Honestly, I think those fans are just trying to suppress others. They know it's crap, they know it's not acceptable, but they don't want to have to acknowledge it. The worst part is the older fans with a large platform are essentially protecting them, just so they can continue to moan about the 2000s fans. All I'll say about these fans that are going around suppressing more critical fans, they have no right to EVER crap on the 2000s games ever again (even the bad games). For all the garbage I've seen them excuse in the past two years (with Colors Ultimate, Origins and now Frontiers). I do not want to EVER see them moan about those 2000s games ever again. Those apologists have lost the right to be taken seriously. Proving they do NOT care about quality.
This defensive behavior not only happens with Sonic, I have received similar responses to comments I made, sometimes not even stuff as minor as a slight redesign; I once complained about a game getting day one dlc and a couple of people got defensive because it wasn't a lot of content being locked behind a paywall, as if that somehow makes it okay to cut content from a game to sell it separately.

8:50 Ngl, personally, hearing about how the fanbase doesn't like criticism always seems baffling to me, since everywhere I go, I often see or hear more people dumping on the series, especially within the fanbase itself, than defending it.
I feel like its mostly cause of people like game grumps who just never-endingly shit on sonic for no real reason other than they played sonic 06 that one time. Believe me though, the side that defends the games to the total extreme do exist, Im friends with one of them and they unironically are in the boat of "IGN made sonic frontiers look bad like they did with unleashed"
GUYS GUYS GUYS! AT THE LAST BOSS FIGHT IN FRONTIERS, SONIC REALIZES HE CAN'T WIN AND SAYS, "Gah! I can't win without... Myself!" And then Classic Sonic comes out. And they both makeout. THE END
When Generations was released, they announced Classic Sonic, inspired by the 90's design The thing is that Classic Sonic from Gens is different from the Classic Sonic from the 90's Most of the examples are that Gens Classic has a lighter shade of blue, the 3D models are inaccurate to the og design and has no charisma, he acts cute when the OG Classic never did as much, he doesnt talk while OG Classic did. This has been for a while but the Santiago meme is the peak, idk how it started but its a clear critic saying Gens Classic is not OG Classic, saying he is.... god dammit I cant belive Im gonna say it, an impostor , and his true name is Santiago and he replaced the true OG Classic Soni
First thing I thought of when I saw the "dont fall for his lies" was another one of them with a alleged Yoshi imposter called Josh. Really peaked me when I saw a similar thing happening here.
I have literally recieved personal insults online about my irl appearance for pointing out minor things im not too fond off about Sonic Frontiers, this fanbase has gotten to all new levels of defensive recently.
Ironically those fans are making me even more skeptical about the game because what they fail to realize is that most excuses they're making are the same ones they used before Forces launched. Talk about setting red flags.
I like this channels videos, not only do they feel different to his friends videos but they’re very enjoyable because I’ve always been a sonic fan even if the games aren’t good. The good and bad of these discussions reminds me of why I’m a sonic fan
SplashDash you better watch your back, cause Santiago does not like when he's critized/bothered! Also, he's genius when it comes by making massacres without leaving a trace of their victims!
Apparently Sega might be making this a canon character, since in the old version of sonic speed simulator, there was a message under the bridge that said “santiago is gone”. (Or it’s just for the memes)
...How did I not notice you were Mark until that Story Trailer response bit?! Anyway, I'm glad Santiago's father made it out of the crash and it is so weirdly wholesome to have his memories come back that way. Seriously, I couldn't help but smile. I hope he just deleted his Twitter for the sake of getting away from the very community both treating it as gospel AND pretending it's a hit piece so the dude can recover and have a great life. I definitely prefer Sonic's Saturn era expressiveness to what he is now, but it's still Classic Sonic at the end of the day for me, so either way it's fine.
The thing that irks me about the Eggman logo thing was...honestly...the phrasing of the tweet. "wow, there's no way they screwed up that badly" I and many others looked at the picture and went "...I don't get it, what's the issue?". We literally had to be told what the issue was. At that point, why make a big deal out of it? Like, if the person had said something like "Anyone else noticed that Origins used the wrong logo?", or "They used the wrong Eggman logo in Origins lmao", I wouldn't have been all that bothered. But they seemingly made it seem like a big deal, which...was it? Was it _really?_ As much as I couldn't care less about Classic Sonic design debates (both because I'm not all that well versed in character design, and because... I just didn't really care), I could at least see where people are coming from. But this just seemed like a genuinely needless nitpick. To be clear, I don't think that the person who made the tweet was going out of their way to be malicious or anything of the sort. I just think that either: A) They made a mountain out of a molehill in the heat of the moment, or B) They wanted to bring attention to a minor mistake and just made a goof up in their wording.
Your videos are great and your point of view on the fandom refusing any kind of critical analysis/discussion on short comings of the sonic franchise is SO fucking important I hope you're aware how needed content like yours is
honestly people should really gibe their own criticisms regardless of how minor or major it is and not just focus on vitriolically defending the game from obvious bait as free advertisement i felt this with halo infinite- also another game that turned a series into an open world with some new mechanics and nostalgic callbacks. halo is more well regarded than sonic is even in the 2010's but just like sonic, a shift happened and a complete misunderstanding of what made it great warped the franchise into a series filled with mediocre games, which is weird cause the halo trilogy is the cornerstone of modern video games in this case, a guy says "where's all the detail" comparing it to call of duty where the spartan shoots the fruit and people suddenly come to hound on the guy, yet become ignorant to the fact that the game comes with severe, crippling flaws that would make the game go from 200,000 people at lunch to single digit thousands. - what happened after halo 5? they just gloss over it despite directly basing events off of it - what happened to cortana? why is she replaced by literally paimon from genshin impact? - where are the other game modes? infection? shotty snipers? oh, after launch? sure. launch came almost a year ago. where is infection? - why is there only one biome with only a day and night setting? ironically, frontiers is releasing with five different original islands, with more dynamic weather lmaoooo hell while not open and large, previous halo games have such a wide variety of locales that it's kinda weird to see only one for this title while i'd still be down to play frontiers, i was also down to play halo thinking it was gonna be great. it WAS great, but it was crippled by problems that were on our face that no one brought to light. how saddening that many others have to eagerly wait for mediocre releases of many franchises with some exceptions and all we can do to have a semblance of quality and grandness is look back to when they made those with these qualities
Grate video, but I do have one nitpick. though. Santiago is more of a cyan then a lighter shade of blue/indigo. While cyan looks like a lighter blue, it's a completely different hue on the color wheel. it's kind of the equivalent of saying yellow is a lighter shade of orange. like I said, it's a nitpick bit I just wanted to point that out.
"I FOUND YOU, FAKER!" "Faker? I think YOU'RE the fake hedgehog around here! YOU comparing yourself to ME? HA!! you're not even good enough to be my fake!" "I'LL MAKE YOU EAT THESE WORDS!!!!"
I’m so with you on hating the Sonic Defence Force. I saw a similar thing with people defending the fact that the Cyberspace levels are just reusing old level designs. Some of the arguments used are just pathetic, my favourite being, “it’s an optional part of the game, stop taking it seriously.”
The most pathetic one I saw was someone saying it's stupid to hate someone for using the same pen every day, therefore it's stupid to hate the devs for recycling the same levels constantly. Couldn't even make a good parallel.
@@kirbo4252 It's been confirmed from the footage that several of the cyberspace levels are copy/pasted or trimmed down copies of levels from previous games. One of them is literally Sonic Generations' Green Hill but shorter and with a sunset background, another is Generations' Chemical Plant without the 2D segments and another is just Sonic Unleashed's tutorial level but with Green Hill assets, and so on. It's the laziest they've been yet in terms of recycling content.
Thank you for talking about the toxic positivity of the fanbase recently. It seems like we can't have any sort of conversation about anything in this franchise
For the modern Eggman symbol bit I saw it more as "Lol Robotnik is experimenting with designs". Like maybe he liked it so much he styled his look after that in the Adventure games.
Not a bad discussion, but I do think this was at least a little one-sided. While I agree Santiago just existing has made the more "optimistic" side of the fandom way more defensive and short-tempered, I can't help but notice you've neglected to talk about how it's affected the "pessimistic" side's train of thought as well. A fair amount of fans on the Santiago gravy train I've seen to be quite pretentious. I remember a Twitter user recently made a Gens Classic Sonic appreciation post - which wasn't made to push any message or agenda, or target any group of fans in particular - and their replies got absolutely swamped with the meme, usually with the caption "He tricked you!" They found it quite disheartening, especially since it kept happening after their request to stop posting the meme in the replies. Jinjin quote tweeted the post as well, but pretty sure he only did so just to take in how well his meme had spread, rather than telling people to stop annoying them. Take that for what you will. There's also a tweet from SNick, reading: "Santiago is an in-genuine Sonic, the one that's driven by the sole purpose of corporate nostalgia and nothing more, passion being sacrificed for that of greed." I mean, you can critique the design and its appearances all you want, but it's just so hyperbolic, way too dramatised. Again, take that for what you will. I feel there's also a point to be made about condensing design or writing issues into end-all terms, like "Mary Sue", "CalArts", or, to use another Sonic-based example, "momentum", where the term is repeated so often, that it eventually loses its meaning and turns from *constructive* to *destructive.* It ends up making people more close-minded about the media they consume and disregarding the developers' intentions, while it can also be confusing or pressuring for fans who just want to have peaceful discussions about the thing they like. Well, that's my 2 cents on the whole thing. I have nothing else to add lol.
I have a Santiago plush from Walmart, it looks like it’s trying to look like Sonic, yet ultimately fails by looking like an image converted into a plushie with “hedgehog quills” that stick out from the side of his head. He’s locked up in my closet as of now Edit: after hearing he saved someone’s life I let him out
I fully believe that the way Sonic fans react to any type of negativity is one reason why the games come out so half assed. They know Sonic fans are ready to defend them from all kinds of negativity for the sake of only keeping positive things floating about to hide all the bad stuff
i just hate that it always has to be this big drama. taking that eggman logo example, yeah its a funny little oversight but the tweet pointing it out says "theres no way they fucked up this hard" as if it's this major blight that ruins the entire package. yeah nitpick, point out flaws, but like everyone on every "side" needs to just chill
Ok so I do agree that I would’ve wanted some more explanation of the story from the story trailer. Didn’t really show much other than “Sonic might be bad in this scenario”, which honestly makes me thing of a line from Black Knight.
the creator of the meme made a post on his youtube channel the other day saying he was distancing himself from social platforms because of his baby being due soon and needing to prepare for fatherhood so yeah hes alright he just has a lot of responsibility he needs to prepare for
I absolutely hate how people get on Twitter when someone talks about details in this series. Like people trying to clown on someone for discussing which style they preferred for Sonic's shoes
I think that overdefensiveness came from… certain members of the fanbase genuinely turning those minor design changes into such a big deal that they think “completely ruins the franchise”, rather than just a simple preference (*coughs in Chris-chan*)

I commented on a video that despite everything, the cyberspace recycling sucks. And people got mad at me, like geeez I know is just a bit from the game and that the real focus are the open area with grass but still, it baffles me how my first impression about something is capable of pissing people
Honestly, I think those fans are just trying to suppress others.
Damnit even Splash Dash uses “impostEr” instead of “impostOr”
It is impostEr.
The impostor from that one game
@@virtualashez if you mean how Among Us spells it, it’s “ImpostOr”
@@ryanr27 no I’m talking about the correct spelling
@@virtualashez It is “Impostor”, that’s the correct spelling
It wont be a surprise for me if Santiago gets a reference on a new Sonic comic or movie
It'll be like the other memes that ascended, turning up about three years late to the party and three years before it gets revived.
I think they wanted to base the Generations designs on the Sonic 1/2 sprites. I personally don't like it cause he looks too round and "friendly"
Funny too since Sonic the Fighters already solved 3d Classic Sonic, and Tails, and many others
@@TechBlade9000 yeah, the Saturn/Sonic 3 design is what they should've went with
@@Laekith the thing is, the sonic 1 and 2 design is the more iconic one. Sega wouldnt really care which one the fans prefer, just the one that is more marketable towards a casual audience.
@@christosdoesthings yeah it's the most recognizable to casuals, I get why they did it, but as a fan I don't care for it
And they didn't give him a voice too like that was just so damning. Honestly if the guy who voiced Sonic in Satam was still around back then they should have hired him to voice Sonic.
I’m strongly convinced that 70-80% of Sonic fans have their standards set so high, that they don’t even know what makes a Sonic game good anymore.
Santiago saved someone's life. It's a good thing now.
Your take on frontiers later on in the video was great, watched your reaction to the trailer live and I have to agree, the story trailer has minimal to no story
9:33 this whole thing just makes me imagine that death note scene where Light gets his memory back by touching the death note
Imagine being such a toxic fan base that you turn a meme into a debate.
Lol
💀
The sonic fan base isn't toxic, twitter is.
Loved how Mark (Certainly not you) managed to get the fandom upset with one tweet.
(I already quite a lot of things there is to see in frontiers but even then, I don't have enough time in my day to get annoyed over a tweet.)
You will never catch me.
I caught you, you're in my heart and I love you.
You're not a criminal tho, you were framed.
Literally had no idea who Santiago was until now but I got say, he is one interesting man
Santiago made me realize that Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic aren't that differents.
As a guy named santiago, I don't know how I feel.
💀
The Sonic Unleashed night time music is perfect for a classy murder mystery XD
the tale of splash dash's imposter - ls mark
[Detective enters the scene. Walking into a common low-end bar. A great place for drinks and trouble. He sits down, taking in his surroundings. Feeling a small mount of melancholy of this familiar building]
"Heh, Green Hill is looking a lot more like Sand Hill now."
I Think one of the reasons why Classic Sonic looks more cutsie is to separate the 2 thing about Classic Sonic. He was adoarble but cool at the same time. So the Way i see it Classic Sonic represent the cute side of Sonic and Modern Sonic represent the cool side of Sonic. Or maybe it just cause Sega dont Care but maybe
I do think that might've been where they were going with it as well, but like alot of things in my life forces ruined it by keeping the model the same
@@GDRunny I like to learn more about how forces ruined your life, did they like ruin your marriage?
@@kirbo4252 they kept Santiago and wife left
The fact santiago made everything come back sort of makes it seem like making a meme was the peak of his life
8:50 Ngl, personally, hearing about how the fanbase doesn't like criticism always seems baffling to me, since everywhere I go, I often see or hear more people dumping on the series, especially within the fanbase itself, than defending it.
Both sides exist and they're both annoying, but people end up cherry picking one side and try to make the other side look worse
I like how the one thing that cured their amnesia, was a meme they made a year or two ago
Santiago is reason why our whole Universe have conflicts
What does conflict mean anyways? 😕
8:24 not only is this “controversy” a super funny joke, but now I think you just gave us a new reaction image!!
Keep in mind generations was a time paradox. In forces its almost like they treat classic sonic as a whole separate character. 🤨
Multiverse theory's a bitch
This is certainly another splash dash video, definitely one of the RUclips channels ever conceived
GUYS GUYS GUYS! AT THE LAST BOSS FIGHT IN FRONTIERS, SONIC REALIZES HE CAN'T WIN AND SAYS,
"Gah! I can't win without... Myself!"
And then Classic Sonic comes out.
And they both makeout.
THE END
NO FUCKING WAY
WtF?!
That's so goddamn autophiliac
That does not happen in sonic games what are you talking about?
That Santiago coma story goes very hard ngl.
When Generations was released, they announced Classic Sonic, inspired by the 90's design
The thing is that Classic Sonic from Gens is different from the Classic Sonic from the 90's
Most of the examples are that Gens Classic has a lighter shade of blue, the 3D models are inaccurate to the og design and has no charisma, he acts cute when the OG Classic never did as much, he doesnt talk while OG Classic did.
This has been for a while but the Santiago meme is the peak, idk how it started but its a clear critic saying Gens Classic is not OG Classic, saying he is.... god dammit I cant belive Im gonna say it, an impostor , and his true name is Santiago and he replaced the true OG Classic Soni
Imagine looking at just a Classic Sonic figure & being like
it's all coming back to me that meme I made my life I remember everything now
Ironically, the renders that people complain about use a completely different model compared to what you see in the game itself
First thing I thought of when I saw the "dont fall for his lies" was another one of them with a alleged Yoshi imposter called Josh.
Really peaked me when I saw a similar thing happening here.
I am filling a lawsuit cause you gave me a heart attack with this video.
"Santiago, why is that name all I can remember...and that gruesome image..."
Sonic Didn't went missing. Sonic has evolved into modern version but thinks that santiago is his younger self.
9:47
“Santiago saved a life that day. I think that’s important to remember”
Why is that funny?!
My theory is Santiago is Sonic's Nobody.
I Think Santiago Is Classic Sonic But A New Design
I like this channels videos, not only do they feel different to his friends videos but they’re very enjoyable because I’ve always been a sonic fan even if the games aren’t good. The good and bad of these discussions reminds me of why I’m a sonic fan
SplashDash you better watch your back, cause Santiago does not like when he's critized/bothered! Also, he's genius when it comes by making massacres without leaving a trace of their victims!
As somebody named Santiago, I do get constantly get charged with identity fraud.
Damn bro, a sonic meme brought someone's memory back
Apparently Sega might be making this a canon character, since in the old version of sonic speed simulator, there was a message under the bridge that said “santiago is gone”.
When generations dropped, no one had a problem with his model, but after forces, people started nitpicking the tiniest of details
The thing that irks me about the Eggman logo thing was...honestly...the phrasing of the tweet.
"wow, there's no way they screwed up that badly"
I and many others looked at the picture and went "...I don't get it, what's the issue?".
Was it _really?_
As much as I couldn't care less about Classic Sonic design debates (both because I'm not all that well versed in character design, and because... I just didn't really care), I could at least see where people are coming from.
But this just seemed like a genuinely needless nitpick.
To be clear, I don't think that the person who made the tweet was going out of their way to be malicious or anything of the sort.
I just think that either:
A) They made a mountain out of a molehill in the heat of the moment, or
B) They wanted to bring attention to a minor mistake and just made a goof up in their wording.
Your videos are great and your point of view on the fandom refusing any kind of critical analysis/discussion on short comings of the sonic franchise is SO fucking important I hope you're aware how needed content like yours is
honestly people should really gibe their own criticisms regardless of how minor or major it is and not just focus on vitriolically defending the game from obvious bait as free advertisement
i felt this with halo infinite- also another game that turned a series into an open world with some new mechanics and nostalgic callbacks. halo is more well regarded than sonic is even in the 2010's but just like sonic, a shift happened and a complete misunderstanding of what made it great warped the franchise into a series filled with mediocre games, which is weird cause the halo trilogy is the cornerstone of modern video games
in this case, a guy says "where's all the detail" comparing it to call of duty where the spartan shoots the fruit and people suddenly come to hound on the guy, yet become ignorant to the fact that the game comes with severe, crippling flaws that would make the game go from 200,000 people at lunch to single digit thousands.
- what happened after halo 5? they just gloss over it despite directly basing events off of it
- what happened to cortana? why is she replaced by literally paimon from genshin impact?
- where are the other game modes? infection? shotty snipers? oh, after launch? sure. launch came almost a year ago. where is infection?
- why is there only one biome with only a day and night setting? ironically, frontiers is releasing with five different original islands, with more dynamic weather lmaoooo
hell while not open and large, previous halo games have such a wide variety of locales that it's kinda weird to see only one for this title
while i'd still be down to play frontiers, i was also down to play halo thinking it was gonna be great. it WAS great, but it was crippled by problems that were on our face that no one brought to light. how saddening that many others have to eagerly wait for mediocre releases of many franchises with some exceptions and all we can do to have a semblance of quality and grandness is look back to when they made those with these qualities
If that amnesia story is true, then that had to be the most cathartic experience in the world for the creator.
Sonic fans must have allot of free time
Santiago has done one good thing. maybe we were wrong about him. He's a changed hedgehog
kinda glad you brought up the issue with sonic fans being defensive since its been hell ever since frontiers due to them defending the shit out of it
The problem is every discussion on Twitter ends like this.
"I FOUND YOU, FAKER!"
"Faker? I think YOU'RE the fake hedgehog around here! YOU comparing yourself to ME? HA!! you're not even good enough to be my fake!"
"I'LL MAKE YOU EAT THESE WORDS!!!!"
Wait it uses old level design like the exact same level from previous games like sonic generations or that it uses the same art style?
@@kirbo4252 It's been confirmed from the footage that several of the cyberspace levels are copy/pasted or trimmed down copies of levels from previous games. One of them is literally Sonic Generations' Green Hill but shorter and with a sunset background, another is Generations' Chemical Plant without the 2D segments and another is just Sonic Unleashed's tutorial level but with Green Hill assets, and so on. It's the laziest they've been yet in terms of recycling content.
@@MegaGlassguy oh, then yeah that's not good
Sonic literally changed colours during the events of the first 3-4 games.
Didn’t classic sonic show up in the Archie comics in 2009? Or are we just talking about the main canon
I remember a Twitter user recently made a Gens Classic Sonic appreciation post - which wasn't made to push any message or agenda, or target any group of fans in particular - and their replies got absolutely swamped with the meme, usually with the caption "He tricked you!"
They found it quite disheartening, especially since it kept happening after their request to stop posting the meme in the replies. Jinjin quote tweeted the post as well, but pretty sure he only did so just to take in how well his meme had spread, rather than telling people to stop annoying them. Take that for what you will.
There's also a tweet from SNick, reading:
"Santiago is an in-genuine Sonic, the one that's driven by the sole purpose of corporate nostalgia and nothing more, passion being sacrificed for that of greed."
I mean, you can critique the design and its appearances all you want, but it's just so hyperbolic, way too dramatised. Again, take that for what you will.
I feel there's also a point to be made about condensing design or writing issues into end-all terms, like "Mary Sue", "CalArts", or, to use another Sonic-based example, "momentum", where the term is repeated so often, that it eventually loses its meaning and turns from *constructive* to *destructive.*
It ends up making people more close-minded about the media they consume and disregarding the developers' intentions, while it can also be confusing or pressuring for fans who just want to have peaceful discussions about the thing they like.
He’s locked up in my closet as of now
Edit: after hearing he saved someone’s life I let him out
I fully believe that the way Sonic fans react to any type of negativity is one reason why the games come out so half assed. They know Sonic fans are ready to defend them from all kinds of negativity for the sake of only keeping positive things floating about to hide all the bad stuff
I love this meme💀
7:23 the logo appears multiple times in mania, so it’s probably intentional
FINALLY! SD talking about the real hard hitting issues in the Sonic universe.
wow, who knew a Light blue CLASSIC SONIC "Known as Santiago" saved someone's memory.
(Man imagine being that family bro)
For me personally the design details are so minuscule that I don’t think either version of classic sonic is better or worse
Classic Sonic's color in Generations wouldn't be nearly as jarring if Tails was a darker shade of orange like his classic counterpart.
To be fair I think that was only the western version of tails
i just hate that it always has to be this big drama. taking that eggman logo example, yeah its a funny little oversight but the tweet pointing it out says "theres no way they fucked up this hard" as if it's this major blight that ruins the entire package. yeah nitpick, point out flaws, but like everyone on every "side" needs to just chill
This is why I hate being in the sonic fandom sometimes no one can take a joke
I think people on Twitter are just insane in general.
They even insulted Annie Frank because "she was white" 💀
Ok so I do agree that I would’ve wanted some more explanation of the story from the story trailer. Didn’t really show much other than “Sonic might be bad in this scenario”, which honestly makes me thing of a line from Black Knight.
the creator of the meme made a post on his youtube channel the other day saying he was distancing himself from social platforms because of his baby being due soon and needing to prepare for fatherhood so yeah hes alright he just has a lot of responsibility he needs to prepare for
oh shit FR.... that's wholesome
9:01 Damn bruh I never knew that, that’s a sick ass story
I absolutely hate how people get on Twitter when someone talks about details in this series.
Like people trying to clown on someone for discussing which style they preferred for Sonic's shoes
I think that overdefensiveness came from… certain members of the fanbase genuinely turning those minor design changes into such a big deal that they think “completely ruins the franchise”, rather than just a simple preference (*coughs in Chris-chan*)
