Girls Room Renovation

- This week I continue with my renovation of the playroom that is converting to a bedroom.
I started by drawing a hexagon 17" high on foam board and cutting it out with my razor. The rest of the products I used are the following:
2' Task Force level
1.41" Frog Tape
Behr Premium Color Sample - Flat - Deep Base (not tinted)
Behr Premium Satin in 120B-6 Watermelon Pink
Behr Premium Satin color matched to Valspar 1001-3B Purple Phantom
Behr Premium Satin color matched to Panton 16-4728 Peacock Blue
These were the darkest shades I used. To get the lighter shades, I mixed with Behr Satin Ultra Pure White paint. The middle shades were in a ratio of 2:1 color to white. The lightest colors were at the very least 1:1. The pink and blue took a bit more white to lighten up.
Little tip I learned in art class. If you want to make a lighter shade of say purple, always add tablespoon by tablespoon of purple to the lighter shade because the purple has more pigment and it will help you not waste so much paint!!!!

I especially like how the hexagons wrap around the corner, rather than being flush with the corner. Very nice.
And for everyone who would "choose different colors," I'm pretty sure this is meant only as a tutorial and you are welcome to choose your own palette! :)

It would probably look a bit better if the wall had been painted white before the honey comb was taped to make colors pop and I would have used a smaller color palette.
I agree and i would also use a smaller palette but her daughters seems to be pretty young, when i was younger i chose a lime green and baby pink i liked it at first but i grew out of it
Yeah, I didn't like the grey original colour of the wall :/ I still think it looks beautiful, though!

that looks INCREDIBLE. my dad redecorated my room not that long ago. at the time I thought it looked pretty good. but now, not so much. My room looks pretty plain and boring next to that design. amazing!😍😊😊😊😊😊😊❤
Tip for sealing your painters tape before painting: use a damp cloth on the wall just before you tape and run it over the tape afterwards. The Behr base you used is not ready to paint. It actually needs water added (gotten from the tint) in order to be viable enough to last on the walls. If you're using just these deep and medium bases you're getting a weak base coat and when you start wiping down the walls to clean them the paint is more likely to fail wherever you had this base underneath.
The main reason for bleeding on any tape would be texture on the walls. Orange peel is the most common texture and it's really difficult to get around the bleeding because of all the hills and divots. The damp cloth helps with this because it causes the glue to seal against the wall and form into the cracks easier.

Glad you liked it. I think it really makes a statement in a room. Good luck with your project. I think varying shades of grey would be beautiful. I did mine random but I have also seen this done from dark to light so that is an option. Either way, I love this pattern and I think it looks great.

If you painted the room black before it, then put the tape. And used neon instead of pastel colors. Imagine a black light, too? That would be MY style!

i think it looks really pretty but i think it would have looked even better if the walls were white before you did the hexagons. it would have given it a really pretty contrast imo

if i ever found enough energy to do this i would of done a diamond pattern the same way you did the honeycomb style and fill water balloons with paint and throw them at the wall

I have textured walls at home and in order to my to keep the paint from bleeding I have to push the tape down again before I paint on a seal coat. I have noticed that the tape has a tendency to lift a little due to my walls being textured. The room looks awesome! Thank you!
Mine are textured too. That is why I took a rag and really pushed down the edges and then added the clear base to seal the edges before starting to paint. Frog Tape is the only type I have not had a problem with bleeding.

Katie Stanley A friend of mine did something similar, he painted the walls in his kids room white and then dipped tennis balls in various bright colors and threw them against the wall. Came out pretty cool looking and just had the touch up the center of each impact point.

Julia Oh A lot of people comment on the background color. Basically it was the color of the entire room and I just added the detail on 2 of the walls. It was the color I had so I just went with it and saved myself the cost of a gallon of paint.

Bobby Tdcs I think just the one color would be great as well. You're right, the honeycomb pattern is enough to really make it a focal wall as is. If it were for an adult space I definitely wouldn't have done all the colors I did. It would even work doing the background (the lines) in semi-gloss paint and the other parts in a flat of the same color (or reverse) for a subtle but noticeable pattern.
BeuTful Agreed, However I must admit the choice of palette for honeycomb pattern is a really tough job its not easy to make it noticeable even in google image search I couldn't find any better options then yours ....

I admire your patience. The pattern is cool, but I must say, it looked far better and cheerful with the white combs in between the darkish monotone. When you scroll along the bar of the video, and see the difference of when you have the white primer and when you had painted over it, there was a big difference.

i think it would be better with 1 neutral and 1 or 2 bright colors to complement and painting the wall all white behind it would have made it stand out more, but overall for a kids room its great since they like bright and loud colors.

DIY Craftygamergirl Thanks so much for your nice comment. You have to try Frog Tape for your next painting project. It has definitely been the best tape I have ever used for preventing bleeding. I just picked up another roll today!

+Jordan Jones The reason I did it on two of the walls was because my daughters bunk bed was going up against the wall as well as a bookcase so a lot of the pattern would be hidden. If she had a regular bed that wouldn't have taken up as much wall space, I would have just stuck with the wall.
Idea is good. But the room loked more gorgeous with the tape, without painting...

Where did u know to put the first hexagon
+Smoking Tech I found the center of the wall between my baseboard and ceiling and then ran a horizontal strip of tape at that point using a level. Then I measured the center of the tape and put my template there and just started working my way out from there.

I can't quite remember. It was around 1 week or so. I only worked on it a little each day so I wouldn't get overwhelmed. Thanks for the comment.
