  • It's been about 4 months since the first gameplay was shown for Sonic Frontiers, and it seems that since then the public opinion of it has turned around to be more positive! So give all the new gameplay we've seen since I figured I'd give my updated thoughts on it before the release on November 8th!

I think the fact that Japanese gamers are excited for this game really says a lot. Literally, the queue never died down at Tokyo Game Show. I got in on opening on the Sunday and the queue already took 2 and a half hours, and that's with them repeatedly closing it off to limit people. There were big queues at the in-store demos at Yodobashi Camera etc. And a lot of people definitely weren't pre-existing Sonic fans. They're actually like... advertising the game too! There's an advert running in at least one of the major convenience stores at the moment - can't speak for the others because I'm a Family Mart Truther. I'm hyped for the potential of him having a domestic revival, because before now if I wanted to see Sonic-related stuff, I basically had to go to Joypolis.

I know the concern about the game being too easy with how you can just cyloop a bunch of rings in order to stay alive, but I feel like this is a good design because of the incentive behind the combo system. It's been shown that the only way you can gain access to Sonic's special abilities is to make sure you don't drop your combos at all while attacking enemies. If you take a hit, you'll drop your combo and you'll be forced to start again. A quick ring pick-me-up will allow you to get back in the fight without having to run away and look for other rings in an open world environment. You CAN of course just ignore the cyloop and attempt to fight the enemies again without the rings and risk taking another hit as you work your way through the combos again, but the option is there for new players.
The incentive overall is to make sure NOT to make a mistake if you want to access Sonic's better moves, so it works out well in the end. It's kind of like Devil May Cry's style meter, where you can keep combo-ing enemies to get the rank to go up, and if you get hit, your ranking goes down. You are then free to either go into Devil Trigger mode to heal or use an item to heal back up, but by and large, you still need to work hard towards combo-ing again to get the style meter back up to where you need it to be.

  • @Samevi

I think the main reason people go all over the place in Cyberspace during the demos is because Sonic doesn't feel like a racecar anymore. He turns more sharply, which is something I'm down for. I just wish the stage design were, I dunno, wider. Like in Unleashed, or the Adventure games. Those'd take better advantage of Sonic's extra mobility.

They could have remixed assets and repaint Green Hill to another color (I will always praise Forces for this), they could have mixed Chemical Plant with Metropolis to make a different factory, they could have landed Sky Sanctuary and give plot relevant reason that's by the same civilization. Sega has rich asset library which they could have remixed instead of just having us pay for the same levels (but downgraded) again.

The thing I like the most about Sonic Frontiers, is that it's finally doing what I've been wanting the franchise to do for a long time.
    Change the formula
    Change the game
    Try something different
And making it official in the main Sonic games.
Looking back at the fan games, it was always nice seeing what the community could do when it came down to Sonic and change how he operates within formula, but even the fan games weren't able to make official, what could only be made official by Sonic team themselves, nor scratch that itch of change, that I've been wanting to see Sega do with Sonic for a long time.
Not that I'm saying fan games suck, of course not, I'm only saying that they could, only do what I always wanted to see Sega do with Sonic and co, but the limitations imo was, them being non canon and unofficial.
With Sonic Frontiers, things can change and are looking to change for the better, I hope this will the new formula from here on out.

Here's the thing: I'm not going to "accept that I'm okay with mediocrity" because that's not what I'm doing. I'm waiting to see how cyberspace works in conjunction with the rest of the game upon release instead of taking literally everything I hear about the game at face value. I understand being frustrated with the principle of having nostalgia shoved in your face over and over again, but instead of shitting my pants over it I'm actively waiting to see if they actually do something cool with the idea. If they don't, and it's legit just Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary and the highway level, and nothing else, then yeah that'd be pretty lame. A good example of them taking this concept and doing something cool with it is them recreating Final Chase from SA2 using the assets from the Generations Shadow boss fight. Realistically I don't think they'll go that far, but another thing I'm excited for in regards to cyberspace is the story implications behind it. Story's a big focus for this game in particular so I'm looking forward to seeing why it's Sonic's memories specifically being used to create the Island's digital landscapes. As it is, the rest of this game gives me reason to be excited and I have no reason to just assume that cyberspace will sour the experience for me.

3:11 maybe because its optional content and doesn't take up too much of the game also there are original level themes and layouts in the game (it doesn't really excuse the recycled level design but hey maybe if sonic team sees that cyberspace is the weakest part of the game they will probably remove it in the next game)

Like imagine in a sequel to frontiers we can FINALLY play as tails, knuckles and Amy again? Give each of the completely unique skill trees, include more unique worlds to explore like an eggman city, level themes not done before, and create a standard for all fronts. Better story telling, gameplay structure, identity, just use frontiers’ success to build sonic like we’ve all been wanting

Not to be overly negative but, what actually looks good about Sonic Frontiers? The game can be split into 3 aspects.
    Exploration, combat and cyberspace.
It doesn't look to excel in any of these things. The combat is incredibly simple and button mashy from what we've seen upto the third island. The cyberspace levels consists of 4 level themes and is just reusing old layouts. And the exploration, whilst probably the most interesting aspect. It's mostly just disjointed floating platforms and rails plastered on a big open map with little natural integration and looks like it lacks much variety in challenges.
Like, I hope the game is good. And I understand people enjoy the anticipation and the hype of a new release. But, I'm genuinely not seeing anything in this game which could elevate it above average.

I like the idea of Cyberspace as a change of pace from the open world as this game's equivalent to botw shrines but...could they really not have made linear stages that were actually designed around Sonic's new movement here? I'll probably enjoy them more than Forces levels because there will actually be more to do in the moment to moment gameplay where Forces just played itself like half the time...but that's the LOWEST bar to clear. This is just annoying.

@@Gnidel Yeah, even when you're limited to older stage assets and themes, there's more that can be done to make it interesting. Like throw in parts of Apotos' scenery or even Force's version of metropolis into Sky Santuary. Even little visual tweaks to things would help a lot.

@@DesignDoc For me a benchmark for amnesia plot for a established protagonist is Ys Memories of Celceta (remake is Ys 4) in which Adol, the main character, gets amnesia and has to recover his memories. And it was great because the memories served to explore his past before the game series started (why he became adventurer) and to create intrigue why various villages are angry at him. It wasn't used to rehash stages. So I won't eat the excuse of memories because I've played a game that did the same concept much better.

Why do people assume "1/3 of the game" mean "approximately proportioned to the rest of the game." Cyber Space is obviously not designed to be 10 hours, since that's 4-5x longer than *any previous Sonic game of its kind*. Even if there are 7 Cyber Space stages for every island--so 35 at the least--that's a little over Colors' number of stages.
Reminds me of when Iizuka said in July that they were 80% done with the game, but despite obviously saying the game is content-complete, people somehow chose to read that as "there's entire chunks of the game still not implemented."
On a similar note, because Cyber Space does not serve as the bulk of the game, its role is incredibly different from other games. You ask why add Cyber Space stages if they aren't the best levels ever, or when they're focusing on the Open Zone, and that's because a lot of people will not transition into the Open Zone so easily. A person who prefers linear Sonic over open world Sonic has the option. Of course, they still have to interact with the Open Zone, but in a capacity that serves to reward them with linear levels. And judging by impressions, the people who would prefer the linear levels don't care at all that they're not perfect, and they don't even seem to notice.

  • @telekinesticman
    @telekinesticman Год назад +6

Agree on all of your sticking points with the game, I think that even if the open world does have some initially interesting locations, it likely won't hold up very much on a second playthrough. The cyberspace stuff is shockingly bad and the combat appears incredibly automated.
I understand the interest in seeing where this goes and how it can improve in future, but I still think that's a *really* sad outlook to have that essentially admits Frontiers doesn't look that good. Not once during the leadup to games I've anticipated like Metroid Dread and Bayonetta 3 did I stop and think "can't wait to see how this improves in the next game!", because the game I was looking forward to in the first place still had yet to release. People got really mad at me for saying this but I think it's important to reiterate. If you're already thinking "don't worry guys, the next game will fix it!" then the game you're looking forward to probably isn't very good. Not saying that *you* don't understand that, but that many other people don't.

I think it very much so will be the foundation for sonic to come, personally I'd like it to be better and even have the sacred (Momentum) in the "open zone" but at least the drop dash has it. The controls are very much fine and cyloop is pretty responsive. I'd say on the controls side it's pretty swell, at max settings and full speed. Cyberspace as you said is honestly the worst part of the game(controls were different too and oh god air boosting there is terrible) and I'd wish we finally let go of nostalgia and idc how you try to make it fit with the narrative use other stages then GH, CP and SS! ugh. Combat? it is pretty mashy and tbh werehog was too but I *feel* with the full skill tree unlocked it might be fun to see all the things you can do. Still would wait for more trustworthy people like you to play the game for a bit before I buy tho.

Over the course of the past few months, I've been a lot more optimistic for this game. I'm still quite nervous about it since Forces, Colors Ultimate, and even Origins to a slight extent had a really rough landing after those games gave people high hopes, myself included. But seeing all of the people who got to play it speak very positively about it, including people that I very much trust their opinion of, it's made me excited to see what this game has to offer when actually playing it.
The replay value aspect is a little worrying, since Cyberspace levels aren't looking interesting enough to be ran through again and again, but honestly if the game does end up being shorter than expected on a casual run (like 8-9 hours), then I genuinely think that this game has speedrun potential, and I think that's what could keep Sonic veterans coming back.
I heard in an interview for the game from the director that normally players go back to go through levels as fast as they can in other Sonic games like Generations, but for this game, it could be an interesting challenge to see how fast you can go through the entire game. If this game isn't super long, then I think I'd be very interested in speedrunning this game to try to get the fastest route possible to the end of the game, provided that progression isn't entirely linear and there are multiple ways to get the keys other than just Cyberspace.
Since you can't get to the final boss at the start of the game like Breath of the Wild, I bet speedruns for this will be longer than that game, but if the optimized speedrun for this game could be like 1-4 hours, I think that would be the main reason to go back and play over and over again. At least that's my take. I'm hoping this is a good speedrun because that'll make me wanna go back.
