It is just another tragedy that Jules was never bigger than he deserved. This album is a gem...lost to time. Thanks for the upload. If only society "knew what they want".
I realize I’m a little late to this party but one of my favorite albums is “Walking A Changing Line (The Songs Of Jules Shear)” it just shows the brilliance of this man’s writing.
He was a very good song writer - just others took his tunes in remakes and made them into huge hits. This of course was done a year later (1986, this was in 1985) by the Bangles. It is the exact same song by them made into a top 40 hit.
Great tune, great writer/singer. Watch Dog is in my "very personal list" of greatest rock albums. this album is good too, but WD is just stunning, a revelation....
The bangles version is very good ! Jules is the original though ! First time I heard his versions today ! Very nice ! I wonder who are doing the back vocals on this 85 recording ?
I love this song, but seriously the Bangles are the best thing to ever happen to this guy. The background vocalists sound like robots. I love it in the first person though, a man needs to cover it.
I'm sure he enjoyed the royalty checks... but The Bangles would be nothing without others providing the material... (He also wrote All Through the Night, which Cyndi Lauper had a hit with.) All of the Bangles hits were written by others... Hoffs co-wrote a few things with other people (professional songwriters), but I get the impression the other songwriters did most of the heavy lifting.
@@rangepuppies The Bangles would be nothing... Jules would be nothing... Who knows? I wouldn't know Jules if it wasn't for the Bangles. In fact, this original version, never was a hit... Listen to the first Bangles album (All over the place) and tell me they couldn't write a good song.
Do you also own Watch Dog? I got musical whiplash when I first heard it, because Jules's singing style was so much calmer and less piercing. Particularly, the first song "Whispering Your Name", begins with a very LOW-pitched melody, though it gradually works its way up and has great falsetto harmonies in the chorus. I paid $80-something for a copy of the Japanese CD of Watch Dog. If it's a bootleg, it's the best damn forgery I ever saw. Sounds every bit as good as the vinyl, if not better!
No they are cheesy. However, it's still a great song and Jules is an outstanding songwriter. Jules doing this live on MTV unplugged is more low key, but captures the emotion of the lyrics in a way that this version doesn't. Also, the Bangles remake smokes this version for pure pop goodness.
O impressionante é que na voz dele ñ fez sucesso,i na versão das the Bangles fez, parece mesmo marcação contra o artista, porque tanto faz ele como as Bangles estão perfeito
The Eternal Return was the first Jules Shear album I bought, after listening to (Cars guitarist) Elliot Easton's album Change No Change, which was comprised of Easton's collaborations with Jules. So, technically, this was the first solo Jules Shear song I ever heard. Side One was flawless, whereas Side Two was merely awesome. I listened to this song and the album so often, there was no way I was ever gonna be interested in the Bangles version! And - no surprise at all - it really wasn't as good.
I've always found this version brighter, more upbeat, sweeter, and generally more exciting than that other group's cover. It just plain sounds better, to me. The cover version sounds kinda listless and lazy, too "laid back". This one is crash-bam-boom exciting! More importantly, being sung by THE GUY makes it *personal* - a love song! A woman singing "He'd be giving it to her" just makes me wonder, "And why are YOU singing about it?"
The difference between this version and the much better known version by the Bangles is very telling. The change from first person to third person narrator exposes a lot about the male/female dynamic. Especially now, since the imminent illegalization of abortion brings further burdens onto women. They have always had more to lose in a committed relationship. Even more, now.
Very beautiful song produced like *shit* - what the hell is wrong with the snare randomly overdubbed with an explosion? Bangles' version brought the song where it belongs, among pop music jewels.
Genius song but awful production: sounds like someone dubbed the background vocals of the Bangles version but out of sync, and those 80’s drums are vomittous.
One of my favorite songs by the genius writer Jules Shear- but this production is ghastly!! What is up with that piece of crap snare- totally unlistenable.
Jules Shear is an absolute genius. One of the all time great songwriters.
It's amazing how a little difference like third person vs first person can make the exact same song either a fun bop or just absolutely devastating

I don't blame the Bangles for picking this one to cover - it's a story many guys relate to.

In my Bangles playlist with his demo (which sounds better, IMHO) and their cover. Thanks for the upload!
Suits Hoff's so much I thought she wrote it wonderful song
So did I for years but like you I dug a bit deeper.
You guys can't read credits on records?
Makes you wonder what else is on the Bangles mp3 player
I am here because a book I’m reading mentioned about this song. :)
BL Chiew Cool. which book?
refusetoburnout the first phone call from heaven by mitch albom

Great !
Shear was crazy for this girl... and me, crazy for his song : just logical !

Awesome!
I know Jules wrote the song, and this is good, but I like the Bangles version better.

Interesting. Why are his vocals so muffled?
Sounds a bit like Tom Petty at times...
Was thinking more Don Henley from my ears

Wow.. great song. He sounds really uncomfortable.. like he is holding back a cough.
Maybe that's why Bangles covered it
He wrote it, he can do it how he wants. 🙂

Yes, definitely. It's much more personal being sung in the first person than in the third person.

Bad take. The bangles version crushes this. The production on this is foul and the background vocals are plain bad.

Lol yeah gated reverb gone overboard...

Is he knew that she knows what she wants. He would give it to her.
He also wrote for Cyndi Lauper.
And Til Tuesday.. great songwriter
The Bangles do the best version in my opinion.
Jules sounds great on the lead vocal. But the background singers ruin the song.
Sounds like the Beatles, do you love me?
Este tema es mejor cuando lo interpreta bangles
lol he sounds like hes trying really hard to push out a poop.
Not bad
Genius song but awful production: sounds like someone dubbed the background vocals of the Bangles version but out of sync, and those 80’s drums are vomittous.
This is a fair assessment. His vocal is nice enough though....
I guess the Bangles got more money and facilities in produciton
One of my favorite songs by the genius writer Jules Shear- but this production is ghastly!! What is up with that piece of crap snare- totally unlistenable.
me gusta mas la canción original de The Bangles
Y a nadie no se importa nada.
This is OK but the bangles cover is clearly better
