  • Ridge Racer 64 is a racing game developed by Nintendo Software Technology for the Nintendo 64 in 2000. It features tracks from Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution and its very own set of desert tracks exclusive to the Nintendo 64, called Renegade. Variations on these tracks make for a total of 20 tracks in the game

    There is a funny story behind this game growing up. My friend rented this game and told me how fun it was. However the only reason he rented the game because not only did he love racing games, but because of Reiko Nagase on the box art lol. Either way the marketing worked and is a fun racing game.

      also the Z class trophies legit are pain in the ass, specially Stage 1 race 2 and Stage 4 race 1 (with the huge demand to be absolutely perfect), like how AI is on rails, you barely can make drift and jump at the same time perfectly XD

    I disagree that RR64 saw a slight graphical downgrade compared to the Playstation versions, it looks much better than RR1 and Revolution (RR64 was based on the earlier arcade games).
    The bright graphics in earlier games differ from the graphics in later RR games on PS1 which were more realistic looking.

    I prefer an arcade racer because I can learn how to play it without two or more years of driving school,training,or whatever. If my video games are too realistic,they become unenjoyable. I mean,if you're going to be THAT realistic,I might as well go out and do the real thing,y'know?

    It doesn't have the awesome cd quality soundtrack of the PS1 port, but overall it looks and plays much smoother on the 64. It always bugged me also that there's three of the same track on all variations of the game. Although in an arcade, that makes sense, on console it's too limited.

    I enjoyed this game because of the gameplay and the music. That graphics were kinda crap but the game draws all of your concentration and it always makes me sweat. The drifting is so satisfying-- you don't get a sense of it from watching a video, you have to feel it. It's one of those games I have to stand up when I play. You can play it for 5 minutes and have a good time-- can't say that for a lot of new age games.

    [5 years after this review]
    I bought the game not long ago and gave it a try today. The game is good even though the tracks are rather on the down side as said in the review.
    Still the game has something addictive to it. I can help but compare it to Sega Rally on the Saturn. Both games have this pseudo-realistic and arcade feel to it.
    Controls in RR64 are a bit hard to master I feel. I haven't tried all the cars yet though. I even haven't unlocked them all yet !
    This review of the game is good and points pros and cons honestly.

    Having played RR Type-4 before this one I can actually see what they were trying to do here. To reduce the Polygon count for a better framerate was actually a good move, but the lack of tracks was the real letdown to me. I love Ridge Racer especially 1 and 2. Ridge Racer 64 looks like a fun and exciting game that unfortunately isn't talked about a lot compared to other N64 games. I have never even seen it in stores or gaming conventions and I thought It was only on arcades and PlayStation due to the lack of it showing up or being advertised on other consoles from what I remember. It also looks like it has a amazing multiplayer mode. Cool video. ^_^

    Nintendo really shoulda just had the expansion pack be the main pack, right outta the gate. 4MB of RAM or whatever it was just did NOT cut it for the longevity of the system, especially if it meant that cutbacks had to be made for games as far in as 2000.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  2 года назад +1

      You could say the same for the Saturn….it was a way to keep the console cost as low as possible to appeal to the widest market. The price difference now doesn’t sound much but back then it was more etc

    the reason why I love arcade racers is becoz there fun for one and there so unrealistic that u dont need to worry about understanding a car in a arcade racer all u have to think of is which car has best horsepower and thats it no need to tune or upgrade like most normal racers and if anything like ridge racer its just a bonkers drift racing game :)

    For first time N64 -developers, amazing speed + handling. But i think that roads are too narrow as there are 12 cars on screen as opposed to 8 on Type 4. So, overtaking get`s annoyning. Last 2 track in RR64 are new tracks, so there are like 5 + variations. 3DS -version is actually great also, but too many menus.

    I completely disagree that the visuals was a downgrade from the PS1 Ridge Racer titles. If anything, it looks like an early Dreamcast title despite everything being low poly.
    As for the sound, most of the engines in the game sound like city transit buses. But the soundtrack is top notch.
    Overall, it's a stellar entry in the series.

    This is not a patch on Type 4, apart from its soundtrack which I prefer. But the depth of gameplay isn't up there I don't think. It definitely beats Rage Racer though (which although I think its soundtrack matches RR64, the game just didn't have the depth/lifespan).

    I think the appeal of arcade racers is bells and whistles over depth. A perfect example would be Split/Second. Stupid as all get-out, but really fun to play. I don't want to have to grind tracks repeatedly to get the car I want.. I just want to GO.

    First, time playing this title on the N64 seeing as I never own a N64 and Ridge Racer Type 4 was my first in the series. It was difficult getting use to the drift mechanics becomes easy after awhile. My only gripe w/the game is when you hit a car from behind or when you get push aside by the COM car. That frustrated the hell outta me but game is pretty solid.

    Ridge Racer is the only series I know where the controls seem to radically change with almost every single game--and then there's this one, with enough control options that it even manages not to handle like itself. 😉

    Every time I hear Namco mentioned, I instantly feel the need to play one of the Pac-Man platformers. So...I may or may not have been playing Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures (Wii U) while watching this (I'm surprised I didn't play Pac-Man World 2). XD
    Very good review, I might try to pick up this game if I come across it.

    I think people play Arcade Racers more than other racing-type games like Adventures (such as Test Drive Unlimited) and Simulators (such as Forza or Gran Turismo) because those games have a more "Professional" feel to them, and some people just aren't that committed to the racing life as much as others, like myself. I think some people just like the fast-paces, short-timed racing experience that's both a thrill and not too difficult to complete. Much like the reason some people prefer fast-paces Shooting games like Halo or Call Of Duty rather than the more slow-paced and "realistic" types like Battlefield or SOCOM. Some people just aren't committed to the whole "This is a second life" type deal with those games, and others do. Some people want only a very fast experience with no slow-down time to enjoy the scenery, when others do. And it's usually the lot who prefer a fast-paced short-timed experience rather than a lifelike experience, which is a sad thing, but that's just how it is.

    It's a good game and still fun to play now and then. The only Ridge Racer game I really like much better(haven't played the new ones on PS3, etc) is Type 4 for the PS1.
    I love arcade racers, racing sims like Test Drive Le Mans, Gran Turismo, etc are good for a while but I get bored with them easily(also I'm not very good at them).

    Why people like more arcade racers than simulators? Answer is not easy, but in my opinion simulators are ambiguous experience. All illusion of reality vanishes with the first crash or interaction with enviroment. Than you are left just with some car porn and if the game is fun - in arcade sense - it defends itself. Arcade racers usually delivers what is most important - fun and sense of speed. Who thought that Yaris Sunday Cup in Gran Turismo was a good idea?

      @ well that’s your opinion but the thing your missing is it doesn’t feel anything like a rr game and the music is terrible and not a patch on any of the ps1 games everything else about it is just average imo, definitely lacks that rr feeling so I don’t know how you can say it’s superior when it doesn’t even feel like rr

    Wow - this looks like a bit of a gem on the N64. Ok the track count is down but I don't think I saw a single piece of pop-up in that video. Very impressive. Looks to run fast too. I'm squarely in the school of arcade racing. Cannot be bothered with po-faced so-called simulations. Gran Turismo sent me to sleep as it forced me to do driving tests etc. before getting to the good stuff - sounds too much like work. Gaming for me is about escapism - so daft drift mechanics, unrealistic collision physics and ludicrous sense of speed is what I look for. Also love a game with good solid TT mode. Back in the day I just assumed this was a lazy port that wouldn't have performed well re speed etc. Think I'll pick this one up.

      ***** thank you for your quick response ! If it's true then I'm really happy to hear this. I really Like your reviews but I personally miss in those reviews where games have multiplayer support you don't show this mode in action. I know it's bad when you are just one single person but I think I and others are curious about how the multiplayer mode in certain games look like. Maybe there is a graphical degradation or the drawing distance Is bad something like that. I hope you got the point I am talking about because I don't know if I made it that clear =D poor me

    Arcade racers provide that quick thrill and are fun to play.
    The so called fully fleshed out experiences are simulations supposedly to do with realism.
    I like my quick play level structure that allows for quick gratification.
    These days you have to go through like 20 menu's before you even get into the game and then you have to play with a slow car and earn money to progress before you can even start to play properly with a half decent vehicle.
    The Arcade experience provides that quick thrill a fast car and exciting courses with bright colours and the handling can be unique as per games like FZERO vs a game like Ridge Racer or Sega Rally.
    In the simulation type the aim will be to make it realistic and simulation types were never my favourite back in the day and they still aren't.
    But the mainstream gamers have shifted to like everything realistic and it's a measure of how good the graphics are.
    To me good frame rates bright colours and flashy effects are enough for me say graphics are good and as graphics 3d graphics and physics are already at a really high standard realism in a game does nothing extra for me.
    I actually prefer older style graphics these days.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  10 лет назад

      ***** personally i think arcade racers have died out because a lot of devs sell them for a full rrp and you get more bang for your buck with sim type racers

    • @WWammyy
      @WWammyy 10 лет назад +1

      Yeah the expectations of consumers have increased they want more for their money. I remember reading somewhere "it's just an arcade title" For me it when I was growing up it wasn't just an arcade title it was something special to have a 3000 pounds Arcade ported you've played at home where you paid many pounds or 10 pence a go you could finally play any unlimited amount of times. They games were designed to be addictive. While the perception has changed because the new generation hasn't grown up with Arcades being at the forefront of gaming my heart still lies there and gaming hasn't moved much beyond that for me in terms of the games I'd still rather play
