    I think one of the things that made the night so special was that the four actors who won have all been in the industry for decades (or have left and come back) but none of them had ever won an Oscar until now. It felt like all of the work they've done and the struggles they've been through have finally been acknowledged.

    • @AllTheArtsy
      @AllTheArtsy Год назад +14

      Something that unites a lot of the winners is the implicit expectation that they were never supposed to win-- people of color, women, and/or queer. Even Jaime Lee, a bona fide nepo baby, is a known genre star, not a dramatic Oscar-bait actress. I think that's why it feels like they truly exhibited gratitude and that made the night so much more warm and celebratory.

    • @Crichjo32
      @Crichjo32 Год назад +12

      They're also similar in that they had dropped off the Hollywood scene for some time, especially Ke Huy Quan and Brenda Fraser. Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh had been considered too old. Just shows its never too late for women of a certain age or for people who think they're past their prime to comeback in a big way.

    This was such a wonderful event. People were just so genuinely excited for each other (aside from one moment). From Ariana DeBose crying when she read Ke Huy Quan'sname, to Florence Pugh's excitement during the screenplays, Harrison Ford and Quan sharing the stage, and the EEAAO team just being all about each other.

    Favorite Oscar Ceremony I have seen in quite some time. I was genuinely happy for basically everyone who won. I think the only thing that bothered me was the couple of times they started playing off some of the winners for the "smaller" awards. Those awards might not be in the eye-catching categories, but that moment is a culmination of so much hard work, and they deserve to be able to have their moment.
    I cried for Ke Huy Quan, laughed at Jamie Lee Curtis' infectious enthusiasm, danced for Naatu Naatu, smiled for Brendan Fraser, and cheer my butt off for Michelle Yeoh.

    The best Oscar speech was from the RRR composer who sang a modified Carpenter's song on stage. It was brief, a surprise, memorable, and totally delightful.
    I wasn't surprised that JLC won once she got nominated. She won because of her long history in the industry, her famous parents, and everyone loves her, and not necessarily because of her work in EEAAO.

    • @manningbartlett522
      @manningbartlett522 Год назад +4

      Agreed. I love JLC, but let's be honest - she wasn't even the best supporting actress in her own movie, let alone the entire category.

    • @chazharris
      @chazharris Год назад +6

      @@manningbartlett522 JLC's role in EEAAO represented a role that was so far away from herself, and yet one she managed to show the emotional truth in instead of turning it into a caricature. If you look at the history of Oscar-winning performances, those are the ones that The Academy loves to reward (I loved how Hsu was totally thrilled for her, she'll be winning one in future I have no doubt). Out of everyone in that category, JLC's role represented the biggest departure and risk from who she is and has been as an actor and that's why she won.

    • @matthewbertram4312
      @matthewbertram4312 Год назад +24

      It's a weird situation. Sometimes it's very tough to compare performances as apples to apples and say, "This actor was better in their film than this other one was in theirs." especially when the films can be so different overall. Angela acted the HELL out of her role. But, it was also a highly emotional comic book blockbuster. Which, unfortunately, maybe doesn't get the respect it should at the Academy level. Whereas maybe they looked more favorably on a role that gave a lot of nuance and depth and relatability in the face of pure absurdity.
      My problem comes with trying to argue that Curtis was even the best in her own movie. I think Stephanie Hsu was more integral to the film working at all, let alone HOW well it works. But her lack of success on the award circuit could also be because she was tasked to play 2 separate roles (everyone in that movie played a lot of "roles," but you know what I mean). And as spectacular as she was as the daughter in her scenes, sometimes the villain role was a bit too emotionless and expositiony. Which, again, was the point, but maybe not real award-friendly.
      Either way, it's tough to say Curtis DIDN'T deserve it; it's just going to depend on where your personal opinion lies.

Just the feeling every fan of that movie had cause I was SURE it was going to Banshees (which I would have been super happy with) but as you said, EEAAO is such a unique landmark movie that deserved all the awards it got. I don't know, something about how she performed the song hit different this time.

    Oscars 95 got a lot more right than Oscars ‘95, that’s for sure. Deserving winners, great speeches, genuine emotion…as Dan said, this was a solid night. People won’t be talking about it like last year, but I’ll take solid and satisfying over train wreck any time.
    -EEAAO holding out over all these months I think also really speaks to how the end of the year prestige rush fizzled. Works from previous Oscar favorites (Amsterdam, Babylon, Empire of Light) absolutely cratered financially and critically. As much as The Fabelmans was a smaller movie, a prestige Spielberg movie making less than $50 million still seems shocking. This awards season and show could have felt a lot more staid and less interesting.
    -Angela Bassett’s loss had me going back to how she lost for What’s Love Got to Do With It? And that’s a tough call, as she lost to Holly Hunter in The Piano…it has been a long time since I saw The Piano, so I’m not sure how I feel there. Also, that was a fascinating ceremony. Hunter and Emma Thompson were double nominated, Schindler’s List dominated but Jurassic Park cleaned up technical awards, Malkovich being nominated for In the Line of Fire and Tommy Lee Jones winning for the Fugitive, which feels like a genre that no acting nominations would come from now, Springsteen wins an Oscar and Mrs. Doubtfire wins best makeup over Philadelphia and Schindler’s. What a time!

    I thought this was the best Oscars broadcast in several years. Even though it was just as long as the others, they kept the focus on the awards and kept the other B.S. to a minimum (aside from Disney inserting a trailer premiere). It really shows how the main thing that makes the broadcast feel so long is all the ad breaks. If they could maybe present 3 or 4 awards between ad breaks instead of 1 or 2, and they otherwise followed the model of this year's broadcast, that would be a pretty solid format.
