Update: Carrier 17 Seer 2-Stage 4 ton system. Install this week. We went with a Carrier instead of Bosch only because the AHU can be disassembled easy with just 4 screws. Bosch can’t do that!

Imo, honesty is key. Money is no joke. Now it's up to the customer who after years of loyalty will hopefully get as best deal as they can with it still being a business..
Will have to just set money aside and do less fun things in order to pay for the upkeep. Sucks... But that's life..

lol i had that exact unit in ocala, fla from 2005 to 2024, got great use out of it for 19 years !!! replaced with goodman 4 ton, 14seer, hoping it does as well.

Sealant rarely works, only on small leaks
In my career as a service tech I've only seen the sealant work once-a very small leak. We don't even use the sealants for that reason.
Good guy mike to replace test all that wow from 2005 I still see em from 2002 same thing. R22 just isn't much available now. And you know the drop in replacement isn't so good.

How old is the house? Will the new 2-stage Carrier equipment also require replacement of the thermostat & thermostat wiring? Also: did Trane not have a suitable replacement system?

Dude Amana, they manufacture a modular blower (67lbs), detached with no coil the evap coil (54lbs) can be assembled together in an attic. That I myself have lifted into an attic alone.
It costs roughly $100 more.
You can get a 17.5" width unit up to 3 Tons.

R22 is expensive to BUY, let alone mark up to SELL to a client
High teens is a reasonable price point if you want a perfectionists installation. You get what you pay for in this industry, speaking from experience

Pathetic! 3 ac systems. Maybe needs to down size and move to a smaller home. 1 that needs replacing is 19 years old. Definitely got his monies worth. Grew up on LI without central ac. Attic fan and a couple of window shakers were added in the mid "70's after I moved out.
