Had a heads up on a flash flood coming down the Rainbow Wash near Old Highway 80 south of Buckeye after storm were kinda sucky. But they had been building/training over the Buckeye area, a flash flood warning went up and as I drove across Rainbow Wash, it was dry and huge, so I decided to check what the warning said and it was for that dang wash! So I messaged my friend Daniel Henz at the Flood Control District and he said sure enough, 3.5-4ft high of water was coming down.
Fun to catch this on a lousy chase day!

Great film, glad u recorded it. My brother in law was living in N Mexico yrs ago and told me of a time he and an old man were cutting firewood in a dried streambed when the old man said it was time to get and pointed to a storm miles away. While drinking beer kicking back he heard a deep rumble getting louder then the flood came. Gave him a new respect for how quickly things can change there

Yes indeed, from bone-dry to standing-wave in about 30 seconds. THAT, boys and girls, is why you do NOT camp out in a wash in the desert.

Floated Hells Canyon in July one year. About ten of us set up camp at the designated area. Huge thunderclouds about and it started raining hard. Most of the guys set up their tents on a nice wide flat beach, mine was in a higher rocky area where I set up to cook for everyone. I hung a rubber boat between 2 trees and was watching the storm, everyone else in their tents. High up on the canyon wall miles from us I could see a rush of water cascading over the cliffs. 20 minutes later their was a roaring sound and I looked up and realized the nice beach was the mouth of a great wash. I ran and roused the tenter's just in time, the wall of water with logs and brush was 20 feet high and came across with such velocity it crossed the Snake river and swept up the other side 200+ feet. Wish I had that on camera!

Those flash floods start out at a snail's pace but they get pretty intense quick. I've seen Vekol wash start like that and within 20 minutes the channel is so full it's nearly hitting the bottom of the bridge on I-8. Cool stuff!

Absolutely brilliant film work, & even better editing (with zero additional crappy music sounds - that others abuse, to spoil their videos)
The sound of the water tumbling over it's debris plug, as well as the sound of your voice trying to vie for space as it happens - as well as the choreographed time-lapse shots at the end - made this video one of (if not the best) & absolutely pleasant in ever aspect - to watch and admire and hear..

I've seen two flash floods in my years and one thing you also don't forget is the smell...its like the dry riverbed gives up the aroma of its dust. Similar to rain as it starts on dry pavement. It's enjoyable the whole experience if you aren't being swept asunder!

That storm produced a very respectable flow in a short time.
Even more impressive when the video was shot from ground level.
Not knowing the terrain, I assume these washes just flow and gradually
lose themselves in the surrounding desert.

So what I didn't appreciate about the volume of water coming was that the front stream of water was being rapidly absorbed by the sand and gravel. It was only after the river bed was saturated did the actual volume of water follow with volume and energy.

A number of years ago, we had a flash flood similar to this hit the NW side of Las Vegas and one of our city fire trucks got caught in it. But I've worked many years at not being a guy so when I hear smart, thoughtful people using the term, it irritates me. Well...I think there are a lot of things we need to change in society, but this seems like something innocent that isn't as bad as all the stuff out there that is rightly needing to be changed. I just don't think it's meant as a "male" term when it's said at all. It's a generally term when people talk to lots of other people address them. I get there are people with your viewpoint and I respect that, and I definitely have actually tried to use other words when I'm in these situations, just know in my heart, I don't mean anything at all when I say that word other than all of you AWESOME people who follow me and are watching :)

What’s a flood for us was a tsunami for all those desert critters wondering what the heck is going on lol

What is the blue line overlaying the start of the timelapse?

It really shows the brains on some drivers that they have to stand guard and close the road because if they didn't you could bet your last dollar some dim bulb would try crossing it .

I can't wait to see this footage in the next climate change apocalypse movie: Sometime After The Day After The Day After Tomorrow (because they have to keep postponing the end of days since their schedules keep getting screwed up)

It would be helpful if readers were told where Rainbow Wash, Old Highway 80, etc are located.

Thanks for yet another great video.
My question is if you were to go back to the same place in a few days time would there be a sudden burst of plants growing?

    • @MikeOlbinski
      @MikeOlbinski  4 года назад

Hmm, I suspect in a few days you might see some new growth, like weeds or grass or something, I don't see why not.

@@MikeOlbinski Maybe my imagination has been fed too much by nature documentaries where deserts suddenly spring into life and herds of animals amass to drink.
Really enjoyed the raw excitement/behind the scenes aspect of this video. Your previous ones can only be described in superlatives. Would be great if dentists and the like would invest in showing your kind of content during boring waiting-room waiting/tricky procedures. All the best to you.

    2 questions...
    1) when its over, does it just kind of trickle out or just stop?
    2) where does the water all go do? Other rivers or dry lakes or where?
    Thanks
