My experience with Johnny goes back to 1965. Lived at his home in '71 and trapped from his house, fisher and otter. Trapped with him in Virginia from '76-'80, then on my own '80-'82, again in '86-'87 alone. Trapped with him again in '82 in Colorado. A lot of memories, probably more than any other trapper. Kept diaries of all those years on the line, diaries I have not revisited for decades. Guess it's about time for a refresher. I remember when Johnny charged my friend Bob and I $2 to show us how to bait a conibear. It worked. In the Spring of '67 we caught our first two beaver under the ice in the hanging bait sets. As kids, we were thrilled. Remember it like it was yesterday. Think we had set 3 traps. Chopping holes in the ice, it was always a thrill feeling the weight of a beaver in the conibear. Couldn't wait to get the hole opened to see how big the beaver was.
Good memories, Jim Comstock
Poor Ray had me out chopping holes so I could catch some beaver on the hanging bait set 20 years ago. Lot of work and a lot of fun learning from the old timers
Good story for sure. I sat with at some trapping conventions drinking a bit. He could tell a story.
He was a story teller for sure. Didn't really drink that much when we trapped together, just some cheap wine to sip on in the fur shed, Old Mr.Mac, Mad Dog, Winchester 30-30, nothing more than a $1.35, the limit. Never saw him drink beer, me either, maybe whiskey and something? I know in the later years he got into drinking a lot more at conventions. Remember hearing about his room mate, "Shake and Bake," sitting up against a porta potty at Neil Olsens, passed out, drunk, in a puddle after a heavy rain. The story was they cooked up some beaver liver on night with shake and bake after some serious drinking. Not sure if he really liked it all that much or maybe he wanted to provide more story telling for everyone else. @@MrThenry1988

@@Jimthorpesigns Was my honor and privilege to be on the line with your dad for all of those experiences. Hope you're well.
Excellent video!
👍
GOAT
Really good stuff!
Snaring neavervunder the ice is easy. A seasoned 2x4, a few wraps of bright green duct tape and a snare off each side. Stupid sple and samn effective
Aspen pole?
Usually he used poplar … (still have a couple of ‘em with his handwriting)
Interesting video. How old is it?
Filmed in 06'-07'
@@NorthAmericanTrapperTV I thought it was a lot older than that
Gonna get your rings stuck in a trap
😅🤞
How do you mount your trap on that little board on the bottom of the pole set?
