- Here is another video! Long overdue!! This time we were back with our friend James and we are clipping ewes tails prior to lambing.
Although the sound quality isn’t great i discuss why we are doing this and the benefits.
Also get a look at James’ ewes which were in great form and only a couple weeks off the lambing!!

That’s cause he speaks with a damn potato in his mouth, no seriously one of my best mates has this accent and got no issue…but this guy? SMFH. I also tried turning on CCs to see if I couldn’t understand him better but alas, ain’t just me, even CCs can’t figure it out 😂 which is too bad TBH, I routinely drift off and turn off his videos because it’s incoherent mumbling, for the first handful of videos? I thought his name was Carnie, cause the dude can’t even pronounce his own name properly 🤦🏼♂️

Put them across the board, take the belly off, or half if you want, makes it easier for the lamb to get a drink, and keeps the belly wool clean, and out of the mud

I was surprised that the sheep went through the water. My understanding was that they saw it as a hole, so they would not cross it.
Awesome! Love your work. Why do you clip the top of the tail? I understand why you clip the bottom and legs. Does the the top get manure on it too?
Donna Spear start at the top and clear the whole tail. Stops them getting dirty with dung or after birth fluids following lambing. Also makes it a bit easier to see what’s happening whilst lambing however that isn’t so applicable in these tight skinned sheep. It would be very beneficial in blackface sheep who have more wool on the tail. You wouldn’t want to do them at this time of year tho as it’s too cold.

Have you ever considered building a ramp and a platform to elevate the sheep. This way you can do the job without bending over , it’ll save your back.
We do that at dog shows for the dogs.

so i have seen Joanna from farm dale do the foot things but yet here in Canada Sandi Brock doesnt what is it for and whats in it ???
Sandy Brock’s sheep operation is a little different, because she has everything indoors under over year round, and her sheep stand on straw bedding. Sandi’s sheep are mostly the Rideau Alcott breed, developed in Canada specifically for Canadian conditions and also for being excellent mothers capable of delivering triplets, quads, and even quintuplets. Sandi normally will trim hooves about the same time each group gets shorn while they are pregnant, so the lambs will have easier access to nurse. The typical foot bath solution is really important for preventing hoof rot; as these sheep are outdoors in Scotland’s wet weather, it does make sense to treat them periodically with a foot bath, to prevent infections. It varies, but one typical ingredient in many foot baths, is formalin. Needless to say, it’s not the kind of liquid you want all over your own skin - or want sheep standing in for an extended period of time.

Handpiece is what it's called .
What cuts the wool attached to the handpiece , the blades are called comb and cutter .The bigger wider one is called a comb and smaller one is a cutter as it cuts the wool .
cut to your 3rd knuckle dont cut bone, dip for dags rubber castration bands for the lads to mart. vitamin dose we do this with 4wds mobile pens Quads and dogs when they are lambs.
we only try dip and dag yows before lambing thats all.

In this flock, the farmer put all his rams into a “raddle harness”, which has a holder for a block of pigment. Whenever the ram mates a ewe, his chest rubs on her bum - and he transfers some of the color from the block onto her bum. After about 10 days, the farmer changed the color of the raddle crayon - in this case, from orange to blue. (Not sure about the red though). What that does, is let the farmer see at a glance, which of his ewes will be delivering their lambs first - in this case, the ones with orange bums. If the first breeding didn’t take, a ewe will likely be mated on her next cycle - and she will get blue marking on her bum, on top of the earlier orange. It’s a useful management strategy; imagine you have a lambing shed that can hold 30 ewes and their newborn lambs. But you have a flock of 60 sheep. If you wanted to potentially help the ewes who would be delivering their lambs first, you would bring in all the orange ones, and leave the blue ones til later. In essence, all the orange ewes with their new lambs, would be bonded and ready to go back to the outside fields before any of the blue ones were ready to lamb.

Sam Goodman about an hour mate. It’s a pretty quick job. I had other shearing / scanning jobs on that day so was pushing on whilst messing about with camera.
