    Thanks for the video and the tip on where to get the hinges. The friction hinge idea sucked from the get-go. I'm a full time RV'er and let me tell you, 4 years after buying a brand-new Keystone Montana, the friction hinges are worn out and will NOT hold the door open in a 15mph wind gust. They should have kept using the door hooks on these things for reliability. Now I'm looking at having to buy and replace all 3 hinges to keep my door from constantly slamming shut

      That is definitely frustrating for such a new rig to have a problem with something as simple as a freaking door hinge...

    it's ALMOST always better to repair than start over with an overkill/high dollar replacement! thanks for taking the time to document your repair. i'm looking into adding this hinge to my existing door, to reduce the wind slamming/damage to the rv . it doesn't have this feature.

    This was timely. We went to check on our fifth wheel in storage yesterday and discovered we couldn’t shut the door because the top hinge was busted. Had to remove some screws and hammer it down. Got the door shut but big gap at top. Ordered a new hinge from e-trailer. Wanted to see how hard this was going to be. Yikes! I hope our hinges aren’t glued down like yours. It is criminal that Keystone wanted to replace the entire door. And same with the dealers. You should take pictures of the new hinge and send it to all of them with a laughing emoji. You did a fantastic job but not many people have the proper tools so they get hosed at the dealers. Thanks for posting the video.

    Thank you very much for your video. Especially where to buy that hinge. I just bought an RV, and open the door a few times and just noticed inside of the door skin was crushed, and door frame was bending .The top hinge was binding,now I can replace it after watching your video.

      Awesome! I was frustrated at how unhelpful my favorite dealer was and Keystone was absolutely useless. My dealer's only answer was to replace my whole door. Crazy.

    Those 'square headed screws' are a Canadian invention and are great screws for high-torque applications. They are called "Robertson" style. (They would be more famous than Philips head screws but Robertson refused to sell the patent to Ford motor company - so
    Ford went with the inferior Philips head making them famous.)
    Nice job on this!

    Way easier and faster. Good video though

  • @cturner1965

    Hello Jeff;
    While I understand what you are doing using the grinder, I am uncertain why you didn't use a drill and suitable size drill bit to "drill out" the rivets. It would have required a significant less effort to remove the old hinge. Overall, not a bad demonstration. Your attention to detail to straighten and paint the damaged trim on the door shows your desire to make things look good; not just work. I noticed you DID NOT replace the rivets on the hinge...any reason aside from the fact that the new hinge did not have holes for rivets or additional fasteners.

    • @jeffbriesemeister2284
      @jeffbriesemeister2284  4 года назад

      These rivets were very round & powder coated, plus since I had no need or intention to save the hinge, the grinder was easy and fast! If I had intention of saving the hinge, then drilling definitely makes sense.

    I see this video is 2 years old, how has your hinge held up? My hinges have completely ripped off from the door frame pulling that metal from it and exposing the Styrofoam under it. Also bottom hinge but now the top hinge is pulling away from the metal where the 3 screws are. I'm wondering if replacing the hinge would work for me or replacing the door. 😢

    • @integrationcontrols8298
      @integrationcontrols8298 4 года назад

      Grinding was easier as the rivets were rounded off & I had no intention of re-using the hinge, so there was nothing to damage. If I was going to reuse the hinge, I would have center punched & drilled. Simple as that really. It was only difficult to grind because I was trying to video the event. Now I have a gopro & a tripod so I can do my next video on instlaling the Floe air compressor bleed down system...
