No rock hoppers, no rope, no life jacket, completely unsuitable conditions to fish. Can't think of anything else he could have done wrong. Lucky he's got a sensible mate watching his back.
dont need a rope , those cleated shoes can be more detrimental to your life than a good pair of grippy joggers , i at times just wear socks , they have more grip . in simple terms the guy shouldnt have been fishing there . nothing freaky about the waves , was a set 4 of the waves were big the 5th well bigger , typical set .
I think this father woukd have died infront of his son if the good friend wasnt there. He gave good advice and you could tell the dad was going to risk his life for the backpack and you can tell he changed his mind because the friend was so insistant to let it go. I think he saved his life using just words
Yes, very important. The idiot stayed there defying the Ocean while the child and his friend were worried. You can hear in his voice that he was worried.
Why would even go there when you know that before you realize the water can come from both sides and just take you... seems very very stupid to me. For fishing nevertheless, as if anything can be caught in those waves..
The warning and the advice probably saved his life. Hope he learned that even he sometimes misjudge the risks he takes, and to think before acting. Excellent video. Should be watched by more people who go out on rocks by the ocean.
Cant stress enough about how important safety is in these types of situations i lost a friend earlier this year because of a freak wave and miss him very much be safe guys
@0 1 too prove it I'll need help from an idiot. So whenever you are ready we can go to a beach that I have seen alot of people drowned at. And I'll prove to you my point .
Your not smart enough to even respond with something that makes sense . You first. .go ahead mess with the ocean dumbass. The world won't miss another idiot that thinks he is cool second guessing the ocean. . you first. Ok dumbass
Never fish on a break wall....because you cant see the waves behind you....rather the waves come in on direction in front of you where you can at lease see and judge.
If camera man wasn't there I'm pretty sure he would of tried grabbing that dumb backpack. Doesn't even look thankful that the ocean would of showed him NO mercy in front of his kid.....
You could see Wayne lookin at his gear and wondering if I could just sprint to save it … the little fella's screeching saved the old fella , good on ya little fella !
Brilliant video. Great insight into how these fisherman die every month around Australia. A gnarly fishing spot on a swell. All that energy channeled into that gully and sweeping over the top, from behind where your not looking or can see it coming. Glad everyone survived. Poor boy could have been scarred for life watching his dad die before his eyes
I've been watching freak wave vids for a couple days now and this is the first one I've seen where; a) the potential victim was actually keeping an eye on the swell coming in, and, b) where the camera man actually tells potential victim to get out of there instead of just filming them being swept out to sea.
It's easy to see waves coming, but it dangerous if you don't recognise the surge. The other problem was there was water behind him as well as in front.
No such thing as a 'freak' wave - just waves. Super work by your observer - excellent advice ! Never allow waves behind you, never have your gear in danger - even if it's 50m away, always have a familiar well-trod escape route - plan, plan, plan, enjoy.
You can judge the size of the wave from the angle of the slopes 3 to 4 sets back. And leave the area minutes before you get swallowed. Also noticed water where he was standing. Lots of red flags.
A quote from Dean from over 40 years spearfishing, the South Coral Sea, Great Barrier Reef, Montebello’s & the Houtman Abrolhos Islands in West Australia. "No fish is worth a life". If you get washed in, where are you going to get out? That question has to be asked & here in these conditions there is no exit point!
I was watching another video about rogue waves and the WRH was one wave which severely damaged a lighthouse not far away from England. The building and tower housing the light was positioned 220 feet above the sea. Food for thought.
If you don't like your life and your family, it's fine but don't waste taxpayers money to recover your body. This is a most idiotic act I have seen. Lucky there was someone smarter than him around, telling him what not to do.
I was once washed off rocks by a big rogue wave that came during low tide! It was first big wave for at least an hour and must have been 10 feet high. it just came and lifted me up. Luckily it swept me along the rocks and dropped me where i could grab hold as the water receded.
I love to play around and get all wet with sneaker waves provided it is a beach area but when it comes to an area like the one in the video or any rocky area, I don’t fool around. A place like the one in the video, I like to leave a really good margin of safety. There are some situations where you can get away with doing something, other situations you do not mess around. The situation in the video is an example of one you don’t want to mess with.
Life vest! Life vest! Seriously, I bought one today, not the inflatable one as they may fail during a crucial time. I plan to go rock fishing or maybe just shore fishing this weekend, I might look like an idiot wearing it, but I don't trust the ocean really well.
It look apparent to me that the ocean was definitely trying to get this man because as soon as he ran to higher ground the wave ceased coming onto the rocks where he was originally standing. Gee whiz that was a very close call that could have actually ended his life.
Hey kinloy, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) :) Cheers, Felix
No rock hoppers, no rope, no life jacket, completely unsuitable conditions to fish. Can't think of anything else he could have done wrong. Lucky he's got a sensible mate watching his back.
but he could of caught a 60 cm pink snapper

Hey how you doing?
indeed what a stupid fisherman
Agree!!! ❤
That's an important lesson, "let it go!"
Yes, very important. The idiot stayed there defying the Ocean while the child and his friend were worried. You can hear in his voice that he was worried.
Especially with that accent. Life advice
Why would even go there when you know that before you realize the water can come from both sides and just take you... seems very very stupid to me. For fishing nevertheless, as if anything can be caught in those waves..
Hey how you doing?
Can't hold it back anymore!!!!
The warning and the advice probably saved his life. Hope he learned that even he sometimes misjudge the risks he takes, and to think before acting. Excellent video. Should be watched by more people who go out on rocks by the ocean.
jw934 yeah exactly.
Hey how you doing?
That guy was seconds away from dying. Imagine if he was still 10 yards from where he was, he wouldve been swept for sure.
Hey how you doing?
I am feeling bad for the kid, he keeps shouting to his dad .. come up , come up and poor lad is just ignored
Hey how you doing?
Cant stress enough about how important safety is in these types of situations i lost a friend earlier this year because of a freak wave and miss him very much be safe guys
never ever turn your back or second guess the ocean, she will take you away like a fart in the wind.
Your sick
@0 1 too prove it I'll need help from an idiot. So whenever you are ready we can go to a beach that I have seen alot of people drowned at. And I'll prove to you my point .

Hey how you doing?
Good on you reinforcing the 'let it go'. That guy needed it, probably kept him from getting hurt. Good on you mate.
Hey how you doing?
Why fish of then rocks when there is a lot of plenty good spots to fish of New Zealand
If camera man wasn't there I'm pretty sure he would of tried grabbing that dumb backpack.
Doesn't even look thankful that the ocean would of showed him NO mercy in front of his kid.....
Luis Heredia You're right. He was being very stupid unlike the camera man.
Hey how you doing?
The silence from Wayne says it all really
It’s not a freak wave, it’s a regular wave for those conditions. Completely unsuitable for fishing
I bloody hate these people who'd dare anything just to make them look fearless...
Gari Coupeur exactly
Great comment. No fear means no courage. Not having fear means you are stupid.
Hey how you doing?
Looks like Wayne doesn’t listen too well.
Wayne tried really hard to win the Darwin award
You could see Wayne lookin at his gear and wondering if I could just sprint to save it … the little fella's screeching saved the old fella , good on ya little fella !

No jacket no shoes. What do you expect if he gets washed out.
When the sea is like that , so violent , you don t stay so close
This guy is lucky, he was saved by few seconds. Had he not come back immediately after the first wave, he couldn't have seen this video ever
I've been watching freak wave vids for a couple days now and this is the first one I've seen where;
a) the potential victim was actually keeping an eye on the swell coming in, and,

Unbelievable. Dude probably doesn´t even realize how close he got to death.
maybe after watching the video but saying that he is a New Zealander and they are quite special
Smartest person: Obviously the little guy in the cliffs above. :)
Human genius has its limits, but stupidity does not
How stupid can we be that some of us have to wait until the very last minute to run for our lives?
That's called the tide is coming in. People don't know about danger of water and how fast it can kill you.
Did you see the Darwin award floating on the crest of that wave? He was trying to catch it
He was about to risk his life for that bloody bag
He was more interested in fishing than saving is life!Smh
Darwin Award aspirant.
Love the kid. hahah He's WAY up there! Well done. Not worth the risk.
Hey how you doing?
It's easy to see waves coming, but it dangerous if you don't recognise the surge. The other problem was there was water behind him as well as in front.
That guy standing on the rock was ready to die and tempting fate
No such thing as a 'freak' wave - just waves. Super work by your observer - excellent advice ! Never allow waves behind you, never have your gear in danger - even if it's 50m away, always have a familiar well-trod escape route - plan, plan, plan, enjoy.
And that Kiddies is how you wind up getting Washed In and Drowning while Rock Fishing.....
He was lucky to be standing where he was and not where that wave direct impacted lmao
Those are not "freak" waves but just a normal set.
You can judge the size of the wave from the angle of the slopes 3 to 4 sets back. And leave the area minutes before you get swallowed. Also noticed water where he was standing. Lots of red flags.
2:28 The kid is sitting to way up that rock. Good thing he didn't fell..
Hey how you doing?
Friends did well in encouraging the guy to leave the fish. The boy has good sense.
Life jackets should be mandatory for rock fishing like this
Then wear one when you fish on rocks.
They are here in Australia now. Too many lives lost.
Freak Fisherman Catches Wave

Oh this is a future Darwin award winner. Wayne, i hope wisdom penetrates your brain sooner than later.
Hi kinloy, is it possible to get in touch with you to discuss using this video in an educational production? Greetings
The rocks are wet already...there’s been waves before there does he not look at the clues ?
That’s the kid put off fishing for life.
I was watching another video about rogue waves and the WRH was one wave which severely damaged a lighthouse not far away from England. The building and tower housing the light was positioned 220 feet above the sea.
Food for thought.
He's so desperate for a Darwin award.
Am I a terrible person if I kinda wanted him to get caught in the waves after the cameraman told him to let it go like 5 times?
#1 clue. Don't go on the rocks where it is really wet because another wave will come where the water has been.
If you don't like your life and your family, it's fine but don't waste taxpayers money to recover your body. This is a most idiotic act I have seen. Lucky there was someone smarter than him around, telling him what not to do.
Lost the fish but you are alive ...
So did he catch anything or lose it all?
Wow that wave! Great footage 👍
wave catches freak fisherman
wayne would be dead if it were not for his smart friend
I was once washed off rocks by a big rogue wave that came during low tide!
It was first big wave for at least an hour and must have been 10 feet high.
it just came and lifted me up.
Luckily it swept me along the rocks and dropped me where i could grab hold as the water receded.
Where is this enchanting place?
Biggest materialistic soldier of God.
Always keep one eye on those king waves being a surfer I quickly worked that one out never under estimate the ocean peoples!!!!!!!
I know this guy it's Wayne Kerr
0:50 could have easily gone the other way. Lucky to be alive.
No such thing as a "freak" wave.
This is how a friend of mine died. Police divers found his body in a hole near the sea bed.
Good call by your mate
Could we use this video in a fishing safety post? Might just have to beep out a few words :)
And this kiddies is how you wind up dead fishing from the rocks....
Oh man. I was hoping he would get swept away and then drown.
I love to play around and get all wet with sneaker waves provided it is a beach area but when it comes to an area like the one in the video or any rocky area, I don’t fool around. Definately good risk reward trading your life for $50 bucks worth of fish. Please dont breed.
jaxamillian1.....definitely. With an i. Please don't breed.
Life vest! Life vest!
Seriously, I bought one today, not the inflatable one as they may fail during a crucial time. I plan to go rock fishing or maybe just shore fishing this weekend, I might look like an idiot wearing it, but I don't trust the ocean really well.
Where is this place?
Judging by the accent they're from New Zealand
since when were lifewest a bad idea?
Where is this ?
What Ocean is this ?
These guys have an accent.
Father Of The Year/Darwin Awards Wayne is your leading contender
New Zealand? Australia? Tasmania?
It look apparent to me that the ocean was definitely trying to get this man because as soon as he ran to higher ground the wave ceased coming onto the rocks where he was originally standing. Gee whiz that was a very close call that could have actually ended his life.
why?
Hey kinloy, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) :) Cheers, Felix
I was fishing once and it was flat all day and a freak wave came through 2 metter I lost rods and some gear .
that swells is dangerous...
Imaging that, the tide comes in? Who woulda thought?
Trying to out smart a sneaker wave the end result is your life . This is crazy shit ,not even a life jacket on lol
...? how did a wave catch him? ...
How to be stupid.
Some people just think they know everything
dont play with the ocean.....that fishs not worth enough
Re-titles: Stupid fisherman gets lucky.
The boy up on the cliff is the smartest of the 3
Don't risk your life .. you can get fish in shops now.!
So smart, no life jacket
You know, they sell fish at stores.
I wouldnt be around this bloke if he was lighting BBQ
Bad risk assessment?
Ol wayne was a couple seconds away from being kaka
The kid has the right idea...
That kid will be an orphan before long👍
Kids very smart.
The dude is insane.
He has no safety equipment at all
