In reality, the real life Dan Devine was actually the one who insisted on playing Rudy in his final game. Devine even gave the filmmakers permission to turn him into the film's villain in order to help Rudy, who he considered a good friend. So an actual nice person gets forever being remembered as the crotchety coach.
By the way, ever wonder who saw Rudy play that day and got so inspired he just had to make it into a movie? Nobody. It was Rudy himself who spent a full decade trying to convince studios that his life was so awesome it deserved a movie, before one of them finally relented.

It's the early to mid 1970s. Dan Divine was Green Bay's coach after Lombardi. They had one year of Phil Bengston and then Dan Divine. So Divine was Hated in Geren Bay because he was not Vince Lombardi. Then he went to Notre Dame when they lost their popular and successful head coach Arol Parsigian. He did pretty well at Notre Dame. This movie shows Divine not wanting to let Rudy Play. The exact opposite is true. Divine asked Rudy if he would like to go in and Rudy told the coach he was a defensive player. So the coach made effort to get the offense to score so Rudy could play. Also. Daniel Rutiger was the oldest in his family. There was no frank and there was no Johnny. That was Hollywood. If you look at the guy in the dark blue jacket with the sheep skin collar standing behind Rudy's dad at the game, ... That was the Real Rudy. The player who took his helmet off and threw it at Rudy saying "Last Practice of the year and this Ass Hole thinks it's the super bowl !" The actual palyer that did that was Vince Vaughn. That last game against Georgia Tech, That was a nationally televised game. I saw it in Black & White on my T.V. in Wisconsin. The Tackle he made actually happened except there were two Notre Dame players in on that. Rudy and one other. There are two other football walk on stories that you should watch. Rudy was a Walk on player. "Invincible" is the Vince Papoli story. a 30 year old from South Philadelphia Walked on to the Eagles and played three seasons in the NFL. And the movie "Greater" The Bryan Burlswoth story. The fat kid that finally got good coaching at the college level. Drafted in the first round by the Colts. Those two are a must see for you. You are fun to watch football movies with.

Loved football movie, "American Underdog, a superb story with the same undertones of the human experience as "Rudy."
On the other side of the continuum, if you want to laugh at the ridiculous while taking away a heartfelt message, I always have to give it to "Slapshot." Paul Newman played his role perfectly.
.....And don't even make me start crying from pride and patriotism that happens every time I watch "Miracle on Ice." Watch this one, too.

The world views those like his father as villains, when in truth, he only tried to prevent Rudy from torturing himself... and others... in his pursuit of a dream. Just because we want some things really bad doesn't mean it makes sense. EVERYONE's life would have been easier if Rudy makes other choices. Why do we constantly celebrate selfishness.

your not wrong. It definitely doesn't always end the way this movie did. But what his tenacity did do is get him an education and encouraged his younger brothers to do the same, which in turn made their lives better. Who knows what path it will take? It is definitely a difficult choice (and I am not absolutely sure the right one)
