- ** Mike is back at the main farm and he helping out where he can and today he is loading some trucks.
Now since he's been north building the bin pad up there, he has not been around home very much and that's ok because there hasn't been a lot to do for him 🙂

Mike proceeds to tell me how to run a sweep that I don’t have. In a bin I don’t have and yet I feel like i should go check the hold down screws in my bin floor 😂😂😃😃🤣🤣
Mike. Make some snap in grates. We have them out. As soon as you start sweep you install them. Takes seconds
I accidentally stepped in a gate like that when I was 9 years old. Cut my leg up real bad but thankfully was able to pull myself out before it took off my leg off completely. Couple of plastic surgeries and half a year later I was able to walk again. Be careful out there.
“‘Well Mike what happens if you step in that?’”
“We’ll you’re only gonna do that one time” 😂
About a mile down road from us We had a young man killed n a bin a few years ago. He was a new guy and Somehow got caught in auger. Very said. A few years earlier, on same site, one of the owner’s family was killed in bin accident. Farming is dangerous
One time per foot providing you survive each incident, guy in SD lost chunk of foot in 900,000 bushel bin. Auger, 24 inch diameter has no mercy.
I also know a guy who stepped in a uncovered auger and he lost his leg. Also just happened to know the paramedic and fireman who pulled him out and saved his life. Not a pretty sight. Cover them up once you get in the bin mike, no one plans on having an accident.
We never used a shovel in the bins. Always used brooms to keep up to the sweep auger. Plus we had a rope on all the sweeps so we could hold them back if needed.
that answers my broom vs shovel question - thx!
When I say broom I don’t mean the house kind.
These were very heavy duty and had deep tough bristles. Deeper than a shop broom.
@@va3kbc and you won't have to worry about snagging on a bolt head!
Mike, you're working. Now you've caught my eye. greetings.
Mike çalışıyon sen. şimdi gözüme girdin işte. selam olsun.
Hope next year is better Mike. If not next year, than there is always the year after next. In some ways the short crop was a blessing in disguise. Ashtyn didn't have to work as long and hard as usual and I'm sure even though she doesn't want special treatment, it was more than likely the best thing for her being with child and all. Best of wishes to you Mike and Ashtyn!
I guess it's good you sold the product right away instead of sitting in the bin for very long.
Mike please wear your mask always. I had an aunt who had a larger dairy farm. She had COPD for the last 20 years of her life from the dust from the bales in the barn. My father farmed over 40 years. In his early years not wearing a mask. In his 80's in his last years he needed an inhaler often and had breathing issues!!
Ahoj Mike. Tak tak, úrodu je třeba dobře prodat. I toto je farmaření. Ať se Vám daří. God bless.
Mike, thanks for sharing you day. Love the running commentary and quips.
They should start making sweeps that go around counter clock wise so the very few right handed people kind would have it easier cleaning against the wall.
you got a point there
@@realredditstories420 would need reverse fighting to work properly.
It's amazing how much farming one man can do. Each of you guys does so much!
Hey from Illinois Mike! Have you considered doing an interview with your dad about the history of your family farm? I gather he isn't pumped about being video taped, maybe he'd go for it to talk some history though?
Stay safe up there man!!
Nice to see a man easily shovelling both left and right hand.
That's the only way to do it! I make a point to lead with both my right and left when shoveling even though I'm right handed. Same with swinging a hammer and using my impact drivers and Sawzall, ratchets, wrenches, screw drivers and pliers. Although sometimes you can only get into certain places with one hand or the other, for the most part I switch it up. Now circular saws, chainsaws and most other saws I only use my dominant hand because they're set up for right handed use and it's a safety thing. I also drive with mostly my nondominant hand too because so many other things only get done with my dominant side. I even use eating utensils with both my left and right. Do half with one side then the other half with the other.
I use a hard plastic snow shovel and a broom in my bins. Too much work with a scoop shovel. Lol
I took all my grates out after canola pods covered mine up. I close the front one and middle up by the door until the sweep gets to the end. My bins are just little guys to what yours are .... 25k 🤣
Mike I always liked using a big broom instead of using a scoop because of the screws that come loose from the sweep auger.
A piece of advice.........when you get a good crop next year it be an idea to try and keep a bin or two of wheat in case of drought. That's your best bank account in the grain business when crops turn up short
Hello Mike big silos 🌾😲🤞🇮🇹
Great video Mike
battery powered leaf blower works great to clean bins
Talk to your springland dealer. They have well guards that bolt on the sweep. Keeps the sump from plugging.
Yeah man that dust and the sounds will get to ya. Always wear the right protection!
Hi Mike Again a good video it's a great pleasure to see them I've seen them all and waiting every day for a new thank you for making them
That Pete in the beginning is a nice rig. He's got a decent size sleeper on it too. 👍👊
It's a W9 Kenworth but yeah looks pretty good. I'm surprised he is able to get away with tint on the windows.
Afternoon
Lol Mike the blue mask u just made my day..
I like them belts instead. They really quiet and move alot
Hi Mike:
This year, in some areas, harvest was a disaster. You mentioned that you barley got your seed back. Do you have a special bins for seed?
Best Wishes, AND GOD BLESS OUR FARMERS!
Gary
Some places it was bad, some places it was good and some places it was average. That's how our planet and its weather works. That how it's always been, thats how it is now and it's how it always will be...
I am sure Mike would much rather need to have more crop require more help to load trucks. It was a terribly weak crop year.
Morning
Mike. While every season starts with thousands of acres, horsepower and litres of fuel, a hard year can come down to a man with a shovel and every grain making a difference!
@5:00 beautiful perspective...
Can you do more videos on the dirt hauling please I find it really satisfying
Why don’t you like the window in the trailer side just wondering
0:03 that's my husband and me!!! 😝 thanks Mike you got my sister texting me non stop saying that we in the video!!😊
Awesome!
What is your profile picture?
Where? I don't see any people in the video, just am all white truck.
Your both not in the picture.quit fibbing
I saw some people use a leaf blower look like it worked good but may make more dust
You should take that fender on the drive wheel on the sweep
Conventional augers can also run smooth and quiet if the company chooses to build and balance them properly. We bought our first Westfield in 1985 and it was remarkably quiet. Also have an old Sudega that is very quiet. After I bought my first 13x71 swing hopper, I got a call from the big boss at Westfield asking how I liked my new augers. told him they sure bang, shake, and rattle compared to those early models. He must have gotten similar input elsewhere because the new ones are quite a bit better, not what they should be tho.
They don't build them as heavy as they used to. That's one of the main reasons they're so loud now. Everything now is "engineered" to use the least amount of material to build it to get just enough strength to do what it is designed to do. Thicker material is better at dampening noise where as thinner material clearly isn't as good as keeping the noise down. It's a shame really because everything is build so cheap now a days and doesn't last nearly as long as it should if it was just built a little heavy. All that "saving" material to be more efficient is only for profit and not being resource conscious. If they really cared, theys build things heavier so they laster longer and didn't have to create more waste and pollution by making more and more little cheap flimsy built ones. It's in everything now a days.
@@mikeznel6048 Proper balancing and the correct flighting pitch make a big difference in how smooth they run especially with no hanger bearings. And yes their built "cheap" now. That 8" 85 model was over a million bushels before it wore through.
Would it be nice if they made a sweep auger that could clean down to the floor. Maybe a secondary brush or something.
How many bushels will that bin hold. It’s huge.
Why don't the silos have a funnel shaped bottom? That would make the emptying much easier...
For large bins you lose a lot of capacity and it would be very expensive to put a cone floor on a 48" bin.
Intereating video, more like this 😀
now there's a proper trailer a SUPER-B, not like that B-Train from earlier.
How about insulating the exterior of the bin to eliminate condensation/moisture!!???
You might consider dropping the level of the next group of bins maybe ten feet. It would require a short ramp between the two levels but reduce the fill requires immensely. Just saying,,,,
Could the perimeter floor pieces be riveted into place so as to have a smoother surface to minimize the chances of the grain shovel catching on something ?
I can appreciate the initial installation would take a little longer to put in rivets rather than self tapping screws but in the long run it may be worth it as well as doubtful rivets would work loose.
I wish lol.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND better hearing protection to minimize chances of requiring hearing aids in the future. 👂🎧
Yes ear protection is a must have around diesels.
Ear protection is one of the most important tool for a farmer...... atleast for me
Around farms in general lol
WHAT?
Nice shorts
Your f****n awesome
All is well until the sweep auger breaks down and you have to shovel a semi load into the floor sump…. NEVER want to do that again!
How do you know how much was loaded on to the truck? Does the truck driver have to sign a bill of lading? I suppose there is an office somewhere on the farm that handles all the paperwork and ensures you get paid for the load etc.. Could you give us a tour some day?
Mate use a leafblower for the bin!!! My eyes are bleeding if I see you with a spade
Mike, why was the outer bin floor steel over lapped in the wrong direction? If installed in a counter clockwise direct the sweep can't catch on the edge of the floor. There was one bent already
No it was installed properly. The sweep was going clockwise looking down at it and the edges of the floor are exposed behind the forward direction of the sweep.
If you step in one of those open holes.... .you'd have to change your name to Eileen....bwhahaha 🤣
dude for someone that is worth millions and millions and one of the biggest farmers in the world, you work way way way to hard
How many family member are involved in the farm.
Hey Mike!! Do you, your Brothers and your dad all keep your fields, equipment, workers and inputs a grain sales separate?
Absolutely
Can those joiners be installed on the under side of the panels? I know a self tapper would have to be swapped out for some pan head machine screws.
My bro inlaw lost his leg in that 6 yrs ago , what works real good instead of a sweeper is a battery powered blower , ... gotta wear a mask though ,,... as if we arnt doing enough of that nowadays, 😉 😜
Mike, what about this very Dangerous thing right here?
Well if you noticed it, it's not very dangerous is it?
Get yourself a stilh br600 leaf blower. Sort that out in 10 seconds.
Have you tried a leaf blower on the bin floor?
Do you blow them out when empty?
How many of ur total bins did u fill up mike??
So how many acres of crop were in that bin?
Would a push broom work better than a shovel?
Push broom would work good after the bulk of the grain is cleaned up. Push brooms don't move large amounts very well.
Was that your only load of grain?
Since you didn’t have any moisture last year on the crops is them going to be any good for seed
The seed labs determine that.
That U Trough auger works pretty slick. How are they priced compared to a conventional auger?
Almost double
You´d think a floor that´s holding metric ass tons of grain up would be held together by something else than selftapping screws, but nope...
The screw are only holding the flashing that seals the gap between the floor and the bin walls.
What's your opinion on conveyors vs conventional augers? Hear they dont like pulses.
I saw on TikTok guys used a leaf blower less shoveling lol
More just tho, I try to make the least amount of dust possible
@@mikemitchell2554 Seems so many people are afraid of other people doing work.
@@mikemitchell2554 probably lol great videos !!
Why do you not like view ports in the maximum trailers?
That just tells the department of transportation: "hey, look how full I am! Are you going to do something about that?" 😆
@@mikemitchell2554 OK thanks Mike! I hope next year is a bumper crop!
Hi Mike. Have you sold all of the chick peas from the previous year?
On average how much do they pay for a trailer load of deem?
The guys who designed those bins should be made to come and shovel in them. I'll bet the problem of protruding screw heads would be solved lickattee-split.
It's the drive wheel on the end of the auger that works them loose. It tracks right over where the screws are and the constant rotation of the clean out auger drive wheel works them loose.
Would a leaf blower work to clean up the final grain left on the floor?
Too much dust but I tried it
How many tons wheat get in this truck + trailer?
Who is the supplier of your bins Mike?
Grain bin volume vs. wall area:
If the height is 1/2 the diameter, then the volume is maximized with the minimum wall area....hold the most volume with the least amount of wall materials. Looks like the bins follow the math.
That doesn't really matter though at the end of the day because let's say you have a 60 foot round bin that's 30 feet tall holds x volume. A 60 foot round bin at 60 foot high will hold double the volume of the first bin. That's kind of pointless math and proves nothing. Maybe if you were to bring in structure and strength into the equation it would make sense that a bin half as tall as it is wide would be stronger when loaded than a bin that is as tall as it is wide. Realistically, a bin that's as tall as it is wide is going to hold more than a bin half as tall as it is wide... A bin that is as tall as it is wide will also maximizes building materials too as a tall bin that's just as wide will use less material to build than 2 shorter bins...
How much does one of those shiny grain bins cost please?
$20 organic spring wheat thank god
Good price 👍. I assume from your comments that your crops weren't the best this year. In what area do you farm?
@@jameshill4900 no im just south of Mitchell farm in Montana
@@Scott-gt6od Thanks for the response. Heard it was fairly dry out that way as well? Glad price helped offset yield a bit.
Electric leafblower > shovel
Dust.. I don't likely dust
I’d like to know how cheap the elevators got truckers running for these days
Bills have to be paid so you can spend more money
Gotta spend money to make money. No way around it. Unless of course you're spending somebody else's money to make you money.
It makes me incredibly nervous watching you kick that sweep, with a shoe that has laces... sure youd probably need some extra bad luck to have either the proplusion gear or the flighting grab a loose lace, but its not too far fetched of a thing to happen. Would only take a lace coming undone, and you not realizing it until you already began the motion of putting your foot on the sweep for either of those rotating assemblies to grab a lace and yank your foot in. Could be yikes-er-ific
Shouldn’t you be using that drum for next years seed
😷😷😷😷😷 Please comply , VIRUS in the bin
Nice to be making money and not spending it.
Mike why sell at the bins? Ibwould have thought you would haul yourself? Have you laid off drivers because of the poor harvest?
Drivers are busy moving that 150,000 ish yards of dirt 😆
