I never thought about thanking the translator!! Thank you for opening my eyes to that- you've just made a difference
On the thankless side of an otherwise dream job: I translate for academics and what frustrates me is that everyone thinks they can do your job just because they speak English to some extent. So they waste your time with endless style choices or other questions of little importance while the papers to translate pile up in my inbox. And they are pretty delicate flowers so it’s not like you can put them in their place with a few words. Noooo! You have to submit a PhD dissertation for each lexical choice you made!! 😂😂
taking things for granted is a society problem, not an issue for some professions. We cross bridges every day or sit in airplanes, noone asks who built these structures in the first place, unless it blows up.
I was shocked to hear the phrase, "Do not become a translator!" What a shocking entrance! I loved your comments. Rather than discouraging, I have found it constructive for cautious translators. I am currently translating a 300-page autobiography book into English, my first translation work. What is your advice to translators of autobiography? Thank you.
Unfortunately I've never translated a full-length autobiography, so I don't know, but it sounds interesting! I assume you're in contact with the author? Or at least the publishing house? They should be able to give you some direction. That sounds like a huge project for your first work though! May I ask how you got it?
I have a question.. can someone translate a translated book. I mean if a book is translated into second language and then another translator wants to translate the translated second language book to another third language. Assuming that the translator doesn’t know the original language of the book and they know the second language ... hope I make it clear :)
This happens pretty often. For example, I heard that it happened with Han Kang's "The Vegetarian". This book was quite popular in Italy and other countries in Europe, but there weren't any qualified Korean-Italian translators available, so they used the English version and translated that into Italian. So the book was translated from Korean-English-Italian.
Of course, this is never ideal. Anyway, at the end it is up to the publisher.

It’s called second-hand translation, as a matter of fact. A very common practice in past centuries especially with literature, for Russian, German, or other lesser-known languages.

I’m translating a book now for the first time. And it has a lot of illustration pictures.. do I have to use the same pic from the original book or I can use similar pic that serves the same purpose?
Hi there. This is entirely up to the author/publishing company. Usually they provide material such as the picture, etc. I would check with whoever assigned you the job.

Translator here. They take only wirh 3/5 years job experience not less. They pay too poor. Go into interpreting. I ended up teaching for 5 years now. Its frustrating i wish I had studied teacher from the start, and not to forget too much competition in common languages like German English
I think that you are just scratching the surface of a wiiiidely unrecognized problem. When we read a book, are we reading the author or the translator?! Do we like the author or the translator?!
Once recognized the problem, it mindblows you!;)

This is very true. I remember hearing once that a book in translation is read twice, once by the translator and second by the reader. This is true because both give their own interpretation to the original story in a way. Another reason why translation is just as much an art as a science.
