You won't believe your eyes as the immortal Thumbs Carllile and Curly Chalker tear this old chestnut down. No extra charge for the rambling, nonsensical Red Foley outro!
I used to hang out with Curly when he used to play at the Hall of Fame Motor Inn in Nashville circa 1976.I would sing with his band, though I am also a guitar player and he knew me as a comedian also.Fantastic player! I Thumbs when I was in the house hand at the Stockyard restaurant and lounge (also Nashville) and was talking to him about putting up with the bad power in the building which affected the tone of the amplifiers (a problem there and many other places). He said " playing through an amp with bad power is like playing through an old sack of feed!" Lol!! I concur!
Thumbs was playing "Jane" in Germany about 1952. At that time he was playing a Bigsby guitar. This guitar was tracked down in Alaska in someone's attic.
Jimmy Belken and Johnny Manson on fiddles, btw. Great fiddle team that worked around Fort Worth/Dallas for years, played with the Cherokee Cowboys and others, wonderful players and human beings.
Fabulous film editing. Thank you so much! Love the ending statement by Red Foley, "That's all I know of it, Grady." Red is talking to Grady Martin Guitarist in the house band. God bless them each and every one!
Thumbs used to play on a public radio show that played Western Swing in the late 80's. Every 30 minutes, he'd play a song! What a great guy. When Thumbs died, the host quit his show.
This combo really smokes !! Wow .. I can't quite figure out why I've never come across this band before. Fantastic !! And don't they just love playing ... their enthusiam is wonderful to behold.
Just the second guitar player I've ever seen play like that. Jeff Healey being the first. Being blind, he couldn't have seen this guy. I'll have to look for more of his playing.
Grady isn't playing in this video clip. However, He must have been on the set as Red addressed him comment to Grady. Grady played in the house band. There are also recordings of Grady singing "My Window Faces the South with Red." Thrilling stuff, this!
I always thought he was saying 'that's all I know of it, I'm afraid''. Anyway, check out Grady with the house band on Red's 'Freight Train Boogie' here on this channel...
Grady isn't in this clip. Grady played guitar in the house band on the Ozark Jubilee. At the end of Red's impromptu vocal performance of "Lil Liza James" he addresses "Grady" who must certainly have been standing in the wings.
OMG! I cant believe I found this tune! My grandfather used to sing this to me when I was little. I want so bad to find the right lyrics to it! Does any one know where I can get the correct lyrics?
naw - that's definitely Curley. He and Thumbs were a legendary team on OJ. Check out 'Flyin High' to see the difference. And like Speedy, that's a straight steel - not pedal.
I Disagree with DCMemories. He had it right. If you don't believe me look at the video of Grandpa Jones singing it on RUclips. I think they know what they're doing.

Yeah, I think that guitar was originally owned by Butterball Paige. I have a pic of Thumbs playing it in Oregon in 1951.

This guy is my new favorite guitarist
All of these cats could play! Great stuff, thanks for sharing!
Love that WESTERN SWING! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh-Haaaaaaaa!
That was awesome. All the guitar work, fucking right.

Smokin'...
(Someone please tell Red that it goes... "Oh Eliza, little Liza Jane. Oh, Eliza. She died on the train.")
HOT STUFF a BARNBURNER FOR SURE ... then old Red cools everyone down
Amazing natural talent of Thumbs Carllile!
Just the second guitar player I've ever seen play like that. Jeff Healey being the first. Being blind, he couldn't have seen this guy. I'll have to look for more of his playing.
Holey moley they are wonderful!!!!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, J. Edgar Hoover on the drums!
I thought it was Johnathan Winters?
@@jondoe8889 😄 you may be right!
Alot of performers today act like they're doing you a favor by permorming. Not these guys. They're so glad to be there!
It looks like T Tommy Cutrer on drums . I could be wrong. But it isn't who the funnymakers think it is. Great music from great musicians!!!
Awesome.

Is that Curly Chalker on steel guitar.?
Wow!
I always thought he was saying 'that's all I know of it, I'm afraid''.
Anyway, check out Grady with the house band on Red's 'Freight Train Boogie' here on this channel...
Ha ha...no question. And if you look at T. Tommy on those Opry TV shows, the resemblance is not far off!
Yes. that would be the 'Curly' of the title. Also check under 'more info'
thanks!
I'll be damned! Freakin' nuts peoples!

Hell yeaH!! :D
LMAO! Wearing his airline pilots uniform! LOL
just need fiddles and stringbass
The thumb only intro is faster than most want to play with their fingers !!!
Thanks . You'll have to admit it was a better guess than J Edgar or Winters.
That's a gorgeous Strat, what year is this?
Thumbs was on the show from 1956 to 1958, so the guitar was a '54 to a '58.
OMG! I cant believe I found this tune! My grandfather used to sing this to me when I was little. I want so bad to find the right lyrics to it!
Does any one know where I can get the correct lyrics?
Jonathan winters on drums?lol
Actually, the drummer was Bill Wimberly...it was his band.
i believe the pedal steel player was speedy west...not curley chalker??
Is that Jonathan Winters on drums? :-)
and steel guitar
It's not a pedal steel. Looks like a Fender double-8 or triple-8. Hard to tell from the blur, but there's definitely no pedals on it.
