I don't think I played the first Ridge Racer, but Ridge Racer Type 4 on PS1 was mind blowing. I absolutely loved it.
One of the things Nintendo did in developing this version was to overclock the drift so you can actually corner and drift while doing 360 spins. It’s really fun when you pull it off. Made it hard for me to do 1st person view as a result though.
I recall doing that in RR on the PSOne. It was always the way I would cross the finish haha.
Everyone who loves ridge racer should own every ridge racer game
Oh my! This is just like Ridge Racer DS! The start up and music! Everything! I had no idea that RRDS was a port of this game. Now I know.

Loved this game. Had it when I was kid. As an adult I bought the cart again. lol. Now I’ll play it on switch online. One of the best racers on N64

Very welcome surprise when I saw the announcement. Been playing the last couple days and rediscovering this game. It's one that never ended up in my physical collection.

At the time I didn't have Ridge Racer 64, but I played a lot of Top Gear Rally and MRC on the Nintendo 64.
Those games are awesome!

You mean RR Type 4, different game!! While I have a lot of respect for RR64, Type 4 is the GOAT. Still play it on Vita and PS5 🏁

I thought there was something wrong with this game, and it’s when you turn right, the right hand side suspension compresses.
In real life, the weight goes to the outside and compresses the left side!
I remember spending 70 plus hours playing this game..... When I was little now am I 33 years old... My older brother played it before I did... I want to watch some play it for hours and learn the game... Remember it released which was released on the 22nd I believe..... For all the years of playing ridge racer " I think it was released on Valentine's Day " I'm happy to see the game come back.... I wish they had a physical copy for the Nintendo switch thank you sir for this video 💯🥇 cheers 🥂 PS

until this day, i have no idea, no clue, on why RAVE RACER : PROJECT RIDGE RACER 2 is still an arcade exclusive game. I spent a small fortune playing it, that damn game was 4 tokens in the arcade, and i got so good at it to a point no other person would race me in me, i mean at one point, i could race blindfolded in it, it was the perfect ridge racer game, with the perfect soundtrack...i miss that game so much.

We finally have RR on Switch! Must say I’ve been enjoying going back to this, so good for its time if you appreciate arcade racers and what they tried to do with this N64 entry. Nicely upscaled on NSO too. Not the best RR (that’s *Type 4* 💙) but this is still great on the go. Perhaps Namco is warming us up for a RR announcement soon!
We rented this a couple of times for the N64, back in the day. I liked it.

At the time wasn't aware of this game loved ridge racer revolution on ps1 just never knew bout this on n64 did have fun with top gear rally and overdrive and the cruise'n series on my n64
That drifting mechanic really threw me off to start with. Skidding all over the place 😂.

Nice! I played Ridge Racer Type 4. Some race tracks seem to be lifted from it. Loved the music in Type 4 (in the N64 version it seems different), and that it had a story (is there one in the N64 version?).
No, its pure arcade nostalgia, like the first ridge racer. My favorite ridge racer is 64 and the second is type 4. Amazing series!
@@TGNTheGamesNintendoOficial RR64 is good mix of old tracks, certainly better than RRV.
My chief memory was that N64 fuzziness made it harder to see where the track was going compared to other versions.

Great game but very hard in the last stages.
I have almos all the cars unlocked in my original cartridge .. still missing the last two.
You can beat them with Ultra 64 car. You get it by re-playing & winning each track with the highest speed Z -Class.

Never played the N64 version, but played the 3DS release quite a bit. But I hear the 3DS version was a pretty borked port.
I think you mean the Original DS version? It was a port of the N64 one... the 3DS one was based on RR 7 and 8

I love n64 games on nso because of the official n64 switch controller. It has every button you need to use the switch (snes controller needs a second controller connected sometimes). It is basically a pro controller.
Yeah and the megadrive controller is awful too it’s missing the modern features
How does this compare to Ridge racer type four on the PS1? That was probably the last Ridge racer game I played, I also had the special namco controller with the wheel in the middle.
I never played any other instalments after type four, I did have an opportunity to play Ridge racer V before the PS2 got its UK release but I did decided I wanted to play another Namco game instead in the form of Tekken tag tournament, these were the only two games that were playable in full at the time.

I played it early 2000's on an emulator on my pentium 3.8 Dell. I was blown away at what they could do with the Nintendo 64 from this game. The cars are jancky but it is a fun game. Try beating it, pretty fun. A friend had the N64 system but I never bought one. I can't do first person view, drives me nuts, you can't see the car in relation to obstacles.
Don't worry i had the same issue with all Ridge Racer games... So its not a N64 problem that is only playable from a 1st person view. ❤
Nintendo decided back then to create themselves a Ridge Racer title. I neber thought that Namco's racer was so important. I am impressed.
There is no visual weight transfer when cornering in the 3rd person viewpoint. This is something Sega Rally perfected half a decade before the release of RR64.

Mesmo na versão de PlayStation, Ridge Racer só oferece boa jogabilidade ao utilizar a visão em primeira pessoa. Deve ter sido um grande erro dos programadores, ou então eles quiseram propositalmente induzir o jogador a jogar apenas em primeira pessoa.
Controls are better in first person mode.

Did you ever try it with those (N64) rotary controllers, John? N64 had controllers that were neither spinners nor paddles, but… gave a wheel that rotated a few degrees. "Ultra Racer 64", etc. -I could imagine you making a video on that sort of thing.

You've got those N64 rotary controllers up there on a shelf somewhere, waiting to be reviewed. ;-) Maybe in combination with Wipeout 64?
You can drift the car through corners "backwards" by pushing the opposite direction that you would expect while initiating a drift. It looks really stupid....
Ridge Racer 64 was the best auto racing game on the system, hands down. Played the hell out of the game back in the day (still have it CIB). Same for the DS version.

Interesting how the intro gives the illusion of being an FMV cutscene, to make up for the fact that Nintendo 64 can't do FMVs.

I tried PS2 Ridge Racer for the first time (just within the last few months) and I was so disappointed that I'll never give anything else in the series a chance: with zero nostalgia, I can say that this series seems worse than (the very best of the) 16 bit racing games. And for me, that came as a surprise. Ridge Racer has an amazing reputation -but the gap between reputation and reality is more amazing still.
Recently saw a video on the RR series. I never played the 5th game but heard it was easily the worst of them all. Give RR or RR2 on the PSP a chance. Or 6 of 7 on consoles.
The 3DS version was also pretty bad: the two player mode is _pathetic._ I'm a fan of Namco, but… they've got a daunting ratio of terrible games for each good one.
RRV is tired, bland game, nowhere near the quality Type 4.
