    I think the Academy purposely ignored it because they know how precarious their show already is. The backlash to that is, this also ruins a lot of good will comedians will have to present/host. Why would anyone want to sign up if they could get assaulted on stage, in front of everyone, without consequence?

    • @ferallemur
      @ferallemur 2 года назад +4

      I think this concern is overstated.
      There is a certain type of roast comedy employed by a certain subset of comedians. Kathy Griffin comes to mind, as she tweeted out something very similar to this comment (that every comedian now had to be worried about people walking onstage). Ricky Gervais is another.
      Do they have to worry that somebody is going to walk onstage and punch them? Yes. But that was true before last night. It is a danger that comes with the territory of telling mean-spirited jokes directly to the faces of people who you know are not going to take it well.
      But that's not every comedian, by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not even supposed to be every award show. That kind of comedy is only ever okay at The Golden Globes, where the stakes aren't high and everybody is there drinking and partying. The Oscars are the actual prestigious award show, and jokes there aren't supposed to tear people down.
      So if, for example, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who should host every award show ever) were approached to host the Academy Awards, do we really think that they're going to be worried about being assaulted on stage? Probably not. They don't tell jokes that could ever provoke this sort of reaction. The vast majority of comedians don't. Hell, most comedians stick to the safest territory of all, self-effacing humor, and present the show as if it's a show full of beautiful, glamourous, wonderful people, being hosted by a peasant, unworthy to be in their presence. None of these comedians ever need to worry about getting punched, and aren't going to be irrationally worried about being the next assault victim.

    For the Oscars to be, relatively, successful, what they need to do is pretty simple, obvious stuff: Have 1 host, cut the unnecessary "comedy" bits, present every award live, allow winners to finish their speeches (especially the awards with multiple winners), & modernize the award categories (add stunt coordination, casting director, and voice performance). Keep the reunions and only have performances of nominated songs. The Oscars don't need frills. The Oscars are great because it's the OSCARS. It's the pinnacle. The rest will take care of itself.

Chris Rock declined to lay charges against Mr Smith. Perhaps it was because he felt partly guilty to the events, perhaps he had his arm twisted by the Academy not to do so, perhaps he thought it would send a wrong message to his African American audience in the wake of BLM... I honestly don't know. What I do know is that a criminal investigation of the matter would mean that Chris Rock wouldn't be able to comment on the incident on his current worldwide stand up tour.

    I just watched the 20 second clip when Will Smith dropped the mask for once and nothing else. When I saw that Amy Schumer was one of the hosts I already knew it would be bad.
    I completely agree with you about the host situation. Just get someone who is a natural in that role, do less bits and have more time for the awards. Billy Crystal always did a great job, I think Graham Norton would be fantastic today. And please bring back all awards into the show! If the Academy thinks it is worth recognising these categories, then they shouldn't be left out of the actual ceremony.

    You know who else laughed first before having a negative reaction? Tom Cruise after some clown sprayed him with water at a movie premiere. I think that there are times where people laugh in uncomfortable situations. I also think that people who regularly attend award shows and special company dinners are predisposed to laugh at the jokes.
    I don't think Will Smith was in the right committing battery against Chris Rock. But it's not like he slapped him at random. I know a lot of people - male, female, and non-binary, that would have done something at a similar level for making fun of someone's illness or disability.

    • @qwertyferix

      Tom Cruise didn't hit the guy, though. He handled it much better by talking through the situation.
      Referring to hair loss as an "illness or disability" is a bit of a stretch. She's not suffering from a debilitating medical condition. It's a minor cosmetic issue that is very common. I'm against making fun of someone's appearance, especially things that are out of their control, but Jada doesn't have it that bad. She has even joked about it herself.

He's definitely in that category of actors to me that always fall just short of Oscar winner level greatness. Like he had no problem channeling the passion needed for a great role but isn't quite as technical as some of the greats. So to finally win and for a personal movie like this but self sabotage your moment is sad. Atleast Chris rock has bragging rights over Ricky Gervais now lol.

    THANK YOU, Dan! If someone who isn't rich, famous and well connected did what he did, he'd spend the night in jail, And the Oscars crowd and showrunners cowardly ignoring what happened is even worse than what he did. The people making excuses for him are nothing but enablers who don't care about criminal behavior when someone they like commits it. Hollywood showed its ugly face that night in every way. And Rock now won't press charges because he's too scared to lose his place in the Hollywood food chain because the ones with power won't act on their own against Smith, the egocentrically holier than thou hypocrite who just committed a criminal act in front of literally the whole world and just continued to pretend like everything he did is normal and that he's above the law or something. That speech he gave about piece love and understanding completely ignoring what he did moments earlies as if he has the right to slap anyone he doesn't like in the face and threaten them just added huge insult to injury. Apparently the first amendment protects comedians from the government but not from Will "I an the law" Smith. This has to have serious repercussions or the message is clear - violence and threats against comedians telling jokes or anyone attending the Oscars is permitted if you're a big enough star to get away with it.
