- What is it like to work on ancient split ring rim wheels with biased tires and tubes? A PAIN!!! But for demonstration purposes we will dig into what it takes to break them down and reassemble them.

My dad had these on the truck camper we drove to Alaska. When we had to have a flat fixed, the mechanic was hammering on the ring. I remember my dad being pissed on how the guy was doing it. He could have used your video, if the internet existed then. Brought back memories!
I would be mad too! It took me a while of fumbling around off camera to get the technique down. Thanks for the family story!
That old tube had a TR150 valve stem which was hand bendable, I like the old tubes more because they were heavier and are good to keep for things like swimming or snow tubing.
Remember when they were getting rid of the split rim in the late 70s or the 80s?
Very helpful only thing I would have done was wire brush or wheel the ring area to clean up the rust and then as you did put a little oil the wire brush/wheel would have cleaned out a lot of crap that could go flying and make it a little easier as well. Great Video never see a split rim taken apart before I've done a lot of mags and steel rims in my years on my own cars & trucks...
You should call that tire machine, the Darth Vader machine!
Some tractor tires are still mounted this way. And sometimes while they're still on the tractor. Thank God for tubeless and radial tires, eh? 😅😅 And semi tires can be mounted right in the field. That's why theres just a tire on the back of the truck. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank the Lord tubeless radials were invented!!!🙃🥳💯😁
Can you imagine having to bust tires way back in the day on tractor/trailers all day long with a sledgehammer and tire spoons? I don’t care what anyone says, those weren’t the good ole days for them fellas.👍
Absolutely. I still see the guys when they swap out front end loader wheels such as a Cat 980 and my back just hurts watching them do it😕
i have to do a forklift wheel like this after the weekend. wish me luck
Ooof! Best of luck next week boss🫠💪🏼👏🏼
bridgestone owns firestone, several plants in the USA, i am retired now from them

To you as well my good man!
About 40 years ago our hunting camp got a old trailer house to move up north but the tires were shot so we fixed the split rims up best we knew how (we didnt)as we got near the end of our 120 mile trip we had to go through a small town and we heard a tire blow it was a tandem and that split rim went flying off up into a store just as a guy came walking out of building it went in through door behind him we just kept on going 😅
Oh my that’s quite a story!!!
I am yelling, from top of my throat, take the tube out First!!!! You hear me????? Tube out first, then it comes easyyyyyy!=)
I hear ya! Haha. I don’t know if it would have made a difference here. These old bias tires were so hard it probably would have been a bugger either way. Thanks for stopping by!
😬😁👍👍
I dunno who said it, but the difference between split rings and split rims is getting maimed or getting killed.
Dangerous stuff to mess with for sure
I have a set of dually wheels I need broken down and no tire machine…..
You don’t need a tire machine but I prefer it to save my back. Sounds like you might need to get a tire bead Buster , or a bead, breaking wedge, and possibly some spoons. I don’t envy you in the slightest.😕. Best to take them into a shop. It’s worth not blowing your back out boss 😏
how to properly 'mount' a split rim on a vehicle that isn't heavy equipment:
Take the rim off
Throw it in the dumpster
Get a new rim
That Sh&t is dangerous....
