- How Mother Gothel’s OWN MOM Turned Her Into Such A Wicked Villain | Disney Tangled
Disney’s depiction of Mother Gothel in Tangled was nothing short of iconic and displayed the truly sinister mind behind an evil mother whose need to control everything surely stemmed from childhood trauma. And after reading the fifth installment of Serena Valentino’s “Villains” series, it’s clear exactly what that trauma was and why Gothel was so determined to keep Rapunzel and her powers away from the rest of the world. It turns out Rapunzel wasn’t the only child with an evil mother figure growing up, and at the end of the day what Gothel went through could easily be considered darker than anything that Rapunzel went through in Tangled.

Revealed in Tangled the Series, Gothel also had a daughter (Casandra)she abandoned when she kidnapped Repunzel.
In the book it never said she had a daughter ( Cassandra) the ppl who made tangled the series just added that just to make the show more juicy
@@Mariselaismybaby_1exactly nth in that series is canon
@@Mariselaismybaby_1that must have been retconned
We also meet other characters such as lance , adira , and Eugene’s dad , King Edmund and Eugene also finds out he was a prince
@@maliwatchesyt it's actually a really good story, if you can get past filler episodes, also every thing in the series is canon and was supposed to be a Tangled 2 but they changed it into a series and had huge amounts of people work on it so it's not some dumb silly childrens show, it actually gives a lot of lore
I knew Gothel had more powers after watching the series. But that much power could turn someone insane. It drove her mother into a crazy witch. Like mother like daughter. It only makes sense. Great video!
I knew Gothel had more powers after watching the series. But that much power could turn someone insane. It drove her
Mother Gothel's story also continues in the sixth book in the Disney Villains book series, The Odd Sisters: A Villains Novel by Serena Valentino. And needless to say, it gets very, very trippy. No spoilers, though. You will just have to read it for yourself. 📕🤯

and it goes on with primrose and hazel in the newest installment to the series: never never.
Soo were just glossing over when Gothel had her own bio daughter Cassandra that she abandoned in order to escape with the kidnapped Repunzel?
Sounds like it. Feels like this is just an attempt to humanize a villain. Poor unfortunate souls did a good job with Ursula's take though
Some other commenter said that the people who made tangle the series just added that in to make it juicy
@@ichigokurosaki8523 but it would still be considered cannon no? Since it came from the Disney industry and the show is making money and Disney hasn't disputed Gothels past?
@@neomehollow1391the series isn't canon it was added for entertainment purposes
@@maliwatchesyt how can they do that, make money on it and not get sued?
its no wonder gothel neglected her daughter cassandra she felt so alone and hr mother hated her and her sisters i feel bad for her now i had no idea how sad her past was
You shouldnt.
I agree
But after what she has done it does not make sense
@@melaniebowra7769 sometimes children become the monsters they didn’t want to become. It’s rare but it happens
She does have a point but know that you dont have to treat others the way she did.
Does the book ever cover her having a daughter? or does it ignore that? Because I feel like a crucial component of Mother Gothel's backstory after Tangle: The Series is her having a daughter named Cassandra who she ends up abandoning after Rapunzel is born, because of the flower's powers. If this is indeed a canon backstory, at least we know the identity of Cassandra's father, because it sounds like the only close contact she had with a male was Jacob, her mother's loyal subject.
I believe that Gothel was written to have a daughter after the book was released
@@GranZaddy You're right since the book released first in 2018, which I didn't know and 2019 the episode was released, meaning we got two backstories for her, unless you want to merge both, because we do get some interesting tidbits about who could possibly be Cass's father.
Jacob is a family friend and the father of Lucinda ruby and Martha and technically father of gothel.. so idk abt that. But if they did say she had a daughter .. she would have been in the book.. but clearly she is. Not so I’m guessing they just added that in the show just to make it more and more interesting
The series isn't canon, I think the writers just had fun with it for entertainment
@@maliwatchesyt that’s why I’m trying to say .
All of this contradicts the show. In the show she was a vain sorceress who ended up with Cassandra as a child and use mirrors as journals and was possibly a deciple of vahn tiri
All of this contradicts the show. In the show she was a vain sorceress who ended up with Cassandra as a child and use
The show isn't canon for all I know
@@Citron_Lynx The show is more canon than this novel.
It's called the Sundrop Flower, not the Rapunzel Flower.
Is it too much to get the proper names for these things?
honestly? im surprised she hadnt been worse in tangled. and yes there are worse things than locking rapunzel up for 16 year with enough meals and entertainment, she even got a hobby and a pet. im not saying its good because it isnt, its still worng but considering everything that happened in the book, gothel didnt turn out as bad as she could have become
The song Mother knows best, I see it in a whole different light now. I loved it before, but now feel sad for her, cause all the things she talks about in that song she's probably seen it or experienced then in some form or another. I was rooting for her in the movie, but now I feel for her 😶😭💔
Even though it doesn’t mention Cass the show is still canon either way. This isn’t the first time a book from this series contradicted the material of other content such as the movies.
There’s also a different backstory for her in once upon a time that is really good an interesting.
oooo
So what this tells me is that Jacob is likely the father of Cassandra
I think Gothel was over 1,000 years old
Yeah, all the comments demand to know how Cassandra fits into Valentino’s Gothel Story. Did Jacob and Gothel hook up and got down to business?
that would make sense... hm
Where was the part about when Gothel became Demanitus's pupil to Zhan Tiri's?
If you recall back to tangled the series, three women who were demantus's disciples who betrayed him look awfully like gothel and her sisters so if the show is canon it means the book is at least half or actually canon.
I'm proud of gothel for at least not raising Cassandra and Rapunzel the way her mother raised her, if she were alive she would've been the best antihero
So she's not a complete lost cause?
Tromus aka Mr Matthews was a man.
Seriously?
Absolutely it he does explain her wickedness.
This actually matches up with Rapunzel the TV series from Disney channel.
I’m wondering if Jacob is Cassandra’s father as we never learn who her true father is in the series. 🤔
Having read the book: No, Jacob's the father of Lucinda, Ruby and Martha, he'd be her great great grandfather
The odd sisters are Disney the equivalent of the Gorgon sisters
I'm honestly not a fan of redeeming villains, especially long after the fact. The things she went through also don't excuse her actions in any way. Abuse doesn't excuse abuse. I have no sympathy for her.
Well you’re right, it doesn’t excuse, but it sometimes explains
It's ok to have empathy for all people, including villains, and still punish the people from doing crimes and reform them.
Well, the flower was hers.
The powers were stolen by the king. Yes not princesses, but it was gothels.
And It was stolen from her.
@@ismata3274yea and even then she at first attempt was to only take some of her hair. Unfortunately that didn’t work
I always thought Gothel was obsessed with the flower because of her ego and wanting to keep her looks.
What's wrong with a villain who is vain, egotistical, narcissistic, without "trauma" or "tragic backstory" ?
Bc no one is inherently evil. That’s just how the mind works hehe..
@@terrelcosmeticssubliminals3112 serial killers would beg to differ lol
Narcissism and narcissistic traits are typically the result of the environment you were raised in. That or a person's genetics. That's just how narcissism scientifically works when you actually look into it.
I agree not all fictional villains need to be written realistically and some should be able to villainous just to be villainous because they want to but, for some people it's not something they enjoy. Therefore they'll look for stories with villains that are realistic. Nothing wrong a villain whose a villain just because but, there's also nothing wrong with a villain with trauma.
And you KNOW they never grew from their judgemental selves bc when they were giving aurora a gift they gave her beauty, like... There was a chance she was gonna be beautiful but they HAD to make it definite instead of accepting she could just be loved the way she is
I think I like the series backstory better. Like she trained under the evil lord and the sun drop and moon drop exist.
Do you think the Tomb Blooms from Maleficent 2 have anything to do in this story?
But what about her real daughter?
What I say about this is Mother Gothel made a choice to be bad! Not everybody that has had atraumatic childhood grows to be a bad person. It's a choice!!!
I need to read these books 😧
I just had an insane thought - what if Jacob is Cassandra's father?
If you were to fit the origin story to the Movie and Series, it could make sense
Hm interesting. Yet in the tangled movie and series, I haven’t seen any evidence that shows gothel even cared about anyone other than herself. But maybe coffins might have been a bit on the nose
so I guess "mother knows best" isn't cannon to the Tangled franchise then? or is it the Tangled TV show that isn't cannon because they have contradiction oranges to the sun drop flower.
GREAT INTERESTING VIDEO 😊❤😊
what a life
I loved Mother Knows Best! And all the other ones too.
Mother Gothel fell of the tower! Hope it doesn't happened to my mother but we have no tower in our house because by... Disneyland? I don't know but I like Disney too.
Don’t care. She abandoned one child and abused another. I’m not gonna empathize with her.
I guess Jacob is Cassandra's birth father I was hoping to get answer to that question
You realize this directly contradicts some points in the actual movie right? But off course you’ll only want to upvote comments that talk about how great you are, and not comments who are looking to open a discussion about the videos
Yeah, this is clearly not canon. LOL

/: so why didnt shejust summon army to search for Ugine or.. Just over throw the kingdom.. O.. Wait rite... All beuty no brains
Her backstory is kinda "eh???" To me tbh, if she is so powerful and has magic why not use her magic to defeat flynn and seal Rapunzel away? and is more "eh???" To me of her having abandonment issue bcuz she has a daughter in the tangled series which she abandoned and idk what excuse she has just to abandon her
You say explain, but earlier one you said how she idolize her mother, just saying
I love mother knows best best book I think tangled the series is not canon I don’t think does has canon. Like we get to choose what is canon and what is not

i can't say any thing right!😑
As much as everyone is trying to make gothel to be the one in the wrong.
Maybe she didn't go about it the right way I'll definitely say that but mother gothel wasn't in the wrong.
What if mother gothel is related to the Royal family but no one spoke of her.
Did Rapunzel have a grandma that she didn't know she had?
Is mother gothel Rapunzel's grandmother? Was Rapunzel kept away from her grandmother? And forbidden never to know anything about her grandmother.
And one question remains who is really the true villain of Disney's Tangled?
um Gothel locked Rapunzel up in a tower for 18 years. She gas lighted Rapunzel for 18 years.
You cant excuse her actions. Gothel is in the wrong. Even if you have a horrible life and was treated horrdily, you still have a choice on how u act. You still have to be held responible to your actions
I love the villain series so much and i love this story!!
