NSMB had really tight level design, that many of the later games felt lacking. Perhaps it was the limitations of the small screen, but almost everything presented to the player felt fairly introduced, while I distinctly recall Wii and especially Wii U often relied on large jumps or platforms with odd physics across gaps for difficulty, which failed to play to the mario gameplay loops strengths. So honestly, I think this level design review really highlights the amount of clear thought went into the decisions that went into this game, *very* purposeful.
I know why I am:Official Mario game levels deserve to be analyzed. firstly I saw a Mario level analyzing video is in Game Design Toolkit, but it's only one level. Then I keep finding a level-by-level 2D Mario design analyzing series, finally ZoomZike meets my needs.
With the whirlpool in 6-5, I think the "hint" it gives you is that there's a ceiling above it and a bottomless pit below it. In other words, the only direction it *can* take you is down.
19:58 I think the blocks were there to block people from getting the star coin by just walking from behind, (going under the part where you slide through the block and just retrieving it from the other side) and the blocks breaking was to let whoever actually got the star coin progress. It’s just there to make people actually do the challenge instead of just letting them walk around. It definitely would’ve been better if those were blocks you deactivated yourself after you got the star coin, either through a switch block or a normal P-switch, but that seems to be the intended purpose
25:04 If take that upper route, you _can_ see how the top row of ground tiles has the same design as other open floors in castles, whereas a solid wall stretching above the screen wouldn’t have those light gray bricks at the top, which I think is enough indication, really.
While I see your point and actually noticed it myself, it'd be harder to see on a small DS screen, which also has glare that our monitors don't have as much of a problem with. It feels more like an oversight rather than a tell.
for the bit at 24:45, for me personally the fact that you can get that high and see the top of the moving concrete, along with the top part of the "ceiling" is more than enough evidence for a secret. I haven't played this game since I was a kid and genuinely don't remember any of the star coin locations, but just looking at that screen I instantly had the urge to jump up there
If you look really closely at the end of 6-Castle, you’ll notice the faint shadow of the floor where the Star Coin is. It’s still really well hidden, but not entirely without a hint.
25:10 So, you would have preferred that they gave a bit of an indicator that there was a star coin up there, however, I actually kinda like obscure little secrets like this. I love that feeling of accidently stumbling upon a secret in a video game!
@@TTB08 He probably left it at his aunt's house, lost between couch cushions maybe? He probably only goes there once every few years so we just gotta be patient
Monty Tank has to be the coolest boss in the New Soup series. Not only does he build on a mechanic from his world, the rotating blasters, but you have to adapt your strategy to nail the final hit. Even his death animation is unique and cool!
While you make a good point about players thinking the whirlpool might shoot them up due to their experience with the tornado, there's also a good indication to think otherwise: there's a ceiling above the whirlpool, meaning *nowhere to be shot up to,* and there's a pit underneath it, meaning *somewhere to be sucked down to.*
3:48 I disagree, I think the fact that it's a thin and tall sandpit in the middle of mostly level sand pits makes it stand out enough, and the fact that there's no other things to get up there draws your attention to why it was place there makes it stand out enough that players would want to explore it.
I could find multiple examples of mechanics throughout the game standing out in quirky ways like this so I don't feel like that's enough justification to directing a player towards this route, _especially_ when you consider that they'll die if they're wrong.
@@zoomzike while i agree that the mechanic of sand hiding a warp zone like that should be more telling, i think the solution said in the video involving a pipe would just ignore that mechanic they were trying to show off in the first place, being the sand pit warp zones i think a better solution could be something like a black fade in the sand pit to drive home "hey this sand pit isnt like like the others". perhaps if it was possible they could have also placed coins over the sand but also inside the pit itself so there was a reward to exploring what could be down there
Always loved this world as a kid. Got weirdly scared by there being two tower levels; and played the lakitu level over and over again. So nice that Luigi would dismantle the monty military complex in this world, he's a true people's hero, our Comrade Luigi Mario
I've always had mixed feelings about how the devs dealt with mountain worlds. I like the variety of themes but I really liked the mountain levels so I wanted there to be more of those in this world. At least we got three of them (plus W8-7). I believe Wii only had two mountain levels and 2 didn't even have a mountain world!
Thank you so much for this series. This is the best intensive crash course on game design on RUclips. I marathoned them all nonstop today, and I was heartbroken to discover there are no more. Very well, I plan to take the lessons from this and apply them to my Mario Maker levels. I hope someday you finish the last worlds. My sub is more than well earned a hundred times over. Stay awesome.
It's also interesting that you can see the top part of the above moving concrete when it's at the lowest point. If you couldn't walk above it there wouldn't be a reason for that cut off, so it's a pretty good hint that jumping over works
This is my _absolute favorite_ world in NSMB. The variety of platforming and the variance in styles in a lot of the levels is just so nice to look at and play and I've been so excited to see you upload this vid :)
I really hope this isn't the end of the series. World 7 has some really cool levels in it. I'd really like to see you cover it. Oh and world 8 exists I guess...
It's not likely something you'd catch without a direct comparison, but the tornadoes which lift you up rotate counterclockwise, while the whirlpools which suck you down actually rotate clockwise. It's a little hint to show you that they have opposite functions. I think you're mostly supposed to intuit the whirlpool's deadly nature given that it's above a menacing hole in the floor, though.
I have always liked mountainous video game levels. I guess it's why I have a soft spot for World 6 in these NSMB games (except NSMB2 because it's weird)
Nsmb2 mountain theme is barely used, only one level of w5 have mountains and another level that I can't remember They should have made w6 like half-mountain and half-sky instead

25:12 I remember when I played this level, I noticed that I could see the edge of the moving stone platform on the ceiling, which indicated to me that I could land on it. It felt so rewarding to find the star coin that way, but I do agree that if they showed the star coin was there before you entered the door that would make for a great hint for those who missed it.
25:00 while you don't see the star coin you can see that the bricks at the top right are actually a bit darker than the rest which is hints to the secret star coin

I wasn't even aware that 6-6 had a secret 1-UP Mushroom area. The spot at which you would even notice it is so unassuming. Goes to show that even after 16 years, there are still little things like that which can be discovered by the average player.
Hey Zoomzike, nice vid, in the 6-2 you mentioned Wet Dry World and i though it would be cool if you did a similar series like this but instead with each Mario 64 level and its stars
25:04 there is a part of the “ceiling” that is darker than the rest. This shade is the same as the floor, hinting there is a room or something up there.
I love your videos so much. I just saw a video recommended to me and it was an hour long, I didn’t want to watch it until I saw it was YOUR video!!!! Thank you for teaching me all sorts of shit about games, I love this content so much
25:11 I have to disagree with the fact there is no indicator to show it's there. Around 25:00 where you are at the door you can clearly see at the top of the screen that the last 6 blocks from the right have a darker and different coloration from the rest of the tiles both to left and bottom of it, indicating for the player that there is something up there for you to grab.
the thing about the tornado and whirlpool to consider, is one is above land that you would normally stand on, and another is above a bottomless pit in the ocean, which in turn gives the player a chance to think if theres a reason that it is above a bottomless pit compared to before. tho having air bubbles getting sucked down wouldnt be a bad thing to show. or better yet, place coins at the very top of it so players are more likely to go for it, and if they get sucked in, they have plenty of time to button mash to stay alive.
i never realized that world 6 is a combination of all of the worlds before! it makes it feel like a final test of the stuff you've learned so far, (before the final final test of world 8 and the final final final test being the final castle) oh, and another detail i like about this world is the boss, on top of it just being cool, it also calls back to the rotating bullet bill blasters from the 6-1,
Fun fact: If you activate the challenge mode and try to get the third star coin in this world's castle, you will get trapped and forced to restart the level.
With 6-Castle there is kind of an indicator for the 3rd star coin that you glossed over and said. The concrete blocks clearly have a white bit on top. With the 2 moving blocks with the upper leading to the star coin, observant players would notice notice this texture and think to take a look.
I don't know why but I am addicted to these breakdowns of the SMB worlds level by level, concept by concept. Good stuff!

I love your videos so much. I just saw a video recommended to me and it was an hour long, I didn’t want to watch it until I saw it was YOUR video!!!! Thank you for teaching me all sorts of shit about games, I love this content so much
If I realized that he never finished I probably wouldn’t have watched the first 6 parts
Another nostalgic video to watch while in a line in Disney World!
25:11 I have to disagree with the fact there is no indicator to show it's there. Around 25:00 where you are at the door you can clearly see at the top of the screen that the last 6 blocks from the right have a darker and different coloration from the rest of the tiles both to left and bottom of it, indicating for the player that there is something up there for you to grab.
the thing about the tornado and whirlpool to consider, is one is above land that you would normally stand on, and another is above a bottomless pit in the ocean, which in turn gives the player a chance to think if theres a reason that it is above a bottomless pit compared to before. tho having air bubbles getting sucked down wouldnt be a bad thing to show. or better yet, place coins at the very top of it so players are more likely to go for it, and if they get sucked in, they have plenty of time to button mash to stay alive.
i never realized that world 6 is a combination of all of the worlds before! it makes it feel like a final test of the stuff you've learned so far, (before the final final test of world 8 and the final final final test being the final castle)
oh, and another detail i like about this world is the boss, on top of it just being cool, it also calls back to the rotating bullet bill blasters from the 6-1,
Saw a Mario movie ad before this video. Fitting, right?
Fun fact: If you activate the challenge mode and try to get the third star coin in this world's castle, you will get trapped and forced to restart the level.
19:27, you forgot to mention if you have a mini-mushroom that right pipe blasts you right into a star coin
This and World 8 are my favorite. It was so visually unique to me as a kid compared to mario games from years before
Still got nostalgia memories of repeatedly taking the mini mushroom into 6-2, was always fun to be able to walk along with the changing water level!
With 6-Castle there is kind of an indicator for the 3rd star coin that you glossed over and said. The concrete blocks clearly have a white bit on top. With the 2 moving blocks with the upper leading to the star coin, observant players would notice notice this texture and think to take a look.
guys i think we should watch the previous video with the mini mushroom to unlock the seventh
