourselves being entirely blindfolded by the bonnet hood and were entirely unable to see the traffic. It was a moment of fear, fear of losing our lives.
I did had plans to get one went to see ix in person I did like the exterior, but interior is deal breaker for me allot of cheap plastic down low and centre console is half why you will want that useful space wasted there ?also is build with cheap plastic definitely don’t give the impression that I’m paying 80k those days manicures getting pages from Tesla book charge more for less all useful buttons gone let you fiddle with menu in order to get simple functions that should be illegal to build over all not my car I went bought GLE not prefect either, but at least was cheaper and give you a feeling that you get what you pay for.
Cadillac Lyriq or even the Mustang Mach E seems to be a better value for the money, this one looks cheap and should have been priced around $40k. I have seen Chinese SUVs from Changan with better design, materials and tech for half the price.
