In Michigan to pass the journeyman plumbers license in 1960 we had to wipe a lead straight joint and a inch and a half Y joint to pass the state exam.

@@PipeDoctor When I first moved in I jack hammered out part of a closet floor to put in a floor safe. I also made a plastic tent but still nasty. Mine was probably about 1/20th of what that floor took. I'm guessing they never got the pitch right or it shifted when they poured. All the houses down here are like that. Some plumbers if it's close to an outside wall will dig under it from a few ft out but either way a nasty job. I hope their homeowners is going to pay part of it. Everything is fixable with time and money.

Nice install!! A that lead pipe?? Would make a nice museum piece but you know? I find it ironic as old as I am and I have drunk hundreds of thousands of gallons out of lead pipes and guess what still kicking I still got the old lead cup that hung on the windmill we drank out of . I’m still here.. Personally I think it’s a big hype not saying that it ain’t true saying I think it’s a little over kill .🤷🏻‍♂️ ( edited fur a spell boo boo )

I about shit when you showed that old lead service. I thought it was still hooked in to the house at first. I don't know New York's plumbing code but in Kentucky if that lead service was still hooked in it would have to be reported to the state and the health department. Lead services are illegal in Kentucky.

Just for the sake of accuracy and information. A lead water service pipe from many decades ago will almost never show any deposited lead in a water sample and is considered safe for continued use (not that I would have one in my house)! The reason for this is because of the natural minerals such as calcium, magnesium and iron That naturally exist in the water, over the years, these minerals build up a barrier on the inside of the lead pipe. Lead being a soft malleable metal and incidentally is also a reactive metal makes it very easy for the minerals to chemically bond with it. A lead water service pipe that has been in use for many decades ( as long as it is not disturbed, cut or repaired) will most likely not leach any lead into the water supply! Many places in the country and the world including NYC! All the boroughs! Still have tens of thousands of lead water pipes in service! Lead water contamination is obviously still a real problem in so many cities and states, however, that contamination almost always comes from outside sources such as contaminated aquifers, contaminated holding tanks and human error.
