  • The day of Napoleon's coronation, (2 December, 1804)
Napoleon then took Josephine's crown, made as if to place it upon his own head and then crowned the empress kneeling before him.
The imperial couple thus crowned sat down to wait for the formation of the procession which was to accompany them from the low thrones to the grand throne. The procession comprised: the pope, princes, Grands dignitaires, Grands officiers, princesses, ladies in waiting, pages, heralds and bailiffs bearing the honours of Napoleon and Charlemagne
Napoleon sat down upon the great throne. The pope blessed him and pronounced the words from the Rheims rite: "Que Dieu vous affermisse sur ce trône..." ('May God strengthen you upon this throne...) and kissed the emperor upon the cheek.
The pope then turned towards the congregation and said in a loud voice Vivat Imperator in aeternum ; the choirs then sang the Vivat by the Abbé Roze.

What a fabulous piece of music Abbé Roze wrote for Napoleon's coronation. After he lowered the emperor's crown on his head Napoleon said, "I am the instrument of providence. “I know men; and I tell you that Jesus Christ is not a
man. Superficial minds see a resemblance between
Christ and the founders of empires, and the gods of
other religions. That resemblance does not exist. There
is between Christianity and whatever other religions
    the distance of infinity...”
“The Bible is no mere book, but a Living Creature,
with a power that conquers all that oppose it.”
“Time, the great destroyer, is powerless to extinguish
this sacred flame; time can neither exhaust its strength
nor put a limit to its range. This is it, which strikes me
most; I have often thought of it. This it is which proves
to me quite convincingly the Divinity of Jesus Christ.”

"As for myself, I do not believe that such a person as Jesus Christ ever existed; but as the people are inclined to superstition, it is proper not to oppose them."
"All religions have been made by men."
"If I had to choose a religion, the sun as the universal giver of life would be my god."
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."
"Religion is an excellent thing for keeping the common people quiet."
"Religious wars are basically people killing each other over who has the best imaginary friend."
"I am glad that I have no religion."
      -Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon only turned to religion on his deathbed, just a short time before he died at St. Helena. Before that time, when he wasn't delirious and weak, he was not religious at all, per his own words.

@@anthonyfrade5203There were written accounts that there were up to 5000 people that braved the cold overnight, (And in the snow that had finally stopped by 8 AM the morning of the Coronation.) just to position themselves for a better view along the streets of the procession. Napoleon and Josephine left the Tuileries Palace at 10 AM. (The Pope entered the church at 9 o'clock) As Napoleon left the Tuileries Palace, he and Josephine were accompanied by a barrage of artillery salvos along with 80,000 decked out, color wearing, troops lining the procession on each side of the street 3 ranks deep. (The equivalent to approximately 4 United States Army divisions!) It must have been an experience of a lifetime to witness. Inside the Cathedral was decorated extensively and lavishly with incredible tapestries, banners of silk and velvet, and medallions of gold and silver. In the earlier hours, the Cathedral was described as a place of 'pandemonium' with many people trying to get everything readied before the start of the ceremony. It was nearly 12 noon by the time Napoleon was ready to enter the church. (As a result of the magnitude of the people along the procession route that did not go without small incidence.) However, it was said that the Sun finally appeared just as Napoleon and Josephine was to enter the church to the incredible auditory sound and splendor of 400 hundred powerful voices of chorus singers and 2 accompanying orchestras. You can imagine the magnificent sound that came from the famous church, the Cathedral de la Notre Dame. (There was never a larger event for the church that had originally started in construction in the 1100's.) After the ceremony, there was much celebration and rejoice in the streets. (The Paris Police Force estimated that 2 million additional people were in the city to witness and take part in the celebrations. Bear in mind the population of Paris was only in the area of 850,000 at the time.) People were in restaurants, cafes, private formal balls with fireworks, and illuminations. Yes, we could say it was fitting of how Napoleon would do something. Vivat in Aeternum!

The greatest leader in French history and the noblest of Empires. Pitifully destroyed by weak monarchs trying to keep their privileges

@@aquila4228 Even you, frenchs, have another greatest leaders like Richelieu, Joanne d'Arc, Sant Louis or Charlemagne, and the last was a true, wise and good emperor. But the main thing is that Buonaparte was evil, demonic like other revolutioners. Napoleone destroyed himself with a mad proyect, with the nice help of russians, spanish guerrilla and the wise Wellington.

@@aquila4228 Call those napoleonic years 'empire' is a joke, call that years the noblest is fake. The psychopath Napoleone destroyed France and Europe, very close to Hitler and III Reich. And the british were the strongest empire after the defeat of mad Napoleone.

What a stupid comment. Macron is a wannabe of Napoleon, but he doesn't deserve to put his hands anywhere near Napoleon. Napoleon would never have liked him.
