"Brooks was here" gets me every time
😭
I've decided... not to stay 😢
Brooks was played by James Witmore a versatile Actor who starred in everything from Classic Sci-Fi "Them" to Hollywood Musicals "Kiss me Kate" .... He was also nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his one man film " Give'em Hell Harry " about President Harry S. Truman!
'So was Red' should give you some hope.
So was Red
"I don't know if it's a drama or escape type movie."
Yes.

Haha this is exactly how I felt too
He's not only a free man mentally and physically... He's a free man... Morganly.
hahahahahaahaha !! Here, have my like, sir.

Alright everybody, better luck next year
Stephen King tells a story of being confronted in a store by a women saying that she doesn’t like what he writes, so he ask her what she likes and she says Shawshank Redemption. He replied I wrote that. She told him no he didn’t and went away.
This is one of the facts of Stephen King I enjoying telling everyone!
Omg, thanks, this is good story
Thats hilarious lmao
In her face!!! Shawshank and Misery my top King faves!
@@chitanena1 But you have to admit, that King is definitely selling out in his old age to get as much money as possible to hand off to his kids etc. "The Dark Tower"... Particularly.... That had the potential to *BLOW* Lord of the Rings *OUT OF THE WATER* .... Especially with the science elements in the later books, it's a fucking magnum opus masterpiece of a book series.... The Movie however, total shit!!!
This movie is literally Morgan Freeman giving life lessons for over 2 hours

The Warden holds the bible, not knowing the hammer is inside, and says "REDEMTION lies within." UM YES!
That line is so good after seeing the ending haha
I think the line is Salvation lies within. That's the quote from Jesus and from the Bible. Unless you were being sarcastic, which I couldn't tell I'm sorry xD
And he hid it in the Book of Exodus, which is the part of the Bible where the Jews leave Egypt after being freed from slavery.
@@joepegel Wow you are very observant xD
Salvation, but yes. So good.

The Stephen King trifecta of perfection: The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Stand By Me
Shawshank and Stand By Me both came from the same short story collection, and there was a 3rd short story in there that was also made into a really good movie (Apt Pupil)
Isn't it strange that Steven King is known as a horror writer and his 3 top film successes were non horror?
@@barrystevens2699 yes, it’s very odd. Turns out his best work isn’t even horror. One of my favorite books of his is 11/22/63, and that’s not horror, so he’s overall really skilled

Shawshank Redemption - besides all the other accolades you can bestow upon it - is also a masterclass in how to do setup -> payoff properly. Frank Darabont + Stephen King = match made in Heaven.
Honestly some of the best payoffs I've ever seen, unbelievable 3rd act!
Notice that the rock hammer was kept under “Exodus”? Brilliant touch...
So cool!! Love that connection
@@BrandonLikesMovies My favorite part is the message Andy wrote to the warden inside. "Dear warden, you were right, salvation did lay within". Because that's what the warden told him when he gave him back his bible.
never noticed that!
Why is that important I don’t get it
@@troythivierge5110 Which part?
The story behind this movie being number 1 on IMDB is pretty insane. When The Dark Knight came out, the fans of that film thought it was the greatest thing ever and it deserved to be the highest rated film on IMDB and if you were alive in 2008 I’m sure you remember not being able to go anywhere or do anything without seeing The Dark Knight all over the place. Unfortunately for the Batman bros, the fans of The Godfather weren’t about to let their perfect film be overtaken by anything, least of which a comic book movie. So began the IMDB ratings war of 2008, The Godfather and The Dark Knight were constantly swapping positions for the top spot. Quietly while all this foolishness was going on Shawshank just kinda crept to the top and a sort of peace treaty was reached, if both films couldn’t be the highest rated then neither of them would be. That is your batshit crazy internet lore history lesson for the day, cheers. 🍻
Shirley you can't be serious
Lol, I didn't know that, well the Dark Knight has a huge teenager following, but it doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the top save for Ledger's Performance which does. Shawshank will remain No.1 for a very long time imo, it's just a better experience than the Godfather, people seeing it in the future will agree. The Godfather is technically brilliant, and has sublime acting, Shawshank has the better story, and the style of the film and characters are amazing.
Shawshank is deeply touching, Godfather is tame in comparison.
wow didn’t know that
@@cookiemason7546 He is serious. And don't call him Shirley.

It’s worth mentioning that the hammer was hidden in the beginning of the Book of Exodus, which tells the story of the Israelites deliverance from slavery, their flight to freedom and their eventual entrance into the promised land of God; paralleling Andy’s own story.
I am glad that someone else noticed that
IMDb no.1 of all time. Deffo in my top 10. Stunning movie.
Fun fact: Captain Hadley is played by Clancy Brown, great actor and famous voice actor. He has been on dozens and dozens of shows voicing characters, but his most famous...Mr. Krabs from Spongebob

It's in the full reaction! Unfortunately could only include so much on RUclips
It's a little bit Kafkaesque the way it plays out, that they aren't going to let you go until your spirit's so broken you just DGAF anymore, even when he was giving his speech about how toxic hope was, he'd would still put on his good boy persona for the parole hearing, the faint hope that they would buy it was still there.

“...he’s got a bird...that guy’s just a sweet old man...” ... that murdered his family, but in fairness, wasn’t mentioned in the movie, only in the novel
This masterpiece received no push or marketing when it was first released. I was at a 10:00 screening of Forest Gump. We were all leaving and some promotions girl was offering free passes to see the movie in 5 minutes. We all re-entered the theater, watched the movie and everyone was amazed. But the movie flopped due to know push from the studio. But thanks to only word-of-mouth, it became hugely popular. It’s still enjoyed years later as a masterpiece.
It was the No.1 rented film of 1995 in the US.
So you're homophobic.

That movie (and prison movies in general) is extremely homophobic. But at least they weren't gay-Nazis which is the usual praxis in Hollywood.
When Andy asked Red why do they call him Red and he says "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" is a nod to his character from the novel/short story.
Yes, Red was actually of Irish descent in the novella.
When Shawshank came out on VHS, I watched it at a friend's house after buying it. As the end credits hit, I went and woke my friends up, and told them "you have to get up and watch this now". And then I watched it again, straight away. Stunning. A good Tim Robbins movie is Arlington Road, Frank Darabont also directed The Mist. Shawshank is based on a Stephen King book! Fact fans.
I absolutely could've watched this one again immediately after I finished it
Colin Booth - The first time I watched Shawshank, I watched it 3 times in a row. No movie, before or since, has made such an impression on me. It’s the greatest movie ever made.
I´ve heard great things about Jacob´s Ladder, but never got to watch it.
But I always wanted to, because I´m a huge fan of the tv show Lost.
I know right? Fantastic film. The Green Mile is equally great. Couple of us guys went to watch it in the cinema back when it came out. We were crying crocodile tears towards the end.
Arlington Road is too underrated..It's tremendous!
Warden seeing a whole in the bible: "You were right, salvation lay within". Just perfect.
Incredible line after seeing the ending!
And in the book of Exodus, no less!
Shawshank is an absolutely brilliant movie. From a Stephen King short story, just like "Stand By Me," it just demonstrates that King is not just a horror writer. Of course, he has another masterpiece with "The Green Mile" as well.
Tim Robbins has been in a lot of good movies: Bull Durham, Mystic River, Arlington Road, and Dark Water for a few. He also appeared in Top Gun and Dead Man Walking.
I also watched this for the first time 2 days ago. I am 14 and this movie was recommended by my father. It is a must watch and an inspiring movie. My current fav movie
That's awesome!
When Red pulls the money out under the tree and still feels the need to look around...subtlety , great.
And people think that Stephen King is just a horror writer...
I was shocked to see it was based of a book by him!
@@BrandonLikesMovies Bro. Have you seen Misery(1990)? Great movie also based on King's book. Ps.. Edge of Tomorrow.. do it man, so good.
Stephen King is woefully underrated. Which sounds weird considering how massively successful he's been, but because so much of his work is horror it tends to be dismissed as substandard. I don't love everything he's written but the man is a master.
Some of his non-horror stories:
Dolores Claiborne
11/22/63
The Green Mile
The Running Man (Made into a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger)
Under The Dome
The Body (Novella made into the movie Stand by Me)
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption (Short story made into the movie The Shawshank Redemption)
The Dark Tower books
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
The Dead Zone
Colorado Kid
The Talisman
Joyland
Firestarter
The Tommyknockers
Misery
Some of his work gets labeled as horror, despite not actually being horror.
@@BrandonLikesMovies Stand by Me is also one of his, completely non-horror and fucking beautiful.

Dude, I really like your reactions overall but one part of why I like your videos is that your voice is so chill haha. A lot of ppl kinda annoy me when interrupting the movie with commentary
That means a lot to hear, thank you so much!
Yeah, it's like an ASMReaction.
Exactly. This is the 2nd video of his I´m watching and now I know, the chill doesn´t undermine the intensity of his reaction. Very relaxing to watch along, you can just perfectly concentrate on his feelings and your own and nothing distracting inbetween. Plus, perfect edits with clever commentary cur inbetween! I´m subbed now, too!
I think one of the reasons it's also so beloved, which you might suspect but haven't yet experienced, is that something about the film makes it infinitely rewatchable.
I wept like a child the first (and second and third) time I watched this film. The pure beauty of the theme blossoming at the end is magical. It’s a primeval message of hope and redemption that cuts to the very heart of what it means to be human.
What I love so much about this movie is it has that wonderful 3rd act, but then absolutely kills it with the epilogue🙂
You did a great job editing this, which had to be tough, but you hit all the notes.
I’ve seen this movie many times. If it’s on TV, I’ll usually leave it. But after so many viewings, it’s easy to forget how great it truly is. Watching through a 1st time viewer’s eyes really brought the joy of this movie back to me. Thanks for that,

Movies you need to see at least once:
Fight Club
Blade Runner
Alien/Aliens
Silence of the Lambs
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
The usual suspects, another must watch movie
The man from Earth
Goodfellas - a must. Fight club - nice one. Small addition to this list - Seven.
Everything but blade runner. Such a boring long movie
Alien is too boring but I hear your point
This movie should have won the Oscar for best picture in 1994. It was up against tough competition with "Pulp Fiction' and the winner 'Forest Gump".
Both those movies were boring for me. This should of won it

"The Mist" would be a fun science fiction/horror reaction.
Yeah... so "fun". I give it 4/5 just because of the last scene if you know what I mean.
That one is on my list!

The Mist is amazing and so underrated
The ending...
I know that Kevin Spacey is out of favor these days but "American Beauty" , "Swimming with Sharks" and "Usual Suspects are three very god films if you have never seen them. "American Beauty" being the first one i could recommend.
American Beauty is excellent. Usual Suspects is interesting, but I wouldn't consider it a good movie overall. The last fifteen minutes are what makes it.
I would take LA Confidential.
Agree with Bumpei Shiratori on Usual Suspects. I know many people worship that film. But for me it's an ok film with a great ending.

Cant wait to rewatch it! Thanks so much for your continued support, always appreciate your comments!
Chris M Pulp Fiction should have won imo the best film of the 90s
"I just hope I'll like it" he said, not yet realizing he was about to watch a movie about hope and how it changed a man's life from never allowing himself to hope to ending the movie with 5 sentences that start with "I hope" ^^
Many critics (especially newspaper critics) panned this film at release as it was early 1990's and fresh off of the "War on Drugs" + "Tough on Crime" eras. The reason was because they said the film "humanized prisoners and made them appear fluffy and lovable/relatable". This wasn't in vogue during the "Tough on Crime" era, and especially the way Shawshank showed Police/Law Enforcement/Wardens as being corrupt while the Prisoners were the "good guys" of the film that you cheered for.... It took longer than it should have for this film to be given the credit it deserved as times have changed and its far more acceptable these days to tell stories like this in the U.S. Shawshank is still IMO the greatest film to lose out on a Best Picture Oscar (Forest Gump took it).
Literally saw someone comment ‘do shawshank’ on a godfather video yesterday and my gosh, is this a coincidence. One of the most inspirational films I’ve ever seen!
I was not expecting to be so happy and uplifted after watching it!
@@BrandonLikesMovies Have you seen The Fountain (2006)? It´s #1 on my list...
But DEFINITELY not a movie for everyone. But you seem to be appreciative of Roger Deakins´ style of cinematography, so you definitely seem to know enough to be able to appreciate The Fountain, too.
Would love to see more people on RUclips talk about that one. It´s from Darren Aronofsky, who I hear is a pretentious fuck in real life. Which is probably true to some degree, but I don´t care for the guy, I just seem to love his movies. He also made Mother, which I liked, but seeing you react to The Fountain would actually make me very happy. Not even Chris Stuckmann or Jeremy Jahns have ever reviewed that movie but I think it´s great and definitely deserves more attention than that.
One of my all time favorite movies. So glad that you enjoyed it. Seeing the reveals through your reactions brings back some of those feelings from long ago. Thank you.
That 3rd act was blowing my mind!! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I think people may have not recommended as much because they assume you have seen it. It’s such an icon movie and is rerun all the time on TV. It hard on a lazy Sunday flipping through the channels to end up watching it again even though it has 75 minutes of commercials.
"Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'.." became a personal life motto of mine because of Stephen King's short novella, and this movie. This movie IS life. This is the only movie I can take a Sunday nap with because of the peaceful music and Morgan Freeman's voice. And as the movie plays, even with my eyes closed, I can "see" every scene in my mind..
"Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" By Stephen King. "Stand by Me." aka "The body" also by Stephen King.

That was my first thought. I'm so glad that I grew up in the golden age of cinema. Sure, you could watch stuff on cable and VHS, but the movies from the 80s and early 90s were all intended to be watched under cinema-like conditions.
@@gibbletronic The golden age of cinema lasted about 40-50 years and ended around 1960. If you grew up in the 80s and 90s you didn't grow up during the golden age. Its fine if you like movies from that period better. But the golden age is a specific term and refers to a specific time period.

@@moonlitegram agreed I always think of the Golden age as 40s to 60s and I love 40s to 50s the most along with the 80s.
@@moonlitegram To be nitpickingly accurate, the Golden Age lasted from the early advent of "talkies" in the mid-1920s when films were first produced with sound up to about 1963, with most focus placed on the films produced during the 40s and 50s.
The scene were Red is going to "Buxton" and is looking for the tree is one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. So beautifully shot and with the music.
This is not a movie about a prison escape. This is a movie about hope. It has given me inspiration in some of the darker times of my life. Thank you for your reaction!
Will never forget my first viewing of this movie. When I was around 10y old I was at a friends house and his family had rented two movies that were laying around. It has so much rewatchability
Saw it shortly after video release 25 years ago, at the age of 18, in our dormitory lounge. Had to rush outside to privately process what I'd just seen, with tears welling up.
The Shawshank Redemption is one of those films that subvert expectations well. As someone I can't remember once said, "Writing is delivering to your audience what they want, but in a manner that they don't see coming."
This movie's rewatchability is insane, I hate rewatching movies and I've seen this at least 10 times. Like you said, when the warden tosses Andy's cell, it seems pretty lax but when you rewatch it you know what Andy is hiding!!!! I love this movie :)

Frank darabont is the director. He also did The Mist and Green Mile
He also is the creator of The Walking dead television show
Frank Darabont, the director, is known for this partnership doing Stephen King's adaptations. He is one of the best at it. This movie, The Green Mile and The Mist are the best trio. I love the endings on those movies - although, The Mist ending is very upsetting, I must warn hahaha.
I will never forget the first time I saw it. and a bunch of other high school junior/seniors were in a special summer program back in '95. We were allowed to watch movies in the main lecture hall on our off time and this was one that was picked. We got about halfway through and a major thunderstorm roared through the campus--just in time to set up that last act. And then just as we were leaving the downpour hit. We were soaked. It was awesome.
Andy was so anxious for Red to get him Rita Heyworth because he discovered how easy it would be to dig away at the wall in his cell, and he wanted to hide it from the guards. That was also the night the Sisters beat Andy up, and since Andy was in the infirmary the light was off in Andy's cell and hid the chunk he dug out of his wall. By the time Andy got back, his poster was there and he could hide his work.
Another great choice of movie!
Thank you!! Glad I finally got to check this one out!
"Salvation lies within"
The Warden hands Andy the bible, and inside lies the rock hammer. Poetry.
I'm getting the impression that some believe the rock hammer was already in the bible at the time it was presented to Andy. It was concealed at a later time.
Dennis Bateman What on earth are you talking about? He hides the rock hammer in the bible to hide it from the Warden if they search his cell. The poster is already up on the wall which means he’s already started digging, so where else does he hide the hammer? Up his arse?
@@Nero-ox5tw The Bible is presented to him by the warden and at that time the rock hammer is not inside the book. It is hidden in there later. That's my point. Dennis Bateman when the Warden says “salvation lies within”?? That’s what you’re talking about?
@@Nero-ox5tw Ironically, yes. Perhaps I'm misreading what you posted earlier. When you wrote, "The warden hands Andy the Bible and inside lies the rock hammer.", it appears that you are saying the rock hammer lies inside the Bible at the time that Andy is handed the Bible. That would not be the case. It may be that what you were intending to say was, 'The warden hands Andy the Bible and inside (after it was placed there by Andy) lies the rock hammer. I have to admit I laughed when you said the warden wanted Andy to stay because he was 'helping'. The warden is running all sorts of scams and Andy is his slave accountant. Andy KNOWS what's going on. There's no way the warden would let him out of that prison alive. Sending Andy to the hole for a month is nothing, he'd kill Andy if needed.
Great little gem, when the Warden talked to Andy at the beginning, he handed him his bible back through the bars with the line "Salvation lies within", then at the end while the FBI is driving up, the Warden finds Andy's bible in his safe (in place of his dirty record book) with the inscription "You were right, salvation DID lie within". lol
#1 movie for me too. So many incredible scenes in that movie. But for me, the ending scene is absolute perfection. There is no dialog needed for a moment like that.
Tim Robbins was incredible in Mystic River with Sean Penn.
The reason his nickname is red because in the book he’s a red headed Irish man
One of my top 5 all time favourite films. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins shine, as does everyone else in the cast. It's one of those few films that, despite being LONG I can always sit down and watch from start to finish when I catch it on television. Just grips you.
The guy who plays Hadley also does the voice for Mr. Crabs on Spongebob
On a similar vein, I would recommend "The Count of Montecristo" if you haven´t seen it.
Cheers man, I love remembering these classics with your reaction.
I second this motion! Although the movie differs GREATLY in important moments from the novel, it's still my Favorite retelling of this story. It was also one of Sir Richard Harris' last films. If I remember correctly it was his last film that he was able to see once completed.
Amazing movie!
Crisco ;)
"It's Cristo, you dumb shit"
Do the Green Mile next if you haven't already.
It's on my watch list 🙂
@@BrandonLikesMovies Totally need to see Green Mile after this. Great in a different way. All the feels!! Also for other Tim Robbins movies, see The Hudsucker Proxy, Jacob's Ladder, Arlington Road amongst many others.
@@BrandonLikesMovies The Green Mile would be perfect for next......
Mystic River is also great. I also love Bob Roberts and think it's more relevant now than in 1992 but if this channel wants to stay apolitical it needs to stay away from that. But for Tim Robbins movies, even though he's a side character in it, you must watch Howard The Duck...because you've seen him in the best ranked movie, now you need to see him in one of the worst.
That movie will make any grown man cry, and it's totally worth it.
I have watched this movie so many times..and everytime I get struck by the emotions of it..that is telling on the caliber of film it is ..when one can rewatch it many of times and still get those feelings.
honestly, id be hard pressed to find another movie that I like more than this one. its probably my favorite film of all time...whenever i see red walking towards andy on that beach i get hit with a wave of good feels...
It's criminal that Frank Darabont hasn't made a film in over a decade.
Shawshank redemption, the green mile, Scent of a woman,The terminal, american history x. Theres too many good movies
Scent of a Woman, man, what a movie! Some of the best acting from Al Pacino in my opinion.
Anything nearly as good from the recent decade? Haven't really watched more than maybe 1 movie per year for abut 15 years.
Feels great to stumble upon channels like yours ,your reactions just seem so genuine.
I watched it when it came out. I was in high school. The feels stayed with me for weeks.
It definitely leaves an impact after watching!
