    C.Gang & H. Zhanhao, China
The legend of the “Butterfly Lovers,” comes from ancient China almost 2000 years ago. The young woman Yingtai pretended to be a man in order to go to school. There she met Shanbo, who became her dearest friend. More than 3 years later, Shanbo finally figured out that Yingtai had been trying to tell him that she was a woman, and that she was in love with him. Unfortunately, he didn’t figure it out until her family had betrothed her to someone else. He died shortly afterward, and on Yingtai’s wedding day, the wind itself stopped the wedding procession long enough for her to run to his grave. She was never seen again, but a pair of butterflies appeared at the grave and flew away together. The wedding party realized that they were the spirits of Yingtai and Shanbo, reunited at last. Like the star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare, the Butterfly Lovers had a tragic yet beautiful end-inspiring Chinese music, dance, and drama for centuries to follow.
