What kills me is that I never see anyone talk about the harmonies of these videos. I don't feel like going through the effort of mapping it all out, but you can hear it go from octave, fifths, fourth, and other chords (mainly diminished and augmented), it's so fascinating to hear
you can see the harmonic sequence in the timestamps too, adding a semitone each time. halfway through 5:00 is 2nds, a third through 3:20 is minor 3rds, quarter through 2:30 is major 3rds, etc
This is a good visual representation of how sound frequencies work, even if the audible tones presented here get higher with a longer period and deeper with a shorter period. I almost wish he'd do another animation with 13 moving balls: the lowest would play a tone at 220 Hz, the highest would move at double the speed and play a tone at 440 Hz, and all the others would play semitones based on fractional periods of the upper-most and lower-most tones. We'd be able to see visually with the octaves (top and bottom tones), they would always hit the walls at the exact same time, though the one at the top would make two trips while the one on the bottom would make one trip. The eighth ball from the bottom (the fifth) would hit the opposite wall on his third trim across the screen just as the bottom ball completed its second trip across the screen. You'd start to see how the semitones of the scale line up with the base tone based on the ratio of their frequencies: 1:2 for the octave, 3:2 for the perfect fifth, 4:3 for the perfect fourth, 5:3 for the major sixth, etc. The balls that hit the walls simultaneously sound the best when played together, which is the basis for why some musical chords sound nice and others don't. A visual representation of the circle of fifths and equal temperament by frequency.
You can see the resonant frequencies, or resonant points. for example, at 5:00 halfway through the 10min video, half of the orbs hit each wall in a straight line. at the end of the video, the cycle has completed and we're back to one full line again. at 2:30 we have 4 lines as apposed to 2 lines at the halfway point. this is obviously because we're at the 4th harmonic, so there are 4 lines to match it. this whole system is essentially mirrored at 5:00, meaning that what you see before 5min will be the same but mirrored of what you see after 5 min. this would lead us to conclude that at 7:30 halfway between 5min and 10min we will find another harmonic, the same as the 4th, and we do. here are a few more harmonic points, eighth harmonics: 1:153:456:158:45 third harmonics: 3:196:39 fifth harmonics: 2:004:006:008:00
