  • In this video, we will show how to enable the dedicated Service Mode for the rear brake replacement/service in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 Toyota RAV4. Using the Service Mode will allow you to fully release the electric parking brake without any additional tools or software.
    PRODUCT LINKS:
    1. REAR BRAKE PADS - Rear Brake Pad Set For 2019+ Toyota RAV4 - Raybestos Premium Raybestos Element3 EHT™ Replacement Rear Brake Pad Set for Select Lexus ES250/ES300h/ES350/NX200t/NX300/UX200/UX250h and Toyota Avalon/C-HR/Camry/RAV4 - amzn.to/48DzxzS.
    2. REAR BRAKE ROTOR (DISC) - SureStop Brake Disc For Toyota RAV4 2020 Driver/Passenger Side Rear Single Rotor - amzn.to/3RfFb40.
    ENABLING THE SERVICE MODE:
    1. Turn the key to the ON position. In the case of vehicles with a push start button, press it twice.
    2. Pull the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
    3. Push the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
    4. Push and hold the electronic parking brake button. You will hear the motors located on the rear calipers of the RAV4 unwinding all the way.
    If the above sequence does not work, try this sequence instead:
    1. Turn the key to the Ignition ON position. In the case of vehicles with a push start button, press it twice.
    2. Press the brake pedal.
    3. Pull the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
    4. Push the electronic parking brake button 3 times.
    5. Release the brake pedal. The Park indicator on the dash should be flashing.
    6. Push and hold the electronic parking brake button. You will hear the motors located on the rear calipers of the RAV4 unwinding all the way.
    Now the parking brake is fully released and you can service your rear brakes. You will be able to push in the piston all the way without the electric parking brake holding it or do any other service on the brakes.
    DISABLING THE SERVICE MODE (Before disabling the service mode, make sure that the rear calipers are fully reinstalled otherwise your piston may fall out!):
    1. Pull and hold the electronic parking brake button. This will return the electric motor to the proper position. Wait until you stop hearing the parking brake motor noise in the back.
    2. Pull the electronic parking brake button once to engage the parking brake. You are done.
    The difference between using the Service Mode and simply pressing the parking brake button once to disengage the parking brake is the fact that in the Service Mode, it gets released completely allowing you to fully unwind the motor.

    This isn’t accurate for a 2020 rav 4 atleast, you need to do the steps this says, pull up on the button 3 times, then push down 3 times, and then hit the brake pedal and push down for the 4th time pressing and holding, on the dash the park light will start flashing quickly - let go of the button, then repress the button and hold for a few seconds until you hear the epb motor releasing, then park on the dash will flicker slower and the light on the button itself will start flashing. Then to return out of brake maintenance mode, you pull the button up and hold and you will hear the motor retract back to regular position

      this is what actually work for me, I really appreciate your information, very helpful, I was about to start doing more research.
      just that I think you are not very clear when you say "quickly - let go of the button" I think it should be said, "let go of the button and pedal" then repress the button and hold...

    TOYOTA RAV-4
    EPR Service mode
    Preliminary:
    i - Fasten seat belt (to prevent
    annoying beeps during procedure).
    ii - Open left side window (to hear
    brake motor).
    ========================================
    A - Ignition On
    B - Depress brake pedal
    C - Press [DN] the (P) button to
    release parking brake.
    D - Release brake pedal.
    E - Ignition oFF.
    ----------------------------------------
    F - Ignition On, and within 8 seconds:
    G - Depress brake pedal
    H - [UP] [UP] [UP] [DN] [DN] [DN] the (P) button.
    I - Release brake pedal.
    J - Press [DN] the (P) button for 8 seconds.
    K - (P) LED on dashboard shall flash at 4 Hz.
    L - Brake motor slowly retracts piston's rear limit screw.
    M - Ignition oFF.
    N - (P) LED flashes at 1 Hz.
    ===================================================
    O - Service brakes.
    ===================================================
    P - Ignition On
    Q - Pull [UP] the (P) button for 8 seconds.
    R - Motor returns into normal position.
    S - Pull [UP] again to set parking brakes
    T - Press [DN] the (P) button to release.
    U - Depress brake pedal and shift
    from P to D and back to P.
    V - Release brake pedal, Parking brakes are reset.
    Also, do not forget: EPB service mode only retracts the electical limit screw and NOT the piston itself. (it is normal, absolutely NO service mode / special situation shall ever impair proper vehicle braking performance). You will need a piston compressor tool to fully retract the piston for pad replacement. Also pay attention for piston boot condition
    Something sure: Toyota engineers used to play a lot of
    video games in their youth time !!!

    Is this procedure needed to just replace pads?
    What happens if I just take off tire open caliper issue c clamp to compress and put new pads on and put it back together.
    There are so many conflicting opinions on this process in the comments and some even saying they couldn’t get the brakes to release and work correctly afterwards. Why do manufacturers have to make things so complicated I have changed brake pads at least 50 times in my life on many different vehicles. Now they add confusing steps to make it difficult

    • @MorozovAutomotive

      If you don't enable the service mode and try to compress the piston without unwinding the EPB motor all the way you can damage the motor.

      Yes, you do need to compress the piston after you have enabled the service mode for the rear brakes. You can either use the spreader tool or you can simply push it in with your fingers.

    For those of you who want to know how to activate the brake service mode for the rear brakes follow these steps:
    1. Set the ignition to 'ON'
    2. With your foot on the brake pedal, pull the parking brake switch 3 times then press it 4 times (hold the button on the 4th press)
    You will hear your rear brake piston completely retract allowing you to service the rear pads. I followed the steps and did it it with the caliper off of the car.!( I didn't know ) It pushed the piston out ! Causing leak of brake fluid and parking brake malfunction can i get help ?! 🥺😢

    • @authorjgamber
      @authorjgamber 5 месяцев назад

      Yes, but only when I tried to get the electronic e brake to move again because it was stuck too far shut (while I had the pads and rotors on rear left off), and that is what resulted in a small rupture in the rubber piston boot. Started leaking fluid. That was when I got the parking brake malfunction warning.
