If you're starting to feel old at 40, you're going to be in big trouble 20 years from now. At 55 I feel better and am stronger than when I was 20 due to my lifestyle change.

Just wanted to say this video really resonated with me. I am 40 and am constantly trying to live like I’m 25. I spent a lot of time in the military which kind of put my life on hold, and being surrounded by younger soldiers facilitated my continuing to act young. But the part where you said “what do you have to prove” and “your dragons should be slain by now” really hit me. I realize that I did achieve my old goals and now I just keep setting the bar higher, without recognizing what I have already done. It is O.K. to keep aiming higher, but it is important in order to not feel like a failure stop once in a while to look at all those “dragons” you have already slain.

I'm 45, been working out since my late teens, worked through a few injuries including one bad one and yeah when I recall the extreme resilience of youth I miss it but I always smile fondly at the memory but as crazy as it may sound to some, I'm loving getting older because in so many ways life has gotten so much easier and more relaxed. I love the crazy, confused, mostly good but slightly insecure and stressed out young man I was, he was OK but the man I am now is more comfortable with life AND with the fact that in many ways I'm still a work in progress. I'm loving the ride so much more now.
As for this young Elliot dude? I've watched about 5 videos and I've been waiting for this emphatic young man to expose himself as a dick head and start talking shit but he just keeps talking sense. And as far as I can tell, being that his knowledge is greater than mine on many of his topics, his wise and smart advice is non stop. Elliot is one of the best discoveries I've made in my four years of RUclips.

Did you start doing things in the beginning that you would never do now, have you found a system that works well for you and have you stuck to it for the last decade or so (why or why not), are you still trying to achieve gains or more so focused on maintaining your physique and feeling good?

Excellent advice and video! I'm 62, feel and look 25 from the neck down (45ish above the neck) and still attract women in their 20's - divorce has been good to me. I've been active and worked out on/off since my college athletic days determined to stay in shape. However I attribute much of my youthful appearance to a young attitude (and good genes) and interacting with younger people. To remain young, aside from working out & eating better, you need to adopt a young lifestyle. Read, develop new ideas, try new activities, push yourself to grow in every way rather than strive for comfort. My peers have become sedentary, complacent and boring - we have little in common any more. If you're not growing, you're dying!

You are dead-on, 100% correct. I'm 60, and every morning I wake up and remind myself I am 35, and within seconds I feel an energy surge and start my bodyweight workout. Constant reminders throughout the day spike my energy again; no drugs, no caffeine...lots of water, though, and I still lift weights at night, and fairly heavy at that.

Just turned 38. And I now think of myself as a classic car, a 57 corvette convertible if you will. You can still take it out and drive it hard but..... You need to change the oil, lube it, change belts, and maintain it religiously. You also have to store it indoors and warm it up for 15 minutes every time you drive. OK I'm taking the metaphor a little far but you get the point. If you cut corners even once and something breaks you're f*d. Good luck finding parts :-)

I am in the Armed Services, and plan on retiring in the services. In the services we are expected to be able to do many of the things we were able to do when we were 18 or at least were able to do after basic training. Now I to am 35 working on 60... The military has chewed me up and spit me out. My knees are shot, my feet are shot, and now my hips are starting to crack and pop when I stretch. I eat like Jack La Lane, lift like a champ, run for miles on end, and meditate like a yogi. The only thing keeping me together is sheer will. A hope and a prayer brother. I have nothing to prove, but I still have to slay the dragons or they will burn me alive... Spirituality and will power can carry a man a long way, so long as the man knows his potential is beyond what his body is willing to allow. What I am trying to say is believe in your self. Respect yourself. Set outlandish long term goals that will benefit everyones interests. Do not fear change, welcome it. Without change there would be no adventure. Be spontaneous, remember to woo your loved ones, Do not let stupid differences ruin friendships or love. Do not get complacent. Never loose focus on what is truly important. Be yourself. Have compassion for those the piss you off the most.... Happiness is not a destination. It is a state of being that can comes and goes like rain and sun. live with love in all you do, and give thanks for all you have on a regular basis. And have patience. Age is nothing but the passing of time, use it wisely and give it generously. Live like you mean it. Thanks Elliot!

Dude. I never started lifting heavy things until I was in my early 40's. I'm 47 now and did my first PL competition last week (bench only) & got a 305 lb bench press. Today I did a 525 lb rack pull. And since I started lifting I've added a solid 35 lb of muscle. However, I have to say you're right. My main sport through my 20's and 30's was mountaineering. I did ice climbing, mountaineering, scrambling, and alpine rock climbing. So I'm doing OK with the lifting these days and I still do easy scrambles and simple rock climbs, but my days of serious climbing are over. I can't kid myself about it, if I tried to do some of the things I used to I probably wouldn't survive long. Which kind of sucks, like all climbers I had a tick list and there's a bunch of stuff on there that won't ever get done. As far as adding muscle past 40 goes yes it can be done but I don't think you can get huge, and if you're not well versed in fitness to begin with you'll only have limited success.

I had to laugh because at certain points you could have been talking directly to me. Moving further on in my life experience has brought many physical changes. I knew they were coming but to actually have them crawl in bed with you and get up with you every night and day has been an adjustment. I'm 58 now. As an athletic relatively strong 40 year old guy I respect your perspective in this vid. Balance is important in life regardless of age. Lifting heavy shit don't mean shit if thats all you are because strength has many faces. I wish some of the younger guys on here would stop putting negative comments; your only revealing your own personallity weaknesses. Some of us older guys just work out so that we can be healthy for our kids, and we don't care less about 6 pack abs. We remain healthy for our familys and hopefully we can give you younger guys a good example. This is a health channel, not some dum ass rip your abs up channel.

Elliott, you hit the nail on the head with the food list becoming smaller as a person grows older. I'm 52, and will be 53 next month, and was always an animal when it came to food, drinking, and living the young life. I love NY strip steaks, but I can only eat half of a steak a few times a month. My diet is mostly vegetables, chipotle black bean patties, and a slice of 9 grain bread in the morning. SLEEP has become vital. I cannot function without enough sleep. Bro, you are so complete. You've learned so much about yourself in your lifetime. You combine it all together, life, the mind, integrity, nutrition, family. *Peace*

I'm 48 and haven't trained ' properly ' for about 4 yrs, but I can still fairly easily, compete & beat guys in their 20's, in the gymn.
The only thing is I have noticed joint soreness in my knees. I' also think that the young guys , these days, don't seem to have as much tenacity, and they do not train anywhere near as much as we used to. They seem more bothered about who has got the best training gear & clothes, how tanned they are, or if their eyebrows are plucked right !

I am 45 five years old and have started power lifting for the first time in my life. I am an adventure enthusiast (whitewater rafting, mtn biking, snowboarding and I go hard every chance I get!!!!!!!) and a former infantry Marine, but now have my first desk job and go to school at night. Power-lifting has helped my back (fewer chiropractic visits) my posture and my ability to get air into my lungs. Thanks for the advice Elliot! I am taking my time and focusing on technique and allowing a few weeks of slow intense movements to train muscle memory and build the base to explode into the lifts I want to be doing. I have gained 15# in 3 weeks (hard gainer my whole life 5' 11" 155#). I can see it in my traps and feel it in my rhomboids. Amazing! Thanks again.

I trained hard in my twenties and in my thirties pretty much stopped bodybuilding altogether. I started running and for ten years this pretty much became my only training routine, When I turned 40 I went back to lifting, combining running as well, and can definitely say I've looked my best now. I'm lifting heavier now and my arms are at their biggest, this mixed with aerobic exercise has given me, for the first time, a six pack. Sure people, we get older, but we should never ease up because of a number we reach, we should ease up when our body tells us it's time to. If the body can lift it, and the mind is in a good place, I can't see any reason why we shouldn't just keep going. It's often not our bodies that think we can't do it anymore, but our own mentality.
Do what makes you happy people, love the pump - greetings from the UK.

Good commentary on this topic, Elliott. I'm 38, and inspired by the wasting away I see all too often in my peers (oh, the magic of watching high school era friends age on Facebook...), I recently did an about-face in my own life to put more focus on improving my quality of life through improving my health and physical fitness (clearly, not an uncommon move). I am finding that at my age the muscle growth comes slower than it used to in my college days, but strength and size gains are hardly an impossibility. In my own mind, as I rebuild my body it certainly feels like I am getting a bit younger, and that is certainly a feeling worth the effort.

Excellent advice, knows what he's on about. I'm 56 gym 3 times a week. Can't lift what I used too, but that's ok. I have some joint pain but can get around that. Have always believed in correct form, like to superset and yes pyramid up. Stretching is very important and I spend 15 mins after every work out stretching. I also mountain bike. Age is just a number. When should you stop training ? When you don't enjoy it anymore and you can't motivate yourself. Still love that feeling of walking out the gym after a good workout. Great information Elliott. I'm a 46 year old mother of three and I agree that as we age our body does become more sensitive to the things we do to it. I myself have to remind myself that I'm not a twenty year old and that it will take me longer to recover from my workouts. I do hope to be like your 63 year old father, still strong enough to get the things I need done when I need them done. Thanks for all the great advice. And even though your core audience is men, I find your videos very helpful and informative. seejanesweat

I hope you will feel good at 63 too! Some of it is genetics and a lot of it is lifestyle. But even doing things the right way some of us just age differently, I don't know sometimes the way I feel these days I don't even know how I can be a strong old man but I sure will try and be the best that I can be. Just gotta keep training and get rest. Fasting is very useful too, give those organs a rest and allow the body to clean itself.

    Elliot,
    Thank you bro!!!
I just turned 51, I became disabled at age 42 with crippling COPD and slowly after severe spinal issues.
Your video is the first i've watched that actually gave me the hope i needed.
I knew inside exactly what you were saying but had yet to hear any doctor convey.
Lay back, take it easy, surgury down the line 4 vertebrae fusion BULLSHIT!!
I was athletic all my life and could work any 5 guys under the table with heavy construction work doing drywall installation alone and finishing, hauling the boards, carrying 100 lb bags of concrete for 22 years. Then like a train wreck the COPD hit me, 23 trips to the er in 3 months, tested for every terrorist attack virulent around etc. It took me a long time to put together a team of doctors that now have my COPD manageable. I couldnt walk to the corner, now i can walk the dog!! But I need more, my diet is shit and my inner core is soft like a marshmallow. I just joined a gym on a holidat special, I want to stretch and do sit ups and the Military press for negative stress on my discs, I drink a lake of water everyday, im on a ton of pain meds for my back and i seriously believe the answer to my back troubles is to strengthen my core, abs and back muscles, I dont think ill be jogging 10 miles a day ever again, but id like to avoid surgery, sleep better and lift things without fear of shredding my spine. I can do all this at home with the exception of the bike and treadmill, i intend to do a limited amount of these as they have proven beneficial for back injuries. I have chosen a gym (a big one) because i need to get out and be around people, this will help me mentally. I was a hobbyist weight lifter and endurance was my goal, I could jog 10 miles then skateboard another 6 and did for years, ive spent my disabled years longing for that 'burn' i used to feel, your video has confirmed what i believed anyway, I can do all this low key, get back into shape, get back to a healthy weight, im 265 now and its not all neck chest and arms lol! I hope to reach 225 maybe 200 in 6 months.
I want to thank you for your real, no sales pitch, straight from the heart with good knowledge sharing of how we age. I laughed at all the truths you shared as i reflected on what I feel day to day, I had the nickname 'Hulk' when i was younger, now its 'doughnut' lol!
I subscribed to your vids and look forward to more encouragement as i stretch my way back into healthy form mentally and physically.
    God bless you Brother
    Michael

Elliot, I am soon to be 66 years old. I took up bodybuilding on a serious level just two years ago. I have made some amazing gains, shape, and size. You are right about age, though. My joints just don't like such hardcore work. But I muscle through, and take painkillers when it gets too much at night. I am happy with my new appearance and feel, and for the time being, I will keep this up. It is very intoxicating to me to see a younger guy in the mirror....but I am not fooling myself. I am never going to look like an IFBB guy...but I will sure look better in my clothes and out of them, too!

The hardest thing to learn as you age is, you're not as strong as you use to be. I lifted the most at 50. Now, at 63, I can't lift the same weight. It took me a couple of years to accept the fact that I will never be the same.

+J19Pritch If I worked as hard and smart in my early 20's as I do now, holy crap, I'd have been an animal. Is a great statement however therein lays the answer for many people, fi you did very little when you were younger it will show as you grow older. On the flipside; if you were working hard like a beast in your youth, you would still be working fairly decent now, but a whole lot smarter.

Torn all the time to take it easy and go lighter, then I will see a 60 year old deadlift 4 plates and think 47 is not old. When I was 21 I thought 50 year olds belong on old age homes and should just give it up. Now that I'm nearly 50 and I hear younger guys say that, I look at them and think I can outdo you in anything and I look better than you! I've gotten as young as 30 when ppl guess my age. I will post a video of me benching 315 for 5, Ive gone to 8 before. I figure i will still train hard, about to get some Romaleo 2s for squats. Maybe when I turn 50 I will take up tennis and yoga. Definitely a blander diet has gone a long way for me. Cutting sugars, spicy food, sodas, and staying at baseline salt levels, I've noticed that my stomach rarely bothers me anymore. Whereas in the past, I was always getting stomach pain and just training my brain to ignore it or take a pill to calm it down. Combined that with weight training and cardio 5 days a week and everyone is telling me that I've lost a lot of weight. Whereas, I'm still eating the same amount of food as before, it's just healthier and bland most of the time. And for me, bland food isn't depressing. I think about the tranquil calm of my stomach I'll have for eating it.

I'm in better shape than I was when I was 25, but with that said my trainer and I do have to take it slow with my body and as you stated we have to be sensitive to it and listen to when it complains. My joints, wrist, knees, ankles and lower back tend to protest the most when lifting heavier weights, but we go slow and deliberate. The results are and have been awesome.

While I thank dozens of youtube videos that give strength and inspiration to every man at my age, this one simply does the opposite! I just turned 40 and have always trained on and off. I was also in the army from 20-26 years old. I recently got back in the gym 2 months ago after taking 2 years off due to a shoulder injury. I am currently in the best shape of my life at 40 years old. I'm stronger than I have ever been and feel the same if not better than I did 20 years ago if not better. It's all mentality and the individual. I never had a six pack in my 20's, 30's, or teens. I now have six pack abs and the best muscle definition of my life. It's only a number guys, I can hang with any 25 year old, in fact my gym buddy is around that age and he gets tired before I do. It does take a lot more work and focus to keep up at my age and it is difficult to gain mass but I am shredded and look better than most guys half my age.

Elliot: I'm 62 years old. This past Christmas, I bought ME a Christmas present, an eight foot long, nearly new, Gold's Gym weight bench. I'm trying to get back into weightlifting. I have arthritis all over. I have degenerative joint disease. I have a separate bench for sit ups; a separate bench for bench presses. I'm doing squats with my new Christmas present. I also do leg lifts and extensions with the Gold's Gym bench. I started working out with my new bench and already have lost two pounds since last Friday, Dec.26. I already don't hurt as much as I did before I bought the bench. When you get old, you need to stay active. I just am 5 feet tall with my shoes on and weigh around 152 pounds I want to get down to 135. I'm short, but I have a large frame. I have a pet 85 pound wolf who walks me, five miles at a time. Being active, and walking and weightlifting can alleviate more pain than pills; and is probably a whole lot safer.

If you say so. We do lose muscle as we age, but not near as much as people would think. In fact with every 10 years after 30 we lose maybe 1-3 lbs. There is evidence of muscle memory. If you worked out before and get out of shape, it doesnt take long for the work outs to bring shape again. Mostly people settle down with jobs as they age and don't do the same activities as when they were younger and had more free time.

35 as old? I'm 20 years older and it only gets tougher. My bit of advice is add some yoga / pilates. I take tennis classes and my coach back in 2009 thought yoga would help me turn back the clock. I thought "Me yoga?" But it was some of the best advice ever at keeping my body's foundation strong for anything else. Pilates is more strength and less "mystical" but give them a few sessions for results to sink in.

what if you're in your late 30s and don't have a family yet ? .. this video has a good message for those who've 'slayed their dragons' and have a family .. makes sense that you reach a point where you don't need to be proving anything to anyone .. especially if you have a family(wife kids) .. their your priority now ..
but this video is also kind of depressing .. for those older guys who haven't really established that 'foundation' .. or have a family .. and your mind is still thinking of 'slaying dragons' and 'proving yourself' etc ..
it starts getting kinda pathetic to have that mentality it seems after a certain age

Yo brother. I'm 38 and have no kids or even a girlfriend for that matter. It's seriously OK. There's really nothing wrong. Hit the gym and or yoga with mandatory meditation daily in the new year and you will be fine. Gym will satisfy your confidence while the yoga and MANDATORY meditation will solidify your confidence and overall vitality. Everything we want resides within us and every perceived road block is put there for our growth. There are plenty of girls I know I can date and make a family with. I suspect there are plenty for you as well.

im 45 and dont have any kids or married.....i also only workout for myself its like a meditation or zen thing im not still trying to lift as much weight as i did at 30 and i dont even lift at a gym in front of people. but am i supposed to explain to people why i didnt want to get married in my 20s and why past relationships didnt work out? trying to justify why im not one of the married fold ?. .....most people think im in my early 30s and i definitely attribute that to NOT being married to a nagging wife and dealing with a gaggle of kids and in most cases dealing with a nasty divorce that comes later......lastly who wants to just keel over say fuck it and grow a huge belly and double chin because you're 40 ? ask most 80 yos if they would want to be 40 again and do things differntly see what answers you get.

This is what I found. I am 54. Have been training seriously since 1978. I could get in tremendous shape till I got to be 40. Then I noticed that I just could not gain the size and strength that I could always gain if I started eating more and lifting heavier. I no longer feel as extreme a pump either. That being said I still can get in damn good shape at 54. But my peak is long behind me.

I relate to what you say too. I'm 41 and have been living in Spain for the past 6 years, new country, job, learning a new language, new environment etc. I love it but worry about this "if you haven't got your dragons slayed by now" issue. I hope to have a wife and maybe a kid someday but stress that it might have passed me by and that's a depressing thought.
I couldn't imagine myself doing Yoga! but from what I researched, I think I need it. I exercise, cycle, run, walk a lot) but I need to be more careful about what I eat. I also smoke (I know!) and drink beer (weekends) but I'm so far in pretty good shape. (6ft,1 / 175lbs) Recently though, signs are beginning to show . . .

Great advice, and quite true. You must maintain your body much more when you are older, just like an older car. Old injuries WILL come back to haunt you, so you have to strengthen, support and work around those accordingly. Get 7.5 - 8 hours of sleep a night, keep hydrated / drink tea etc. Watch your diet, take the right supplements / vitamins etc. and keep active. Apparently, people who live the longest are endurance athletes, like marathon runners etc. as their hearts are so strong. Some of the strongest people I've met are in the 40-50 age range, some have been strong athletes / farmers etc. and now generally take good care of their diet/body. When you watch a 50+ year old, bang out 50 push-ups like it's nothing, you begin to understand... (One plays ping-pong!) Take flax-seed oil / Omega-3 supplements and Astragalus (Milk Vetch root extract) (TA-65 if you can afford it). Do not drink alcohol, don't smoke, stay away from sugar, salt is ok in moderation, but drink water. This way you can live longer, do more stuff, and have a better quality of life into your later years.

Thanks. That's interesting. Fasting may boost longevity, as it is probably how our bodies used to operate, but also a low-calorie diet can achieve a similar thing, a low sugar / relatively low high-GI carbs and low sodium diet. Longevity is also linked to telomeres in our chromosomes, certain people with certain genetics have exceptionally long telomere sequences. There are substances like Astragalus / TA-65 etc. molecules that can apparently act as molecular factories, and add telomeres, and avoid cell-death, and slow the aging process. It's estimated you could increase your lifespan 20-30%. Floyd Maywather Jr. is 37 btw.

Real RnB Diet is everything. If you're doing that much work and not losing weight, then you have to look at diet (presuming you have a normal metabolism). There's a macro/calorie tracking app that I find helpful: My Macros+. It's like a $4 app, I think. At any rate, if you are doing P90X and Insanity and not losing fat, then either your endocrine/metabolic system is off, or you are eating too many calories.

How is your hydration, then? Water is essential to fat metabolism. Drinking a gallon of water per day will help boost your metabolism, and it will help even more if you squeeze two fresh lemons into the water each day.

Take what weight you know you are suppose to be, multiply by 10. Divide by six. That number should be how many calories to eat 6 times per day. Stay away from white rice and white pasta. You'll lose weight extremely fast when it kicks in and levels your insulin levels throughout the day. Gl

Real RnB No way you should be close to 270 at 6'1 unless you're Summoan. I recommend intermittent fasting and cleaning up your diet. If you're like me, and are a volume eater, you need to "feel full" before quitting the food train. Intermittent fasting (IF) does that. As far as strength, remember, it's all tied into recovery. Instead of working out 5-7 days a week, be a minimalist, lift 3 days a week, day off in between, take weekends off from weights and just do light cardio. It'll take longer to get to where you want, but not really, because you won't rebound and fall off the wagon. Good luck to you man.

Love your vids. This one made a lot of sense to me. I'm 44 and way out of shape. Just started back at the gym and started walking every evening. I'm sore as heck the next day after a work out and that soreness lasts for 4 days... Your absolutely right about paying more attention to detail and starting off slow and on core principles.... My trainer is pushing me way too hard to get these fictitious results in 12 weeks...He's gonna get me injured more than get me results. I fired my trainer and started doing my own research and feel better after my work outs now. Your advice is awesome! Keep up your great work!

51 and still working out. You must change eating habits as you get older period! But keep on keeping on! I do what my body allows me to. I'm less prone to get injured as long as I work out. Now as someone mentioned, Life is good. Enjoying life with my wife of 33 yrs at 51!

Funny thing is, dehydrated whey and other animal-based proteins have much more oxidized cholesterol than any cheeseburger has, yet the kids at the gym inhale the crap as if it was candy.

49 and this video really hit home. After several years of laziness, I have, for the past year, begun to get my body in order. It can happen, if you work at it, but you don't bounce back like you used to. It takes longer. And that's a fact of life I have to deal with now. Going to be facing a surgery soon that will leave me unable to walk for 2 months, due to an injury that happened long ago, that I just ignored. I will have to move around only with my upper body, so the workouts have begun. To all you young, invincible folks, lingering injuries only get worse the longer you wait and the older you get. Deal with it while you are young and can bounce back quickly.
