      I was stalked by a “friendly” black bear in the Great Smoky Mtn NP for almost a mile. I grew up on a horse farm and was conditioned from a young age to stay calm around animals. I think that’s what saved me because while my legs were twitching to run, I willed myself to remain calm and not run. The bear was about 40 yards above me up in the woods and matching my pace step for step. It was the longest walk damn walk of my life. When I finally got to my boat on the shore of Lake Fontana, I let it drift out into the channel and just sat there quietly having an aneurysm from all the adrenaline pumping through me.

      That creek is notorious for having a lot of bears and having bad bears. By bad bear, I mean a persistent bear that is not afraid of humans and not easy to scare away.
      Hazel Creek has great trout fishing but if you ask about Hazel Creek on any online forum about fishing in the Smokies, every response you get will contain either a warning about the bears or a story from someone who like me had an encounter with a bad bear there.

    OH, I know the one with Tapirs being a candle reference - there's a type of candle called a 'taper' which narrows down and used to be used for transmitting a flame from one candle to another before lighters and matches were available. Their thin and tapered shape (hence the name) was ideal for when you had to tilt them to transfer the fire along without costing an undue amount of wax. They haven't been used much at all for a very long time, but if you see any media where someone's using one thin candle to light another candle, the thin one is probably meant to be a taper!
    And, of course, Tapir/Taper are close in pronunciation in spite of having no linguistic connections.

      the group designations for animals - or terms of venery - aren't academically correct names, they're just flavors which are derived from contexts in which they were used (a lot of them from the Book of Saint Albans). It's pretty much just a way to denote flavor, or an interpretation of the animals in groups. It's perfectly valid to use any term in that fashion, but of course calling them a 'crime of koalas' - let's say - will probably be met with confusion since they seem so harmless.

      Im not disagreeing with you since Polar bears are the only bear that is strictly carnivorous. But imo thats not all the way true. Id say tigers get that rap the most. Tigers (my favorite animal) sadly have the "best" reputation for maneating. Theres three factors to consider. The areas in some south asian countries have rural or low industry towns that overlap with tiger territory and as youd expect theres.....been contact between humans and tigers. Two, adult male tigers have a ridiculous range of what they deem their territory, with some being tagged to circumvent an area with the circumference of 20 miles. With that being the case male tigers run into conflict with man even in more industrial parts of sputh asia. Third Tigers are very vengeful and i know that sounds ridiculous but fkr some reason they're able to remember faces and smells of particular people especially those theyve crossed with. So the stories of villages being attacked by a single vengeful tiger actually has some weight to them.
      But the same can be said of roaming male lion groups, and other predators that get too old or damaged to hunt regular prey.
      I see your point thpugh

    • @Smitty1Werbenjägermanjensen
      @Smitty1Werbenjägermanjensen 2 года назад +1

      Incorrect, lions will too. Especially if they have an injury in their mouth or jaw or some dental disease. Because they will then seek softer, easier prey which is humans. For example, The lions that the movie Ghost and the Darkness is based on, the Tsavo Man-Eaters, more than likely had this issue which is why they were exclusively hunting humans. Fun Fact: though the Tsavo Man-Eaters didn’t have manes they were male lions.
      Carnivores are not too different from one another, they need to hunt to eat. If they can’t hunt their usual prey for whatever reason they will try to hunt something else. Unfortunately for some people, they happen to be the something else.

    Fun fact you didn't ask for: I was at gator land with my grandma when I was I think 10, they had alot if reptiles and ofc GATORS. So they start a show where they someone basically just shows us the gators and kinda wrestles it. I was chosen to pick which one. I being a kid and wanted blood, picked the biggest one I could. He literally looked at me and said " you had to pick the biggest one?" I laughed and sat down we watched him do the show and left. I remember being slightly worried cause I KNEW these big guys were millions of years old.

    I laughed all the way through this and learned so much! Thank you! I think it's called a 'Candle' of Tapirs because it'a play on the word 'Taper' which is an English term to describe a long thin wax candle that was used to light bigger candles/gas lights back in the day.

    I live out in the country. I know the woods and the trails around me like the back of my hand. I usually have bells or talk to my dog enough to not run into a black bear, cause they know to avoid humans. Catch em on trail cams all the time, but we co-exist. I just...I don't get any of the watermelons I plant. They're polite about it. They only take the watermelons. They break them in half and usually leave big pieces that my dogs eat. They're smart and scared enough not to hurt me. My only worry is that they'll learn where the plant is and keep coming back to my yard and i'll run into them at some point. They don't take anything that's inside the fence. They don't take anything that's more than halfway from the treeline to my house. Tbh, I'm more afraid of rattlesnakes than them. It's a lovely coexistence that we've got going.

    1:06 There actually is a Pokemon that is partially based on this creature. It is called Shellos and Gastrodon and they are both based on sea slugs in general, but the East Sea form has more similarities to nudibranches. But they are both most likely based more closely on sea bunnies

    I really like that you respectfully won’t do a negative video about dogs (even though it would be funny) but could you do one about selecting the right breed for your lifestyle. Dogs are great but I feel like some people don’t realize their dogs needs!
