I met Thumbs, one night at the Palomino night club in North Hollywood.. Really nice guy!.. I'd been talking with him for about ten minutes..before a friend sitting at the table said, Hey, Rowland...I don't think I've introduced you!.. This is Thumbs Carlyle!.. My gosh!..My jaw must have dropped to the floor..LOL.. A really nice man and AMAZING!!.. guitar player.. He went on stage, shortly after I have the conversation with him.. I was there that night..it was crowded..and my friend, asked me to join them at the table. Thumgs' wife was sitting there, as well.. What a nice lady.. Both!.. were SO down to earth and real people!.. It was a really great memory for me.
There needs to be a 'love' button for this! I saw Thumbs in the early 80s and he blew me away for 90 minutes straight. The band was just as killer - Johnny Gimble, Roy Lanham, Tiny Moore, Bud Isaacs and Duane Eddy. Unforgettable!
Thumbs was a great music artist who was known to the music industry, but not to the public. Roger Miller certainly recognized him when thumbs joined his band. I met Thumbs through Roger and both complimented each other. Both left us way too soon. I wish they had lived longer so we could have enjoyed them more. Both were music geniuses…
I was blessed to have worked with him for 3 years. He was Amazing. He told jokes all the way to Muscle Sholes and back and never repeated one. I love him ❤
I am what one could refer to as a "post Van Halen (amazing player & innovator in his own right) player" nevertheless I have nothing but admiration for cats of Thumbs's ilk! The first time I heard Les Paul I thought "oh, that's where Jeff beck got some stuff from!" so I started digging back and listening to those cats, Chet Atkins, Joe Maphis, Speedy West, Jimmy Bryant, etc. etc. and all those wonderful players, all of whom show true musicality, creativity and supreme technique, all the while sounding extremely "positive"! Not quite the same style of player but few years ago I bumped into Elliott Randal at the London Guitar Show and told him, "I do what I do, but it's cats such as you that I look up to"...
Thumbs and I used to drink gin at the ol' gin joint near Debuke and Pine jus' outside Scratch Haven. Sometime he'd pick the ol' guitar and entertain us common folk, but sometimes he'd let me join in. Musta been at least 50 years gone by now. I still haven't washed my cheek.
They're with Tennessee Ernie Ford who was a very popular singer with my parents' generation here in the States, during the 40s, 50s and 60s especially.
That's actually helpful to me, thinking about getting back to learning guitar. It's more obvious visually with this finger style than the standard playing style, that he uses next to no pressure on the fret board. I gave up as a teenager because the only guitars I knew were my own two and they were crap with high action (but I didn't even know what "action" was) that hurt like hell. The real musician I gave them to on consignment decades later said "No wonder you quit." They were that bad.
My God he was good. So far advanced. Listen to some of these "Sweep Pickers" today & they gotta have on their "Buzz Box 20 Lb Deep Metal Grind Metal Man Man Box" before they can "Pick" a thing. They touch a string a for a split second before the Noise Gate cuts in its total Shit. Listen to this guy. Its a guitar (with what is probably shitty action & feel compared to today's guitars) an Amp & that's it. CLEAN
Is it me or does Thumbs guitar neck look bowed in the close up shots . Ive heard Danny Gatton say more than once that when Thumbs is around Danny couldnt play any thing Dannys words .
I'm sorry I don't remember Thumbs Carllile, but I loved Tenn. Ernie Ford. And I believe Roger Miller's talent got stuck in his funny songs but he was multitalented.

I love Roger Miller's speaking (and singing) voice.
Stunning work from a forgotten hero of guitar. It can't be done but it was, by the genius of Thumbs...
Love Roger Miller’s very good work on rhythm guitar
You shoulda heard him play fiddle.
Yeah! He kept right up.
Roger was no slouch on guitar himself.
I love how the 2 camera (close up) makes the neck look like it's bent. that's awesome!
Absolutely amazing to me! So great to see this, thank you! I'll be looking for more videos featuring Thumbs so I can learn more about him.
Guess I've been holding the guitar wrong all this time. What a player
He plays the guitar pretty much the same way as Jeff Healey. Amazing.
I'm so glad you mentioned Jeff Healey. I wanted to look him up on RUclips, but I couldn't remember his name.
Except Jeff used his thumb on the fretboard, giving him all 5 on top. I've seen others play like Thumbs, just not nearly as well.
I'll give it a Thumb's Up ! 👍
Loved Thumbs since 60s, He did a tune quoting a lot of country guitarists []and pedal and then mimiced them. Springfield saturday social
"There was a guy sittin' in back, pickin' his geetar with a carpet tack"
great recording, cheers
That's the wildest thing I ever saw!

Roger's laugh at 0:49 is everything. Just lights up the room!
Goddamn that was great
AMAZING TALENT.
Thumbs was truly a great guitarist, and influenced a lot of musicians including Danny Gatton.
Wow that was truly amazing. What a technique Thumbs has!
Got to give Roger Miller some credit on this one too!
I don’t think his guitar is actually being captured here 😬
geez wow man, so cool
Wow, just wow.
They're with Tennessee Ernie Ford who was a very popular singer with my parents' generation here in the States, during the 40s, 50s and 60s especially.
Dang. That's impressive.
I believe that song is called Alabama Jubilee

Great.
That was mindblowing
Great video.
Unbelievable!!!! 😮😮
Wow, amazing, unorthodox perfection.

So true, so many no-talent posers making millions off the generally POOR taste of 'American' society
Ok, boomer....
@@skiptracer2988 stick to your talentless shredders who think sounding like a swarm of bees is musical, gen x'r
Wow!
THIS IS SO GOOD ITS CRAZY!!
Roger Miller is such a nut. 😀
Damn!
Fantastic!
Thumbs done it!
Tuned in strait E.
'Strait' ??
strait ??
In one interview he said he tuned down a half step. Of course, that could change depending on the song. He was a great, great player.
Fantastic vid, thanks for the upload
Ok, now that was crazy......
1:40 Is the film just weird or his guitar neck bent?
Is that the TV or is his guitar neck really warped like that ? What tuning did her use and could Thumbs do chords ?
I don't think I knew that Tennessee Ernie Ford had a TV show.
Have we been going backwards?
'Strait'??
It's not Hank Garland it's Thumbs Carllile .
Your welcome thanks for all the fabulous music !
Is it me or does Thumbs guitar neck look bowed in the close up shots . Ive heard Danny Gatton say more than once that when Thumbs is around Danny couldnt play any thing Dannys words .
Rogers doin all the heavy lifting. Hes playing all 6 strings at once, Thumbs is only playing one string at a time😂
Jeff Healey played that way. And he was blind.
Love the "C-clamp" being used for a capo.
I'm sorry I don't remember Thumbs Carllile, but I loved Tenn. Ernie Ford. And I believe Roger Miller's talent got stuck in his funny songs but he was multitalented.
Thumbs played with Roger for many years.
But he doesn't use his thumbs!
He using his left thumb picking the strings if you take notice!
...........:)
1:35 man, that neck action needs some WORK! :)
Yeah, it's amazing it even plays all twisted like that.
the neck wasn't twisted... that was the way early TV distorted some images. if you lived back then, you were used to seeing that.
@@jlr022159 um, I know it's not actually twisted. Iwas making a joke.
Tom Bukovac brought me here.
Anybody here come from the Fretted American Phil X video?
Great playing by Mr. Callile, but Tennessee Ernie strikes me as having been a slightly arrogant SOB.
To be fair, you have to be kind of full of yourself to reach the sort of heights that any of these three guys did.
@@SADFORIAN
Chet Atkins and a lot of other very talented musicians and entertainers weren’t necessarily arrogant and annoying.
