    ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

I love you guys. But I was just laughing about how patient Lizzie is because if my hubbie stuck a camera in my face to ask me about how awful I feel being pregnant, I'd box his ears! xD

These are such beautiful lambs - I think one of the most striking characteristics is their soft and clean looking faces. Their long ears are adorable and the ones with the black faces are cuteness overload but the face looks so clean, smooth and soft

I enjoyed the reshuffling of ewes and lambs. Fern certainly is anxious to be included! The other two are absolutely amazing as they work the group. Lizzy was incredible...38 weeks and working with the sheep. Take good care.

Watching Fern so desperate to work is adorable. She's so ready to join in and do some herding! Once she's learned more from running with the older dogs, I bet she'll be a superstar in the field.

🤣🤣Long lines are really useful in training a new sheepdog. You have a way to bring them back, if they get too intense or decide not to listen. You also can keep them safe, and get them out of trouble. Allowing any dog to just run and chase sheep, can cause horrendous problems - the long line is for training and safety for all involved.

I LIKE how you're doing that, easiest on both, leave the babes in their familiar spot but take mum's in their familiar group to a new spot...😁psychology 101, ewes shouldn't be able to hear lambs but get good pasture, lambs stay in familiar surroundings, with their buddies and where they know water and feed provisions come from(if you've been creep feeding, or they've been stealing from mom...

I love watching you work your dogs. I've never been privileged enough to be near working sheep dogs. my experience has been in training obedience. mostly working with Dobermanns and lately training service dogs of a size that they can use pee pads and fulfill their exercise needs with staircases and jumping on and off beds or sofas chasing a squeeky toy. I've been using Miniature Pinschers for myself and they have served well, their independent streak getting them to double check if the command given should be followed or should they ask again, keeping their charge out of potential trouble rather than blindly proceeding (twice, I have learned that my dogs have saved me a lot of trouble). I have had one dog that learned to lie (and she was mine), indicating that we shouldn't proceed when it was fine to go ahead, the dog just didn't want to work that hard that day (perhaps, again, saving me from difficulties). She was getting older and should have been retired years earlier, but she was a rescue and I couldn't part with her so I began to work to the dog's limitations. We made a lovely team until her death last year to kidney failure in old age.

We left ours set up overnight behind a big hedge and went to use it the next morning and some thief had dismantled and closed it all up, put the wheels on and drove off with it. It was never seen again and a very expensive total loss.

Beautiful heads on your mule lambs; their ears remind me of those on a red kangaroo. Are the cheviot crosses as crazy as a cheviot? My experience was they'd just as happily go through you as around you. Not a good choice for working with in a barn or small paddocks but such good moms, they are great on large pastures. Funny seeing Jock back inside his mom!

How do you get rid of that reed style grass that the sheep do not eat? do you get goats to eat it, dig it out, cut it off or just leave it?

Ya know there always has to be one that does acrobats when you are moving them. Don’t know how many times moving sows out or feeder pigs out there always has to be the one that does something crazy. ❤️

I would kill for a trailer like that, but they don't exist in America. How tall is each level? Whats the hydraulic setup like for the bottom ramp?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  2 года назад +2

Not sure of height but a mule ewe can stand up in it no problem. No hydraulic it's just a wee gas strut on either side like. Cheers

Interesting meaty crossbreed. Shorter legs, big and beefy in the hams and the chest. No wool on lower legs, clean. Clean bums. Nice to look at and watch in the flock.
A kg or so of rolled cracked grain for the pulled lambs for several days quiets them down and they don't loose any weight by going off feed from stress. You become their ewe.
Newer breeds of sheep are such stressed fragile creatures especially the crazy lambs.
We used Australian shepherds for the sheep. Got a breeding strain that was so high strung, some of them would chase any sheep out of the fences on their own. Killed a couple from deep bite wounds on the neck. We had to start penning the dogs up.
Love the sheep dogs "Hounds"?? in your vids. that run the backs of the sheep penning and chuting the woolies. Saves so much work
My favorite way of eating lamb, kabob skewers over hot charcoal and a glass of single malt
Hope you find a way to ship and market all that outstanding black and colored wool to the USA. Knitting here is a huge craze. The natural dark wools are prized. Wife goes crazy everytime she sees a black sheep.
