Steve Vai Answers live in Tokyo Filmed 100% on GoPro July 8th 2014

  • We made HISTORY on this video. As far as GoPro & myself (Jason the filmmaker) are aware this was the first time ever that a camera was hung from the undercarriage angle of a guitar live at a show. 7 GoPros were used in total to shoot this epic moment.
Filmed & edited by Jason McNamara in Tokyo: www.jasonmcnamara.net
This was filmed entirely with 7x GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition cameras. It is simply a one off video made with Steve's permission here for you all to enjoy Steve Vai as you've never seen him before.
The audio was a mixture of from the desk (it was the LIVE mix, sadly no multi-track with a chance for a post mix) and I also blended the GoPro mic on Dave's side in the left channel as well as the GoPro mic Phillip's side in the right channel because the desk has no ambient mics.

Love how Steve can take a old song of his and make part's of it brand new and so dynamic it stands the test of time and the band is so polished you'd think it was all done in the studio and had many takes.

I'm not saying it's the 1st time it's been done live, but it's the 1st time I've seen Jeremy (or any other person drumming for Vai) do the part from 3:00 - 3:09 just like it was done in the studio by Chris Frazier. It takes a lot of practice to get those double kicks to be syncopated then syncompated within another syncopation. In fact, this is probably the best live performance of this song ever, with the possible exception of full orchestra. Thanks Mr. Vai, your biggest fan Paul Fenz

    • @JasonMcNamara
      @JasonMcNamara  10 лет назад +1

As the person who made this video, (that would be ME) thank you very much Paul Fenz. I really appreciate your comment. It's also great to know that someone out there would have appreciated the fact that from 3:04 to 3:08 you could see exactly what Jeremy was doing as well.
Hopefully Steve will see your comment as well. I have no idea if he will, but maybe.

Very, very cool video. Unlike a lot of edits, this one gives some great close ups of the hard stuff Steve does, the little things you don't see on wide shots. The stability of the 'on board' shot is great for analysing Steve's techniques. It's also a sobering reminder that he is also human, and is just epically good at what he does.
Nice touch showing Thomas Nordegg taking the guitar off stage at the end too. Great vid!

Wow, i´ve seen this video a lot of times since you uploaded it and every time i see it i find something new and useful to play this song on my guitar. This video help me a lot to play the song just like Vai does, stomping the correct pedals and choosing the pickup positions. Thank you very much Jason for make this! Really thank you!

SrCampesino ... Thank you VERY much. Your response is EXACTLY what I was going for with this (and pretty much all of my other) video(s).As far as I can recall, that Yellow thing was his Power Supply. I could be mistaken, but I think it is. If you add me on FaceBook and message me I can send you back a photo of his pedalboard. I'm pretty sure I took a photo on the day of Steve's, Dave's & Phil's as well. And if you'd like to see some more of my work, I made 3 videos which will be on the new DVD of The Aristocrats with Guthrie Govan on Guitar. That should be out in January 2015.Cheers,Jason

***** Thank you very much. I've also recently done 3 videos for The Aristocrats new DVD with up to 20 cameras for that one. They are very exciting videos. I hope you get to see them when the DVD comes out sometime later this year or early next year.

You're not the first person to ask me about this Danar. Unfortunately I don't have permission for doing that. Now if someone was hanging out with me and asked to see it I'd have no problem with that. If you ever come to Tokyo let me know.
      Cheers, Jason

Steve Vai needs hoverboards for his band members and they can circulate the audience.

I love how you can hear the rhythm guitar part so clearly in Vai's band unlike Joe satriani's band. I love joe satriani tho don't get me wrong.

Thanks. I enjoy watching it too and it was my idea. Haha!! I think that's the key with making music, filming videos or anything you do. If you make what you enjoy, want to hear or want to see.... hopefully others will enjoy it too.
      Thanks again,
      Jason
