She probably got in because she is academically good and knows her stuff, but failed during the academic year because she couldn't cope with the education system, which is vastly different and makes quite a difference. if you're used to the american education system then, oh boy, are you going to struggle HARD in a strict system that korea and asia follow. i have personally had many of my friends go to USA/Canada and tell me its so much easie there and less peer pressure than back here.

Maybe they did and she did pass. And to be fair to her, passing college exams and being at a college getting a degree are two completely different things, maybe it applies to this situation as well.
No this is actually a part of the show where I know people who can relate 😭 A lot of foreign students get into International Filipino high schools but they start to find the material challenging later on. I can’t actually remember if Kitty was on a scholarship, but it’s just not out of the ordinary for scholars to get dropped from their programs either, or for people who get into Ivy league schools to realize it wasn’t for them

The most american thing I felt in this show, is the sterotipical "public humiliation" scenario that is common in high school movies. I will never understand why shows try to makes us believe, young teenagers love to film and make fun of other people when they fall or trip on the floor. That's not embarrassing it's human. It can happen to anyone.
Its not even stereotypical people will record a nd kid for being nd and just talking. They would def make fun of a girl for falling in a cupcake tower 😭
as someone living & working in korea... actually that sounds incredibly korean 😅 bullying here is very extreme & a huge issue even into adulthood & work places. people here LOVE to film others & post it online to mock & bully them. not just tripping over either, things like how they eat, or how they walk, how they hold their pencils, etc. it happens a lot.
The only thing which “confused” me is, the whole or almost the whole reason for her being in Korea and at kiss is because she wanted to get closer to her mom but at the end of the day she didn’t even really care and the whole point of going was just to be with dae or not even.

I feel like the whole "falling in love with yuri" plot would have made way more sense if it happened after that scene where they were like, bonding over their mothers past at professor lee's house. The fact that kitty starts having a crush on yuri because of a 2 minute dj session while she still thinks yuri stole her boyfriend makes absolutelly no sense.

I SO agree with dae's character being just there and forgotten like he's supposed to be the main love interest but nah he was reduced to an "I can explain" guy and the WHOLE SEASON kitty was angry at him and by the time they finally got together, she's cheating like girl he deserves better
She didn’t cheat though and she deserved better, he got into a fake relationship during the summer remember, well by that time Kitty had already been in a relationship with him for three years, and Yuri had the audacity to basically say she was the side piece and Dae didn’t stop her.

I am the target demographic for this show and they just missed so badly😭I think the show only appealed to people that were just recently being interested in the country, you know, when you go through that cringy phase where everything is new, fun and overall perfect
well s.korea is only great for vacation because their food is yummy and with big portion and the transportation also great too,so many nice cafe and shopping place😊
I just feel like this is not the Kitty from TATBIHLB. All of us came to love that character and hence wanted a spinoff. Instead, we got this mess🤦♀️ Kitty was a smart, witty person.
Fr! her character in the show seemed completely different. Like in the movies her "matchmaking personality" was cute and kind of funny but in the show she was cringy and borderline irritating
My issues with the show? 1. 6,000 freaking storylines that are so awkwardly distributed with screen time. You have Kitty trying to find a secret half sibling, her issues with Dae, Yuri coming out, Q finding out about Florián’s secrets, Min Ho and Madison, Min Ho and his mom, Yuri and her mom, literally anything with Alex and Professor Lee, Yuri and Juliana, Yuri and Kitty, Dae and Min Ho’s friendship, the Han Hotel scandal, the list goes on. The show is terrible at telling you what you should be focusing on at the moment because they try to weave in every storyline with each other at the same time. 2. The characters. Kitty was one of the best characters in To All The Boys but in this show? She is basically just Lara Jean 2.0. She was the voice of reason to get Lara Jean’s head out of her butt with her melodramatic and over-the-top issues. Here she is so obsessed with everyone else’s business, practically destroyed a family because she knew too much, and was so self centered. It really made it hard to root for her. Dae was alright, he was a nice guy and was a good person, but he was boring and I really didn’t care about the fake relationship between him and Yuri nor did I care about him and Kitty reconciling. Q was the typical gay best friend, but at least he had some personality with him, and he was funny. Yuri was awful, like Kitty, she can’t help but stick her nose in everyone’s business and actively makes things hard on everyone around her and causes drama. Min Ho was the only character I liked, he was over the top but was a fun presence in the show. He was funny and had a lot of heart, and a true bro to Q and Dae, which I was far more interested in than anything with Kitty. I just know that Kitty isn’t going to choose Min Ho, I just hope they don’t do him dirty. Other characters were meh, Jina was fine, Alex was fine, Professor Lee was actually kinda interesting, I had teachers like him. Juliana was boring, same with Florián, Madison, who got a lot of screen time for some reason. Kitty’s mom is the most underdeveloped character. She’s dead, but the whole goddamn trip was to learn more about her, I still know nothing about Eve Song. 3. The tone and plot. The tone of this show is all over the place. It wants to be melodramatic while being super comedic with a soap opera overdose and extremely heartfelt. You can have these things in a show, but you have to balance out when and your timing. It makes the show feel like it takes itself too seriously or doesn’t take the moments that should be taken seriously serious at all. It’s just so messy and the 6,000 storylines just make it that much messier. Things I liked? 1. I appreciate that the Korean characters actually speak primarily in Korean with one another. It really bothers me in shows how the characters of the country hardly speak the language with their peers, but Yuri, Min Ho, and Dae will mostly speak Korean with one another, and with there parents and family, it is far more realistic in that aspect and I appreciate it a lot. But I do think the show is bad at showing the language barrier Kitty should be facing. 2. The soundtrack. I really liked the music in the background of scenes and it was fitting for the moment. Very catchy and added a more fun aspect or goofiness the show lacked in tone and dialogue. 3. The cinematography. The shots in the show were actually pretty neat, albeit very Wattpad and American Girl Goes Traveling. KISS had a beautiful campus and the places they showed in Seoul were pretty, but it’s looks without substance. Thank you those who actually read this monstrosity of a rant 😅
Well it is my opinion, but I REALLY hated the soundtrack, they played the most random K-Pop songs at the weirdest moments. I saw a comment above saying they just searched up 'top K-Pop songs' and just added it 😭. And secondly, the koreans speaking their native language was very less, and one example is Yuri and her mother speaking in english. 99% of the korean characters had their dialogues in korean, even with each other
The main ick i get from Yuri is the fact her family made Dae sign a nondisclosure agreement to prevent him from speaking the truth. This was MANIPULATIVE and should have been a waving red flag, not just to Kitty but for Dae too. edit: THANK YOU ALL FOR THE LIKES! I've never gotten this many likes before
Yeah the fact that the whole family was manipulating Dae for their own personal gain made me so uncomfortable. He wasn't even completely willing to go through with everything, they sort of just dragged him into it.

I live in Korea and I can tell you that here it’s gotten a reception of “????” Especially what you said about schooling. A lot of Koreans are baffled by how there’s any time at all for relationship drama or school dances when they should be studying, though most are chalking it up to “I guess international schools are different.” My husband and I watched one episode (he’s Korean) and immediately we were like “yeah this was not touched by a Korean writer at all.”

It was giving the same energy as how there was criticism of Wednesday and how the school she moved to didn't make sense for the show. Not saying these are similar but international schools are very very different, I have friends who went to Korea and Japan or international school and there’s lots of “free time” or there’s things like dances and they hang out a lot

I couldn't bring myself to finish the show, because it just reminded me of people from my high school Korean class. I'm not Korean, but I learnt Korean through high school, because I had a best friend who was Korean, so we decided to learn each other's languages (Czech and Korean). I have never really been into K-pop or K-dramas but MY GOODNESS my entire Korean class was full of Koreaboos. Every conversation was about K-pop and how they would move to Korea and marry a K-pop star. Although, I have to give them at least some credit for trying to learn Korean (however, they all dropped out after 1st year beginner's classes, because the language wasn't as easy as they thought).

My best friend in 9th grade was raised in the Czech Republic (she actually knew 5 languages) so we always exchanged words because I know Polish. It was really fun.
That’s kinda crazy! When I was in school, it wasn’t until high school that people started liking kpop or Korean dramas a bit more (like 2017), before that- I was told how it was trashy or that it was all the same. But I just find it so interesting how it’s become more accepted in the west- I remember making a PowerPoint introducing kpop in middle school and people made fun of it. 😂 I respect every culture, so I didn’t become a saesang or anything extreme, but I will say I did love kdramas, and not just Korean dramas, but also Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese. Kinda glad that streaming services have some of them though- before I was relying on illegal sites or RUclips to find dramas!
I’m Czech and my uni classmate (friend) is Korean. He’s learning Czech and I’ve been watching a lot of kdramas (which I watched even before I met him), asking him to tell me about Korean culture and mostly him cooking me authentic Korean food ☺️ I’ve never been a fan of kpop but I’m really curious about his culture and he’s adamant on learning Czech to fit in here ❤ he’s honestly been one of my best friends in uni. One doesn’t have to be a Koreaboo to appreciate the culture but also see the realistic/not so good parts of Korean culture.
I really wish they did more with the setting. Like your in SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA! The only part where she used her surrounding to her advantage was when they went on that hike and she saw that hospital from far away, and then we saw her come out of a subway exit to get to that hospital. This whole sequence didn't just service the plot of Kitty and Dae but also the subplot of discovering more about her mom. They should have done more scenes like that where they use Seoul, the surroundings, landmarks, etc. I feel like most of the show was shot indoors, either in that school, at the dorm, in the library, in someones house. They really didn't have to travel all the way to korea for that. I hope next season they utilize Seoul more bc it is a nice city to explore.
I agree about the shots. The exterior shots feel like they were taken at places that could stand in for Korea / Seoul eg Dae's house, the garden. The fact that Kitty never spoke Korean except for annyeong also supports your view
I fully agree on the plot changes, like she switches the love interest 3 times within a span of 10 episodes and it keeps switching back and forth leaving us with nothing.

I think the storytelling was just too convenient and predictable. It was just riddled with common wattpad tropes thus making it an absolute cringefest. I'd say this show was way cringier than your average Kdrama also because it's a young adult show with all the typical YA cheesy plot lines.

The school not doing anything about her disgusting roommate really took me out. Gamer girl was creating a public health crisis for the school. Also, this version of kitty saying she just expects her boyfriend (who is own scholarship) to be her full time translator really made me hate her. Kitty was acting like an entitled American and not in a critiquing way, it was just one of her quarks.
The things that made the least sense imo were: • Dae not explaining anything to Kitty: yes I know there was a NDA involved, but there could have been many ways to tell Kitty about the fake relationship without outing Yuri. • Yuri wanting to break Kitty and Dae: why did she constantly try to ruin their relationship if she didn’t like either of them? not that that would make it any better, but just taking the necklace and basically forbidding Dae of talking things out with Kitty makes absolutely no sense if she was in a pretend relationship. That just makes her an awful person fr. • Minho falling for Kitty: although arguably one of the best characters, it feels so wattpad-y for him to fall for Kitty. She was HIS BESTFRIEND’S EX 😭 And obviously the whole Yuri crush situation out of nowhere- I absolutely agree with everything you said. This show had terrible writing and made no sense even considering the whole “teens might not take the best decisions” factor 💀
Yuri confused me so bad.. in a way I get it because she didn't know kitty and was scared of her probably saying it to someone else but at the same time that doesn't make any sense. She spent half of the first couple episodes attached to Dae by the hip and constantly trying to tear him away from Kitty and for what? I just kept wondering what her issue was because she didn't have feeling for Kitty nor Dae. Her wearing Kitty's mom necklace was really the last straw for me cause what was that about
I agree with everything except the first thing (even though it was highly frustrating for me as well lol); he couldn't even mention the relationship itself because of the NDA, and with the way Yuri and her family are I don't blame the guy for keeping his mouth shut. Who knows what they would've done to him had he told Kitty; and that goes for Kitty's safety too. He did the right thing by not telling, because there's no telling how far that family would've went to keep that fake relationship a secret.

I'm a Korean who goes to an 'elite hs' here and oh my god, XO Kitty really... left me speechless. I was looking forward to seeing it, and it has gone beyond disappointment for the representation part. Just let me tell you, you will end up studying until you die in an actual Korean hs :) If we even enter a different gender's dorm room we'll probably get suspended or sth. I don't mind cringe stuff to a certain extent(guilty pleasure), but this has exceeded Netflix cringe and entered Wattpad cringe lmao
Nah mate, this is an insult to Wattpad, it has surpassed even Wattpad level cringe because I'm sure all of us were teenagers when we wrote those cringe pics but the adults who wrote the show have no excuse.
That’s what happens when Netflix puts so many kdramas on its platform. People get even more obsessed with Korea. (I also watch kdramas but XO, Kitty was crazy cringe. I’ll still watch season 2 but I’ll have to suffer through it like I did with s1, just because I’m curious how much more of a shitshow the writers will make of it 😂)

9:20: Fr, I am abroad in Korea rn for a semester in college and we literally have separate boys and girls dorms, you have to follow a set amount of rules, we have a curfew, and every month you have to pass a room inspection (basically keep shit clean and no contraband; but it is much more intense then American inspections if that makes sense)
Still remember when I commented that she was very Immature for even a high school student people were all like that’s what teenagers do they discover, like I know teenagers are very rebelling but her character was the same as in all the boys I loved like there was no development and the amount of plot twists and love interests was so weird and not needed

Thank you for making this video! I remember when it first came out, I considered watching it but the preview clip that Netflix chose LITERALLY felt like a Wattpad story. It was when Kitty was wearing an oversized shirt in a kitchen or something and she makes out with a guy after he bites her toast or something (going off memory, I didn’t watch the show). I was like “There’s no way this is the actual show”. I abandoned all intentions of watching right then and there 😂
I watched XO, Kittty and then watched someone review it and I was really shocked by how MANY people loved it. The audio also seemed off to me like it was obviously voiced over at parts (or something im not sure 😭) and didnt blend in at all lol and it bothered me a little
i honestly was shocked how many people dont like it. and how many people found it cringe. i didnt cringe at all when i watched it, yeah maybe by 2-3 scenes but thats the case with every show i watch. and also how many people are anti about the yuri kitty thing. i liked, i liked all characters. it was just a fun cute show, thats it

i don't think the only realistic thing in the show was kitty's academic struggles, there was yuri's struggles with her sexual orientation and family issues, kitty missing her mom, dae losing his mom & also having money problems in his household etc. but i agree with everything else you said tbh

I feel like her falling for yuri was just so random and doesn’t really make sense?? Like she dated dae for FOUR years and as soon as all the drama clears up with dae ( which was honestly just a huge red flag especially how he didn’t tell her AT ALL) she finally got to be with him and was finally doing the whole thing she came to Korea to do and the whole plot just kinda changed 😭 also I hated how she was chasing her and was even going to confess even tho yuri obviously was in a committed relationship🤷♀️ there’s nothing wrong with her realizing she likes boys and girls but I feel like it was random especially since she had never showed any interest in girl before yuri and she didn’t have feeling for her until the sex dreams
as messily written as the show may be, i think the sudden-ness of kittys crush on yuri was actually kind of realistic (in a personal sense). finding out that you, as a girl, like other girls isnt necessarily the easiest thing. for me, personally, i realised at around 13, and it wasnt a simple "ah i like girls" kind of thing. its this sort of sudden moment where this one girl, in a different setting, time, and place, looks a little different than usual and from all the others. that, even though youve known this girl for a while, this new way of looking at her has your throat constricted and your mind racing with millions of questions. thats how it happened to me. i hadnt shown interest in girls up until that one moment, so when kitty looked at yuri dj-ing and suddenly had a different look at her, i personally felt that. i know it can come across as confusing and sudden, but i feel like it resonated with many other sapphics along with myself, even though quick and sharp in its development

Yes, I agree with you sm!! The script is very weak and confusing, and it doesn't make any sense to play Kpop songs randomly in almost every scene. Q is the only character that was more sincere than the rest. And yeah, Min Ho is hot but his character is weird like you said.

I definitely see where you’re coming from on the whole pretty much like Emily in Paris front because they have similar storylines fr but at least Emily went to a French class they didn’t even try to let kitty learn Korean 😭 (even tho Emily didn’t learn a damn thing…) hopefully they can get it together in season two because I was so excited when I heard this was coming out and the disappointment I felt was unmatched 😭😭😭
Out of all my issues with the show two completely had me struggling. 1. Kitty's crush on Yuri was out of nowhere. It wasn't *impossible* I guess but at to that point Yuri was very passive aggressive to Kitty ever since the welcome party where SHE TOLD KITTY DAE WAS HER BOYFRIEND. I'm sorry, I just CAN NOT imagine falling for someone that i thought my boyfriend cheated on me with whether i was questioning my sexuality or not! 2. Kitty was not at KISS to be closer to her mom. Yes they tried to circle back to that every time she was about to leave, but they could never really convince me that her need to be closer to her mom outweighed the need to be with Dae. There even some points when i completely forgot that was the reason she was there in the first place ://

as someone who stayed for minho, i have a few things to add~ mostly i agree with you! i'm not even Korean but i watch so many Korean shows, dramas, kpop content, take Korean classes, etc., so i have *some* ideas about what Korea's like as a country/society and this show had me ":O" 85% of the time. in a bad way. in a "this sh*t will never fly in Korea" way. like a parent just telling their teenage kid they want to meet their boyfriend? i half expected Yuri's mom to just yell at her for trying to date at all and work harder on getting into SNU or whatever, that whole "you'll date when you're 25" attitude. which, OK, also may be extreme, but it would have surprised me a lot less. and the dorm thing... GAH. no serious institution, Korean or otherwise, would have just assigned a girl to a dorm without triple, quadruple checking that everything's OK. (the dorm itself also seemed pretty unrealistic, but i give them creative license, this being an international private school and all, maybe they do have the funding for giant spacious apartments for all of their students, as unlikely as it seems to the rest of us.) low-key hated Kitty, she was all over the place, i get that she's 15 and her emotions are a rollercoaster but girl, that was a LOT. and i also hated how heavy they went on the kpop in the soundtrack, it was like a beginners' 2022 kpop playlist and Korea has sooooo much more music than that, not to mention that it wouldn't have killed them to play a western song here and there, the entire world listens to that, including Korea. and the clothes? Kitty, you're going to an official school event, why are you dressed like ITZY at M-countdown? you're a child. but ANYWAY, what i wanted to add about Minho is that i really liked the arc with his mom? it's still very underdeveloped but i like that they showed he acts so cocky and overly confident because he's a lonely child of neglect who doesn't know how to properly express he wants more intimacy from the people he likes because his own family has deprived him of that warmth. the whole secret babies and what not bit was too melodramatic for me but i like Alex as a character and i hope we get to see more of him in S2... aside from him struggling to build a relationship with his birth parents, i also wanna know more about his experience as an overseas Korean trying to fit in, and also as a young teacher trying to find his place in a rigid (supposedly?) institution where his colleagues are old enough to be/are literally his parents.

I feel like actor for dae was the best out of the whole cast. i think it’s cause he has acting experience and he has worked in different shows I remember seeing him in 2521 and he had a minor role but was so good in it realistically he’s the best
as someone who is learning korean i was highkey hoping that like 90% of this show would be in korean (and i would get a chance to practice lol). it's wild that they decided to make everyone speak in english when this basically should've been a show that is entirely in korean. but everyone speaks in english like most of the time?? even yuri and her mom (two korean people) spend most of their time speaking to each other in english?? yuri and dae only switch to korean like a handful of times? i moved schools when i was really little from a school that spoke mostly english to a school that spoke mostly hindi (moved cities, though i think it was actually a class thing - more rich ppl kids went to the first school) and i had a HUGE adjustment. most kids in my new school spoke english fairly well but they just didn't like to talk to me because they didn't want to speak english. my hindi was terrible at the time (i'm a native speaker, i just favour english) and i had to go through an adjustment period where i couldn't really make any friends because i had to improve my hindi. kitty should've had to go through something similar. i can buy that everyone at this school KNOWS english if its some fancy elite international school but basically all of kitty's friends are korean people and they are constantly speaking english. i went to an international school in thailand and everyone knew english but we'd only use english with each other if we didn't have another language in common. all the thai kids spoke thai to each other. all the indian kids (including me) spoke hindi to each other. japanese kids would speak japanese. korean kids would speak korean. chinese kids would speak chinese (i think everyone except for like 2 ppl in my year were mandarin speakers). german kids would speak german, etc. as soon as you found another person from your culture or who spoke the same language as you, you'd switch languages. it wasn't even a comfort thing since most people were actually more fluent in english than in their heritage language (all our classes were in english except the language classes, so it was a common experience). it was just habit. i also think its INSANE that kitty's dad allowed her to move all the way across the world to a literal foreign country when she couldn't even speak the language. that's insane to me. i would definitely not let my hypothetical highschooler do that. like girl you're moving all the way across the world to a country where you can't even order food?? hell no. you're staying right here. we even see that she really wants to learn more about her mom and feel closer to her. learning her mother's heritage language would be a great way to do that! at the very least she should've been able to speak korean but very badly and had a "learning korean" arc during the show. like i could buy it if she sounded really bad and choppy when talking because she'd been learning on her own using bad resources with a bad method (i mean, she's a kid) for a while and she was struggling with it. and then she gets to korea and realizes she had vastly underestimated how much korean she had to learn. plus, her boyfriend is literally korean too. she's half korean and dating a korean person and going to spend a year abroad in korea. how many more reasons does she need to learn korean??? come on
I honestly couldn't make it past the first episode because it all reminded me of wattpad fanfiction and that is pure trauma. And I'm sure we all had somewhat of the same reaction when the koreaboo appeared. I turned off my tv, laughed, and walked around.

She probably got in because she is academically good and knows her stuff, but failed during the academic year because she couldn't cope with the education system, which is vastly different and makes quite a difference. if you're used to the american education system then, oh boy, are you going to struggle HARD in a strict system that korea and asia follow. i have personally had many of my friends go to USA/Canada and tell me its so much easie there and less peer pressure than back here.

My issues with the show?
1. 6,000 freaking storylines that are so awkwardly distributed with screen time. You have Kitty trying to find a secret half sibling, her issues with Dae, Yuri coming out, Q finding out about Florián’s secrets, Min Ho and Madison, Min Ho and his mom, Yuri and her mom, literally anything with Alex and Professor Lee, Yuri and Juliana, Yuri and Kitty, Dae and Min Ho’s friendship, the Han Hotel scandal, the list goes on. The show is terrible at telling you what you should be focusing on at the moment because they try to weave in every storyline with each other at the same time.
2. The characters. Kitty was one of the best characters in To All The Boys but in this show? She is basically just Lara Jean 2.0. She was the voice of reason to get Lara Jean’s head out of her butt with her melodramatic and over-the-top issues. Here she is so obsessed with everyone else’s business, practically destroyed a family because she knew too much, and was so self centered. It really made it hard to root for her. Dae was alright, he was a nice guy and was a good person, but he was boring and I really didn’t care about the fake relationship between him and Yuri nor did I care about him and Kitty reconciling. Q was the typical gay best friend, but at least he had some personality with him, and he was funny. Yuri was awful, like Kitty, she can’t help but stick her nose in everyone’s business and actively makes things hard on everyone around her and causes drama. Min Ho was the only character I liked, he was over the top but was a fun presence in the show. He was funny and had a lot of heart, and a true bro to Q and Dae, which I was far more interested in than anything with Kitty. I just know that Kitty isn’t going to choose Min Ho, I just hope they don’t do him dirty. Other characters were meh, Jina was fine, Alex was fine, Professor Lee was actually kinda interesting, I had teachers like him. Juliana was boring, same with Florián, Madison, who got a lot of screen time for some reason. Kitty’s mom is the most underdeveloped character. She’s dead, but the whole goddamn trip was to learn more about her, I still know nothing about Eve Song.
3. The tone and plot. The tone of this show is all over the place. It wants to be melodramatic while being super comedic with a soap opera overdose and extremely heartfelt. You can have these things in a show, but you have to balance out when and your timing. It makes the show feel like it takes itself too seriously or doesn’t take the moments that should be taken seriously serious at all. It’s just so messy and the 6,000 storylines just make it that much messier.
Things I liked?
1. I appreciate that the Korean characters actually speak primarily in Korean with one another. It really bothers me in shows how the characters of the country hardly speak the language with their peers, but Yuri, Min Ho, and Dae will mostly speak Korean with one another, and with there parents and family, it is far more realistic in that aspect and I appreciate it a lot. But I do think the show is bad at showing the language barrier Kitty should be facing.
2. The soundtrack. I really liked the music in the background of scenes and it was fitting for the moment. Very catchy and added a more fun aspect or goofiness the show lacked in tone and dialogue.
3. The cinematography. The shots in the show were actually pretty neat, albeit very Wattpad and American Girl Goes Traveling. KISS had a beautiful campus and the places they showed in Seoul were pretty, but it’s looks without substance.

Well it is my opinion, but I REALLY hated the soundtrack, they played the most random K-Pop songs at the weirdest moments. I saw a comment above saying they just searched up 'top K-Pop songs' and just added it 😭. And secondly, the koreans speaking their native language was very less, and one example is Yuri and her mother speaking in english. 99% of the korean characters had their dialogues in korean, even with each other

I couldn't bring myself to finish the show, because it just reminded me of people from my high school Korean class. I'm not Korean, but I learnt Korean through high school, because I had a best friend who was Korean, so we decided to learn each other's languages (Czech and Korean). I have never really been into K-pop or K-dramas but MY GOODNESS my entire Korean class was full of Koreaboos. Every conversation was about K-pop and how they would move to Korea and marry a K-pop star. Although, I have to give them at least some credit for trying to learn Korean (however, they all dropped out after 1st year beginner's classes, because the language wasn't as easy as they thought).

My best friend in 9th grade was raised in the Czech Republic (she actually knew 5 languages) so we always exchanged words because I know Polish. It was really fun.
That’s kinda crazy! When I was in school, it wasn’t until high school that people started liking kpop or Korean dramas a bit more (like 2017), before that- I was told how it was trashy or that it was all the same. But I just find it so interesting how it’s become more accepted in the west- I remember making a PowerPoint introducing kpop in middle school and people made fun of it. 😂
I respect every culture, so I didn’t become a saesang or anything extreme, but I will say I did love kdramas, and not just Korean dramas, but also Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese. Kinda glad that streaming services have some of them though- before I was relying on illegal sites or RUclips to find dramas!
I’m Czech and my uni classmate (friend) is Korean. He’s learning Czech and I’ve been watching a lot of kdramas (which I watched even before I met him), asking him to tell me about Korean culture and mostly him cooking me authentic Korean food ☺️ I’ve never been a fan of kpop but I’m really curious about his culture and he’s adamant on learning Czech to fit in here ❤ he’s honestly been one of my best friends in uni. One doesn’t have to be a Koreaboo to appreciate the culture but also see the realistic/not so good parts of Korean culture.
I really wish they did more with the setting. Like your in SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA! The only part where she used her surrounding to her advantage was when they went on that hike and she saw that hospital from far away, and then we saw her come out of a subway exit to get to that hospital. This whole sequence didn't just service the plot of Kitty and Dae but also the subplot of discovering more about her mom. They should have done more scenes like that where they use Seoul, the surroundings, landmarks, etc. I feel like most of the show was shot indoors, either in that school, at the dorm, in the library, in someones house. They really didn't have to travel all the way to korea for that. I hope next season they utilize Seoul more bc it is a nice city to explore.
I agree about the shots. The exterior shots feel like they were taken at places that could stand in for Korea / Seoul eg Dae's house, the garden. The fact that Kitty never spoke Korean except for annyeong also supports your view
I fully agree on the plot changes, like she switches the love interest 3 times within a span of 10 episodes and it keeps switching back and forth leaving us with nothing.

I think the storytelling was just too convenient and predictable. It was just riddled with common wattpad tropes thus making it an absolute cringefest. I'd say this show was way cringier than your average Kdrama also because it's a young adult show with all the typical YA cheesy plot lines.

XO kitty is like a mix of a Disney channel movie and a wattpad story and a k-drama
The school not doing anything about her disgusting roommate really took me out. Gamer girl was creating a public health crisis for the school. Also, this version of kitty saying she just expects her boyfriend (who is own scholarship) to be her full time translator really made me hate her. Kitty was acting like an entitled American and not in a critiquing way, it was just one of her quarks.
The things that made the least sense imo were:
• Dae not explaining anything to Kitty: yes I know there was a NDA involved, but there could have been many ways to tell Kitty about the fake relationship without outing Yuri.
• Yuri wanting to break Kitty and Dae: why did she constantly try to ruin their relationship if she didn’t like either of them? not that that would make it any better, but just taking the necklace and basically forbidding Dae of talking things out with Kitty makes absolutely no sense if she was in a pretend relationship. That just makes her an awful person fr.
• Minho falling for Kitty: although arguably one of the best characters, it feels so wattpad-y for him to fall for Kitty. She was HIS BESTFRIEND’S EX 😭
And obviously the whole Yuri crush situation out of nowhere- I absolutely agree with everything you said. This show had terrible writing and made no sense even considering the whole “teens might not take the best decisions” factor 💀

I was looking forward to seeing it, and it has gone beyond disappointment for the representation part. That’s what happens when Netflix puts so many kdramas on its platform. People get even more obsessed with Korea. (I also watch kdramas but XO, Kitty was crazy cringe. I’ll still watch season 2 but I’ll have to suffer through it like I did with s1, just because I’m curious how much more of a shitshow the writers will make of it 😂)

9:20: Fr, I am abroad in Korea rn for a semester in college and we literally have separate boys and girls dorms, you have to follow a set amount of rules, we have a curfew, and every month you have to pass a room inspection (basically keep shit clean and no contraband; but it is much more intense then American inspections if that makes sense)
Still remember when I commented that she was very Immature for even a high school student people were all like that’s what teenagers do they discover, like I know teenagers are very rebelling but her character was the same as in all the boys I loved like there was no development and the amount of plot twists and love interests was so weird and not needed

Thank you for making this video! I remember when it first came out, I considered watching it but the preview clip that Netflix chose LITERALLY felt like a Wattpad story. I watched XO, Kittty and then watched someone review it and I was really shocked by how MANY people loved it. The audio also seemed off to me like it was obviously voiced over at parts (or something im not sure 😭) and didnt blend in at all lol and it bothered me a little
i honestly was shocked how many people dont like it. and how many people found it cringe. i didnt cringe at all when i watched it, yeah maybe by 2-3 scenes but thats the case with every show i watch. and also how many people are anti about the yuri kitty thing. i liked, i liked all characters. it was just a fun cute show, thats it
@@manale9366it was totally target to Koreaboos, the acting was really bad, the character development was disgraceful, kitty having a crush on Yuri was forced asf, and Kitty was acting exactly the OPPOSITE of the way she acts in the movies and in the books, which makes me genuinely sad, cuz “All the boys I loved before” kitty was my favorite character, also the Korean representation is so bad, the only realistic thing is Dae’s struggles, Kitty being the dumbest in the school even tho she’s the smartest in America, and all the conflict Yuri has w her mom, the rest was everything poor written but yeah everyone has different opinions:))

Idk but I saw a scene where the kitty girl was just walking outside normally and the background music was something like pink venom (Blackpink, the ratatata part) not really sure if it was that song tho.. also idk if u listen to kpop so u might not know what I’m talking about😭

i don't think the only realistic thing in the show was kitty's academic struggles, there was yuri's struggles with her sexual orientation and family issues, kitty missing her mom, dae losing his mom & also having money problems in his household etc. but i agree with everything else you said tbh

I feel like her falling for yuri was just so random and doesn’t really make sense?? Like she dated dae for FOUR years and as soon as all the drama clears up with dae ( which was honestly just a huge red flag especially how he didn’t tell her AT ALL) she finally got to be with him and was finally doing the whole thing she came to Korea to do and the whole plot just kinda changed 😭 also I hated how she was chasing her and was even going to confess even tho yuri obviously was in a committed relationship🤷♀️ there’s nothing wrong with her realizing she likes boys and girls but I feel like it was random especially since she had never showed any interest in girl before yuri and she didn’t have feeling for her until the sex dreams
frr and I don't have THAT much of a problem with the relationship it just could've been written so so much better
as messily written as the show may be, i think the sudden-ness of kittys crush on yuri was actually kind of realistic (in a personal sense). finding out that you, as a girl, like other girls isnt necessarily the easiest thing. for me, personally, i realised at around 13, and it wasnt a simple "ah i like girls" kind of thing. its this sort of sudden moment where this one girl, in a different setting, time, and place, looks a little different than usual and from all the others. that, even though youve known this girl for a while, this new way of looking at her has your throat constricted and your mind racing with millions of questions. thats how it happened to me. i hadnt shown interest in girls up until that one moment, so when kitty looked at yuri dj-ing and suddenly had a different look at her, i personally felt that. i know it can come across as confusing and sudden, but i feel like it resonated with many other sapphics along with myself, even though quick and sharp in its development

She quite literally made Dae fake date her when she knew he was in a relationship with her, stole her necklace that was important to her, etc. I mean yeah they make up but only for a split second before she’s all of a sudden head over hills. They hardly ever talked either. What happened to crushing on Dae for 4 years 😭 how can you move on that fast and with his fake girlfriend at that

honestly...I just want dae to be happy! Like poor guy just was trying to do the best he could with the cards he was given...then yuri makes him her fake boyfriend...then his real girlfriend shows up and when he was going to tell her everything, he realizes that she wouldn't be able to keep it a secret (the whole minho's baby commercial thing)...and then finally when he is set free...his girlfriend goes..."nah I like Yuri now'.....come on give this man some slack.....

I definitely see where you’re coming from on the whole pretty much like Emily in Paris front because they have similar storylines fr but at least Emily went to a French class they didn’t even try to let kitty learn Korean 😭 (even tho Emily didn’t learn a damn thing…) hopefully they can get it together in season two because I was so excited when I heard this was coming out and the disappointment I felt was unmatched 😭😭😭
Out of all my issues with the show two completely had me struggling. 1. Kitty's crush on Yuri was out of nowhere. It wasn't *impossible* I guess but at to that point Yuri was very passive aggressive to Kitty ever since the welcome party where SHE TOLD KITTY DAE WAS HER BOYFRIEND. I'm sorry, I just CAN NOT imagine falling for someone that i thought my boyfriend cheated on me with whether i was questioning my sexuality or not! 2. Kitty was not at KISS to be closer to her mom. Yes they tried to circle back to that every time she was about to leave, but they could never really convince me that her need to be closer to her mom outweighed the need to be with Dae. There even some points when i completely forgot that was the reason she was there in the first place ://

as someone who stayed for minho, i have a few things to add~ mostly i agree with you! i'm not even Korean but i watch so many Korean shows, dramas, kpop content, take Korean classes, etc., so i have *some* ideas about what Korea's like as a country/society and this show had me ":O" 85% of the time. in a bad way. in a "this sh*t will never fly in Korea" way. like a parent just telling their teenage kid they want to meet their boyfriend? i half expected Yuri's mom to just yell at her for trying to date at all and work harder on getting into SNU or whatever, that whole "you'll date when you're 25" attitude. which, OK, also may be extreme, but it would have surprised me a lot less. and the dorm thing... GAH. no serious institution, Korean or otherwise, would have just assigned a girl to a dorm without triple, quadruple checking that everything's OK. (the dorm itself also seemed pretty unrealistic, but i give them creative license, this being an international private school and all, maybe they do have the funding for giant spacious apartments for all of their students, as unlikely as it seems to the rest of us.) low-key hated Kitty, she was all over the place, i get that she's 15 and her emotions are a rollercoaster but girl, that was a LOT. and i also hated how heavy they went on the kpop in the soundtrack, it was like a beginners' 2022 kpop playlist and Korea has sooooo much more music than that, not to mention that it wouldn't have killed them to play a western song here and there, the entire world listens to that, including Korea. and the clothes? Kitty, you're going to an official school event, why are you dressed like ITZY at M-countdown? you're a child. but ANYWAY, what i wanted to add about Minho is that i really liked the arc with his mom? it's still very underdeveloped but i like that they showed he acts so cocky and overly confident because he's a lonely child of neglect who doesn't know how to properly express he wants more intimacy from the people he likes because his own family has deprived him of that warmth. the whole secret babies and what not bit was too melodramatic for me but i like Alex as a character and i hope we get to see more of him in S2... aside from him struggling to build a relationship with his birth parents, i also wanna know more about his experience as an overseas Korean trying to fit in, and also as a young teacher trying to find his place in a rigid (supposedly?) institution where his colleagues are old enough to be/are literally his parents.

I feel like actor for dae was the best out of the whole cast. i think it’s cause he has acting experience and he has worked in different shows I remember seeing him in 2521 and he had a minor role but was so good in it realistically he’s the best

as someone who is learning korean i was highkey hoping that like 90% of this show would be in korean (and i would get a chance to practice lol). it's wild that they decided to make everyone speak in english when this basically should've been a show that is entirely in korean. but everyone speaks in english like most of the time?? even yuri and her mom (two korean people) spend most of their time speaking to each other in english?? yuri and dae only switch to korean like a handful of times?
i moved schools when i was really little from a school that spoke mostly english to a school that spoke mostly hindi (moved cities, though i think it was actually a class thing - more rich ppl kids went to the first school) and i had a HUGE adjustment. most kids in my new school spoke english fairly well but they just didn't like to talk to me because they didn't want to speak english. my hindi was terrible at the time (i'm a native speaker, i just favour english) and i had to go through an adjustment period where i couldn't really make any friends because i had to improve my hindi. kitty should've had to go through something similar.
i can buy that everyone at this school KNOWS english if its some fancy elite international school but basically all of kitty's friends are korean people and they are constantly speaking english. i went to an international school in thailand and everyone knew english but we'd only use english with each other if we didn't have another language in common. all the thai kids spoke thai to each other. all the indian kids (including me) spoke hindi to each other. japanese kids would speak japanese. korean kids would speak korean. chinese kids would speak chinese (i think everyone except for like 2 ppl in my year were mandarin speakers). german kids would speak german, etc. as soon as you found another person from your culture or who spoke the same language as you, you'd switch languages. it wasn't even a comfort thing since most people were actually more fluent in english than in their heritage language (all our classes were in english except the language classes, so it was a common experience). it was just habit.
i also think its INSANE that kitty's dad allowed her to move all the way across the world to a literal foreign country when she couldn't even speak the language. that's insane to me. i would definitely not let my hypothetical highschooler do that. like girl you're moving all the way across the world to a country where you can't even order food?? hell no. you're staying right here. we even see that she really wants to learn more about her mom and feel closer to her. learning her mother's heritage language would be a great way to do that! at the very least she should've been able to speak korean but very badly and had a "learning korean" arc during the show. like i could buy it if she sounded really bad and choppy when talking because she'd been learning on her own using bad resources with a bad method (i mean, she's a kid) for a while and she was struggling with it. and then she gets to korea and realizes she had vastly underestimated how much korean she had to learn. plus, her boyfriend is literally korean too. she's half korean and dating a korean person and going to spend a year abroad in korea. how many more reasons does she need to learn korean??? come on

I honestly couldn't make it past the first episode because it all reminded me of wattpad fanfiction and that is pure trauma. And I'm sure we all had somewhat of the same reaction when the koreaboo appeared. I turned off my tv, laughed, and walked around.
