- Converting an old gasoline only 10hp generator to run on LPG with a cheap aftermarket carburetor from Ebay. I just use the LP regulator but I may use the whole carb in the future
I use a fork lift regulator and it works fine
Just have to have a valve to control the fuel amount
We can see that the speed regulation controls are opening up and then closing down the butterfly for the fuel on the carborator. It won't pulse like that if it's NOT getting enough fuel. The speed controls either need to be adjusted or the gas pressure going into the carb needs to be reduced because it's going over speed on propane. Backing off the pressure regulator will probably cause it to smooth out.
The governor is trying to keep the engine speed stable under varying loads . With no load it’s searching and probably caused by bad air/ fuel ratio…. I have seen them even out under a heavier load.
Yeah, the regulator on the propane tank is from a 13hp generator, so it certainly should provide enough fuel flow. I ended up giving the generator to my bro-in-law to just run on gas. I do have another 8hp Homelite that I may try the regulator on it sometime soon!
Hi there just watched this video I'm interested in attempting to convert my small 2kvw generator i use for work to run on propane and also at home as I'm in South Africa and well we don't always have electricity sometimes can go a whole week without electricity and when you really lucky you get 20 hours of electricity a day and then damn electricity infrastructure ain't good either, I'm currently at 14:44. looking at the way the generator is running I'm wondering if the air vent hole you are connecting the propane on the carb diameter isn't maybe smaller than what the port of the dual carb propane inlet port is hence why the generator is continuously revving instead of running constantly at a even pace. Also wondering how long can the generator run off propane before you would need to give it a rest
Thank you for the vid and i will diff check to see if you got that 8HP conversion running smoothly
at18:24 the way that govender is bouncing to me means that it is not receiving enough fuel to run the genny steadily or could maybe be getting too much air and not enough fuel which makes me think that adjusting the butterfly "choke" to restrict airflow or that the air vent hole might be smaller than the dual carb setup has or even that spring is too week to run gas as it was made for petrol and if it could be possible to change the spring for a slightly stiffer spring could maybe help as when you hold it open it runs fine
I agree if you were able to mount the dual carb onto the genny that should fix the starving fuel issue. Also what you could've tried was to have the original bolt pattern on the intake welded closed, drilled and tapped to fit the dual carb bolt pattern if you are unable to get the correct one easily
@@DaPcGhost yeah, I was just experimenting to see if I could get it to run. As I may have mentioned, always use a regular that meters the LP to stop flow if the engine stops! It would be very dangerous without and wouldn’t run correctly under load anyways. I bought the conversion carburetor just to get the regulator cheap! If I made an adapter plate I probably could get it to run better using the whole carburetor assembly. In the video I am injecting the gas into the crankcase vent port, it probably would run better if I put a tap into the manifold just past the carb, it needs good engine vacuum to make the regulator work properly!
Good luck, I hope you can get something working!
Thanks for watching!
you need a small accurate low vollume valve inline
there is a valve on the carb and the regulator on the LP tank was from an LP generator with a bigger engine. Not sure what to do next, probably put a tap on the intake manifold just downstream from the carb, I admit, I haven't worked on this in a while
Thanks for watching!
Can the valves handle the conversition isnt it bad to convert something that is designed to run on gasoline to propane ?
Actually it’s better for your engine, no liquid to wash the oil off the cylinder walls, no liquids contaminating your engine oil. And the exhaust is far less toxic or polluting!
Could you just run propane to a pcv port on a Holley? Just cut the gas flow.
There always needs to be a regulator to control the air fuel ratio so as the engine speed and load varies it can control fuel flow. And most importantly, stop the fuel flow when the engine stops!
Hoping you like it because propane is best period
I have a 9kw dual fuel generator set up at home. I was just playing with this one. I didn’t get it to run perfectly but I did prove the concept.
Thanks for Watching!!
Can you still find the link to the LP carb you bought?
I bought it last November on ebay for $22. Just search for a dual fuel generator carburetor
If you use it complete you’ll have to bypass the electric fuel shutoff somehow
The electric fuel shutoff only needs to be connected if you use liquid gasoline, ethanol free only!
Did you buy the lp carb specific for a Tecumseh ? Please list a link.
The carb I bought wasn’t made for a Tecumseh engine so it won’t bolt on. I just wanted the LP regulator and this was the cheapest way to get one.. search for dual fuel carburetor on ebay
It's starving for more gas
Wrong regulator. Need a single LP regulator.
It’s a regulator that came with another generator so I assume it should work. I was feeding the lp in via the crankcase ventilation port, I don’t think it’s at a point in the intake to get steady vacuum pressure. Thanks for the comment, I gave the generator away so I don’t have it to experiment with. However, I do have another 8hp generator I might try to convert again!
Thanks for the comment and watching!
It appears your surging is caused by too high pressure from the propane tank regulator (20 psi). I got an adjustable regulator instead of a BBQ regulator. This video explains the problem. ruclips.net/video/orS2O-VFYL8/видео.html
Thanks for your input. Ill check out the video.? The input of the LP is not correct so I’m planning on putting a tap in the manifold after the carburetor. I suppose I can do it through a petcock to control the LP flow. Again, thanks for the tip.
Also, I bought this because it was a very cheap way to experiment
The regulator on the LP tank came with another duel fuel generator I purchased, not a bbq, so I’m assuming it’s the correct pressure
